Wild-flower [Astarion]

Chapter 1 - Little Flower

Summary: “Once upon a time, you would have led me to that crypt—and not some pretty clearing in the forest.” His brows knitted with guilt. The laugh lines she's grown to love fall into a frown. “For what it’s worth. I thank the gods every night that they didn’t let me have you.” - Jessamine’s too trusting. If wild, blind naivety was a race, she would win it. Astarion’s a close second, only because he can’t help but follow her. A/N This is the start of a multi-chaptered fluff fest I've been mapping out for quite some time. The next part will likely come within the next day or so. Masterlist

Despite the wine haze she’d found herself in, Jessamine’s certain of one thing. He’s watching her. 

She glances back at the door where he lingers, propped with his arms crossed at his chest. He doesn’t belong here; he's far too clean. Far too handsome. But he’d caught her eye when she came down from the upper dorms, and she likewise hadn’t left his sight since. 

So instead of heading out like she ought to, Jessamine instead settled in at the Flophouse bar, glass of wine in hand—which had been mead before she discovered how utterly foul it tasted. 

Jessamine’s on her third glass by the time the silver-haired man makes his move. “Very rare one stumbles upon a wood elf in the heart of Baldur’s Gate,” he announces. “You’re a long way from home, little flower.” 

His words barely register. Through Jessamine’s bleary eyes, she finds the man. An elf, like herself, though more moon-like than forest-coated. His skin is paler than hers, and his eyes, much darker. Her breath catches; she really ought to reply.

“How could you tell?”

The man grins. He takes to the barstool beside her, as though her question had been an invitation. “I can smell it on you. The earth, that honeyed sweetness…” His hand raises and strokes the air between them. “You wear it well, my dear.” 

Jessamine’s lips part; she was being hit on. 

It shouldn’t have come as such a surprise at her age. Yet, she wasn’t quite used to such direct attentions, either. Not without her sisters as buffers, or her father’s influence in the back of everyone’s minds. Something stirs inside of her.

“I— umm. I’m flattered,” she manages.

There’s a chuckle, and her gaze finds the bar.

Neither one of them speak for some time. Jessamine’s mind struggles to make sense of the nightly buzz: the bard tunes, the chatter, the clamour on the streets outside. It’s all a world away from the quiet birdsong she’d grown up with.

She feels the man’s breath on her neck. “So enlighten me…” he eventually says, “how did a creature as radiant as yourself end up in Fraygo’s Flophouse? Doesn’t your kind prefer frolicking about in a forest somewhere?”

The compliments seep right into Jessamine’s skin. He has her cornered. She’s acutely aware of their knees, ever-so-slightly touching, and his fingers, deftly circling his glass. In the span of a few minutes, he’d made her feel so nervous, so—inexperienced? 

Feeling his eyes on her, Jessamine musters every ounce of liquid courage to beckon him closer. And as he leans forward, she whispers through his hair, “It’s a secret.”

The man’s brow quirks. “Oh?” When she doesn’t elaborate, his eyes run over her, searching for any hint of a clue. By the time they return to her face, it’s burning. “I’m good with secrets,” he says back.  

Jessamine’s heart pounds. This is dangerous, she thinks. All alone, away from home—and she’s never had this much wine in one sitting. 

“Won’t you indulge me?” the man presses. “Let me guess, you've come seeking adventure... A scandalous affair, perhaps?” He pauses to gauge her reaction. "Or maybe, family disagreement?” 

Jessamine falters; he catches it immediately.

“Hmm, yes. How I relate to that! They made you feel stifled—trapped.” He takes a moment, fingertips ghosting over Jessamine’s flushed skin. “And what better place to seek freedom than the city proper. The one and only, Baldur’s Gate.”

Jessamine shudders.

“My, my, what a sweet thing you are.”

He edges closer. Jessamine loses herself in the contours of his face: his sharp jaw, sly smile, and the faint laugh lines bookending it. She barely notices when his thumb brushes against her ear, tucking fine wisps of hair behind it. 

The smallest of sighs escapes her. With not a single thought between her eyes, Jessamine leans into his touch. “Fresh as a daisy,” he whispers, “just waiting to be picked—” 

A damp rag slaps the bar between them; Jessamine jumps a mile.

