Hey bestie, dropping by with a mea culpa. When Peaceful Property started, you expressed concern that GMMTV was inching toward a model of using bl pairs in shows that would avoid being explicitly gay but still draw on shipping fandom to be successful. Coming off The Trainee, which was not a bl but did have expIicitly queer characters and romance subplots, I wasn't sure the intentions were quite that dark for PP, but having now finished it and seen the way some in the production have interacted with shipper fans, I have to call it: you were right to be concerned. At no point was this show ever a bl and none of its principal characters are canonically queer, but they successfully leveraged the TayNew ship to have fans interacting with it as if it was in fact a gay love story, that idea and fan commentary was explicitly encouraged by the creators, and the show has been quite successful despite never actually delivering on all the TayNew bait. I'm definitely concerned that we might have somehow swung back around to queerbaiting being seen as acceptable and good, as long as it features popular branded pairs. I don't have any bigger thoughts to offer about how this should be addressed, but just wanted to come back and say you were valid for naming that!

I know High Schoool Frenemy is being watched by like 5 people on tumblr. But it's doing well outside of tumblr. They are using bl style fanservice with the 2 main boys of that show. I have seen the shippy content and compilations along with the other bl couples. Not to mention people like Jojo saying those characters are the his new favorite ship on twitter.

I am glad you brought up TayNew because there is no doubt in my mind that they used TayNew for Peaceful Property as a test. They knew there could be backlash. They knew the bl fandom could have rioted. But they also knew that if it that rage would have been directed at TayNew not at the director, not the company but TAYNEW.

And I think TayNew knew this. Because they spend weeks on social media doing preintive damage control, I have seen the posts of them (or at least New) saying it wasn't going to be romantic. I don't think the two of them forgot how they were left to eat the shit alone over the bullshit backlash during the TayGun kiss situation with GMMTV doing fuck all for them.

And what pisses me off is that BL audience didn't even give a backlash. They eat that shit up like it was fucking icecream.

The BL audience is literally doing their job for them. They are taking a show with some gay subtext and running with it.

They are showing up for the fanservice (again broder audience outside of tumblr), and gleefully closing their eyes and ears and saying well I Think It's Gay.

What do you think Mega Corporation GMMTV is going to take from the success and no backlash? If the answear is anything but: We can produce half of the BLs as usual and make the rest Bromances, you have more faith in corporations then I do.

Because Bromances can be watched by non BL audiences as well. The BL niche is a big one, but it is still a niche.

And now they won't even have to bother inserting arguable quality gay commentary or struggles or homophobia. Or any gay kissing, no more workshops. No more worries about how effective these potential straight boys are going to be at playing gay. All they have to do is making them do fanservice, and they are great at training people for that. Or better yet, actually use one or two ships that have kissed before and done actual BLs.

Will they stop doing BL at all, obviously not, you gotta give the BL audience something to remind them they can still show boys kissing, and we have the Ex Morning and Jojo that will never actually stop making BLs and some gay shit. But if in the next line up we will more bromances, and eventually we get half BL and half bromances I wouldn't be surprised.

Of course maybe I am just pessimistic and cynical. Maybe the proto bdsm in the heart killers is enough to persuade people that I am totally wrong. I guess we will see about that.

I will personally be keeping with my own resolution and never watch another gmmtv show live ever again, maybe binge the few that sound interesting and that's it.

Literally you, the person reading this that has written fanfic and drawn comics and posted your essays. You are the people writing stories and sharing art and making tumblr posts. Each an every person on here, commenting on my post outraged that I like the collicteve works of yourself had had a hand in creating fanon just by existing in the fandom. You actually can find fanon from people of color. Many many different ways. From discord servers to tumblr to twitter and beyond. AO3 Is just an archive for writers. It is not the be all end all of fandom. But, while we are talking about AO3.

It is not a streaming service. It is not youtube. The works there are not paid for. They are made by you and me and a billion other people who only want to share their art. THEY ARE YOUR PEERS, NOT A CONGLOMERATE. This whole response makes it sound like you're all complaining about the fucking disney channel queerbaiting you again. If YOU want more Babs stories. Write them. You dont want racist tropes in your fanfiction? Well howdy do you've already proven you can both write and post to the internet just by responding to this post. Write. Create. Build. Also. As a side note. Im an indigenous trans person. I understand what it means to desperately want to see representation for me and to know that i will likely never be able to make it a reality in any canon works. I find that fanon is more likely to be written by people of color, disabled people and queer people than canon will ever be. Fandom is a bigger and more diverse collective than canon. Which makes me love it more. Because I can have my voice heard. Because you can have your voice heard.

