The drooping, crimson tassel-like racemes of tiny flowers of Amaranthus caudatus (love-lies-bleeding, chenile plant, Inca wheat, lady's riding whip, velvet flower, cat tail, tassel flower) are at their most dramatic at the end of summer and early autumn. This short-lived frost-tender plant is popular in summer bedding displays and for containers.

Monkees Annuals

Uh, so, wouldn't it be wild if there was, say, a link that would take you to a google drive containing scans of all of these annuals. Obviously this would be a folder created solely for my own personal use... but perhaps accidentally left open to anyone who followed that link..? 👀

So.

Today two family members ill-advisedly took me to two separate garden centers and told me to go wild and get what I want for my containers this year as a birthday present. And well yeah, this happened.

People ask me all the time how my pots keep blooming from May till November. The answer is simple but not easy. They need water daily and feed every two weeks. We are religious about it. Take care of your annuals and they’ll take care of you for months. There’s no sense in spending money on a nice annual basket if you drop the ball in the middle of the summer when they need the most care. They love the heat but require daily attention.

This front garden has been seeded with an annual meadow mix of orange flowered Eschscholzia californica (California poppy) and Calendula officinalis (pot marigold, common marigold, ruddles, Mary's gold, Scotch marigold) which contrast with blue flowered Nigella damascena (love-in-a-mist) and Borago officinalis (borage, starflower), and dotted with the pink blooms of Agrostemma githago (corn-cockle).

Stella in Anticipation at Pink Cadillac

It was still summertime when Stella visited Pink Cadillac in her A-Line dress for a hot prepared meal at Pink Cadillac Diner. So, unsurprisingly, the venue was filled to capacity with hungry tourists. While she waited for a vacant booth, she had some photos taken…

It’s that time of year when the annuals need protection. It’s wonderful to take a bath amidst lush greenery when it’s cold outside. This year I setup UV lights in the solarium to keep the palegoniums happy.