“That’s enough of that, boy,” warns a man's voice. “I know your kind and the young miss ‘ere don’t deserve to be used by the likes of you.” 

Jessamine straightens in her seat. “Dashkent—” she sputters at the innkeep.

His expression is hard.

Despite his stature, Jessamine thinks the halfling is more intimidating than most men twice his size. And at this moment, there’s something fierce radiating from him.

Jessamine averts her eyes. She was undeserving of his worry. It was only by chance she'd been there to put out a fire in his storeroom a few days back. But since then, her lodgings had been free of charge, and she was no longer bothered by men in the dorms.

She barely knew him, yet as Dashkent looks down his nose at her companion, Jessamine's reminded of an overprotective uncle.

“Jessa,” he says, wringing out the rag in his hands, “keep yer wits about you with this one, a’right?” He shoots a look at the pale elf. “You’re too kind ‘a girl for someone like him.”

Harsh, Jessamine thinks. Yet a glance toward the man in question makes her second-guess herself.

Dashkent dismissed her before she has chance to think on it. “Off with ya now,” he says. “Go swig some water an’ get some rest, Jessa. Your next show’s tomorrow.”

Jessamine cringes at the reminder. She can only nod as the innkeep disappears into the back room. And with him gone, it becomes apparent. Whatever had been building between her and the other elf had been struck dead. She’s once again aware of her surroundings: the Flophouse and its drunkards (of which she's sorely included).  

Somehow, she almost feels as though she’s been trancing.  

A cough prompts Jessamine’s flight response. “I'm sorry about him,” she says; I should go, she thinks. But as she wobbles out of her stool, there’s a hand to steady her. 

“No need to run off, my sweet. I’m not scared away so easily.”

Something about the nickname stops Jessamine in her tracks. It disarms her enough that she doesn’t notice that she's being guided away from the bar. Her escort leads her to the Flophouse staircase, where she somehow finds courage to ask him his plans for the next day.

“If you've nothing to do, won’t you come to the Blushing Mermaid? I'll be performing there tomorrow night.” When he doesn't reply, Jessamine's heart quickens. “Only if you like—” she pauses.

She doesn’t even know his name.

“Astarion,” says the elf.

“Astarion,” she repeats. It's a pretty name, and it sounds pretty when she says it. “Tomorrow, then?” 

“Tomorrow,” he confirms, with a flash of teeth.

And Jessamine’s elated. 

They exchange goodnights, and promises to meet again. But as Jessamine returns to her lodgings with a new name on her tongue, it doesn’t register that she'd never given hers.

In-Law Headcanons

Eowyn and Denethor have a fractious relationship. They can barely be in each other's company for five minutes without getting into a snark fest, which makes their bi-weekly family dinners something of a trial. To outlookers, their relationship is strained and unloving. In truth, Denethor and Eowyn get a kick at having someone to snark at and let their sharp tongues loose on.

People express sympathy for Faramir but actually it suits him well, because it means they can direct that bluntness at each other and he doesn't have to get involved (unless he suspects one of them is going to say something they're going to regret). That Denethor actually approves of Eowyn, and they all act as buffers for each other, goes a long way to improving his and Denethor's relationship (especially as Eowyn is so quick to tell Denethor when she thinks he's not doing right by Faramir.)

By way of comparison, Faramir's relationship with Theoden never moves past polite civility. While the distance between them contributes to this, even when they spend extended periods of time together, any concern or loyalty Faramir feels towards Theoden is for Eowyn's sake, and for Eowyn's sake he can never really warm to Theoden.

When they're together, neither Theoden nor Eowyn can really help but slip back into old habits, which Faramir finds deeply frustrating, and it takes a fair deal of self-control for Faramir to supress his quiet but simmering rage at Theoden's instinctive expectation that Eowyn would just pick up where she left off and wait on him, and to gently divert the burden of service away from Eowyn (Eowyn's gratitude for this is unspoken but deeply felt.)

The main difference is that for all their squabbling, Eowyn and Denethor get each other. Both know what it is to crumble under the burden of having to be the one to keep everything together, both of them have had their deepest fears and insecurities used against them by a thing/person speaking with the voice of Sauron. Both of them have reached a moment when it seemed nothing was worse living for anymore, except to have a death that defied everything demanded of them in life.

