the spine and his humanity : a very unorganized deep dive. this will be split into different paragraphs, each with a different topic, just to try and make things easier to digest.

The Spine, as we know, was the walter robot that was built to look the most human. named after his spine, which used to be a smoke stack, before he his spine was rebuilt out of titanium alloy. before a lot of the war stuff was retconned, he was built to look more human to do special ops - so they could send in the spine instead of risking human lives.

throughout their albums, The Spine has several songs in which he’s the lead vocalist that talk about how he feels the need to apologize for being a robot, or talking about how robots cannot feel the way humans do, both physically and emotionally ( hot on the trail, wired wrong, electricity is in my soul, a life of un-delightment, etc. ) and he seems to be the walter automaton that hates being a robot the most ( save for the jon, but that’s a completely different topic altogether ). he talks to humans, sure, but when he has the choice - he holes himself up in the hall of wires and stays on the computer. it’s almost as if he doesn’t believe he shouldn’t to talk to them because he’s not human enough.

this brings me to my next topic of stage bits. now, a lot of these are played for laughs ( and are improv ), but an overarching character choice i’ve noticed for The Spine is how he interjects things whenever the topic of them being robots comes up. the one that sticks most in my mind is the 10 year anniversary show, where Hatchworth tells them the goldfish they ripped up were made by a third grader. Rabbit says that they’re monsters, to which The Spine replies “we’re robots, we’re almost monsters.” now, this could mean a lot of different things ─ but it all comes back to the fact that The Spine does not see himself and, by proxy, his siblings, as people. they’re living things, sure, but by referring to them as monsters, he’s saying they’re something to be wary of. something to gawk at, or even something to fear. ( there’s also the whole phone conversation in which they say that The Spine hates The Spine more than anyone else, which i could also write an essay about ). 

the topic of stage bits also ties into his relationship with food, eating, and drinking. during some performances of brass goggles, they have tea time, where the walter workers come out and serve the robots tea. while the robots’ reactions to the tea vary from show to show, The Spine is the only one who consistently never drinks it - either dumping it on himself or throwing it over his shoulder. he also consistently never eats anything, and even goes as far as to tell the other robots that robots can’t eat. no matter how much he tries, they usually disregard him and go on eating anyways. now, he’s also the Rule Follower of the walters, with both Hatchworth and Rabbit having snuck out of the manor unaccompanied using disguises ( rabbit wearing a fake mustache and hatchworth wearing a fake mustache on top of his mustache ), so he may not be eating simply because he doesn’t want to gum up his gears. but, it could very well be that he refuses to eat because he doesn’t want to make himself feel more human than he actually is.

my final point : the spine distances himself from humans and his humanity far more than the others do, and i think that’s because he wants nothing more than to be human. but because he can’t, because of the metal he’s made out of, he refuses to allow himself to indulge in the things that humans do. he doesn’t see himself as human enough, so why act human? why allow himself to enjoy the thing he so desperately wants? instead, he folds in on himself, repressing his deepest wants, desires, and even his emotions.

the default awareness level of creature actors added to adventures (specifically when you add a new actor, not change an existing one to another creature) will depend on the amount of eyes they have

for example, a creature with no eyes will have no awareness either

a creature with 1 individual eye part (which can be one centered eye or two paired eyes) will have a vision of 10. and more eyes will bump that up in increments of 10

heres some research. i tested and it does actually seem to be dependent on the amount of eyes, not the individual eye parts with their dna costs. these are all creatures with 4 eyes, but they keep the same exact awareness value, regardless of the four eyes being centered and taking up more dna points, or them being asymmetric, or not

five eyes (4 asymmetric & 1 centered here) will also have an awareness of 20

and same with six eyes regardless of arrangement

in fact, froofa has 14 (7 pairs) eyes, and the awareness level stayed at 20

so i made a creature with as many eye parts as possible, that being 40 (20 pairs). that DID put the awareness level at 50, so it doesnt actually cap at 20. but im not sure at what amount of eyes it changes then

another theory is that it might be dependent on the cumulative modelCapabilityEye value of the eye parts. some eye parts actually have higher model capability eye values, specifically those closer to the right part of the column

it doesnt seem to apply with creatures that only have two eye parts, as both of these guys have the same awareness level of 10

but it does have SOME sort of effect. amarken here has 1 pair of eyes from the 4th column, 2 pairs of eyes + 2 additional center eyes from the 2nd column (and also a pair of ears if that matters); and thats enough to ALSO give it an awareness level of 50

so that suggests that the choice of eyes isnt purely cosmetic, technically??? even though they unlock in complete random order in creature stage, instead of only unlocking a part if the part on the same row from the previous column has been unlocked

this might also affect the npcs in creature stage though im not certain. in any case it affects the default values in adventures surprisingly enough

also it might possibly be based on modelCapabilitySense anyways. having other sense parts, such as ears and noses and antennae, but no eyes, doesnt actually seem to add to the awareness range at all; and all the eye parts have modelCapabilitySense, but the other sense parts actually dont! however this value stays at 1 for every eye part, and amarken seems to show that there DO seem to be actual levels for eyes

the ears instead have modelCapabilityEar with its own differing values (also 1 to 4), but im not sure if this is ever actually used. the noses and antennae have no model capabilities to speak of beyond the cuteness ones (also goes with mean values, almost every part has one of those and it might maybe be used? theyre more hidden part values)

So imo this is yet another parallel with JGY and WWX. In this line, he has reached the same point as WWX reached just prior to his banishment. JGY has always been ignored, betrayed, forced into a corner, because of his birth. WWX has the same issues - although he has good parentage, he is looked down on because he is an orphan, and there is a constant accusation of him actually being JFMs bastard son.

