* I’m excluding Trevor since I’m pretty sure he had no way of saving himself. I’m blaming Saw IV’s poor writing here since it was never clear if Trevor could’ve survived or if Art Blank was the only one intended to survive.
* Hoffman is excluded because (Hello Zepp intensifies)
* Even though Detective Matthews was more a guinea pig for Rigg’s test, he was still given a chance to save himself by shooting anyone who tried to go through the door before the timer ran out. So, he counts.
* Jeff is excluded since his test was already over. He was only really here to get shot by Strahm.
* Brenda counts since, after Rigg saved her, she attacked him as part of her own game.
* Rex is excluded since he was a guinea pig for Morgan’s trap.

Vogue — Opinion
Team Brenda Forever
By Fiorella Valdesolo
July 15, 2024
Tumblr media

“TV’s brashest 21-year-old talks revealingly about her wild past, her brief engagement, and ‘people who think I’m a bitch,’” the coverline next to a picture of Shannen Doherty reads on a 1992 issue of People magazine. A year later, on another People cover: “Out of Control! These days, Beverly Hills’ hard-partying, check-bouncing bad girl may be going way too far.”
In the ’90s—before a wave of early-aughts tabloids and bloggers like Perez Hilton made a mint lampooning young, female celebrities like Lindsay and Britney and Paris—Shannen Doherty was popular fodder. Drunken nights out, shotgun marriages, fights at the club, court-appointed anger-management classes, and other run-ins with the law were breathlessly chronicled for a celebrity-obsessed public thirsty to see the unraveling of the stars they tuned in to watch every week. Doherty was deemed unhinged, branded a liability. How the media treated her (and Drew Barrymore, too, for that matter) was a template for the years to follow, when such cruelty would become ever more commonplace and, with the dawn of social media, ever more accessible. Doherty was branded a bad girl; she was called difficult, a notoriously loaded term when lobbed at women.
But for teenage me, those were the very labels that made me fiercely love her. They were labels that Brenda Walsh, the character that arguably made Doherty most famous, had already confronted onscreen. When Beverly Hills, 90210 debuted in 1990, I was in junior high and already deeply familiar with Doherty from her roles as Jenny on Little House on the Prairie, Kris Witherspoon (opposite tween dream Chad Allen) on Our House, and as one of the titular mean girls in the seminal 1980s film Heathers. Brenda Walsh (played by a then 19-year-old Doherty) was introduced to audiences as a wide-eyed girl from Minnesota with a stretchy headband, mousy brown hair, and pastel-hued wardrobe who, along with her goody-two-shoes twin brother, Brandon, had been plopped into the decadence and debauchery of LA. “Nobody knows me here—I could be anybody, I could be somebody,” Brenda says to her brother on the show’s first episode as she anxiously considers what to wear on her first day at a school in a city that was definitely not Minneapolis. Beverly Hills, 90210 would dive into taboo topics like AIDS, domestic violence, eating disorders, suicide, and drug abuse, becoming a runaway hit for producer Aaron Spelling. All these years later, the show remains the pinnacle of teen drama, and Brenda its queen. (Let’s face it: The seasons after Spelling booted Doherty from the cast could never measure up, even with the addition of Tiffani Thiessen’s chaos-courting Valerie Malone.)

Over the course of the four seasons that Doherty was on 90210, Brenda would grow and shift, both in her look (along came the bodysuits, high-waist jeans, endlessly imitated dark brown hair with blunt bangs, and that signature knowing smirk) and her identity. We watched her decide to have sex for the first time (an episode that famously raised conservative eyebrows); contend with a pregnancy scare; fight and make up and break up (to the tune of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion”) with Dylan; rebel against her parents’ arcane rules; try on new personas (bonjour, Brenda Dubois); get arrested (for protesting animal testing, naturally); and face the aftermath of a best friend’s betrayal. Yet Brenda would also face well-publicized backlash from fans of the show, as people began to conflate the character with Doherty’s off-screen behavior. (There was even a popular ’90s zine called the I Hate Brenda Newsletter.)
