Plant of the Day
Monday 2 December 2019
The seed heads of the British native Origanum vulgare (oregano, wild marjoram) seem to create a steely-grey foam over this dry meadow planting. This woody-based perennial is a drought-tolerant plant and has been combined with species from steppes, prairies and grassy plains around the world. Many of the plants were established from a seed mix which was directly sown in-situ over a base layer of free-draining sand.

Today’s #oneadayplant is Prunus spinosa (Sloe). I previously posted this plant when in flower in early spring. . We focus our attention on this species a great deal more in October/December, than we do at other times, when gathering Sloes to make Sloe Gin (@mrjinksy makes a particularly fine bottle!). We don’t really value them highly enough for their ornamental value. Masses of flower, robust, compact running shrubs or small trees, they make an excellent wildlife hedge as a boundary to a garden. Fruits are very tart. So don’t eat brilliantly, though they can be used in cooking post gin flavouring. Roast Pork was my best recent advice from Gareth Manning. . Tough as nails to grow, few plants can edge a field more effectively as a deterrent for large animals (inc. humans) from passing through. On the East Coast of Scotland (where I’m from), it occurs often as a lower coastal shrub meshing tightly as gorse does, keeping poor souls bound together. . Prunus insititia (Damson) tends to be the taller species (more tree-like) that you see as well in the same hedgerows that Sloe appears so regularly in. . A really good British Native Plant with lots to offer. . #plants #flower #white #flowers #spring #autumn #fruits #sloegin #alcohol #shrub #tree #hedgerow #foraging #freefood #iplantsman #garden #landscape #britishnative #uk #wildlife #nativeflora #gardening #plantingdesign #jardin #fruites (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFCPQJ3gXEx/?igshid=7fgeid77qjaa

Hey, do you remember last Christmas when a certain Mycroft Holmes selflessly and sweetly gave Bedelia a very fine pair of gloves and she abused her newfound power to throw a snowball at him?! Well. - twiddles thumbs as two masked agents break into her house to fill her entire swimming pool with snow as a festive greeting from the Iceman -

Pinching the bridge of her nose with slim fingers, Bedelia sighs before heading to the kitchen where she picks up her phone. This isn’t how she intended to find her swimming pool after a particularly exhausting day pretending to care about people she hasn’t seen for ten years and she intends to make sure her friend knows exactly how she feels about his “little” joke. Of course he doesn’t answer, probably enjoying the view of her annoyed face, but a voice message will do for now.   ❝ Edmund Mycroft Charles Holmes, you have five minutes to get your royal behind here or I’ll make sure the security of the country is the least of your concerns. ❞

It isn’t as if everything hurt, but it sure felt like they would if he dares move an inch. How many times had it been now, four? Five? Why couldn’t they just knock him out with one blow to the temple? Or to the carotid artery? Or even the solar plexus---
        “M’crof’?”
A mumble as he finally realizes who’s been buzzing in his ears, eyes blinking rapidly for focus, muscles relaxing just a tad. Just because it’s Mycroft instead of Sherlock, doesn’t mean he’s not prepared to punch him. Why is it Mycroft Holmes anyway? That eccentric man doesn’t do legwork; unless he’s the one who did this to him. Likely? John does hold a secret on him, in some sense, simply by being best friends with his brother. He let out a moment of unintelligible words, before finally managing to form them articulately, despite the simplest of questions:
        “Wh’ the hell?”

“See, that’s the funny thing about people. You think you know everything about somebody, and then -...” An i n n o c e n t shrug of his shoulders as he contemplates the cigarette he’s holding. Snuffs it out as he drops it on the ground and crushes it with the heel of his shoe. Eyes flash towards the man, tilting his head to the side.
Tumblr media
“Dig a little too deep, go somewhere that someone tells you n o t to go...” Lets out a quiet chuckle, looking at Mycroft almost as if he were appraising the other. “Tsk tsk. Someone’s been a naughty boy.”

The laugh he gives is as bleak as his gaze, a humourless and altogether inappropriately desolate sound to utter in the face of undeserved consolation. “ That, I fear, is a question of perspective. ”
The reddish discoloration that has draped itself copiously across Mycroft’s sclerae offers a treacherous insight into the most uncharacteristic break-down from which he has barely recovered, hands still disappointingly tremulous even after several minutes of self-calming introspection. He has never intended for her to see him in a state of such utter upheaval. Another addition to his abundant list of strategic failure.
“ My mistakes came at the cost of human lives. The lives of innocents. Civilians. I believe it is fairly obvious even to an onlooker emphatically blinded by bias that the responsibility of paying the price should have been mine. ”
           Quite the innocent statement, per se, the demand for accountability, and delivered in a delicately emotionless tone, at that - but beneath lies a greater urge, one that will remain adamantly unspoken until common sense and the unfolding of everyday routine will drown it with familiar reliability. { I wish it had been me. }
Mycroft had a way with words, using them to create a picture, to deflect, and use to his advantage. Hiding things he was saying with other meanings, and deflection. He would have made one hell of a poet, or politician Wendy often thought to herself but this was different. There was something spoken underneath that he didn’t hide so much with her this time.
i wish it had been me. and the words cut through her like a sword.
“Now you listen to me Mycroft Holmes.” grabbing is hands regardless of the man’s usual propensity for distance. This was motherly instinct, a mother comforting her son, a sister comforting her brother, a friend comforting her friend.
“What you do? Well, actually I don’t actually know what it is you do but I can make my own deductions that it is a job that requires so much of one person, and little to no thanks. You place the weight of the world on your shoulders, and you don’t let anyone close enough to help you share that weight. Maybe because you’re afraid of letting someone in to see the damage, maybe because you’re afraid that what they see will cause them to run. But you of all people cannot put this on yourself.”
“People die every day, it’s what they do. Good innocent people die. And yes, you’re decision cost the lives of civilians, and yes that is a grief and burden that you alone will bear but tell me something. Is anyone in the wide world capable of doing what it is you do? Day in and day out you alone make decisions that shape this world and how it is going to be. Can anyone do that as well as you? I doubt it. Because you care, hide it all you want but you care and love deeply. You and Sherlock are the same in that regard no matter how much you try and hide it.”
“Yes, you’re decision cost the lives of civilians but given the information you had and the choice you had to make can you honestly sit here and say you wouldn’t make the same decision again. Myc........ you may have to shoulder the burden alone, but you don’t have to bear the damage alone.”
