the first iteration of the dream team is so funny.

imagine youre a regular new yorker and you’re being attacked by santas or bugs or devils at an art show and things are weird but you also can’t quite tell what’s actually happening (got to love umbral arcana) ? but you’re scared out of your mind until a drunk lady punches the scary monster in the face and the guy who’s clearly a drug dealer starts blasting fire out of his hands?? maybe he’s got a lighter and some hairspray, though he’s also holding a gun? and then a very nice and serious older guy is keeping everything calm and encouraging his friends and you think everything is going to be okay, especially because this nice sweet firefighter is making sure everyone’s safe. and you think he looks like mr march from the calendar!

then a massive rat man summons some crocodiles or a pack of rats or a cockroach that is unusually juicy and then broadway legend misty moore literally insults a monster to death whilst indiscriminately flirting with her friends.

and when it’s all over they’re acting like this is business as usual. and maybe you’re confused for like three minutes until you remember this is new york — who else would save you but a broadway star, a rat, a firefighter, a drug dealer, an alcoholic and kingston brown from uptown who helped you jumpstart your car three months ago

murph characters are great because he will make a little guy who is objectively hilarious as a concept and the he and brennan will take that little guy and emotionally destroy you.

David wrote Kugrash 50-60 letters!! Even though he’s furious at his dad because Kug hurt and abandoned him and Wally, he still wrote those letters telling his dad about what’s going on. What a heart wrenching detail.

Kugrash and his sons is one of my favourite relationships in D20.

Spoilers for Unsleeping City firstly

Something we should remember about Kugrash is that he's old. The Bruce that Kingston saw and shook hands with was an old guy. He's a grandfather. He is an old man rat rat man who described himself as, and I quote, "the shit that feeds the flies"

A pigeon was in love with him. His bestie was a 30-something year old 'divorcee' widow hairdresser from Staten Island who would tease his rat fur. He sometimes appeared to non magical people as a hairy baby. He'd get carried around by members of his party. I can't stress enough that all of this is being said about an old man rat rat man.

murphs face right after Brennan said the word Omnipotence in the final battle of unsleeping city chapter one makes me think he 100% knew hed lose kugrash because of the bagel like the constant frown, head in hands, he looked so upset but wanted someone else to process it first cause he KNEW

while everyone else was joking around, he just felt so upset and it was palpable

In The Unsleeping City Chapter 2 Brennan gives this big block of exposition to Murph as Kugrash. It’s very cool. And ya know, Murph is a really great DM. Definitely an asset to have at your table. It’s also way more resonant to have a beloved character hand over this info.
