Arbre à la croissance démesurée, le paulownia a aussi la capacité d'absorber jusqu'à quatre fois plus de CO2 que d'autres espèces. Originaire d'Asie, il est de plus en plus planté en Europe mais certains parlent de concept "absurde".

Où arbre kiri, est un peu un arbre miracle pour certains. On le qualifie même de "sauveur du climat". Originaire d'Asie et peu exigeant, il pousse désormais aussi en Europe, comme dans une plantation agricole près de Bonn en Allemagne. Plantés là-bas il y a douze ans, certains arbres peuvent déjà être abattus. Il est considéré comme l'arbre le plus vigoureux de la planète mais la croissance fulgurante n'est pas le seul avantage il offre aussi des avantages pour le climat, car sa croissance rapide lui permet de fixer nettement plus de CO2 de l'atmosphère que d'autres espèces d'arbres indigènes par exemple", souligne-il. Le paulownia en fixerait même trois à quatre fois plus selon certaines estimations.

Les exploitants de ces plantations ont aujourd'hui des forêts en Espagne et en Allemagne. Car la demande mondiale en bois explose et les propriétés de cette espèce sont très recherchées par certains fabricants.

Malgré toutes ses qualités, les défenseurs de l'environnement voient l'arrivée de cet arbre d'un œil critique. Ils estiment qu'il n'a tout simplement pas sa place en Europe.

Pas besoin d'expérimenter" en Europe tout ce concept est absurde dans la mesure où nous disposons de nombreuses espèces d'arbres indigènes qui sont résistantes au climat", lance Holger Sticht, membre de l'ONG allemande Bund pour la Rhénanie du Nord-Westphalie. "Nous avons du chêne pédonculé, du chêne rouvre, de l'alisier des bois", énumère-t-il. "Nous avons tellement d'essences que nous n'avons pas besoin d'expérimenter. Et notre forêt n'est pas non plus un terrain d'expérimentation. Les paulownias sont pour l'instant cultivés uniquement sur d'anciennes surfaces agricoles reconverties. Et il n'y a aucun risque de prolifération, puisqu'il s'agit d'arbres hybrides.

En Suisse, on trouve des paulownias ornementaux dans certaines villes comme Genève mais sa culture intensive est pour l'heure inexistante.