Brenda—or was it Shannen?—became the girl people loved to hate. Doherty once said in an interview: “People couldn’t separate me from her, and I got sick of people assuming that I was as naughty and bad as Brenda was. It was all very hurtful.” Though one was fictionalized, they were both up against the complicated pressures of adolescence and wanting to be taken seriously. Both on television and off, Doherty was passionate, she was intense, she was straightforward, she was self-assured, and for all these reasons, she was dismissed and poorly regarded. For those of us navigating our own coming of age, and simultaneously facing harsh judgment from our families and peers, we saw ourselves in Brenda—and, in turn, in Shannen. I know I did.
When the news broke this week that Doherty had died from cancer, prompting an outpouring of social media tributes and Instagram messages from saddened friends, I saw that others felt the same way. Part of the sadness seemed to come from how hard Doherty had fought to live; she’d recently shared on her excellent and refreshingly candid podcast Let’s Be Clear how hopeful she felt about a new course of chemotherapy.
But for many of my fellow Gen X’ers and older millennials, we’d also lost a part of ourselves. We loved Shannen Doherty, we idolized her, but most of all, at some point, we saw ourselves in a version of her. We were all a little wild once; we were all a little difficult. We were all a little Brenda.

Will it gain the traction it needs? Probably not. But I'm not as... distant, about today, as I have been over the years. Because let's face it... This hits close to home for me. I said this in my original posting, too:
As someone who lives relatively near Orlando, I remember this day so vividly and I still feel a lot of pain for the victims even five years later.
I remember biting back tears in my living room because I wasn't out of the closet, and couldn't let my family know just how much this hurt me. I remember breaking down that night while scrolling the headlines, watching as the number of fatalities kept climbing. I remember staring at the button on Facebook asking me if I was safe.
And to this day, even with those involved and responsible gone... I still do not feel safe as a queer man in this state or in this country.
More importantly, though, it's important to highlight the community impacted by it, and the way onePULSE and its founder (Barbara Poma), the city of Orlando, and the State of Florida have exploited and continue to exploit the deaths of these individuals.
Information from here on out will be taken from the Community Coalition Agaisnt a Pulse Museum's official website, which can be found at the following link: [ LINK ]
The Community Coalition Against a Pulse Museum (CCAPM) is a group of surviving victims, family members of victims, activists, and scholars who have banded together to fight against the onePULSE Foundation's privatized memorial and museum complex. Our position is that money raised in the name of the mass shooting should go to the continued care of survivors. A public memorial park that does not seek to capitalize on the mass shooting in any way is the only option for a just memorial.
In addition, we seek justice for mass shooting victims by exposing the history and scope of unpermitted renovations and code violations at Pulse, which impaired the escape and rescue of shooting victims. We believe that Pulse owners Rosario Poma and Barbara Poma should be held accountable for these violations, rather than continuing to profit from a tragedy that was exacerbated by their illegal business decisions. We also want to see the City of Orlando held accountable for their continued failure to enforce the law and bring the business into compliance.
So what are the prominent issues?
WE ARE AGAINST COMMODIFYING MASS MURDER
The onePULSE Foundation has placed a gift shop feet away from where 49 people were murdered on the site of the interim memorial. We firmly renounce putting any price tag on the murder of our loved ones. The proposed museum is also slated to have a gift shop and a price of admission.
WE ARE AGAINST TURNING A PUBLIC TRAGEDY INTO PRIVATE PROFITS
Pulse nightclub owner, Barbara Poma, refused to sell the property to the City of Orlando for a public memorial. Instead, she created the onePULSE Foundation and has taken an executive salary in her self-made position as CEO. Perks have also included national recognition, celebrity, political connections, and undeserved accolades as an LGBTQ+ ally.
WE ARE AGAINST TURNING A MASS SHOOTING INTO A TOURIST ATTRACTION
The onePULSE Foundation has received a $10 MILLION tourism development tax grant from Orange County for the building of a museum. The tax application shows how the proposed memorial/museum complex has been intended to increase tourism during the off-season. The corporate Board of Trustees also reflects the local tourism industry.
