Romanian Entrepreneurs Find Success in Jersey, Making Their Business Dreams a Reality

For many Romanians who have settled in Jersey, the island has become a place where dreams of starting businesses and achieving success have come true. The Romanian community has seen significant growth, with the latest census showing an increase of 875 people between 2011 and 2021, marking one of the most notable rises in community size during this period.

Among those who have built successful businesses are Florin Beclenas and Viorel Ungureanu, two entrepreneurs who have turned their aspirations into reality on the island. Both came to Jersey with hopes of a better future and have now achieved their goals through hard work and dedication.

Viorel Ungureanu arrived in Jersey in 2009 and, after years of honing his skills as a chef, purchased the Roseville Bistro in 2017. Initially, he came to the island for experience, but his journey quickly progressed as he climbed the ranks from an entry-level position to head chef. “I started from the bottom again, but soon became the head chef, just like I was in Romania,” said Mr. Ungureanu.

After the success of the bistro, he expanded his business by opening the Roseville Café in St. Helier, where he offers a variety of Romanian dishes, including the famous Mici (skinless sausages). "Having a family here and achieving my dream of owning a business in Jersey has been incredible," he added.

Similarly, Florin Beclenas, who moved to Jersey in 2009, has also turned his dream into a reality. Earlier this month, he opened The Wave restaurant in Harve des Pas. Having worked as a head chef for the past decade, Mr. Beclenas wanted to start his own family business. “It’s amazing here. I love the island, the food, and the people,” he shared.

With local support and a growing online presence, Mr. Beclenas is steadily growing his business. "Jersey has given us the opportunity to pursue our dreams, and we are grateful for the chance to own a business here," he said.

These entrepreneurs’ success stories are shining examples of how Jersey has become a fertile ground for ambitious individuals from Romania, giving them the support they need to flourish in their new home.

This painting was a visualisation of what I think it’s like to dream. My dreams are always disconnected and nonsensical, almost like watching scenes flicker from one to another. In a way, it reminds me of being a passenger on a train looking out the window as the view goes by.

We don’t really have control of where we go or what we dream, so we sit aboard the train each night and watch wherever it takes us. It’s in these few hours when we sleep and dream, that we seem to no longer be bound by the limits of the real world, but instead become passengers to our subconscious, riding along with the waves of our imagination.

My sister was coming home from college and then we went on a murder spree. I think we were trying to see how many people we could kill without our parents noticing during a road trip vacation. We ended up dying because Justin Bieber (young one) swerved the car and we drove off a bridge.
