tgcf book spoilers, but one mu qing and xie lian snippet that I think about a lot is this one, at the start of xie lian’s second banishment when he’s surprised to hear mu qing being described as generous and kind:

I think it just really goes to show 1) how deeply mq’s actions truly affected xl and what he thought of him, but also 2) just how different mq and xl are fundamentally in the way that they think and approach things.

I don’t have a lot of commentary on xl that hasn’t already been said, but bc we get the story from xl’s pov, we see a lot of mq’s actions being framed as selfish or suspicious (which is fair, bc again, we know how much his actions hurt xl), but we also see a lot of misconstrued kindness, like in book 8 where it’s revealed that he knocked out fx in order to save him. it’s also pretty obvious how much mq still cares abt xl, with how quickly he volunteers as fu yao and the lengths he goes to protect him when he deems hc a threat, so I also think it’s very likely that mq leaving the trio first was exactly what he said it was — that he thought becoming a junior official, ascending quickly, would be the best way to take care of not just his mother, but also xl, fx, the king and queen, and himself, and so in a way, him leaving was him acting on his kindness. but ofc it doesn’t work out, and he spends the next 800 years fighting w/ fx about it, defending himself, his decisions, and his kindness, and nitpicking the accuracies of his statues while he himself remains completely misunderstood by the two people he probably cares abt the most.

and idk, I guess I just think that’s probably a really lonely way to spend 800 years.

Finished this a while ago, wasn’t entirely satisfied with it so was hesitant to post anywhere… but I figure I shouldn’t let my effort go to waste.

Last winter, around the time that the AJ collection came out, I was gearing up to go to a Two Door Cinema concert by listening through their music. Lavender stuck with me, reminding me a bit of Apollo and Clay. So, since I almost never associate songs with characters, I knew I had to draw to it.

This is technically a partial redraw, as I had tried to make it when I first got the idea. It didn’t work out, and I came back to it again… I’m still honestly a bit irked with a few things, but I suppose that just means I’ll have to redraw it again sometime!

My personal headcanon is that Pony got his love for reading from Darry. When Darry was in high school he’d read the books he got in class out loud to Ponyboy and straight up just handed him some of the easier ones so they could talk about it later. In my brain the reason Ponyboy clings onto it so much is because it’s one of the things he and Darry REALLY bonded over when he was a kid and it just brings back good memories of when they got along better.

my grandmother lost 150+lbs on the keto diet (also after a gastric bypass or smthn like that) and she’s managed to maintain the same weight over the last decade, give or take ~30lbs… she’s always dieting somehow and i like to take it upon myself to always give her a chocolate or a treat or smthn when i visit. i support her with this but *one* thing will not hurt and it makes her happy!

Xelqua takes the Saints and the Watchers very seriously, they’re important to him, enough to where he’s named himself after Xelqua the Saint.

Before, if you asked him about family, he’d refer to the Watchers as such, Xelqua could be his dad for all he cares !

After living in Hermitcraft for awhile with Grian, these ideas start to become flimsy, as he gets attached to all the Hermits and this new way of life.

I imagine Xelqua having a good day, busy, but good ! He’s happy, he gets to see everyone and play, he has fresh clothes and plenty of snacks, he flies around on Grian’s back while they do errands.

It’s only when he and Grian get home and start to settle down that he gets upset.

Despite all the fun, Xelquas in full incomprehensible tears, blubbering as Grian tries to figure out why he’s upset suddenly—Grian tells him they’ll see everyone tomorrow, it’s okay, really !

When Xelqua finally gathers the courage, in between hiccups and sniffles, he tells Grian he doesn’t want to go back—he doesn’t want to go with the Watchers or even Xelqua, he wants to stay with Grian.

The Watchers have never threatened this, but in Xelqua’s head this is a huge belief he’s combating, he’s pushing aside everything he believes in and held so highly for Grian.

Grian reassures him, of course he doesn’t have to leave, he can stay as long as he wants, no hermit is going to abandon him.

Xelqua buries himself against Grian’s sweater and continues to cry, but it’s not as intense as it was earlier, more so soft sobs while Grian rubs his back until he calms down fully.