WE SUPPORT INVESTING IN THE CONTINUED CARE OF SURVIVORS
Money raised in the name of the mass shooting at Pulse is going to multi-million dollar buildings rather than the continued care of the people who were directly affected. Available services and organizations have not provided adequate care to survivors and the onePULSE Foundation has not stepped in to fill any gaps; focusing instead on cultural and "educational" programs, while ignoring the ongoing needs of survivors.
WE CALL OUT A CHANGING MISSION
For years, the onePULSE Foundation raised funds for community grants for victims' families and survivors. In 2019, "community grants" were removed from the organization's mission. According to the released 2018 990s, only $1k was spent on community grants. People have donated money to the organization thinking that they were helping survivors.
WE ACKNOWLEDGE CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
onePULSE Foundation CEO Barbara Poma is currently being sued by survivors and victims' families as part of a security negligence lawsuit. This lawsuit also alleges the illegal transfer of the Pulse nightclub property which was transferred via quit claim deed in the months after the shooting to two other LLCs owned by Barbara and Rosario Poma. Funds raised by the non-profit are being invested in the Pulse property that the Poma's still own.
As of 2024, this case is still pending, with the latest service list being posted on the docket as of June 11. The case number is publicly available (2018-CA-006102-O) and is searchable via the Orange County Clerk of Courts Record Search.
WE AFFIRM A PUBLIC MEMORIAL PARK IS STILL POSSIBLE
Public memorial parks have been the overwhelming response to mass shootings around the country, including Aurora, Columbine, Las Vegas, and Newtown. Most have been built by volunteers, with no executive salaries. The OnePULSE Foundation's proposed museum attraction seeks to unnecessarily turn the shooting into a spectacle and requires merchandising the tragedy. Mass murder is not for sale!
WE CONTINUE TO EXPOSE UNPERMITTED RENOVATIONS AND CODE VIOLATIONS
Public records affirm that Pulse Nightclub was a death trap due to its unpermitted renovations and code violations. Documents show that these issues affected the both the escape and rescue of Pulse survivors on June 12, 2016. We continue to collect, document, and uncover these issues since the City of Orlando has still not released all relevant records to the public.
Survivors of the incident, as well as their families and those who have faced similar tragedy, have also signed an open letter [ LINK ] calling attention to these issues, provided documented evidence of the above claims [ LINK ], and have also been running a petition since 2019 to call attention to the matter:
Of course, it is important to note that the individuals mentioned (Barbara Poma, the Orlando City Council, etc.) are not the only ones involved in making this state an unsafe place for its queer community.
As noted in my original posting as well, the unsafe nature of this state runs through its government. The fight for our rights, our recognition, and our safety still continues. Here are some facts from the original post (dated June 12, 2021):
In June 2021, the Governor of Florida vetoed an "item-lined budget bill" - that legally provides mental health, counseling, and compensation directly towards victims of the June 2016 Pulse nightclub Orlando shooting.
While they cannot be enforced, sodomy laws still exist in Florida to this day. Every year, we are still criminalized by a technicality.
In many places, same-sex domestic partnerships are still not granted. It is only viable in approximately nine counties, thirty cities, and one town.
It took until 2016 for same-sex couples to be granted the same parental rights during in vitro fertilization and surrogacy as opposite-sex couples. Before then, the non-biological mother and father was not the child's legal parent nor guardian.
The state's "hate crime law" only accounts for sexual orientation, and does not protect victims who were attacked for their gender identity.
Anti-discrimination laws for sexual orientation and gender identity are not state-wide nor equally applicable within each county/town.
On June 1, 2021, Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis signed a bill to exclude transgender women from participating in sports designated for female students. This bill passed because of a last-minute legislative "procedural maneuver". The HRC is currently establishing a campaign to try and stop the law from going into effect (called "nullification") on midnight July 1.
Gay-panic and Trans-panic are still viable legal defenses, resulting in these abhorrent hate crimes to be decreased from murder to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Conversion therapy against minors is not banned state-wide, and is still legal within many areas of the state. In fact, in some areas, a ban on the practice is deemed "unenforceable".