MXTX uses many characters to show how WWXs path *could* have gone, depending on what fate had in store for him, and his own choices. JGY's fall at the end is the same series of bad choices and consequences as WWX in Nightless City, and ends the same way, in death and infamy. His fate leaves you to ask - what could he have done differently? Where were his mistakes, and what path could he have taken?

I adore JGY, I find him such a beautifully complex character. Even after all his crimes and deceptions are revealed, I find myself empathising with the horrible positions he has been in.

In the show, he asks LXC at the end "what choice did I have? What else could I have done?" Beside him is standing WWX, who faced his own bad choices, and lost everything because of it. The cultivator society is leaving these people with few choices, and no good ones, because they are born lesser, no matter how brilliant and talented they are.

That's my theory anyway 😊

The fans: Ugh Sonic was just so preachy. I mean obviously he's supposed to be the good guy, so any uncomfortableness I feel here and any way I feel like Sonic's choices are framed as being why some other people have shitty lives is just bad writing because he is obviously supposed to be right always, but this characterization makes no sense. Isn't he right for the things he did?

Ian Flynn, using Kitsunami to say the (barely even at this point) quiet part even louder: Hey it's almost like ever since the Mr. Tinker event we've been purposely running with the critique of Sonic as being more selfish than he appears. Sonic is upholding a system of Eggman v Sonic that currently benefits him and shuts down talk of how to improve the current system because he likes his own personal enjoyment and he's attached enough to Eggman that he'd rather Eggman pretend to be a good person than be stuck in prison for life. He doesn't even quite practice what he preaches. We are trying to show that the current hero v villain system and Sonic's recklessness currently affects some people poorly and that Sonic isn't a perfect hero.

This is one of my many gripes with HoO. Rick should have really not included Percy in the main plot if he wanted others to shine. Or just done the whole "Romans were involved in the Titan War, and they fought against Kronos by assaulting his stronghold at Mt. Othrys" thing but with Percy and Annabeth. Because realistically, when everyone meets up for the first time, the Lost Trio should have absolutely known all of Percy's exploits. I refuse to believe that the campers at CHB didn't absolutely rave on about Percy. And the whole who should be the leader situation shouldn't have been a question at all. I mean the Savior of Olympus and the Commander of the Demigod Army of Olympus is among you, but by all means, fight about who to pick as leader. It's not like it's self-explanatory.

Plus, most of the time, they traveled by the sea routes. And it's hard not to make it all about Percy when they are literally in his domain. Plus, the whole Tartarus situation obviously highlighted Percy as well since he was the only realistic choice for someone who could survive Tartarus and fight his way through the pit.

And then some stans have the audacity to blame people who were hyped for Percy the most over the new characters arguing that they are the main characters not Percy. Come on you can't expect all the people who grew up with Percy Jackson books and absolutely love Percy to not be more hyped about his return.

Plus it would have been manageable if Percy was in only one or two books but Percy is 4 of the 5 major books and not just as cameos but literally a main character. So it is natural that he would overshadow the newer characters in comparison no matter what. Because at that point, no one in the Seven had anything that even remotely compared to Percy's feats.

Rick realized how much he fucked up by adding Percy into the story and had to change things up last minute. That's why BoO is such a shit finale. Percy didn’t even have a pov for the entirety of Blood of Olympus but he still he was the one whose blood Gaea awoke to and he was the key player in the last fight at Camp Half Blood. If Rick had been actually consistent throughout HoO and had the balls to continue with the story as is, then Percy would have been the Storm part of "To Storm or Fire the world must fall." Obviously, Percy can summon storms, hurricanes, and so on, but more importantly, we have clear information on which God is associated with storms. Poseidon is literally called Stormbringer multiple times throughout the original series, and Percy is his son so lore wise, logically, and also keeping with plot consistency. The Storm part should have been Percy.

Now, not only does it ruin the entire buildup leading up to the finale, but it also undermines the other characters who were almsot hastily shoveled into their roles in the finale. Jason deserved more and should have ended up in Octavian's position or higher. The Pontifex and so on. Frank should have made Praetor anyway, but I hate that all of his insecurity was resolved by giving him Mar's blessing and pulling a magical transformation. He deserved his own arc and to shine through his own strength and mindset. Leo's was decently done save for the whole Calypso Leo situation. Hazel was awesome in the last two books, but we totally needed more of her. Piper’s arc, I am not really sure about her. Feel free to reblog with your own ideas.

Don't even get me started on the whole Gaea being put back to sleep thing. That's an entire conversation in itself but the point is Rick chose not to exclude Percy or limit Percy's appearances in HoO then realized his monumental mistake and fucked it up at the last second.

when you get kidnapped and get your memories wiped by the queen of the gods for six months, have to trek across california, find this new camp of demigods, go on a quest to find their legion standard, get your memories back by gambling your life, fight off an army to defend this new camp of demigods, reunite with your girlfriend, get chased across the country by the demigods you fought to defend, fight your way through the deadly mediterranean, arrive in rome, send your girlfriend off for a suicide quest, fall into tartarus with said girlfriend, fight your way to the doors of death, escape tartarus, fight giants, get slapped back to camp half-blood, and then you get sidelined for the big fight because apparently you need to "take a step back"

i think a lot of people have never been in a truly desperate situation but think they have, and this causes them to pass really harsh judgment on people who made bad choices when either irrational or having no good choices to pick instead, and i really wish people could get some fucking self-perception and work on their compassion skills and not fucking do that as much anymore