Even Denethor's attempted murder-suicide with Faramir, Eowyn came to understand as being an act of love from someone who had just been pushed to the brink, and wanted to spare Faramir a "shameful" death at the hands of the enemy.

This is in now way how Eowyn feels about Denethor at the beginning of their relationship, at the beginning Eowyn outright despises Denethor for his treatment of Faramir, and Denethor's pride puts him at odds with her own, but over time, and after Denethor and Faramir's own relationship warms and Denethor himself heals from the ordeal he had been through, neither one can deny the similarities between themselves, and Denethor especially comes to love Eowyn, for loving Faramir so much, and giving him the affection and happiness Faramir deserves, (which even after healing, Denethor doubts he is capable of giving him.)

With Theoden and Faramir, however, Faramir just cannot understand Theoden at all. For years Theoden had had Eowyn in his house, raised her, knew her nearly all her life. He had been cared by her and tended by her since she was little more than a teenager, and his entire court respects her and holds her in high regard, yet he never seems to appreciate Eowyn as anything more than his "obedient little niece who (for the most part) does her uncle's bidding in respectful silence."

Sometimes Faramir just wants to take Theoden by the shoulders and shake him, and scream some sense into him (not that dissimilar to how Eowyn dealt with Denethor in early days, to be honest) but he knows Eowyn wouldn't thank him for that, especially as her uncle isn't around long enough for them to work through any arguments or fall outs, so he forces himself to be civil, but damn it, it requires a lot of force.

A less critical headcanon of Theoden is that he gets a similar speech from Gandalf that Eomer gets, and that combined with Eowyn's great deed on the Pelennor, it does wake him up a bit and knocks into his head what sort of person his niece is. He recognises his own faults as a "father figure" and can sense that Faramir recognises them as well and beneath his civil manner, judges him for it hard, and while their relationship doesn't begin on as sour a note as Denethor and Eowyn's, perhaps rather less so, they don't have enough in common, nor do they spend enough time together, for them to build up a rapport between them, and that sense of Faramir's judgement always lies between them, unspoken but felt nonetheless.

What do you think about adding a pink lens to make them even?

Hmm, I think it could fit. What about putting it after Crimson? To give a buffer between the absolute angst fest that is Crimson and the finality and everything of the Obsidian Lense. It could focus in on everyone's relationships and planning the wedding and working through relationship problems and communication. The ending of the Lense would be the wedding, allowing Obsidian to be more honeymoon phase and focus on the ending.

I think it could fit in perfectly, now that I think about it! Going from Crimson to Obsidian seems like it would pack too much theme into one Lense! Nice thinking!

Buffer Festival 2024

Amanda and Courtney hosted the Creator Screening on the first night. It was a good mix of good, weird, and fun videos (that disturbing dinner date anyone???)

I saw the TCB enter the venue before the screening even though they were not featured that night which was cool.

I got to meet both Court and Amanda. They were even more beautiful in person and very nice. They tried to really talk to everyone even though it's jam packed (the smallest red carpet I've seen lol) the lobby was just not built for things like that

Kiana and Ale were there as well

Second day was The Great Debate

Joey as the ever charming Host of the show

First round were the Canadians, second was the "World" aka the Americans. Third round was jeopardy style defending controversial comments before the final winner's debate.

The debate was fun, funny and chaotic. Loved Court's Princess Julie and Amanda's Face-Off interest. The final debate got derailed in the best way possible (They were all too nice to each other lol)

More Amanda and Joey duo please. They worked so well together.

I do have a 28 minute video but the bulk of it is the debate so I'm not sure about posting it since they filmed the whole thing

Also there was someone who asked Joey to film an apology video for Owen ruining their friend's life.

The second day was more concentrated fans of TCB, StarKid, and Smosh so I didn't get to meet the Courtmanda again (everyone wanted to meet them) but got to talk to Brian, Corey, and Joey. So it's still a win.

There was a gala later that night. Can't wait to see wait to see what they were wearing. Hopefully we get a post 🤞

All in all, it was a different experience that I had compared to when I went in 2013. 2013 Buffer Fest I felt was what I imagined VidCon was like in a smaller scale- they had a ton of YouTubers, multiple meet and greet lines, screenings and events all day long for 3 days, etc. 2024 Buffer fest was way smaller but it felt more personal and in an intimate setting. I'm just glad to be able to go back to it after a decade.

