well now i've watched mha season 1 i don't understand where it's supposed to be cringe

it's actually quite good and i don't watch a lot of anime, love that their quirks are balanced, it's well done !

i guess it's the fandom then but tbh i kinda already know the fandom because they do very good fanarts (yeah i like fanarts of stuff i don't know/watch, that's how i was part of fandoms for years without knowing) and they seem pretty chill

Aizawa Shouta doesn't ever show romantic (or sexual) interest in anyone and is actively put off by Ms Joke hitting on him and the idea of getting married to her

All Might has NO experience with women according to Horikoshi (could also mean he has experience with men but y'know)

Ashido Mina really wants to be in a relationship but never fell in love (cupioromantic moment)

Both Bakugou Katsuki and Todoroki Shouto hide from girls crushing on them near the end, don't ever show romantic interest in anyone or get anxious or flustered near girls, Katsuki especially apparently never cared about girls (and vice versa) before and and Shouto specifically doesn't notice when he's hit on.

Iida Tenya is never interested in girls or men and is significantly more focused on both his studies and his friendships

My favorite headcanon: Uraraka Ochako's love for Izuku seems founded more on her admiration and people telling her she must like him (because boy and girl etc) than in actual romantic love, and she connects a lot with Toga (who also loves people in a non-conventional way)

Midnight doesn't have a romantic partner or anyone she regularly flirts with despite being a very beautiful and desired woman, and doesn't seem to have had any kind of romantic relationship with the three boys more or less her age she hung out with a lot (the rooftop trio) (she can also be seen as a cliché of aroallo person who only cares about sex so I'm claiming her).

Pixie Bob's obsession with finding a partner is giving "I've been told all my life that I HAVE to get married and I don't want to so I keep looking for the perfect match and not finding it because the man I'm looking for doesn't exist because I won't ever fall in love". Because by god you can't tell me the cute blonde catgirl isn't finding a boyfriend.

All For One only cares about his brother, I'd even argue he's aromantic asexual aplatonic etc. a-everything except familial and idk. quirkic. attracted to quirks.

Mount Lady is aro for the same reason as Midnight but because I think it's implied or canon that she's dating Kamui Woods, she's lower.

Midoriya Izuku is green so he's obviously aromantic and most of his flustered reactions to girls seem based more on shyness (and an obvious reaction to getting boobs shoved in his face) and sexual or aesthetic attraction than romantic attraction (he also has a very romcom view of what being boyfriend girlfriend is, ie. his reaction to Toga's confession)

Aoyama Yuuga's definition of love (according to his comment on Ochako being in love with Izuku because she was thinking "what would Deku-kun do?") is very weird and seems based more in things he was told or saw in fiction than feelings he would have felt himself.

Yoarashi Inasa is just so fucking weird with friendships and social cues he looks like he's trying to navigate the world while making absolutely sure NO ONE misinterprets him, which makes him both very aro and very autistic in my book

Kurogiri is literally a bunch of mist with little free will whose purpose in life is protecting this one boy, he's all the As.

Endeavor married for insane reasons and never even cheated on Rei after he sent her to the hospital (which a lot of men his caliber would do)

Ms Joke makes the idea of dating Shouta a joke and I think that's great. She's also green.

Miruko's chill and doesn't give a fuck, she's a fighting person, very Katsuki-coded in that regard I fear. She also works alone without an agency, which is giving aromantic for no reason other than I Said So.

Toga Himiko is a queer allegory that is generally interpreted as bisexual and biromantic but I think she can be interpreted as aroallo as well (way to love that’s seen as impure and unholy etc etc, notions of consent – taking people’s blood and hurting them without their consent which is for her a way to show her love, most of her attraction seeming physical or aesthetic rather than romantic, her parents telling her to repress repress repress instead of satisfying her desires in a safe way, the scene where she’s biting her wrist in her sleep???? etc etc) 

Twice never had a lot of friends and never had a lot of female friends and when he feels gratefulness and care for Toga it outwardly seems romantic because he doesn’t know what’s romantic and what’s not and hasn’t had a lot of female friends 

Dabi is giving aromantic aplatonic who only really loves his family but due to circumstances can’t love them healthily and ends up just hating them (the most intense feelings of love he shows are always towards Enji or Natsuo, and his apology to Shouto makes me think Shouto is also included in this – no evidence for Fuyumi and Rei but I can do what I want. He clearly cares for Twice and Toga too but it presents very differently, even after he’s revealed himself and doesn’t need to be as secretive). 

Shigaraki Tomura probably just doesn’t give a shit I’d say. He’s pretty apathetic when he isn’t fighting or angry or like doing his hatred thing, but he clearly cares about his teammates. 

Fatgum is foodpilled and studentpilled. He really loves food and he really loves his students he doesn't need no romantic relationship.

Jirou Kyoka takes a bit to warm up to Denki so I think she's demiromantic actually

Bruce (the third user of One For All). He just has such third wheel vibes.

