Spanish ones really depend on the region and country, but my favourites are:
¿Quién te dio vela en este entierro? - Who gave you a candle in this funeral? As in this is not your business, you're being nosy.
Al pedo como bocina de avión - Useless as an airplane's horn. Self-explanatory haha
Cada muerte de obispo. Something like...As often as a bishop's death. Used to describe something that happens very very infrequently, once in a blue moon.
In Argentina, when pouring a mate (infusion/drink) for a friend, if the mate has a lot of water and it requires a lot of time drinking it, they might say 'Uf, largo como pedo de culebra', which is 'Oof, long like a snake's fart' hahaha
Stage 1: using your native language's idioms in English out of habit/lack of knowledge
Stage 2: using English idioms as much as you can to prove that you're good at English
Stage 3: using your native language's idioms in English because they fuck actually
#there are so many more#but i have no idea how to translate them#specially the ones that use lunfardo instead of spanish#idioms are so much fun#'to honour which saint?' is the best one on this list hahaha <3

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded mfer happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.
#seeing some discourse and im not saying lucy grey didnt know#im saying she never dropped the kind of hints that she knew like she did in the movie#or if she did snow isnt worried about them until he very suddenly is consumed by them#snow is not concerned about whether or not she believed him. of course she did! hes snow!#but then shes gone…. for a while……#and its the sudden immediate drastic unravelling that comes across so clearly in the book#that i knew wouldn’t translate to screen yet still cant help but miss#the hunger games#coriolanus snow#tbosas#lucy gray baird#not a crime or anything just a note that i cannot stop thinking about#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#this is all from memory of reading it quite a while ago. so maybe 3 pages is an exaggeration#but i remember it happening VERY quickly and without much external cause#like we as the reader have no indication as to whether shes nearby or not.#snow has no idea either. he just SUSPECTS. and his suspicion breeds the hatred that has been bubbling inside him all this time#he hates how she undoes him. he hates that he WOULD run away with her if shed let him keep his secrets#and he HATES more than anything that she makes him WANT to tell his secrets#he wants to be vulnerable and reveal the ugly nasty parts about himself and still be loved#but he does not let himself and it is everyone’s downfall#he chooses cruelty bc it is easy and familiar and makes him feel more powerful than the vulnerable give and take that real love requires

Animal Talent!Scar and his trusty steed, Jellie the cat!
Also I wanted to infodump about the ConVex in this AU:
Fairies become Vexes when directly exposed to large amounts of corrupted magic which changes them both physically and mentally, making them vicious and blood thirsty
The process is reversible, but requires restraining the Vex which can be quite the challenge. And even when cured, the Vex magic will leave permanent changes to the fairy’s body, like lingering blue pigmentation, slightly sharpened teeth and altered wing shape
Neither Cub nor Scar will tell anyone how exactly they managed to expose themselves to enough corrupted magic to get turned into Vexes
But based on the faces they make when asked, it probably happened because they were doing something very, very stupid.
#hermit hollow au#you know I HAD to add vex lore to this au#vexes are basically evil Minecraft fairies#it’d be a crime not to incorporate them somehow#also it’s So Fun drawing vex!scar#side note: you have NO IDEA how hard it was trying to translate cubs lab coat into something a fairy would wear#mcyt#hermitcraft#hermitcraft au#hermitcraft x tinkerbell#convex#goodtimeswithscar#animal talent!scar#cubfan135#dust talent!cub#the dork doodles