And that is just the tip of the iceberg, because if you've been active in your advocacy for the community (or at the very least, following me for a decent period of time)... Then you know just how unsafe Florida has become. You know how, even under the Biden administration, people like Governor Ron DeSantis have gone unchallenged in their writing and enforcement of vile legislation. You know how this legislation has begun creeping its way up to the top, to the federal level, and remained unchallenged the whole way up.
Here are some more "fun facts" about just how much we must fight against in the wake of this tragedy:
States like Florida have eliminated 80% of all trans adult care (SB 254), adults can be thrown in jail for using the bathroom of their gender identity (SB 1674), and trans people with correct gender markers on their drivers licenses can be charged with fraud (Florida Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles memo).
The State of Florida has had several travel advisories issued against it by local LGBTQ+ organizations (e.g., Equality Florida) and national organizations (e.g., Human Rights Campaign).
Likewise, many social media laws targeting "adult content and pornography" (HB 3) include sneaky, vague language that will very much target the existence of queer folk using the internet in this state.
More states within the United States are explicitly passing anti-trans legislation than not, and moreso now than ever [ source; dated June 4th ].
The time for relying on those above us is over. We MUST kill the plague of individualism and build community. If we don't support one another, nobody will. No amount of pinkwashing, placation, or sanitation will change that.
We are here. We are queer. We will never forget, and we cannot allow ourselves to.

BELOW IS A VERY INFORMATIVE SUBMOSSION FROM AN ANON ABOUT MARIA ELENA RIOS WITH RESEARCH AND CITATIONS REGARDING HER PAST ISSUES.
These occurances, along with her late statement and its contents, have led myself and many others to voice our continued support of Tenoch Huerta.
—-----—-‐-------‐–—
I know a lot of you are using Google Translate, so I guess I could help by breaking down the accusations and kind of giving you a timeline I guess?
June, 2012
This happened in Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca (Where she's from)
She and her sister (Silvia Ríos Ortiz) were accused of forced entry and injuries against the victim.
The victim says she was resting in her house and Maria Elena was yelling outside her house "hija de tu puta madre sal de tu casa" (which I roughly translate as 'motherfucker get out of your house')
The victim didn't pay attention to it. María Elena entered her house, grabbed her by the hair and yelled at her sister to enter the house so they both could hit the victim.
Silvia (Maria Elena's sister) entered the house. They both grabbed her by the hair and pushed her against the wall, making her hit her head with it.
Then, the victim says she looked up and Maria Elena had a knife (she describes it as saw knife), which she used to cut the victim's left knee open (she adds it was 20 centimeters/around 8 inch).
Then, the document gets cut.
There's also a witness testimony (it also gets cut)
In Brenda Solano's article, it's added that her mom was also there and they cut the woman with pocket knives and scissors on her face, crotch and face. All of this because she allegedly was Maria Elena's dad's lover.
September, 2012
This one doesn't involve Maria Elena, but I guess is relevant to understand how her family operated around Oaxaca.
This happened in a elementary school in Huajuapan de León, Oxaca
Basically her sister Silvia Rios Ortiz and I guess their relative, Mary Carmen Ortiz Martinez approached a woman when she was dropping her kids' lunch. They yelled insults, threatened and followe her because she allegedly had an affair with Mary's husband.
The victim asked them not to "fix their problem" there because of her kids and also her brother (who has down syndrome and couldn't understand what was going on) but the two women insisted. She had to hide.
It gets cut.
Scanned documents can be found here (x)
2015
Maria Elena's brother is accused of murder. The documents are avaible here -the last ones- (x).
This is important because the Frente Nacional Indígena y Campesino (FNIC) got involved. It roughly translates to National Indigenous and Peasant Front. Basically, poor and indigenous people came together to ask for justice in this case. They had to protest to get Carlos Ríos Ortiz to go through trial.
The FNIC's representative said that they were worried about this process because "they didn't want him to get out of jail" because "he has links with politicians and people in power". (You can see a picture of the protests in this note ).
This is hearsey but the comments call him a "priista" (supporter of the PRI political party in Mexico).