Intelli Saiko because why would she bother with romance, it's so unpractical and illogical

The fact that Hawks plays up the flirting with his fans is giving aromantic to me – obviously heartbreaker aroallo stereotype but I think he could also be ace, the aroallo part isn’t that important, it’s just that he’s always pretending. It’s giving still in the closet. Also I know he’s young and busy and Horikoshi doesn’t really put that much casual romance in MHA but it’s so funny that there isn’t even a sliver of a girlfriend implied in his timeskip. Star and Stripe is also absolutely married to her job. Also, lots of guys around her, lots of important and admired male figures in her life, and yet not a single crush from her. Points. Aromantic lesbian 

Nezu is a fuckass mouse I highly doubt he's attracted to humans in any way

Gran Torino is a single old man which is enough for me (though because I hate that fucker I think it'd be funny if women just hated him)

Where Is Shimura Nana’s Husband. 

Muscular only likes to kill, he doesn’t need romance nor sex, his only desire is Killing People and fighting. Same thing for Moonfish, he only wants to eat people (mood my guy)

Since the sports festival Uraraka and tokoyami have been fairly close. Uraraka has a surprising “dark side” when it comes to her determination. I think they are a great trio with toko and DS being in all black and ochako in all pink haha.

You don’t want to see what happens when tokoyami and ochako butt heads. They are both highly competitive and anything from a card game to training can get extremely heated. They also train well together because tokoyami likes to use knives and swords and Uraraka can focus on disarming him. Due to that competitiveness they end up on the floor in a cat fight by the end though. Uraraka is more chatty and will talk about anything and tokoyami is good at listening like always. She does think his way of talking is creepy yet cool?? She thinks he’s a totally lame Chuunibyou but that’s exactly what makes him so endearing. She’s friends with deku and iida so obviously she has a habit of befriending the loser nerds. I’ve seen some people think she likes screamer/rock/metal music and I like that especially for her training music so they jam out together. Weirdly enough I also think Tokoyami’s family has had financial issues in the past so they can relate over frugal spending. (His problems arnt nearly as bad as ochako living in poverty her whole life don’t worry).

Dark shadow is always on their best behavior for the girls so of course Shadow and Ura are going to get along. They love getting attention and pets from her because she’s so nice! Unless they have done something naughty like stolen her food…then it’s like a demon has been unleashed. Ochakos rage is enough to cow even Dark Shadows fearless spirit, she’ll have them apologizing within minutes after a verbal thrashing. There are no hard feeling though~ Really, their biggest bonding point is a love of space!!!(This is my favorite hc for them!) They watch documentaries, find recent astronomical events online, and look at the stars at night. Dark Shadow has a small portable telescope that they show her how to use (she’s too poor to have ever gotten one) and they love going to observatories and just talking about space stuff they learned. I think they could fly together at night to go up and see the stars, dark shadow would nag her to bring a jacket. Uraraka likes talking with shadow even if she is confused about their independence, she just kinda gets used to it and forgets they aren’t a person. She is very caring and sweet to them. They are just so cute!!

Iidachako friendship

Iidachako is a friendship that I like a lot. I understand why the New B3 overtook precedence over the original trio story-wise, but I would have loved to see more the original trio - and also more Iidachako.

Partly because more media portrayals of positive, platonic, and close friendships between guys and girls are always welcome, and mainly because I really liked their dynamic specifically.

In my opinion, Horikoshi could have easily included Uraraka in the Hosu incident.

Uraraka could've been there for Iida, just like how Deku had been. I don't think that her being there would have taken anything away from Todoroki bonding with the other two boys. In fact, he could have bonded with her too.

It would have been also interesting to see Uraraka dealing with the inner turmoil of facing a zealot who is so against heroes receiving renumeration for their work.

Oh absolutely platonic soulmates are allowed I love me some nice found family vibes.

So for this one I would see it as a soulmark au that are possibly coded by area on the body. For a familial bond it would be on the left wrist and a romantic it would be on the right and you get images that represent your soulmate(s) in gray that turn to the color of their eyes when you lock eyes for the first time.

I always vibe with erasercloudmic so they’ve all been together since their UA years and it was really no shock to any of them that they share the same platonic bonds as well. A little bunny and kitten curled up together on their right wrists.

Their kids.

They are all on the lookout for years for their two missing little soulmates. Parental bonds aren’t incredibly common, but there has to be a reason their kids need them so much that fate chose them all for each other. Right? Like how Tensei’s parental bond with Tenya snapped into place the moment the younger Iida was born just in time for their parents to start pulling back, content that they had made their hero and spare and could look to their careers rather than the family they had made.

Then Oboro finds a dirty and scraped middle schooler crying alone on a rooftop with a burnt and stained notebook clutched to their chest as they kneel alone, forehead nearly touching the harsh concrete roof, while they sob. He drops of his cloud and kneels in front of them, so painfully aware of the image this presents, what it implies, and wet green eyes full of so much damn pain look up to see who the intruder is.

Oboro feels the familiar tingling burn on his wrist that he hasn’t felt since he was sixteen and saw Shouta across the field at the Sports Festival. And he knows.

The they ask the question that breaks his heart. The question he knows they have never heard the right answer to their entire life: “Can someone quirkless become a hero.”

He cups their wet cheeks between his palms, wiping grime and tears away from those freckles, and says the answer they should have heard every time they asked: “Yes.”

Their bunny is a shattered little thing, all self doubt and hate turned inwards. It doesn’t take much more than a token investigation into their home life to get them pulled out of the mostly empty two bedroom apartment and placed in his, Shouta, and Hizashi’s care.

