Start helping with citizen science projects

What's a citizen science project? Basically, it's crowdsourced science. In this case, crowdsourced climate science, that you can help with!

You don't need qualifications or any training besides the slideshow at the start of a project. There are a lot of things that humans can do way better than machines can, even with only minimal training, that are vital to science - especially digitizing records and building searchable databases

Like labeling trees in aerial photos so that scientists have better datasets to use for restoration.

Or counting cells in fossilized plants to track the impacts of climate change.

Or digitizing old atmospheric data to help scientists track the warming effects of El Niño.

Or counting penguins to help scientists better protect them.

Those are all on one of the most prominent citizen science platforms, called Zooniverse, but there are a ton of others, too.

Oh, and btw, you don't have to worry about messing up, because several people see each image. Studies show that if you pool the opinions of however many regular people (different by field), it matches the accuracy rate of a trained scientist in the field.

I spent a lot of time doing this when I was really badly injured and housebound, and it was so good for me to be able to HELP and DO SOMETHING, even when I was in too much pain to leave my bed. So if you are chronically ill/disabled/for whatever reason can't participate or volunteer for things in person, I highly highly recommend.

use vetted sites on r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH for free movies, books, games, etc.

use trakt or letterboxd instead of imdb.

use storygraph instead of goodreads.

use darkpatterns to find mobile game with no ads or microtransactions

use ground news to read unbiased news and find blind spots in news stories.

use mediahuman or cobalt to download music, or support your favorite artists directly through bandcamp

make youtube bearable by using mtube, newpipe, or the unhook extension on chrome, firefox, or microsoft edge

use search for a cause or ecosia to support the environment instead of google

use thriftbooks to buy new or used books (they also have manga, textbooks, home goods, CDs, DVDs, and blurays)

use flashpoint to play archived online flash games

find books, movies, games, etc. on the internet archive! for starters, here's a bunch of David Attenborough documentaries and all of the Animorphs books

burn your music onto cds

use pdf24 (available online or as a desktop app) instead of adobe

use unroll.me to clean your email inboxes

use thunderbird, mailfence, countermail, edison mail, tuta, or proton mail instead of gmail

remove bloatware on windows PC, macOS, and iOS X

remove bloatware on samsung X

use pixelfed instead of instagram or meta

use NCH suite for free software like a file converter, image editor, video editors, pdf editor, etc.

Am I normal for being horrified at the idea of places of worship and historic buildings being bombed? What are we even doing?

I don't mind being wrong or being corrected, but I'm always so worried that people will assume I have ill intentions when I word something incorrectly or spell something wrong in a way that accidentally makes a post look inappropriate. Tumblr is so weird about interactions and nuance, and approaching people about something they might be concerned about. I never know if people will show grace when it comes to these sorts of things.

How to NOT tag your post if you're trying to provide a trigger warning using "grapefruit" as an example:

This makes it impossible to filter out this word because it's been misspelled. Nobody is going to think to filter out those misspellings until they've come across that triggering content. And even if they filter out one or two of these words, there are still more variations of misspellings out there that they hadn't thought to put on their list.

This makes me think it's being done maliciously, to purposely trigger people.

When you tag your posts with trigger warnings, tag them with the full word. Your tags should look like this:

whenever people try to say palestine doesn't have lgbt rights as some kind of gotcha it's crazy because like 3/4 of the people using this as a gotcha don't like lgbt people either. like if the implication is that palestinians deserve to die for not being broadly supportive of lgbt people but you don't support lgbt either then aren't you implying that you should also die for it

Politics and the news are giving her some extremely justified anxiety and as a trans woman of color she feels the need to stop being patient and rush through the last part of her transition before she loses all access to it being possible.