Last film: I'm realising I very rarely watch movies because I can't actually remember the last time I saw one, or what it was.

Currently reading: I was on a reading streak and got a few books into the Inheritance Cycle (re-read in preparation for reading Murtagh) but I kinda lost momentum towards the end of the fourth book. I'm also reading, and LOVING The Brightest Constellations of Our Souls by thecouchsofa and I'm excited to pick it back up again when my brain will focus. While my brain buffers I've been reading some shorter stuff (like The most beautiful part of me (is you) by galaxo, which was amazing) and listening to the audiobook of I kissed Shara Wheeler.

Currently watching: I’m re-watching Dr. Who and Torchwood at the moment.

Currently craving: Cough relief

Coffee or tea: Neither, I dislike the taste of both and also can't have caffeine if I want to stay sane.

Three ships: I'm having four because I can't leave one out in the cold. I absolutely adore the whole best friends to lovers thing, so Ronarry and Prongsfoot have my heart. But then I also adore enemies to lovers, forbidden romance and ships that shouldn't work but do and for that Drarry and Jegulus are my beloved.

First ship: Ronarry (I didn't even like Drarry for years, which is so weird to think back on)

Currently working on: Several things for the Prongsfoot bingo and my fic for the Strutting Slut Fest.

Progress update

The Cycle of Death: Working on a buffer. Chapters may start coming by the end of May/early June.

By The Riverbed, I give my Everything: Chapter 4 being written. Probably will be out before the month's end.

Mystery Story 1: Rough outline complete. Meant to replace Riverbed. Dramedy story making fun of some canon decisions and taking them seriously. Probably out by late June.

Mystery Story 2: Planning stages, kind of a collaborative effort, really. A true angst fest and with a plotline unlike anything I've ever written. No planned release yet.

This is a controversial very anti feminist opinion of mine, but it genuinely pisses me off lately when I see women disparage their own features online, for example in tiktoks and in tweets. It’s not that I don’t get how they have become insecure or what it feels like. I’m very familiar. But I feel tired of all the self degradation that’s just become the norm. I’m tired of people themselves feeding into it. I’m tired of them spreading their insecurities. Im tired of seeing girls and young women in the replies say “oh i didn’t know this was a bad feature.. now i’m self conscious too”. Spreading hate about yourself eventually hits people who look similar or share even just one similarity. And seeing these types of posts get 100k+ likes and everyone having a sob fest about how unfortunate and “ugly” they are, makes me nauseous atp. I used to feel bad but now I’m just fed up. And people do it irl too. Go to therapy, get a diary, do anything productive instead of constantly sucking the energy out of the room or online place you are. Your looks don’t make you an eyesore, your self pity does.

Regardless of how unpopular it may be received, I agree with you 100%.

I think what annoys me is both ends of this spectrum. You have the women who really do believe this, to which I suggest that a life of pursuits in things other than appearance heavy ones will greatly buffer this constant desire to look perfect and "presentable". I still have body issues myself, but I'm not nearly as deep in them as I was in high school when I had too much time on my hands to worry about things like that. I'm not saying "get a job then you'll see how much it doesn't matter!" but also...kinda?

But not just work. Hobbies. Socializing with friends (FRIENDS). These things engage your dopamine so much I PROMISE YOU how you look will take a backseat. Because I know exactly what videos you're talking about. I see them all the time and roll my eyes harder than I could possibly express in a gif.

But then you have the other end. Women who know what they're doing. Making up new insecurities that they themselves likely don't even really concern themselves with. Rather, they're complaint about only having "naturally half curled eyelashes" (idk if that's real i just made it up) is meant to prompt ass kissing comments that say "you think you have it bad..?" and "no! you're so gorgeous!". That is if they're not trying to sell some useless product to help you sate this newfound insecurity.

I'll be the first to defend and give the benefit of the doubt to women. But the ones who abuse this new climate of female empowerment piss me off to no end. I retain far more pity for teenage girls because that is a hard fucking time in terms of self image. But for grown women in those comments who, like you say, are like "now i have a new insecurity." I'm sorry, but if it was that easy? You were either looking for something new to add to your proud list of why you're "so ugly" or you are far too vulnerable to be using the internet for anything social media related.