Izuku is the one to find the kit, between the written and physical exams at UA. Angry violet eyes glaring at the world that has shown him no kindness. They, against all odds, were assigned to the same exam grounds and met eyes in the tense time when everyone was trickling out do the locker rooms in their athletic clothes and the smart amongst them were falling into stretches before the had to fight.

Hitoshi while equally shattered, had turned his broken pieces outwards rather than in, covering himself in broken glass and shattered dreams until it cut anyone who dared get too close. Izuku, so used to pain, didn’t even seem to notice as they locked fingers with their destined brother and ran hand in hand through the mock city that burned around them.

And, as the dust settles and Hizashi nearly falls off the walls trying to get to their kids, bleeding and broken after taking down the zero pointer to spare some of their fellow applicants but laughing through the pain because they both finally know what it’s like to not be alone, the last part of their family snaps into place.

I don't think Katsuki's feelings are one sided at all, honestly Izuku was probably just surprised and confused bc he didn't expect a reaction like this from Katsuki. And big parts of the softer side Katsuki has been building up didn't get to be shown to Izuku to digest (they were in the middle of a war).

Yeah I agree! Its just what some Redditors(?) believe, that he is in an one sided obsessive relationship, and Izuku just doesn't think of him at all -when in the past chapters, he wasn't thinking about, well, anyone really. Mostly just strategies for his battle, or to stay focus on his goal to reach Shigaraki, but not a "oh I hope this person is okay" or something similar; Banjo and Ochako are the only ones I believe?

One with the control your heart line (to remain control), and the other with the I dont understand the first thing about her/him (to remember Shigaraki and AFO are still humans, and therefore can be stopped), and while Iida talked about understanding what the new meaning of Deku means, where they both remember their start as a trio of friends. But other than that, he usually tries to be more analytical than emotional in fights in general, even when he fails to do so (idk if that sounded mean, but thats not the intention at all!)

In a few weeks we'll get to know who says that! Unless the anime decides to change it, which I doubt, we'll get the answer without any question. Also Hori could make a chapter where it comes up again, making it clearer or more confusing, before the adaptation, so who knows!

Yes lol the characters are trio’d up quite a lot actually.

Shouto, Bakugo, & Midoriya are obviously a thing. I view that as a friendship thing primarily because they all help each other grow as people along the way and it’s just obvious they’ve all gotten real comfortable around each other through the Endeavor agency arc, but also as a potential coworker/hero thing since they work really well together

I’m also a fan of Iida being thrown in there: Iida, Shouto, Midoriya—> definitely a friendship/bonded through tough experiences thing, and you get the follow up later on in different moments (the war arc Iida following, retrieving Deku moment, Shouto’s noodle confession moment—> Iida is such a good friend )

Iida, Ochacko, & Midoriya have my heart purely for the organic friendship development they have. The way they all became friends at the beginning was just so realistic and relatable lol. I love that even though they aren’t the focus throughout, their friendships still matter and they even get their own volume cover together

The other kid trio I’m very much a fan of is Shouto, Ochacko, Midoriya (Savior Squad 🤩). This isn’t based on their interactions. Actually, Ochacko and Shouto barely interact, if even at all (though I suspect that’ll change later). This one is obviously based on the villains tying them together, which is why I’m a fan. I really do hope to see the three (or 6 😭) of them all interacting together later on. I’ll keep my fingers crossed 🤞. But even if not, it’ll be a missed opportunity but not a blow to the story. But we’ll see how that goes.

The Big 3–I really don’t care about them 😓

Dabi, Toga, and Shigaraki: I scream into the void about them enough. But also their “trio” dynamic is not based on their interactions at all either. Their individual circumstances and their individual stories all play off of each other without needing them to interact. And also they’re all similar to each other in ways they don’t/can’t say out loud, and for that I love the three of them. I personally don’t need them to interact directly with each other, like I’d hoped (still hope) to see with Shouto, Ocha, and Deku. I’d rather see them interact with the kids 🙏

I mean JJK have the child soldier stuff too, but it's criticized from the start, we know the Higher Up are shitty and even if they're all killed they will just be replaced so for Gojo it should go through education and not bloodshed (which is a mentality I agree with when I see how children just repeat what their parents taught them no matter how shitty)

All of this is a little sad tbh. From afar, the cast of BNHA and the story really seemed interesting to me but I never got attached to really any characters outside of Iida but I did like Ochako and Deku too and the trio we had at the beginning

I 100% agree with you! I can see them working really well together. Both on the battlefield, and behind the scenes as a couple, of sorts.

Izuku is, of course, the most calculated thinker of the trio. Time and time again he's outsmarted opponents and villains much bigger, much stronger, and much faster than him, and I have no doubt that he would whip up the same smarts around you. While he does get a bit more distracted because, well, it's you we're talking about (your beauty is very distracting to the poor broccoli LMAO), he isn't stupid. Every flirt you throw in his direction in an attempt to catch him off guard, every discovered escape attempt, every lie you've ever told him to find the chip in his armor that will help you escape from his grasp; he sees through it all. And he's planned for it all, too.

