Sometimes the delulu IS the solulu.
After some thought, and reading a lot of really insightful thoughts here and on Discord, I think I've reached a conclusion.
I'm going full tinhat. Not in an unhinged way, though.
I don't think this is the end.
I'm not going to count on it. I'm barely going to hope for it. But I am going to...keep an eye out for it.
The one common refrain we've heard from each other is that this did not feel like a permanent breakup. It felt so obviously and blatantly like a setup for Buck to fight for the relationship. It was that "one partner freaks out a bit and the other has to show their commitment" relationship hurdle which is so common it's a trope. In fact, most of us assumed that's just what it was...until those interviews
Now, I do not put Tim Minear up on some kind of pedestal of writerly greatness - far from it. And he did not write this episode, but the plotlines all go through him.
BUT.
He has always been very attached to Tommy as a character and to this relationship. He loves it. He loved red string theory so much that he wrote it into this episode. And I'm about halfway convinced he's in love with Lou but that's beside the point. (I mean, we get it, Tim.)
Tommy's what he always said he wanted to get for Buck. Firefighter, integrated into the 118, yadda yadda, we've been over this a lot. Someone he chooses, someone he works to build something with. Someone who shows up for him. He had Buck SAY in this episode that he'd never felt like this since Abby.
The thread of Tommy wanting a found family like Buck's. The intense settled/caregiving vibe of 8x05. It all felt so...purposeful. And yes, I agree that this could have been done just to punch up the angst for Buck when it ends. But that's not the only explanation.
The many, many comments of wanting to move Buck along in his personal life. Oliver wanting to do settled, domestic storylines with him. Giving Tommy the big hero romcom entrance in that hospital.
And what now? Cycle Buck through another love interest? It's hard to imagine recapturing what he had with Tommy with anybody else, or for the GA to embrace it as much as they did. What little we can see of the GA reaction (because the official socials are weirdly quiet and have not posted) is that they're not happy about this. Tim knows this.
I can buy Tim making some dumb writing decisions but he's not stupid. I find it very hard to swallow that he'd voluntarily toss away all this, and this potential, and what they'd already established, and a pairing/character/actor he loves, for what? For nothing.
So I think that it's not for nothing.
I think the plan IS to reunite them...
...they just don't know when, or how.
For some reason he wants to give it a break for awhile. I don't know why. There could be off-camera reasons. But I think it happened recently. Two weeks ago we got interviews talking about hurdles being overcome, relationships deepening, etc etc. It's a great episode for them, came out of Oliver's mouth. Not important, not consequential - great. And hey, what happened to that very important Bobby conversation where he gave Buck important advice? It wasn't there.
I think a change was made in the last two weeks. And yes, I know the loft stills were dated 9/17.
Two weeks is plenty of time to reshoot one scene, between when those interviews came out and last night. The stills could be from the first time it was shot, in September. Put the guys in the same wardrobe, we'd never know the difference, or that those stills weren't from the scene we actually saw.
OR
The scene was always the one we saw, but was always meant to be temporary, and the change was in how they talked about it in the interviews from last night. That is a simpler explanation, as it doesn't involve reshoots, but it doesn't explain those very incongruous interviews we got two weeks ago that do not match the scene we saw. Now, they have always vagued it up, and talked around things in interviews, but this was an entirely new level of misdirection and outright lying that isn't typical.
I'm really tinhatting it up now, but hey, what have I got to lose? I'm not investing anything in this. It's just...a thought.
If you think the network interfered (I don't, at least not for plot-related reasons, see below) or Oliver demanded the relationship be cut (I don't - I know lots of you are mad at him but I'm not), whatever it was...I just get a vibe. It could be as simple as money. It could be a ratings thing. Honestly? It could be that they've found out they're getting cancelled, and were ordered to cut bait on guest stars. They could be kicking the can down the road to goose ratings for spring when they do bring it back. There are lots of reasons I can think of and probably more that I can't.
I read a thoughtful and reasonable post about how it was more or less a mercy killing to post those interviews - most showrunners like to keep viewers guessing and coming back, so for them to say definitely BT was dead meant it's really, really dead (although how definitive they actually were is another question).
They might be right about that. I don't know.
Or they just might not know themselves. Even if the plan IS to reunite them eventually - if they don't have a plan for how or when, the safest course is to shut it down. No guarantees they can make it work, so play it safe. Oliver and Lou might not be looped in on this.
It's pretty thin. They probably would be, although we have ample evidence of actors not knowing stuff until the last minute. The other option is that they are looped in and are intentionally lying but I think that's very unlikely - although Lou has demonstrated a keen skill in keeping his mouth shut when necessary.
I'm not going to get nuts about this and neither should anybody else. I'm not going to be scouring socials or the internet looking for support or clues. I'm not going to be holding my breath waiting for a sign.
The only thing I'll keep an eye on is how they handle any flirtation or dating Buck does in the near future. How they handle it might be telling.
This is ALL very unlikely, let's be real.
I'm still tinhatting, though. Why not? What have we got to lose?
But if I'm right, I expect that red dodgeball in my inbox toot sweet.
(And Buddie still isn't going canon, btw.)