Allegedly, in Brenda Solano's article, we read he actually got help from Silvia Rios' partner, Hugo Jairo Hernandez (PRI) and Maria Elena's boyfriend at the time (who was the son of the city hall president, José Feria Rodriguez -PUP-) and their political links.
2022 (Post attack)
Silvia's sister appears on Alejandro Murat's (PRI) payroll (proof here). She's linked with the word "saxophonist". If true, she was receiving around 995,000 usd yearly.
2023
Maria Elena has been accused by Maribel Perez (her attacker's lawyer) for threats. Maria Elena's tweets were quoted as proof and also the people that have approached the victim have said things like "I hope you get acid thrown at you", "You're a bitch for defending that son of a bitch", "Stop revictimizing Maria Elena", "I hope it [acid attack] happens to you", "How can you not be more empathic with other women", "You, a woman, are Maria Elena's biggest enemy". (You can see the documents of this complaint here)(You can see tweets here, here). Maribel has also stated that Maria Elena has threatened her staff (proof here)
Not directly related to Maria Elena, but I think it's also important to know that Maribel Perez has also reported on being approached on a parking lot by two women in a car. They prevented her from leaving and told her they knew "she's Vera Carrizal's lawyer" and because of that they would throw acid at her, so she could "learn her lesson" (note here). Then they followed her.
Brenda Solano, an independent journalist, and the news outlet she writes to (Pajaros en el Alambre de Oaxaca) have accused Maria Elena of threatining her because she realised an article about the things I have commented on here. She also went all the way to Oaxaca to investigate.
Apart from this, some other things I think are worth mentioning and have resurfaced:
Maria Elena's dad and granddad were linked to stealing cars, drug trafficking and selling guns in Brenda Solano's article. (Note: She doesn't show proof, but she mentions a man who told this to the police and then was murdered back in 1998).
Maria Elena and her sister tried to deface a woman, who didn't speak to Brenda because she's scared of retaliation.
Maria Elena and her sister registered a kid twice (proof) and are being investigated by the FBI for falsifying documents. Silvia Ríos used the document to demand child support from her former partner, Hugo Jairo Hernández Sánchez (PRI). News outlets report this happened when Hernández was working on his campaign to run as president of the city hall. The man was a rent collector and close to Ulises Ruiz Ortiz (PRI), who's being accused of corruption (he's described as known for his "political vindictiveness").
An audio of Maria Elena has resurfaced. In it, she says "I'm going to kill myself because of you and it's going to be your fucking fault and you're going to carry it for the rest of your life!". (Note: We can't say for sure it's her, but if a newsmedia is risking to be accused by her, I'd say they're pretty sure about it).
She has been accused of being linked to the PAN political party because of her connection with Aurora Sierra (video here). She also gave an statement supported by PRI, PRD and PAN (video here).
Pajaros en el Alambre said back in february she's being prepared to be a representative candidate by the PRI-PAN-PRD-MC (x, x, x). In the screenshots I quoted, they basically say how her attack has been used as a way to gain sympathy by different political movements, and how the people who have spoken in her favor have been really corrupt in the past.
Her ex-partner (who is accused of the acid attack) was a PRI politician.
(Note. PRI, PRD and PAN are against Morena (AMLO/Mexico's president political party). Not implying anything but Tenoch had to take legal action due to people attacking him after his meeting with AMLO (People were doxxing his daughters and family and trying to mess with his career and intimacy)......... Not implying anything. Just food for thought.)
It's a lot, but I hope it helps to grasp the debacle around her. I'd post it myself but I'm too shy and tbh this has been a lot for me, I don't think I can handle rude anons. I just made the effort because I feel like I can contribute in that way.

------------------------
Cordell looked up at the ship and felt a twist in his gut that he shouldn’t have felt until they were on the open ocean. He’s not sure how Geri talked him into this cruise, but it was way too late to back out now.
He should’ve faked being sick this morning.
“Come on, Cordi! They’re boarding in 10 minutes!”
Cordell took a deep breath and grabbed their suitcases. “You sure these tickets are non-refundable?”
Geri sighed. “Cordi, you promised.”