I love to imagine him as a super manipulative/cunning Yandere. While he does not behave like this Canon-wise, he's proven to be a very quick learner, so I think he'd adapt to the lifestyle pretty smoothly. I am not saying he will, or wants to, hurt you with his new talent! More like he'll feign innocence and trick other people around him into getting his way. He knows he doesn't look super threatening with his round face and freckled cheeks, but looks can be deceiving. He uses what he once viewed as his flaws to his advantage. He cons, lies, and tricks his way to your side, and gets so comfy sitting on his throne that he isn't too keen on leaving.

When he's with the other two, he is complacent, but a little peeved. He wanted to have you to himself (as all of the Yanderes do), but he figures sharing you is better than constantly fighting others for your unwilling hand.

Don't worry, he'll love you until death comes to drag him off this earth! He understands it's new and overwhelming to be surrounded with so much love all the time, but he'll be patient. If he can suffer years at Kaachan's side being degraded and beaten 'til he felt like a speck of trash on the grimy sidewalk, then the words you throw at him hardly even sting. He'll endure it because his love is Plus Ultra!

Uraraka's a fun case because she already has a crush on one of the two in the group! She adores Deku, to the point where it might evolve into another obsession of hers! To her, that makes the formation of this group even easier to adjust to.

In Uraraka’s imagination, this relationship is a fantasy land. She's the cute princess who can kick ass, but choose to wait around for her one true love. Izuku, the Brave Knight, comes along and she thinks that is where her 'Happily Ever After' ends. When all of a sudden, another beautiful royal stumbles into her fairytale. You! You're just the sweetest thing she's ever met, you make her feel like she's on Cloud 9 every time you smile at her. When your eyes meet, Uraraka feels as dizzy as she does when she uses her quirk for too long. This is it! Her true love! Well, Deku makes her feel the same way, so how can this work...? That is the moment Ochaco decides that she actually has two true loves! (Good thing Deku has fallen in love with you too.)

However, all things considered, she's greedy.

It's not like that's a bad thing! Or, at least, she hopes you don't see that as a bad thing...she just loves you so much! At times, it gets very very hard for her to share you with the other two boys. Uraraka has convinced herself that you swoon over Izuku and Iida. As if you're head-over-heels in love with them, but you don't act that way around her. All you seem to be around her is scared and nervous. Uraraka thinks about the multiple times she's turned her back to you, wondering if those are the moments you wait for to shower the boys in love, affection, words of praise, kisses, hugs—everything she wants from you but gets denied in a whine of protest.

It's a delusional thought, for sure; she doesn't even give you that much time alone to be able to try something like that with them. But, the more she indulges in the idea, the more irritated she gets. Not at you! At them.

Maybe she should try harder to get more quality time with you, skip a class or two to personally bond with you. She wants warm hugs and gentle kisses from your luxurious lips! You won't deny her for too much longer...right, cupcake~?

Iida. Tenya, Tenya, Tenya. What a methodical boy he is. I think of Pandora's box when I see him, especially when he's written as Yandere. Simple, even clean kept on the outside, but housing a house of horrors on the inside.

We truly get to see the berserk inside of him during the Stain arc. The way he behaved around the villain, the irrationality of the decision he made, I believe it was only a tiny glimpse at his true unhinged ways. And that's when he's in the Canon series! Not even a Yandere, and already so crazy! It just shows that he'd do anything for the people he loves. Even kill another human being.

I think he'd try so desperately to keep that psycho wrapped up, and he'd do a great job at it too! Collected, rational, the perfect stick-in-the-mud nerdy guy. He's cool with the arrangement of the three of them taking care of you. To be honest, there's no one he trusts more with your safety than his two closest friends. He always tells you that he's your knight in shining armor, and to come to him for anything you need assistance on. He will protect and provide.

However, his cheery attitude takes a sharp 180° turn when he finds you trying to escape one day. He'll get in your face, take you away from where you were trying to leave from, pin you to the wall, and scream in your face about how dangerous the situation was. About how badly you could have hurt yourself, how heartbroken and worried the three of them would have been, how you can never truly escape them since they'd—since he'd never give up looking for you. It'd take a while for Izuku and Uraraka to trust him being alone with you again. You were still shaken up after that night. But it wasn't because of the rough physical treatment he'd used, it wasn't the yelling, it was his eyes. They shifted so dramatically from the kind, understanding, deep sea blue to a searing steel gray in seconds. The eyes you grew to recognize, and sort of trust again, had become strangers in those slim ticks of time. His eyes reflected the mechanical drive of his bloodlust, his aggression.

He was more machine than man at that moment. A robot designed to keep you prisoner in their isolated vault.

And that thought alone was your true realization that leaving this mad trio was near, if not entirely, impossible.

Overall, I think their trio would work phenomenally well! It would be so sweet, so fluffy, as long as you behave. However, there is definitely some serious underlying jealously between the Yanderes that will have to be fixed. If it isn't...well, before long, they will tear each other apart from the inside out~!

Yes, the LOV stans I followed had a fanon ending of the LOV trio attending UA after the War. Or starting a rehabilitation program for Villians, after dismantling Tartarus.

Unfortunately I've seen the Incel Shig x Reader when I was starved of any Shiggy fics a few years ago 😔.

Its unfortunate that Shig never develops and remains stagnant. Because of that he gets overshadowed by Overhaul and Dabi, who both have a presence of a Villian compared to Shig. Intimidating, Intelligent, Cold and Calculating. I thought Shig would develop into having those traits after the fight with Re-Destro, but he just gets handed a army and more powers.

