Bowie had planned to release an album/musical based on #georgeorwell’s #1984 #georgeorwell1984 but the Orwell estate wouldn’t give him permission, so this album is loosely based on Bowie’s own concept of a dystopian future. The only remnant of the #spidersfromMars period on this #album is @mikegarson. Bowie played all guitars, working on his own guitar playing for some months so he would be up to it, with the exception of a solo by Alan Parker. In the studios, David was known for being practical, efficient and decided. He didn't take long to record his songs, given the the fact that he did most of them in only one or two takes, which is something extremely rare among musicians. "I co-produced four albums with David and I would say that 95 percent of the vocals that we did were first takes, from beginning to end. I would get the level, take the tape back, we'd go through, and that's the vocal you hear. They're not perfect, they're sometimes slightly out of tune, sometimes slightly out of time, but they're real. They are emotional from him. [...] I played, there at the ending of 'Five Years,' which had a whole bunch of people almost in tears, which David was in tears at the end of 'Five Years.' He's screaming, he is feeling such emotion. It wouldn't be allowed today. It would have to be auto-tuned. It would have to be moved around. But I think that's one of the reasons that we're still talking about these albums after all this time is they're real, they're human, and they reach you here more than they do up here. Album Number One Hundred Twenty Five “Diamond Dogs” is the eighth studio album by David Bowie, released on 24 May 1974 by RCA Records. Bowie produced the album and recorded it in early 1974 at Olympic and Island Studios in London and Ludolph Studios in the Netherlands, following the disbanding of his backing band the #spidersfrommars and the departure of producer #kenscott . The absence of #mickronson led Bowie to play guitar on the record. The album featured the return of #tonyvisconti who had not worked with #davidbowie for four years; the two would collaborate for the rest of the decade. Musically, it was Bowie's final album in the glam rock genre, though some songs were influenced by funk and soul music, which Bowie embraced on his next album, Young Americans (1975). My copy is a rerelease on #rcarecords - AYL1-3889; and not a gatefold, at that) Preceded by the lead single "Rebel Rebel", #diamonddogs was a commercial success, peaking at number one in the UK and number five in the US.