I think the bucktommy date happens at the end of the episode.
Because the whole day, Buck has been doing his best to support his friends and family through crisis after crisis, being someone they can lean on. So when he and Tommy finally have a quiet moment alone at the end of the day, Buck is still a little stressed about everything and voices his worries aloud.
Tommy listens patiently and lets Buck get it all out, his shoulders slowly starting to relax. Buck says he feels a bit better and apologizes for dumping all that on him. But Tommy calmly tells Buck that it's okay to lean on him, reminding him that he cares about him and that he doesn't need to handle everything alone.
Tumblr media
And that's when we see Buck giving that soft, smitten smile. Because Buck always does his best to take care of everyone, and Tommy has proven time and time again that he wants to be the one who takes care of him.

My season 8 predictions:
Madney new baby (i explain my point here)
Bucktommy new important dating stage (I love you at the very least. Possible moving in together)
Bucktommy angst: More likely helicopter crush for Tommy, but in second part of the season. Tommy's past, especially his past with Gerass will lead to some angst too I'm sure
More Tommy backstory
Eddie and the therapy arc back ofc. Finally moving on from Shannon in romantic way
Henren winning over Ortiz in the middle season finale and taking Mara back
Bathena new house in the first part of the season
Chris back somewhere around episode 5 because he still needs to attend school. He can't be in Texas longer than his holidays allowed

seeing posts going "oh but they're obviously setting up bddie! just look at x, y, z! it's basic media analysis," and listen, some of you have gotta accept that tim minear et al are maybe not looking at this show through the same lens as your average tumblr user.
which isn't a bad thing, death of the author etc etc. but in this case the author is still very much alive and very much still writing the story. you can take whatever meaning you want from whatever that ends up being but there is a world of difference between "this could mean this" and "this will mean this".

WHY are BT shippers so vehemently against actually analyzing the symbolism and choices made for this show?
i mean i saw multiple people saying we were overthinking the vertigo poster. they were saying that it was weird to assume that Buck would fill the pining best friend role that Midge did in the original movie??? (haven’t seen the movie, i just read a few synopses)
i’m sorry, so you agree that he put Ryan Guzman in the main character and Devin Kelley as the love interest because they’ll fill those roles in the storyline, but we’re overthinking when we point out what role he put Oliver Stark in?
or when i bring up the possible symbolism of Tommy always calling him Evan, the only response i get from BT stans is “well he would tell him if he didn’t like it” or “i think it’s because he was introduced that way and that’s why” or even “i think he probably likes that Tommy calls him Evan” (all real responses i saw) and it’s like, yeah that’s cool, those are great headcanons for you, but that actually isn’t what i was talking about. nothing wrong with having a headcanon, but it doesn’t explain anything about the show or answer any of my questions.
i mean in s4 he corrected his PARENTS and told them his name was Buck, and in s6 it was used to emphasize the strangeness of his coma dream, how everyone was calling him Evan, the whole show him being called Evan has almost always been used to emphasize that someone doesn’t know him very well, how are y’all convinced that it’ll mean something different this time? i get that some people think it’s supposed to be growth, that he’s cool with being called his first name, but if that’s the goal it definitely isn’t reading that way to me.
like i wish i could see things through the same lens as these people so it could make sense to me, i just don’t get how you can willfully ignore SO many hints just so you can ship what you want.
no hate to the ship or the shippers obviously, i’m just baffled by the lengths they’ll go to in order to convince themselves that plot device man is endgame for Buck.

i've been sitting on this for a while but my current theory is that lou/tommy's going to be in 6-10 episodes this season. i've always likened him to being similar to other longterm love interests, karen and taylor specifically, and those love interests seem to feature in about a third of the episodes per season (unless it's a truncated season, in which case they feature in a little over a half of the eps):
season one, karen was in 4/10 episodes
season two, karen was in 6/18 episodes and taylor was in 2/18
season three, karen was in 10/18 episodes.
season four, karen was in 6/14 episodes and taylor was in 4/14
season five, karen was in 7/18 episodes and taylor was in 13/18
season six, karen was in 6/18 episodes and taylor was 1/18 (but she was no longer a love interest at that time
season seven, karen was in 6/10 episodes
season five was obviously the outlier, as taylor was around for almost all the eps. but 6-10 feels like the safe number of eps we can anticipate, with six being on the low, average end and ten being on the high end. obligatory disclaimer: i don't know anything, and this is just speculation on my part. all of it will come down to their/his contractual agreement(s) either way. but i trust numbers and this is where i personally would place my bets

Just realised that it defo seems like the ep Chad Lowe is directing in 806. He’s only done 2 other 9-1-1 eps but both were Buck focused and ofc one was 704, so I’m very excited!

i'm curious about something, since the chances of buck and tommy breaking up are pretty high this season and likely a combination of situations regarding eddie and gerard are you going to stop watching if tommy leaves by the end of the season or will you continue even after buck and tommy break up? or are you one of those people that think buck and tommy breaking up is an inevitability and are just enjoying bi bucks journey even after tommy is finished playing his role in bucks bi journey?
I think people would spare themselves a lot of heartache and headaches if they stopped pretending like they know what’s going to happen. Stop chasing your own misery and just enjoy the show folks.