No idea of what Shig's plans were after getting the Meta Army and Machia. Was he going to have them attack major cities of something?

The Fanon of LOV wanting to change Society for the better came from Shigs speeches in the PLF War about Heros being hypocrites. Before that the LOV were just seen as a small band of quirky murderers without a goal by the large part of the fanbase.

Indeed the parallels of Izuku & Shig are there from the start. Hori even made Mirio & Overhaul. At the time they were introduced, I thought they were there to be surpassed by Izu and Shig.

Izu sort of surpasses Mirio when it comes to being a Hero, (Chosing Eri over the Mission).

Shig just takes Overhauls arms to avenge Magne. Lol. When did you start caring about your followers? Because Toga & Twice were pissed at you? We never saw LOV become close so Shig avenging Magne was really strange.

The MVA & Forest Training Arc sales were low. Which made people outside Japan think Villians weren't Popular over there.

I would like to know why Bakugo is popular in Japan. Character wise at least, not for reasons like design or shipping.

It's unfortunate it didn't go the traditional route like it was promised. Along with the promise of "How Izuku became the greatest Hero".

Yes, Cultural differences aside Izuku is sacrificed as a gag to make other characters better than they are.

Sometimes Hori is just plain malicious, Iida punching Izuku, All Might punching Izuku, Aizawa calling him Problem Child, Ochako calling him Deku, Bakugo beating him up after All Might's retirement, getting punished for defending himself, Nighteye being a bitch to him, as well as more instances of Izuku just being the worlds punching bag 😔.

It's no wonder Villain Izuku became a thing in fanfic and fanart, who wouldn't want to lash out against everyone.

Are the villains humanized? Yes and no. I feel people think Shig and LoV wanted to change the system and create paradise on Earth which is a fanon thing...Shig has no goals or plans aside destruction.

Do they have sad backstories? Yes. If we exclude Shoto and Izu, not sure the others members of A1 have a sad backstory. Ochako sure as fuck don't. (Hm, now I'm thinking about Sakura here) they suffered. But suffering alone is not enough to make a character interesting... especially if the writer is not interested in do much

Then again...MHA is set in Japan with different cultural values. Look I think Hori messed up for sure even for the target audience but MHA is made in Japan for Japanese audience first!

So my point here is...are LoV humans? Yes. Are they good people? No. The narrative focus on the "poor meow meow" but they are bad people. Hori gave sad backstory and nothing else.

So when I see LoV stans upset how Shigs and Toya aren't saved...well, they forget MHA is culturally different from western ideas and well I don't think Hori knew what to do with any character that wasn't BK.

They are humans ...but terrible people.

The civilians only knew shig as the lunatic who wanted to destroy more! "If they don't learn about his past...things won't change" maybe, maybe not. Shig killed a lot and for no reason. Maybe someone in the future could pity Shig but I think the media will show him more as a monster (not wrong as you know...Shig is a bad person and so inconsistent)

Remember how in canon there only ...more heroes than villains. And no one had time to talk with quirkless deku ofc.

goodness yes... BNHA is very much a "great set up can't stick the landing" kind of series. it establishes fun characters and an interesting world and then just... couldn't figure out how to deliver on them.

Like the "ramping up" part of BNHA, which is everything up through the Kamino arc, was really good. Then after All Might vs All for One it just felt like... the series could only bounce around aimlessly trying to figure out what it cared about. And you're totally right that narratives and characters just get dropped halfway once Horikoshi doesn't know what else to say about them.

If I had to identify one specific thing that I think really broke my interest in the series, it's that Horikoshi gets bored of his characters.

Iida Ochako and Deku were a really endearing protag trio until... Iida and Ochako just got nuked. All Might was a fantastic presence in the series until he just kinda got shoved sidewards. Now Mirio and Night Eye are main characters! Now they're not. Oh actually Deku Todoroki and Bakugou are the protag trio! Never mind no they're not. Now the whole SERIES is about the League of Villains. Now it isn't. Now Endeavor Hawks and Mirko are the main characters! Now they're not. Sudden fixation on Shigaraki! Sudden fixation on Lady Nagant! Four seconds of caring about Dabi now we don't! Best Jeanist is a protagonist now! Who's Class 1A? It's been a while since they were used for anything genuine.

(And okay okay I get it. I know what it's like to write something long-form that ends up getting you frustrated and tired of your own characters. The best way to deal with that is to step away from it for a while and Horikoshi can't do that, so his solution is just to completely rotate the character cast to new characters he does care about) but goodness does that hurt the quality of the overall narrative.

It's like I've watched everything and everyone get built halfway that I no longer believe there's a trajectory to the series I will care about. I believe at this point the conclusion to the series will involve wrapping up a plot thread that is completely new, the end result of a long chain of bouncing focuses, and ultimately captures nothing about what I originally cared about.

BnHA Chapter 320: Deku vs. Class 1-A

Previously on BnHA: Flashback!Kacchan was all “fuck Deku and fuck his stupid goodbye letters, I need to speak to somebody in charge.” Endeavor was all “hello, I am Somebody In Charge.” Kacchan was all “listen up asshole, you need to let us go out and collect our wayward nerd because you stupidly left him alone with All Might and that’s a fast track to disaster right there.” Endeavor was all, “[self-incriminating silence].” Rat Principal was all, “okay sure, have fun kids.” Back in the present, class 1-A was all “hi Deku” and Deku was all “I’M FINE!!!!!” and Kacchan was all “THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT YOU’D SAY YOU DUMB FUCKING NERD” and so the kids all got ready to fight, because OF COURSE they’re gonna fight. Sorry guys, but yeah it’s happening.