Ride 787: The back that was pushed!!
Pag 1
1: Packed with the passion of everyone in Sohoku... a full throttle injection of will-power!!
Pag 2
1: Iitsuka-san!!
Goo Fukuoka!!
Oh, Tomaribata!!
Fukuoka, take the mountain!!
2: What about Hakogaku's Manami!?
3: Don't worry about him. He did catch up to me but then suddenly stopped
When I shouted at him, he closed his eyes and fell silent!!
4: Is it because he found out that Iitsuka-san is Fukuoka Josei's “mountain shogun”?
Yeah, probably!!
Amazing!!
5: Let's take the lead now!!
Ahead there's also Fujiwara-san from the Kyuushu team Kumadai!!
6: But anyway for a moment I was so scared....
Pag 3
1: When Hakogaku sent ahead their ace Manami!!
2: I can hear it
4: The first day's mountain prize!! Let's take it, at our hometown's Inter High!!
5: Wait....!!
6: “The sound of wheels”? “He's catching up”?
Could it be that Manami is waiting for someone?
Pag 4
1: And that's why he slowed down....!?
2: Raise your pace, Tomaribata!!
4: We're still at the start of the mountain, if we use up our legs here....
It's fine, we'll establish a good distance now
Huh!? But
Think, idiot!! If you think about it, you'll get it!! The person Manami slowed his legs down to wait for....
Pag 5
1: It's Sohoku's “Mountain King”!!
Pag 8
1: Mountain King!!
2: Fo-fo-for the first day's mountain!?
Why even the Mountain King, even the Mountain King!!
I don't know!! I don't know but that doesn't change the reality!!
3: Last year so many times we couldn't race each other
So I thought that maybe this year too...
4: What do I do if he doesn't come, I thought....
5: I was scared
6: For a while I couldn't even open my eyes
Pag 9
2: I caught up
4: Thank god it's real!!
Pag 10
1: You came, Sakamichi-kun
Yeah!! Manami-kun!!
Pag 11
1: Can we race?
2: Yes!!
Pag 12
3: Everyone in the team pushed my back!!
Pag 13
1: Onoda-kun!!
2: He should have caught up with Manami around now!!
3: Onoda-san!!
4: Hahaha!!
5: Back-gate slope-senpai!!
6: At full throttle!!
At full throttle!!
Run!!
Please run!!
Pag 14
1: Nghh...!!
2: “Nghhh” it's right!!
3: Ahaha
Hahaha
They're suddenly laughing, let's raise our pace!!
Yes!!
4: It was during your training camp on our first year
5: When we raced for the first time
6: I remember I was so excited when I heard that our names were “Sakamichi” and “Sangaku”
It's the perfect combo!!
Pag 15
1: I was surprised you didn't even have your feet fastening on
We stopped at the summer house and talked
2: We were so free back then!!
We didn't have any responsibility, not teams nor jerseys!!
3: Ahaha
4: When you're in second and third year the things you have to do increases so much....
5: I'd throw this “captain” title away anytime!!
Hahaha I get it, it's difficult for me too
Pag 16
1: If someone on my team heard that they would get angry
Doubashi-kun especially would get angry!!
Sounds scary...
4: You're wearing the number “3”
Ah, yeah, uhm, we talked with everyone on the team
Huh.... on official races the winner of the previous year should wear the number “1”
5: I see, leave it to me then
I'll push through, hahaha!!
Thank you!!
Is.. is that alright?
Waa, Pierre-sensei is so reliable!!
6: Your teacher....!!
Then...
7: Yeah, “3” like Makishima-san's “173”
Pag 17
1: I'm also wearing Toudou-san's number “13”
2: “Sleeping beauty”!!
Kuah!! Toudou!!
Pag 18
1: That day, the first day of the Inter High two years ago
2: While we were pulling the team, I imagined those two fighting for the mountain prize....
3: I'm sure they must be having fun
Fighting until you're empty
It can't not be fun!!
4: We can't go right now, but let's do it
A fight until the last drop, until our limits!!
Yeah!!
5: We promised to race
Today may be the day to truly make that wish....
Pag 19
1: come true!!
Pag 20
1: Our third year, the last Inter High
2: The first day.... a fight to compete only for the colored bib
3: The purity of this race is infinitely high!!
4: Yeah!!
Pag 21
5: Let's do it, Manami-kun!!
Pag 22
2: I've been waiting to hear those words!!

{Retrouvaille}
Thoughts below:
I wanted to go with Metanoia (spiritual conversion) for the title but Retrouvaille sounded thematically stronger and fitting. It means reunion between loved ones who were separated apart for a long time. :)
The flowers shown in one of the panels are:
Lady's thimble (harebell/bellflower) = grief, submission
Teasel (dipsacus) = misanthropy
Pheasant's eyes (adonis) = sorrowful memories, I cannot forget you
Morning bride (scabiosa) = I have lost all
If you also are able to catch the reference in the last page, I applaud you!! You get a cookie :)🍪
#pokemon xy#pokemon x and y#pokemon az#az pokemon#trainer az#eternal flower floette#lysandre pokemon#zygarde#serena pokemon#pokemon art#pokemon#my art#another introspective story#pokemon fanart#i love doing this cause it gives me a sense of clarity and catharsis for my own self too. Like it clears up the smog of thoughts#that i have internalized for a long time#plus it feels cool to navigate the story through that character's perspective and translate their thoughts#the man at the bottom of the 1st page is lysandre's ancestor...#az has been such a interesting character for me despite his unfortunately limited role/appearance (nevertheless a compelling story)#working with his character gave me some sort of relief + inspired new ideas to work with.#the ceremony scene is profound to me not only because of the reunion but also how az asks the protag to teach them what a trainer is#like reverse of elder-young dynamics and in a way passing the “crown” to the protag given they are the new champion (role of significance)

