John Paul Evans At Home with Otherness

The work of John Paul Evans grows from the artist’s personal experiences of being cast as ‘other’. This otherness arises not only from his sexuality but from the twenty-seven-year age difference between him and his life partner, Peter. The images have an autobiographic genesis, and all involve the photographer himself as the central actor, often appearing alongside Peter. However, this is not a documentary about his life as it is actually unfolding. Each image is a consciously constructed, an allegory asking us to look beyond the specific to the larger ideas that stand behind individual experience. Inside this Englishman’s castle, we discover an alternative artistic heritage of otherness.

Rosy Martin The Genesis of Re-Enactment Phototherapy

Rosy Martin is a British artist and activist who, in collaboration with fellow artist Jo Spence, developed a potent form of psychological therapy centred on photography. The genesis of re-enactment phototherapy lay in a form of non-directive peer-to-peer counselling the essence of which lies in the trust and mutual support. Within this safe environment, the photographic sessions are not about capturing the moment but encouraging it to take place.

Following the premature death of Jo Spence, Rosy Martin continued to develop the methodology of phototherapy. Reaching outwards, she expanded the process to include more formalised counsellor–client relationships and group workshopping sessions. Meanwhile, looking inwards, she applied what she had learned to her own artmaking. Working alone or in collaboration with others, she addressed issues of grieving and aging in imagery that is by turns poignantly understated, playfully contrary, and fiercely critical.