Today on BnHA: Kacchan is all “what’s up Deku you look like a possessed Rorschach test, so anyway how are the new quirks coming along.” Deku is all “they’re coming along like THIS” and uses Smokescreen to try and get away. Kacchan is all “PHASE ONE COMMENCE”, and Kouda, Sero, Jirou, and Ojiro leap into the fray to shower Deku with heaps of love and violence, because this is a shounen manga and kicking someone’s ass while simultaneously proclaiming your undying admiration for them is just how it’s done in these parts. The KoudaSeroOJirou squad then passes the baton to Satou, Momo, Tokoyami, Kaminari, and Shouji, who are all “fuck this mask” and do a bunch of stuff to tear Deku’s mask off because they’re the real heroes. Shouto is all “LOOK AT THE LITTLE CRYBABY, THAT’S RIGHT, GO AHEAD AND FUCKING CRY and by the way let us share your burden please,” and once again I swear this is all very deeply moving and touching within the actual context. The chapter ends with Tsuyu being all “look at me. I’m the cliffhanger now,” and damn.

okay real talk, I get why Tsuyu is included in the tier 3 friends, because she was one of the first people to team up with Deku going all the way back to USJ. but that said, this probably would have had more impact if their most recent interaction hadn’t been like 150 chapters ago

Kurogiri likes bees and he turns into a beekeeper. He buys a house some time away from the city, where he can be at peace.

Mr. Compress let's Toga decorate his prosthesis with stickers. They clean it after certain time so she can decorate it all over again.

Spinner teaches Tomura how to drive every Friday in an empty parking lot. The kids from class 1-A take turns going with them and they record the whole thing. People is really into that, specially when they get Bakugo screaming at both of them for being terrible at driving. After every session, Tomura buys them ice-cream and they sit around while he asks what have they been doing at UA.

Dabi goes with Natsuo when he decides to get his first tattoo. Actually, they end up getting matching tattoos as a promise to never get apart again. Shoto wants one two but Fuyumi is making him wait until he's 21 years old.

Eri once sees Toga smiling and she goes to hug her, telling her that crying is okay too. Everyone goes deadly quiet as Toga suddenly cries a little, hugging Eri back. The girl who can't smile is smiling and the girl who can't cry is crying. And they're doing it because they're happy.

Dabi and Shoto take turns mocking Bakugo while Shigaraki and Deku take turns defending him. Which is really funny because them you have Toga and Uraraka pointing out which team is winning.

Bakugo gets to punch everyone at least once. At least people stop him before he goes against Toga and Uraraka. That'd be a hell of a fight.

The girls at class 1a and class 1b adore Toga and they always invite her when they're going out. Tomura drives her to the place and gives her money to buy ice-cream.

Speaking of which: have you ever thought about Kirishima punching Dabi and Shigaraki just once for kidnapping Bakugo and then going "okay, and now let's hug".

Spinner is like a big brother for the whole class 1b. They are always calling him for advice and help. Once they all decided to cosplay him for Halloween and he almost cried.

Hatsume gets all excited when Compress asks her if she can do a prosthesis for him. He let's the kids at UA create him support tech that he tests. He finds it pretty funny.

Eri tests her power on Dabi every few moths to keep his body from going worst. He messes her hair every time, pointing out how cool is her horn. She reminds him a lot of Tomura and that makes him a little nostalgic.

They find pics of Tomura as a kid by pure luck. He's with his sister and his mother and his grandparents, his father taking the photo. They also find the photo of Nana with Kotaro. Tomura let's All Might keep that one.

When Tomura first meets Momo it hits him how much she reminds him of Hana. He's ashamed at first but eventually he tells the class about his sister. The girls are nicer to him after that and so are the boys.

Rei invites Toga and Tomura for dinner every few weeks. Toga and Shoto are somehow friends, because they can rant about Deku and not understanding people. Since the first meeting, Natsuo became sort of friends with Tomura because they are the same age.

Natsuo invites Tomura to sport games and to the cinema sometimes and Fuyumi worries, but after some time she realizes Dabi is right. Tomura is not a danger to Natsuo.

Spinner joins them after a while. They are not like a crazy trio ranting about sports and movies. Spinner even finds a way to take Natsuo to the gym with him and now they train together.

Tomura and Dabi sometimes disappear together at night. They're on the roof, watching the stars. Those nights when they're feeling raw and violent, they prefer to go with Kurogiri and stay there for some time. Those days are hard, specially because it's easy to miss the friends that did not make it out alive, but they have each other and they hold tight together.

Mr. Compress helps the following years with the cultural festival. Everything is colorful and dramatic and lovely. He is like the special guest. Kurogiri visits the city those days.

Inko finds herself protecting Tomura more than once, mothering him about his scratching and scars. He's constantly eating with the Midoriyas.