Happy Kagepro Day!!!
#kido tsubomi#seto kousuke#kano shuuya#kagerou project#kagepro#choco art#last thursday I was like “oh shit. I don't have anything ready for the fifteenth”#And then rushed to make these#there are a few things I'd like to change or adjust on some of them (like the colors on kido's) but aside from that I'm pretty happy#seto's was the hardest. first I kept trying to daw a bird for the silhouette window thing#but I kept erasing it because I wasn't happy with it#then I was flicking through my screenshots of his song's video and realized "wait. What if the tv him and little him are sitting on is the#ilhouette? Then I kept the birds but put them in a circular pattern in a way reminiscent of how the scissors and knives(?) were around him#in certain shots (btw. does anyone have ANY idea what the gossip he was getting from that bird in his introduction was?)#The background I wish I had done more with but I was drawing a blank on ideas so... the outside of Mary's house it is#kano's - in contrast - was the easiest.#I was like “his silhouette's a cat. the background will definitely be a reference to his song.”#Honestly the masks were the hardest part because it was a little difficult to get good pics of any other than the red-eyed mask#Also something looks off about him to me but I wasn't about to fight the picture so I didn't fiddle with it too much before inking#maybe his face just translates into my style weirdly#not much to say about Kido. Except I really wish I did the equalizer bars differently and will definitely be changing that if I ever get ar#und to making these digitally. Also#I'd alter the shades of colors I chose for the music staffs but that bugs me a lot less than those fri#cking equalizer bars#did I really just go on a whole ass rant about my decisions in these drawings?#I guess I did. Whoops?

Not me learning from crunchy fb page posting abt today (march 2nd) being Sanji's birthday that man has the same astrological sign as me (pisces) and then looking up Zoro's birthday on the wiki and he's a fucking scorpio (november 11th), why are neither of these surprising
#one piece#zosan#I WOULD LIKE TO DECLARE THAT I AM NOT ONE OF THE ASTROLOGY PEOPLE#I merely had a phase when I was a wee child and have retained the rough calendar order and general vibes of some signs ok ssshhhhh#it also means one of them is about half a year older than the other but unless we figure out what time of year the show started#we won't know which one#(cause they're the same age at time of debut and time skip)#like my guess would be summer which would make zoro older#which would be very fucking funny and 100% in line with their dynamic#but also I have no idea how to assess seasons in the world and usually tropical climate of one piece#or even which hemisphere would translate to which of ours on their planet

Since he built the Arcadia seemingly from nothing I think it stands to reason that Tochiro also programmed its operating system
#sorry these drawings suck dog butt I've been very strapped for time and energy for personal work#captain harlock#harlock#albator#spch#space pirate captain harlock#endless orbit ssx#eo ssx#tochiro oyama#yattaran#and the return of ghost tochiro#digital#art#sketchbook#comic#technically even on a good day I just kinda draw them way off but i guess drawing them incorrectly is better than not drawing them at all?#there was meant to be actual technobabble in the third panel but I realized as I was writing that I have no idea how to technobabble#trying to figure out how to write in a character's ''voice'' when it's already been filtered through a translation is interesting#because that translation is always going to be somewhat innacurate to the intended spirit just because of how languages are#so I can only hope that I'm writing these characters in a way that *sounds* correct because I know it can't ever *be* fully correct#had these thoughts while realizing I have no idea how to ''voice'' Yattaran aha..........

