The seed heads of the British native Origanum vulgare (oregano, wild marjoram) seem to create a steely-grey foam over this dry meadow planting. This woody-based perennial is a drought-tolerant plant and has been combined with species from steppes, prairies and grassy plains around the world. Many of the plants were established from a seed mix which was directly sown in-situ over a base layer of free-draining sand.

     Pinching the bridge of her nose with slim fingers, Bedelia sighs before heading to the kitchen where she picks up her phone. This isn’t how she intended to find her swimming pool after a particularly exhausting day pretending to care about people she hasn’t seen for ten years and she intends to make sure her friend knows exactly how she feels about his “little” joke. If he had the energy, he would swat Mycroft’s hand away, tell him to stop fussing and say another kind of remark to convey his annoyance. As it is, he just lays on the bed and lets Mycroft take care of him. “Sedate me.. there must be something you can give me...” Sherlock scrunches up his face then, his breathing shallow as he fights against the sudden bout of nausea. Right now, in this state, he wouldn’t even mind to overdose just to end his suffering. 

But then he remembers something, or rather, someone. “D--does John know?” then again, if he was aware, surely the Doctor would be here at his side, wouldn’t he?

Today’s #oneadayplant is Prunus spinosa (Sloe). I previously posted this plant when in flower in early spring. . We focus our attention on this species a great deal more in October/December, than we do at other times, when gathering Sloes to make Sloe Gin (@mrjinksy makes a particularly fine bottle!). We don’t really value them highly enough for their ornamental value. Masses of flower, robust, compact running shrubs or small trees, they make an excellent wildlife hedge as a boundary to a garden. Fruits are very tart. So don’t eat brilliantly, though they can be used in cooking post gin flavouring. Roast Pork was my best recent advice from Gareth Manning. . Tough as nails to grow, few plants can edge a field more effectively as a deterrent for large animals (inc. humans) from passing through. On the East Coast of Scotland (where I’m from), it occurs often as a lower coastal shrub meshing tightly as gorse does, keeping poor souls bound together. . Prunus insititia (Damson) tends to be the taller species (more tree-like) that you see as well in the same hedgerows that Sloe appears so regularly in. . John does hold a secret on him, in some sense, simply by being best friends with his brother. He let out a moment of unintelligible words, before finally managing to form them articulately, despite the simplest of questions:

Watching someone else’s misery was never something Ward was very good at, and truth be told he was feeling pretty miserable himself.

He was in Britain for business, a land that turned out to be more hospitable to his tastes than anticipated. But he was alone, processing the various misdeeds that left him here alone and drinking over it because what the fuck else was left to do. It was around his second bourbon that he caught the man sitting at a table obviously meant for two, a defeat he knew all too well painted all over his face and form (that held an extremely nice suit...) The (rude) gazes of everyone else told him that the man had probably been there a while. Ward knocked back the rest of his bourbon, slipping the bartender an inordinate amount of money because he was never any good at math anyway and got up. He stayed quiet until he was closer to the door before rushing in over to the stranger’s table as if he’d come in from outside. 

“I’m so sorry, traffic was absurd. Tell me you weren’t waiting too long?” He said it loud enough to make a point, taking his place at the chair opposite the other man, whispering, “I swear I don’t mean any harm, you’re just too handsome for all those pity-stares.”
