Ok not to get too emotional over PennyWaynes smut but ... Thomas WOULD have liked Alfred to scratch that desk. Not only for the reason specifically stated, but also as proof that Alfred was there. Alfred's job is maintaining the manor, and over the regular course of his job he would leave no trace, and there would be no memory of him after. Martha would have her gardens, and Thomas his office and no one would ever mention Alfred. It pisses off Thomas so much. Alfred is as important as Martha and no one will ever know. But if he just gets Alfred to make one permanent mark to the antique desk he'd be satisfied

You’re absolutely right though. Alfred yearns to be professional and leave no trace. Thomas and Martha view this as a subtle rejection of them, of what they can offer, because Alfred will not fully take what is being offered to him (a relationship, love, etc).

This was a common thread for my other Pennywaynes fics actually - this tension between what Alfred allows to happen casually, and what Martha and Thomas want long term. They want him with them! They want him to stop lying to himself and sweeping the evidence out of sight. There want proof that he’s theirs just as much as they’re his.

And yeah, if Alfred cleans up that room after and there’s not a trace he was even there — I could see why Thomas would want to drive him to the point of digging his nails into soft hardwood that will never, ever be replaced.
