This is FINE
---
There's more than one reason why he's known as the 'Demon Cop'
Look this is 100% self gratifying crack. Based on my own 100% genuine experience:
I have a large tattoo, across my chest, shoulder blades and back. So, I was fairly resigned to the fact I'd probably never get to go to a public bath whilst visiting my friend in Japan, fair enough. One day however, she says she'd found a bath that allowed tattoos, and not just tiny ones that could be hidden by a plaster. So I go, very excited, and end up round the back of an area with a lot of signs advertising SoapIands and LoveHoteIs. I explain in the shakiest Japanese to the lady manning the counter that I have a large tattoo and she waves me in nonplussed. Pretty much every man there is covered in tattoos. Whilst I was drying my hair, one of them tries to ask me something but my Japanese was no where near good enough to answer. When I get back my friend seemed a little worried and then confesses that she'd found out, after I'd left, that she'd sent me to a yakuza bathhouse.
I wish I was able to understand what that man was trying to say to me.
also, the bonus aftermath:

And this is how I choose to enter 2023

i love when people say you can't examine the jedi order's flaws or discuss them or ever portray them as bad because that would be misrepresenting buddhism and would be bad because thats a minority religion (in the west) as if real life buddism isnt as flawed as every single other religion in existence. people also forget two other important things: first that theres another religion that starts with a c the jedi are also partially based off of and secondly the reason the jedi has buddist influences in their worldbuilding is because of this pesky thing called orientalism that star wars happens to be full of to the brim. also the idea that examining the jedi critically 1:1 equals slandering its influences is such a example of the inability to distinguish fiction and in universe things from actual reality
youre defending a half assed orientalist idea of actual religion in its poorly executed fictional amalgamative form...why?

Quote
No need to try to overcome death.
You were just born by chance. There is no need to seek 'meaning' or 'value' in life. Life is like crossing a river in a boat called 'self'. It is only a tool for the duration of the crossing.
Tumblr media
'Self' is like a boat that we must tentatively use in order to exist in the world. As long as we are in this world, we must ride. That is the boat called "I". Even if you don’t want to, you cannot live without getting into that boat.
Many people believe that the boat itself is also valuable. However, the boat is valuable because it can cross the river, not because the 'boat itself' is valuable. If the tool is no longer useful, it is acceptable to throw it away. The boat is also disposable. If it is no longer worth it, it should not be at all regrettable to abandon the boat. So when you get across the river and life comes to an end, there is no need to be afraid or sad. You can quickly descend to the other side of the river without any unresolved feelings. It is said to be "an irreplaceable life", but in the end it's all in our own minds.
What is the greatest task in life is to die. The reason why it is such a big task is that no one knows what "death" is. If you know what death is, you can do something about it. But we don't know what the big task is at all, and as long as we are alive, there is no way of knowing.
The most popular image of death is that of going somewhere other than this world. The story goes that those who do good go to heaven and those who do bad are sent to hell. Because you are 'you' from birth, even after your body is gone, your 'you' continues somewhere other than here, and a transformed you remains. We all have that illusion.
The Buddha maintains an attitude of the “unanswerable questions” regarding the afterlife.'We don't know if there is an afterlife. We don't even know what will happen" is the only answer of Buddha. At this point, however, one thing is clear. There is no doubt that everything becomes meaningless there.
No need to worry. We can all 'die' without doing anything special. So you don't have to try to overcome death. Nor is there any need to seek 'meaning' or 'value' in the end of a life that was just born by chance.

reader back home because I feel like post journey reader should be shown off even just a moment least before she gets dragged back into that circle of hell.
Tumblr media
she represents each of her brothers plus whatever wukong was and her trip in their own ways.
yeah she gets a stareo typical dragon tattoo but it is the dragon form of Ao lie. her baby brother as she called him not pictured was she had him holding the monks staff carrying him as he travels.
she has an earring version of Wukongs staff she found it and thought it would be funny as hell even though she does have tattoos of clouds to represent the cloud he rides upon.
Do you see that? you see that goard? that's pigsy it's being held up by beads meant to represent every reason he's single.
yes, she has the translation earing still. and she never took it off it doesn't even work but she is fluent in Chinese now as well as English
again in Ao lies mouth there is the monk's staff
on her back she has a lotus feeling that because she went on the journey even if she didn't achieve enlightenment (something she didn't want anyway) she felt like carrying the wisdom she learned and as such it has actual quotes the monk told her that stuck with her and held meaning. the lotus again represents her friend's enlightenment not her own with their quotes as well.
want to know how she represents sandy? there's a tattoo of his weapon in Ao lies claws inscribed with a quote of his.
she pretty much only wears flats now she doesn't like other shoes she can't stand them nor restricting pants.
reader deeply cares for her brothers and would be genuinely surprised if she ever goes back and finds out they are still alive. tattoos are how she immortalized them for herself because they are family now to her and well she wasn't about to forget family.
can't forget the quotes of your traveling family if you tattoo them on yourself