Toga and Monoma become besties and no one knows who that happened. She spents a lot of time around class 1b. She also teaches Shinso how to become invisible. Present Mic gets kinda nervous but Aizawa finds it interesting. Well, that kid stabbed him once, she's good. Shinso can learn a bunch from her.

Kurogiri starts helping Fuyumi with teaching kids somehow too. He's really patient and kids adore to play around with his misty form. Fuyumi finds him reliable and responsible. Who would guess they'd find comfort in each other.

Tensei, Iida's brother, gets help from Natsuo with his therapy. Iida and Deku get Melissa Shield to help him with new tech support. He finds a way to work as a minor hero again, and he trains a lot with Compress, both of them trying to regain more mobility.

The best day of Tomura's life is when Stain recognizes he was right. Also? Iida and Tomura bonding over hating Stain? Think about the possibilities.

Tomura teaches Uraraka how to win money online playing games. She's AMAZING at that. Dabi and Shoto secretly gives her a lot of money on her streams. Dabi because he can waste Enji's money and Shoto for the same reason, plus she's her friend.

Tsuyu and Spinner bonding over the stress of their friends being morons. Also they enjoy each other's company a lot.

Dabi and Denki and Cami speaking in memes and only Present Mic is able to translate.

Tomura and Uraraka bonding over not being able to touch things with all their fingers.

Dabi and Sero doing pranks with Sero's tape.

Dabi is definitely a bad influence for class 1a. And even a wrost influence for class 1b.

Tomura is not better but at least he teaches them important stuff.

Dabi will deny to his death that he likes those kids. Tomura teases him constantly.

Toga has a secret account to post stuff about Tomura and Dabi and how they are secretly in love. Class 1a and class 1b join. Soon they're losing their shit all the time around them and they both are angry because they don't know what's happening.

And then class 1b makes it a competition because they ship Spinner and Shigaraki better. It is a naive game, Tomura can't be mad because it's really chaotic, but he asks them eventually to tone it down because they're crossing some limits.

Dabi and Spinner are clueless.

Kurogiri says he ships Tomura with happiness when they ask him.

Then proceeds to say he adores Spinner.

Shoto gets insulted in behalf of his brother and he gets Compress to say he prefers Shigaraki with Dabi.

When they officially asks Shigaraki, he send the meme of "Both? Both. Both is good". Next day Vlad King and Aizawa has to endlessly ask them to stop laughing in class. Specially when Tomura walks in wirh the biggest smirk ever.

BNHA Chapter 286: “HOW DARE YOU THAT’S MY KACCHAAAAAANNNN”

WTF is happening to your jaw Kacchan? How does being impaled apparently dislocate your lower jaw?

OOH BOY MAXIMUM MADMAN DEKU TIME. We all knew that was coming.

AND DAMN. It’s like Hori watched episode 76, realiazed “Oh shit my art of Madman Deku is getting outpaced by the anime” and decided to dial THAT scene up to 100. (Cause of course it is. It’s KACCHAN.)

It’s like Uraraka is summarizing 2020 in a nutshell. And she’s sharp enough to say “yeah this all started with USJ”.

This boy is not having a good day. Two boyfriends down and none to spare.

I guess it seems like I’m not freaking out much about Deku being in danger in comparison with Kacchan. It’s not that I don’t love Deku (I do, he’s my favorite) it’s just that he’s the Main Character and he’s narrating the story from the future. So I kinda have a feeling that he’s not about to die right here. Or ever.  

Though of course his boyfriends don’t know that, so they get to have lots of panicked Angst as they freak out seeing him nearly die. Poor Todo. 

OOH Now OFA space is the Hands and the Abs as well as the head! Not sure what that means but it’s probably a good thing. 

Ooh is Deku gonna have that Hero-Villain empathy towards Shigaraki now? SEe him as a victim of AFO? ARe we gonna have Deku’s first Talk no Jutsu in this arc? (Probably not but one hopes)

OOH YES NANA! Come in and save your dumbass successor. He’s gone into the Avatar State to save his love interest from harm, he needs to know all the facts of OFA State anger.  Let’s get this arc some salvation before Deku’s gonna need mechanical arms and an obituary for boyfriend #1. YOU GOT THIS NANA. GO EFF AFO UPPPPP.

I guess I’m glad this chapter is acting more like we hoped it would - aka Deku going nuts for revenge rather than Baku being like “so long ya’ll it’s been fun”. He’s still not out of the woods yet but hey it’s a start! Keep him safe Todo. And maybe help Midoriya too. Or team Ochako. You all haven’t had your moment yet, time for the Hado trio & Iida to save the day. And Nana. Power of Friendship, save the day!

BnHA 322 - Parallels and comparisons

Not gonna lie — the first part of this arc was really rough. Luckily, from 317 onwards we’ve had some jaw dropping, beautiful moments. This chapter came on strong with ALL the feels and ALL the imagery. (I’m not going to post those images because they really need to be read fully in context.) Bakugo and Izuku as their elementary/middle/high school selves, standing on puddles of water instead of submerged in a river, Bakugo bowing to Izuku and addressing him by his real name, Bakugo essentially telling Izuku that he is — and always has been — a hero, Bakugo racing to catch Izuku with both arms when he falls, Bakugo’s war injury bleeding as he “reopens” his childhood wound.