The Annotated Arabian Nights: Tales from 1001 Nights, edited with an introduction and notes by Paulo Lemos Horta, translated by Yasmine Seale
#book club tag#you have no idea how fucking hyped i am about this english translation oh my god#also. ngl. if you were excited about emily wilson's translation of the iliad/odyssey. maybe. spread that hype with yasmine seale's#arabian nights. perhaps. it is DEEPLY important from a cultural-language translation aspect esp wrt to the racist and orientalist#translation choices of earlier translations. also if you've never read any of the actual arabian nights tales. consider. reading them#....i might make a side blog just for this kind of thing. a book club side blog. i just got really excited abt this translation and wanted#to share it with all of you!!!#i will make a sideblog later

What do you think of Azula with the Gaang? And how would Azula get along with them? What things do they mutually share?
Thanks for the question, Amor!
With Aang.
I think they both share how they were child prodigies who suffered from loneliness when they were called the best, you know, the master of the blue flame and the avatar.
They also share how they both don't have parents, although Aang had his teacher (I forgot his name) as his father figure, but he wasn't really his father. meanwhile Azula didn't really have a parent/ mother figure, or at least they didn't act like that.
They are both nobody's children. And I feel like they would get along well, they would both teach each other how to improve as a person and control their elements better.
With Katara.
They both suffered the loss of their mothers from a very young age, although Azula never really had one.
They are also prodigies, the best in their fields, with annoying older brothers.
I like to imagine that they would get along and both would team up to annoy their brothers.
With Sokka.
They are geniuses, or at least Sokka is better than average.
I bet they'd both get along because they're nerds, and they both have a greater sense of loyalty than each other.
but I like the headcanon that it's an adopted older brother/adopted younger sister relationship.
With Suki.
They are born leaders, they both share the desire to fight for others and are very protective of their loved ones.
They would get along if there wasn't a war, or maybe they would be sparring partners after the war.
And finally with Toph.
They both share loneliness and abandonment by their parents, although neither of them would talk about their problems, at least until they are going through a difficult time.
And they would be the explosive dynamic duo, although obviously Azula would be the most responsible and think logically, but sometimes she forgets and becomes just as chaotic as Toph.
Without a doubt Toph is Azula's bad influence.
And I think the one who would get along best with Azula would be Aang, they both share many things in common.
#Azula#Aang#Katara#Sokka#Suki#Toph#atla#avatar: the last airbender#Azula and Aang have the relationship of siblings without parents who care for/protect each other#and no one is going to get that idea out of me.#Azula and Katara team up to annoy their older siblings when they get irritated with them#it's a silent pact between them.#Azula and Sokka spend nights doing research and plans on how to improve the world.#Azula and Suki training partners who destroy the entire training field.#Someone keep Azula and Toph away because they destroy the world together.#Obviously I didn't put Zuko in because we all know what their relationship is like.#translator#traductor

you know what would be fun?
A puzzle game where you're given a bunch of different objects, magazines, books, food labels, et cetera, all with a made up language on them. Then, with just the objects you're given, you have to decipher how to read the conlang your only clues come from the pictures and contents of the items
say for example, the game gives you two cans they're different brands, but two of the words on the front of them match the game lets you open the cans, and inside you find that both are filled with tomato soup ergo, you can conclude that the shared words mean "tomato soup"
then you can take another can, this one only shares one word and is filled with vegetable soup. Therefore, that single word that all three cans share must mean "soup" and by process of elimination the other word means "tomato"
and the idea is you keep doing this with different words till you can fully translate everything
#ideas#game ideas#a few of the beginner objects it might give you could be children's books and flashcards and food items with simple labels#like say there's salt and pepper shakers that are labeled#to make it easier on the player#maybe there's a system that lets you connect one of the made up words with a real word an object or a picture#and if you match them correctly it translates the word on all the in game objects#so like for the tomato soup cans#you could click the shared word on the can label then connect it to the soup in the cans#and after you do that the word will get translated on the label#I guess it would depend on how complex the conlang is#maybe you can select the word and then it'll bring up a tooltip with the translation if you've already discovered it#I say all this as if I actually have the programming knowledge to actually make something like this (I do not)