The Quest for Buddhism (120)
Buddhist cosmology
Samatha-vippasana – Buddhist yoga
Samatha-vipassana is the main form of Buddhist meditation and yogic practice, yoga. In a broad sense, it is part of Zen.
Buddhist yoga practice is samatha-vippasana, in which samatha (stillness: Ref) and vippasana (insight: Ref2) take place simultaneously. The emphasis on observation as well as cessation is characteristic of Buddhist meditation methods. Cessation and contemplation are often compared to two wheels, which are inseparable. The diverse development of this technique of prayer and meditation, incorporating yogic contemplation (meditation), is a characteristic of Buddhism.
Buddhist yoga encompasses a variety of methods which aim to develop the 37 aids to awakening (Ref3). Its ultimate goal is bodhi (awakening) or nirvana (cessation), traditionally seen as the permanent end of suffering (dukkha) and rebirth. Buddhist texts use a number of terms for spiritual praxis in addition to yoga, such as bhavana ("development": Ref4) and jhana (dhyana: Ref5).
In early Buddhism, yoga practices included:
the rupa dhyanas (four meditations or mental absorptions: Ref6),
the four satipatthanas (foundations or establishments of mindfulness),
anapanasati (mindfulness of breath: Ref7),
the four immeasurable minds (supranormal states of mind),
the brahmaviharas (divine abodes: Ref8).
Anussati (contemplations, recollections)
*Note: the four satipatthanas are the most central and most important contemplation for attaining enlightenment since the time of the Buddha's early Buddhism, and the core contemplative practice of the main Buddhist meditation of samatha-vipassana.
These meditations were seen as supported by the other elements of the Noble Eightfold Path (Ref9), such as ethics, right exertion, sense restraint and right view. Two mental qualities are said to be indispensable for yoga practice in Buddhism: samatha (calm, stability) and vipassanā (insight, clear seeing). Samatha is a stable, relaxed mind, associated with samadhi (mental unification, focus) and dhyana (a state of meditative absorption). Vipassana is insight or penetrative understanding into the true nature of phenomena, also defined as "seeing things as they truly are" (yathābhūtaṃ darśanam). A unique feature of classical Buddhism is its understanding of all phenomena (dhamma) as being empty of a self (Pali: anatta Skt: anatman, literally "non-self").

I was reading The Monkey King's Daughter (you can read the whole book for an hour) and apparently the protagonist is also Guanyin's grandchild? Can Guanyin be shipped?
I mean I can’t say like what are like the moral implications of shipping GuanYin itself cause that is so not my place but I’m still going to answer this cause it kinda of interesting when it comes to modern media. First off saying that like I have never really seen romance done with GuanYin. At least in a serious way. But if I had to take a guess it can be seen as 'possible' as much as like shipping anyone in Chinese mythos, in that isn't really taken seriously at all. In a lot of modern fan spaces there are a variety of crack ships for more humorous or hypothetical situations like I have seen literally the Star of Venus shipped with Jade Emperor just cause. But I don't see much with buddhas or bodhisattvas in either post-modern media nor in fan spaces. At least that isn't Wukong or Sanzang since they are both Buddhas. And I have done a whole thing about how Wukong for decades wasn’t seen as a romantic figure until like there was a huge character reconstruction, but that isn’t usually the case for most characters.
I would say that the most mainstream instance I can think off the top of my head is The Lost Empire (2001) where it had the main character has a romantic plot with Gaunyin herself. Of course, that wasn't really a masterpiece within itself but this was considered like a 'bad choice' more so that it was just a very strange and awkward romance at that.
Tumblr media
Funny enough I think I see more romantic for humor's sake on Guanyin in comic books or games as likes gags at most. Like in Westward comics (later a tv series) Guanyin has a celestial-turned-demon trying to pursue him that he always rejects. Another is more play for laughs but Guanyin in the Fei Ren Zai where people just don't know it's Guanyin and think she is so attractive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've seen some games that have Guanyin as like a pretty boy/girl but otherwise nothing even close to a romance plot. Those are more just for like aesthetics of making every character look overly attractive to sell it.
The best I can say is that is just kinda strange and a little strange personally but I can't say that it can be taken seriously. I mean Wukong is supposed to be a Buddha by the end of the novel, so if The Monkey King's Daughter has it that a buddha can have a daughter then there wouldn't be anything stopping the author from having a bodhisattva having kids.
#anon ask#anonymous#anon#ask#sun wukong#monkey king#guanyin#chinese mythos#monkey king's daughter#Wukong is pretty self contained within Xiyouji himself so asking for a little bit of suspension of disbelief can be understood#but Gaunyin has a much longer history that is far more embedded with Buddhist mythology#She isn’t just a character in Xiyouji#and it would be limiting to her just to make it so#but I do think that might be the case in some media when it comes to portraying Gaunyin#esp since most modern interpretations of Guanyin are from xiyouji material just cause the sheer amount of xiyouji content there is#I rarely see Guanyin stand alone moves/shows and there are some trust me but most of her portrayals are within xiyouji spaces#there is a lot of conversation about xiyouji either being a reconstruction or a deconstruction of religion#and while the book is SATURATED in allegorical meaning whether in taoism buddhism or chinese lore it is also seen as satire of religion#people can take xiyouji as pointing out the flaws in humanity but also the flaws of heaven as well as it humanizes both gods and buddhas#this kinda of humanization can be seen as disrespectful to a certain extent but it is what makes these figures more engaging as characters#from a writing standpoint at least#this is me just rambling now about the interesting dycotomy that xiyouji has and has had with religion and how that can be see as today#to a certain extent a lot of directors take xiyouji plots as also their own way to show the heavens in their own way to convey satire#or humor as well depending on what their direction is aiming for#Some even go so far to make that heaven is just straight up the bad guy and that includes buddha as well which is a FAR more wild take than#just having romance in the heavens#But xiyouji does have it that we see these mythological figures have flaws#that heaven can lie or trick or they can take bribes and its up to the audience to interpretation as either satire or if it is critiquing#perhaps religion itself or rather the religious institutions since we do see both daoist and buddist monks as antagonists in the book#this as nothing to do with the ask at this point but i just wanna say my thoughts