Its new and its beautiful and its ever changing and its so, so much better than almost 100 years of writers having to sanitize themselves for the capitalist elite who need every batboy to look the same and cant let gay characters exist without making it tragic or retconning it every two seconds.

In the end all I can say is this

Fanon is beautiful.

Fanon has more for me than canon does. Likely, if you are not white, not straight, not cis or not able bodied, it also has more for you than canon ever will.

You all deserve to love your community too. If there are racists. Well fuck man, do what everyone else is doing by drowning them out with your own, obviously not problematic the sligtest, content. idek if I’d say the cape is an improvement, I think they were right not to include it because it doesn’t really add anything to the way he’s been portrayed.   He was used to Synth’s aggression. It was the only thing that Synth ever seemed to feel, he was either angry or just cold. Sometimes JB used to wonder if he was dead, but that was stupid. God, he was so young then. 

  Synth was all hard edges and tough love. He was the quintessential bad boy, but he was gentle. JB could feel him breaking, and guilt chipped away at him for causing it. 

  “I figured you guys would be better without me.”

Literally 90% of the issues with the moclan episodes stem from the fact that they never bothered to actually figure out how any of it worked in the begining.

Due to the shows starting roots of being a parody, they didnt super put in a lot of work into the actual worldbuilding until waaaay later. Moclans were just "haha what if there were klingons but they were all gay?". And then they never bothered to actually do any work on asking how that would actually develop and function.

Like why do moclans even have females? They obviously dont need them to reproduce, why wouldnt their evolution have completely bred them out by now? And moreover since they do exist, how does that tie in to moclan reproduction since females arent a nessecary part of it? How did the male biology evolve to accomodate birth, and for that matter the production and laying of eggs (another thing they did for a giggle without bothering to consider the implications biologically).

This offers even more questions when you remember the one fact OP didnt mention in this (which i dont blame them for because its barely focused on in the show either) But Klyden was also born female, much like their child topa. The whole reason Klyden freaks out about Topa being born female isnt just because hes a regressive conservative dicklord, but because he doesnt want topa to experience the shame he did of being born female. Which not only makes this messaging even more convoluted, but also begs the question of "how did he impregnate Bortus then?" And yea sure the answer could easily be that the whole species is actually intersex but thats literally never mentioned or even insinuated (likely because the writers know jack shit about it)

The whole problem is that the entire thing started as a poorly thought out joke that they then tried to turn into hamfisted serious reflection on current issues. Which they cant actually accurately do because they slapped it on the "what if being cis was illegal!" Joke Characters who fuck up the whole message because no one bothered to actually ask how any of this would actually work. And by the time it became actually relevant we were 3 seasons in.

At any point in the 3 seasons of run time they couldve taken the time to hash this out in a way that made more sense. Or they couldve just made up an entirely new race instead of constantly slapping all their "gender issues episodes" around moclan society. Literally any episode that has to do with sexuality or gender always revolves around moclus, despite every other socio-political issue they talk about having a whole new planet made around it.

For fucks sake they gave the "what if facebook ruled the world" planet TWO episodes!! They had a whole episode dedicated to Astrology Planet!

Just make another transphobic planet to clean up instead of stumbling over your season one joke characters!

I watched seasons 1 and 2 of The Orville a long time ago, and I’m now working my way through season 3. I just finished s3e5, “A Tale of Two Topas”. I know there’s more to come about it, but I’m just kinda venting up to that point.

I need some kind of “cis eye for the queer guy” to analyze clumsily written “ally” media- I’m far less concerned about what the showrunners tried to write, than I am about how it comes across on the screen to the "typical" cis audience. The storyline is treated with bewildering confidence in a way that doesn’t seem to realize how fucking weird its messaging is, and I feel like the fact that its so contradictory is something the show itself is trying to hide.

it’s very important to me how my therapist (attachment trauma specialist) who works with a lot of adoptees and ffy is also obsessed with supernatural. and agrees that jack is not adopted, and it’s important to his storyline that he isn’t. it’s so frustrating trying to explain to people that adoption isn’t about ‘what’s in their hearts’ or some other bullshit, because adoption isn’t about love, it’s a legal process that tfw don’t partake in. they never try to to erase his lineage or require it for there to be love. jack keeps his last name! jack has a picture of kelly at his bedside! jack gets the freedom to meet his first family, including lucifer! he gets to make his decisions about that even after he argues with cas about it! he is not adopted y’all just don’t know how else to describe their relationship because of the romanticization of adoption in ‘found family’ media and the fact that most non-adopted people have no idea what adoption actually is.