The thing with stories of any type is that everything is a translation. Sometimes literally, from the author's own head, from another language, from book to TV.
Then there's things like visual metaphors, props and fake backgrounds, set pieces, onomatopoeia, paragraphs of description that everyone will visualise slightly differently, animated contortions, unrealistic but helpful sound effects, camera angles to emphasise mood.
In fantasy or scifi settings you can't even assume they're speaking the language you do. That their culture is exactly what's shown and nothing more.
So much of what makes up good world building is shorthand, is making it work to the audience, is using something in the right context rather than digging up every detail that would make or break the illusion.
A character in a magical world, or even simply a non English speaking country, would not use the same curse words. Leather could be presumed to be cow but could just as easily be any number of bizarre creatures. Booking a hotel could require a very different system to one we're used to. Champagne, the word, wouldn't exist without France but it carries the meaning of expensive alcohol for celebrations and parties, the readers would understand what it means.
Tolkien did it with LOTR and it was a masterpiece. The prevalent themes of dark and light being mere shorthand for expansive good and evil, used to convey the messages it needed rather than entirely new words the readers wouldn't intuit? The characters not even going by their actual names? A whole entire conlang that never even gets mentioned in the actual story??? That's a man who has a grasp on how tightly interconnected the world, history and culture all reflect each other. I mean of course he did, it was his job, but what he did was nothing short of fantastical.
All this to say, I believe this is the root of all world building. Cohesive, well balanced, feasible, detailed-but-not-too-much, no words that'd break a reader's/viewer's immersion, expansive enough, realistic, resonant, coherent, believable. All of it, whether fantastical or realistic, stems from one thing.
Is this a good translation of what you had in your head?
#All of this and it's a post about how people occasionally have svsss characters swear which is great for making them feel alive#But it's also a pretty big plot point that Sqq caught sqh out as being from another universe entirely after hearing one (1) f bomb#Of course neither Sqq nor sqh would be saying that PARTICULAR word because they're Chinese but that's the literal irl translation lmao#That's what I mean though!! *slaps desk* isn't it so cool??#In cartoons and animation when backgrounds change and people get big heads when yelling and lightning crackles#The characters aren't actually seeing that. That's just the way it's (emotion) being conveyed to the viewer.#It can be a weird way to think of it because they're not real they're not seeing anything lmao but it's massively helpful#If you want to make your own thing or struggle to reconcile an immerse breaking moment in media.#Lampshading is a perfect example of this. There's always going to be cracks in the immersion mask - how are they dealt with?#svsss#world building#worldbuilding#story writing#story ideas#writing#fiction

The poem evokes human greatness and human vulnerability. People are “godlike” in their courage and skill, but even the greatest mortals fall and clutch the dust between their bloody fingers. The beautiful word minunthadios , “short-lived,” is used of both Achilles and Hector, and applies to all of us. We die too soon, and there is no adequate recompense for the terrible, inevitable loss of life. Yet through poetry, the words, actions, and feelings of some long-ago brief lives may be remembered even three thousand years later.
--Emily Wilson's introduction to the Iliad
#so. we've come to the Iliad section in my Early World Literature class. and in that context we're utilizing the public domain translation by#A. S. Kline which made me think: you know what would be extremely fucking cool? since I'm going to have access to the Kline text until#the course closes in December. why don't I at least start the Wilson version and see how the two translations differ? so I'm now reading#The Iliad#as translated by Wilson and performed by the utterly masterful Audra McDonald. or well. I _would be except I'm so delighted. stunned. by#the incisive thought-provokingness of her introduction I keep needing to pause and write down various quotes: just this whole idea of#the poem revolving around how all all our deaths shall come too soon and there is no adequate compensation for that awful fact just FUCK#linguistics#mythology#folklore#fairy tales#lit geekery#book babbling#(oh I am already so fucking deep in this fannish hell and I haven't even really started her translation: like the Kline one is fine. but#it's very focused on *trying* to be Homeric you know? so there are all these very archaic references ala to Apollo#as Smintheus. which I then have to stop and look up oh. that means he's the mouse god and being the mouse god is important because#it ties back to him being an oracular god. which is then why the Greeks want to turn to another oracular god when he gets all pissy at them#and on one level. learning that mice were associated with the power of prophecy? extremely cool shit. on the other. well I have to#read a large chunk of this text in a fucking week Kline my good bud was it really necessary to provide an odd mouse reference I then#needed to find the context for *myself* I can already tell Wilson's tendency to provide context. both in the intro and just in general#wanting to make it readable terms will make this so! much easier of an introduction. (Kline. by contrast. would be really fucking cool if#you were a third-time reader and wanted all the marvelous nuance. just *rubs forehead* not a great intro when you're only focusing on#this text for a fucking week)
