Plant of the Day
Monday 3 March 2025
The clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial Helleborus niger 'Christmas Carol' (Christmas rose, hellebore) put on an early display of flowers from February in Union Terrace Gardens, an Aberdeen park. The simple bowl-shaped white flowers turn apple green as they age. The plants contrasted well with the foliage of Epimedium cvs. and the larger Helleborus argutifolius (holly-leaved hellebore, Corsican hellebore).

The second lovey thing to come through the post for me today is the latest edition of @gardennewsmagazine which includes another piece by me on less common species and varieties of well known plants. . Following on from Fruit, Vegetables, Herbs and Herbaceous Perennials, today we look at Bulbs! More to come too, so get that subscription organised. . I have been shortlisted for the Garden Media Guild’s Alan Titchmarsh New Talent Award 2020, which I am delighted about. My writing in Garden News Magazine is part of the reason for this shortlisting. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I do writing them. Several of the magazine’s writers including @naomisladegardening, the Magazine itself and editor Karen Murphy are also up for awards, so fingers crossed for multiple wins. . #gardenmediaguild #gardenmediaguildawards #GMG #gardennewsmagazine #article #writer #blogger #gdnbloggers #bulbs #herbaceousperennial #iplantsman #herbs #fruit #vegetables #gardenwriter #gardening (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGkQVkygKoc/?igshid=129t63yiqmvef

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 1 January 2025
Happy New Year!
Not all window boxes need flowers, here the home owner had used a great selection of Heuchera cultivars (coral bells) to provide winter interest. The neat, low mounds of foliage come in a wide range of bold colours. These herbaceous plants thrive in partial shade in moist but well drained growing media or soil.

Plant of the Day

The vigorous herbaceous perennial Physalis alkekengi (Chinese lantern, alkegengi, bladder cherry, strawberry-and-tomato, winter cherry) is grown for the inflated, lantern-like deep orange calyces that develop after the small creamy-yellow flowers. Left on the plant the ‘lanterns’ eventually form a papery skeleton around the red berry. This plant will grow in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade but it can become invasive though in my experience it can be hard to establish.

In late winter the clump-forming evergreen Helleborus foetidus (stinking hellebore, bearfoot, ox heel, setterwort, stinkwort) starts to flower. This is a woodland native in the U.K. and will cope with a shaded location. It is a shortlived perennial but tends to self seed so young plants appear nearby.

Primula vulgaris subsp. sibthorpii (pink primrose) is a form of the native primrose that is found in the Balkans. This semi-evergreen rosette-forming perennial produces soft lilac-pink flowers with a distinct yellow eye. The endangered plant Kniphofia bruceae (red hot poker) disappeared from both gardens and from the wild until a few years ago when a lone plant was discovered in its native South Africa. Therefore, this large, clump-forming perennial is rare in cultivation but has been distributed to botanic and Royal Horticultural Society gardens in the U.K. to keep the species safe in cultivation.

The evergreen perennial Persicaria capitata (pink bobbles, pink-headed persicaria, pinkhead smartweed, pink knotweed, pink bubble persicaria) is cold-hardy for short periods but will dieback if below freezing for an extended time. The species forms a groundcover as the stems often form roots at leaf nodes, producing a dense mat of growth.

Growing in the shelter of a sunny wall with a well drained soil was Euphorbia myrsinites (broad-leaved glaucous spurge) (left) and Euphorbia rigida (upright myrtle spurge) (right). Both species are spreading, evergreen perennials with blue-green fleshy leaves with bright yellow flowers at the tips of the shoots in late spring and early summer. The sap is a skin and eye irritant and harmful if eaten.

Often found growing out of the cracks in old walls and pavements is Corydalis lutea (yellow corydalis, rock fumewort). This clump-forming, evergreen perennial is a garden escapee and produces clusters of bright yellow flowers from late spring into autumn in a sheltered site.
