Plant of the Day
Thursday 13 March 2025
In a front garden this Viola odorata (sweet violet, English violet, florist's violet, garden violet, March violet) was flourishing in the shade of a deciduous shrub. This native, rhizomatous perennial forms a loose mat of heart-shaped leaves with fragrant violet or white flowers in late winter and early spring. This plant can be considered invasive in some situations.

Damp shade. Anemone japonica and the tender Aspidistra elatior make up a summer grouping with a stone birdbath against a background of Hedera sp. The green ground cover plant is Helxine sp., which not only tolerates but requires dampness.

TRAMS CAN GO ON GRASS. Or grass can go on tram tracks? Unclear. But grass and trams can coexist LOOK:

You could probably put another groundcover on there, too. Like clover or moss or whatever happens to be native and also short enough.

Plant of the Day
Thursday 16 January 2025
The evergreen perennial Persicaria capitata (pink bobbles, pink-headed persicaria, pinkhead smartweed, pink knotweed, pink bubble persicaria) is cold-hardy for short periods but will dieback if below freezing for an extended time. The species forms a groundcover as the stems often form roots at leaf nodes, producing a dense mat of growth.

Ice Plant
Other types of ice plant bloom with different colors. The bright orange, inch and a half wide flowers of Lampranthus aurantiacus, a type of ice plant, should bloom between winter and spring, but a few are brightening my garden right now. This bright yellow flower in the picture is that of the variety ‘Glaucus’, which I grew from a cutting last year. My single low mounding plant is about a foot…

Convallaria Majalis
Convallaria majalis Deceptive, intrusive, and toxic hardly seem fair to describe this delicate looking groundcover that thrives at the wood’s edge. Known by various aliases, including “May Bells”, “Mary’s Tears”, and most commonly, “Lily-of-the-Valley”, but none reveal that it is a member of the asparagus family. The sweetly scented, pendent bell flowers and lush leaves even appear more like a…