“I know, I know but-”
“I know cruises aren’t exactly your thing but your parents paid for this and it’s our anniversary and-”
“I know, I know.” Cordell kissed her. “I just- Water’s not my thing. I mean I can swim but the last time I was on a boat was during Marine’s training and I’m lucky my captains never saw me hurl afterwards.”
Geri chuckled. “Well, this isn’t exactly Marines training. And this cruise is perfectly safe. They have safety standards to meet and all the staff are trained for emergencies. And it’s only for two weeks. We’ll be fine, I promise.”
Cordell huffed. “You know that’s the line they give before everything bad that happens in those natural disaster movies, right?”
“Oh my god-”
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding.” He kissed her again. “Happy anniversary. Let’s get boarded. You have all the paperwork, right?”
“If you got the bags,” she teased.
“Ah, the real reason you married me: free manual labor.”
Geri laughed. “I don’t know if I’d call you ‘free’. I mean, the amount you eat alone….”
“Hey, I’m a growing boy!”
“Last I checked, you were fully grown 20 years ago.”
“I- We don’t know that for sure!” He smiled and followed Geri’s laughter up to the pier.
He could handle a one week tour. If not for his own sense of adventure, he could do it for his wife.
—------------------
“We’re still looking out for a possible hurricane forming at the base of the Gulf of Mexico. No formal warnings have been put in place but we caution anyone going into these waters to stay alert. If you have any concerns, stay out of the water and warn your neighbors to do the same.”
“Still listening to those weather reports, Cassie?”
She looked up at her supervisor. “Weather kind of impacts our job, Brenda. And they’re saying this hurricane could be a big deal.”
Brenda sighed. “If it was that big of a deal, they’d issue a warning. Which they haven’t. So, until they do, we have jobs to do. And for you, that means corralling lost passengers.”
Cassie rolled her eyes but put on her big “I Can Help!” badge, picked up her map, and went to her assigned hallways. She was technically part of the event coordinating team but before the opening receptions, getting passengers to their assigned cabins was an all-hands-on-deck situation. The last thing they needed was a kid getting lost in the engine block or a very good actor getting themselves a free room.
Clearing her assigned hallways was easier than she ever could have hoped. It was a couples cruise, mostly full of elderly couples who had been on a cruise before (some of them she even recognized) with a few newbies who were still pretty capable of using a map. The most she had to do was help reorient a few of the newer ones and carry the bags for one particularly sweet pair of ladies who reminded her of her abuela.
After the crowd died down, she waited for a bit to catch any stragglers. They wouldn’t want to start any of the introductory talks or safety presentations until all the passengers were settled and they were on a very strict timetable. She could waste 10 minutes now to safe someone's life later.
On her final sweep, she passed by some annoyed voices from the stairwell. Just as she’d feared.
“Hey!” she said as she opened the door to the stairs, smile still firmly in place. “Can I help you with anything?”
The couple quit arguing and turned to her. The man looked a little annoyed (and a tad green around the gills) but his partner gave her a friendly smile. “Hi,” she said. “I think we’re a little lost but my husband is allergic to asking for assistance.”
“Well, that’s what I’m here for,” Cassie assured her. “Where are you trying to get to?”
“We’re trying to find our cabin, Room 234C.” She showed Cassie their tickets.
She nodded. “Alright. Well, you’re on the right track. 234C is on the level above us. Just take a left out of the stairwell and it should be a few doors down on the right.”
“I told you,” the man muttered.
The woman glared at him then smiled at Cassie again. “Thank you so much. What was your name?”
“Oh, I’m Cassie.” She could only hope they were asking for “glowing review” reasons.
“Well, thank you Cassie. I’m Geri and this is my husband, Cordell. I’m sure we’ll probably run into each other again; he’s terrible with directions.”
Cordell gave her a tight smile. “Yes, thank you. We’ve gotta get to our room now so we can get to that safety presentation. Especially with that storm brewing….”
Geri sighed. “Cordi, I told you, we’ll be fine. I’m sure they’ve taken all that into account, right Cassie?”
Cassie nodded. “We’re closely following all the safety recommendations from the weather authorities,” she said in her best customer service voice. “And attending the safety presentations will certainly help decrease the risk of injury, so please get settled in your room as quickly as possible.”