Here’s the most impressive part to me: Bakugo courageously lays it all bare in front of the class without demanding that they “watch him” or be his audience. He no longer cares about being vulnerable in front of them, so if they happen to be there it’s fine, but he’s not apologizing FOR them or FOR him — it’s something he has to do for Izuku. Bakugo may still have his eyes set on surpassing All Might, but damn if he didn’t just surpass Enji. And Shoto fucking knows it.

After such intensity from Bakugo, I highkey love that we DON’T get an immediate reaction from Izuku. Instead, Izuku is inspired to offer his own mea culpa. (As always, Izuku looks up to and imitates Bakugo before thinking about himself.) The class just watched Bakugo apologize for his worst, and now they’ll watch Izuku apologize for HIS worst. I mean, Izuku said, OUT LOUD, the exact thing DvK2!Bakugo accused him of — looking down on others. If Bakugo can get past his bullshit and recognize Izuku’s heroism, Izuku can apologize for hurting his classmates and recognize their heroism. With everything out in the open, Bakugo and Izuku are no longer “proper rivals,” but TEAMMATES. There’s still a long way to go until they’re effective as a team with the rest of the class, but this is where the unity of the team begins. Kamino, the exact place where All Might ended, is now this team’s starting line, as Momo points out.

It’s also good to see the story acknowledge, again, that Izuku isn’t dark or edgy. He IS still the same sweet kid but AFO had him trapped in a loop. He was scared out of his mind that people would get hurt because of him and because of that he couldn’t think of a strategy to find and defeat AFO, but if he accepted help from others to come up with a strategy, then they could get hurt because of him… and around we go. This is the true terror of AFO, leaving no options for a zero-risk victory.

Next we jump to an unrecognizable UA fortified with most intense wall since Game of Thrones (because that wall was so good at keeping out the White Walkers /s). Look, we all know it’s gonna fail, but in the meantime I very much enjoy rat principal building an elaborate cage for his humans.

Also, sounds like we’ll soon see Shiketsu (Inasa! Camie! Hair dude! Meatball dude!) but no Ketsubutsu (Ms. Joke, Shindo, turtle girl). I still want to see Ms. Joke in the aftermath of the war, but I accept it’s probably not gonna happen.

It wasn’t clear from the text leaks, but looking at the images of the full chapter, it does seem Ochako’s going to try and confront the angry mob, which makes my brain think of scenes like this:

Which is to say, I have concerns this will go well. Yes, I know BNHA is a shonen, so the teens will change the world. But even within the BNHA world, suspension of disbelief is required when Present Mic, a popular radio host and pro hero who arrested Dr. Ujiko, is getting shit from the crowd. Of course, “heroes” as a group are at fault for the war, and Mic struggled with the media the last time UA was breached.

(But Mic does take a gentler approach with civilians vs the media.)

If civilians are in such a frenzy that they’re angry at Mic (who DID succeed at something notable during the war raid) and Deku (a child who fought in the war and has been rounding up Tartarus-level jail breakers ever since), then Ochako needs to BRING IT like it’s never been broughten before to make a difference. While she’s never had a major media stumble, and she’s adorable AF, giving inspirational speeches and rallying the class has never been her strength. If she suddenly blinds the crowd with brilliant oratory, it’s a bit of an ass pull for her character. Jiro and Momo have more depth in this space, though Momo’s elite background may not help in this particular situation. Ochako’s become much better at working the bureaucracy, from the entrance exam where she asked Present Mic to give her points to Izuku, to appealing to Nezu in order to bring Endeavor to UA for a confrontation about Deku.

If a crowd speech really is in store for us, then I’d love for it to involve All Might and/or Stain somehow. Both of them have incredible charisma and can inspire civilians to action. And I’ve written before about All Might’s media whoring [affectionate] being its own super power that the pro heroes are ignoring. Nobody in this arc (including Deku) has used All Might as a resource based on his decades of experience with the media OR with AFO. Why is everyone acting like All Might is useless because he’s quirkless and no longer a ranked hero? He's still got his brain and his memories. Does a "hero" need to wear a costume or hold a license to use their brain? As Kirishima says in this chapter:

Or maybe Aizawa will finally appear to defend his problem child, just like he defended Bakugo previously? (Admittedly, my solution for everything rn is “Aizawa” because I’m dying to see him.)

Anyway….I love that Ochako was inspired by Bakugo. Her face before/during/after the apology is amazing. You can watch her recognize his courage in real time and build on it, like links in a chain. Like a power that grows as each person contributes…….huh…….

Also, I think Izuku needs to hear Ochako talk openly about helping the heroes who protect the citizens. He doesn’t really understand her style of heroism yet, and he needs to see the strength of her ideals —especially the power of saving and rescuing — before he sets off to save Shigaraki. She also needs to tell him what happened to her in the war aftermath, because he doesn’t know any of it. How she fought Toga and how Toga cried. How she watched other heroes quit, and how she’s inspired to help heroes who are in pain. It would be great to see Ochako and Izuku bond over a shared desire to save heroes AND villains who are in pain.

Finally, I want to appreciate the Izuku-Iida-Kirishima trio for one more moment. In this chapter, Kirishima skids to a halt catching Izuku, just as he caught Bakugo for the initial escape from Kamino. In both instances, Kirishima’s understated but steady and unbreakable commitment to his friends was CLUTCH. So, so good!