“That sounds great. Thank you.” Geri smiled and the couple started heading up the stairs, their shoes pounding on the metal staircase.
Cassie kept her smile up until they were out of sight and sighed. She checked her watch and decided it was safe to head back to her office. She had to get ready for the presentation too.
—----------------
Cordell thought he should get extra Husband Points for agreeing to eat more than cheese and crackers on this floating death trap. His stomach felt unsettled since the minute he walked on board and it hadn’t gotten better since they left port. If anything, it got worse.
He knew it should be impossible to feel the movement of the ocean on a ship this big, but he swore he could feel every dip and swell of the waves as they hit the ship. It took everything in him to walk in a straight line, and his relationship with solid food was on a steep decline.
He was trying to make this fun for Geri. He really was. But it was hard to enjoy dinner when all he wanted to do was curl up around the toilet.
Surely this would earn him the right to pick their next anniversary vacation.
“Are you feeling okay, Cordi?”
Cordell shook himself out of his thoughts and smiled. Or, at least, he tried to. “I’m fine, babe.”
Geri frowned. “Are you sure? You’ve barely touched your steak.”
Cordell looked down at his plate and his stomach curled again. He’d ordered the steak because it was familiar. But by the time it got to their table he was starting to feel sick again and he knew from experience it wouldn’t taste nearly as good coming back up.
But he didn’t want to bring her down with that. So he smiled and said “I guess I wasn’t in the mood for steak after all.”
“Oh. Do you want to order something else or-”
The boat lurched suddenly and Cordell felt the remains of his lunch start to make a reappearance. “Uh, you know what? I gotta hit the restroom but why don’t you order me something new and I’ll try it when I get back.”
“Cordi, wha-”
“Thanks, Ger! You’re the best.” He quickly got up and left the dining room, barely missing colliding with a staff member on his way out.
As much as he intended to find a bathroom, his lunch was not being patient and the balcony was very welcoming. Without thinking much further, he ran over and leaned far over the edge, heaving as what little food was in him rushed out.
Panting, he stayed leaning over the edge, trying to get as much bile out as possible before he returned to dinner.
Why the hell had he agreed to this cruise?
“Sir? Can I help?”
Slowly, he stood up and looked over at the woman standing next to him. He squinted at her, trying to recognize her. He recognized the voice, and she looked familiar, even in the dim light.
“You- You’re the lady that helped us find the cabin. Kammie?”
She smiled. “Cassie. Do you need help?”
“Uh, a little….”
She held her hands out. “Let me see your wrists?”
Skeptical, he leaned his lip against the railing to keep him upright and presented his wrists. He watched as she aligned her fingers at the center of his wrists, right under the crease, and pressed hard.
In a few seconds, the nausea passed and he felt less dizzy. “How….?”
She winked at him. “Old trick I learned in my early days. Wait here a sec.”
She darted back inside the dining area and came back with a glass of fizzy water and a handful of crackers. “Nibble on these and drink the seltzer. It should settle your stomach a bit.”
He muttered a thanks and followed her directions. “I think if I knew I had seasickness I would’ve tried harder to pass on this vacation,” he murmured.
She shrugged. “Well, you live and learn. The good news is, you’ll only feel it for a few days. Once your body gets used to it, you’ll be fine. Well, aside from shaky legs on land but that’ll fade too.”
He grunted. “Yeah, sounds great. Thank you for this, really.”
“Hey, it’s just part of the job. Here.” She opened a tin of breath mints for him. “Take a couple of these. And maybe recommend to your wife that you guys hang out around the deck more until you get used to things at sea. Fresh air and being able to keep your eye on the horizon helps.”
He smiled. “I’ll try that. Thanks.”
“No problem. Let me know if you need anything else. I’m an events coordinator so I’m pretty much always around.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
She smiled and walked away, presumably to handle some kind of event coordinator stuff. Cordell sighed and started sucking on the breath mints. He had a couple minutes before Geri would start to worry about him, but knowing her she probably already picked up on his seasickness and was gearing up to lecture him for keeping secrets for her sake. It was an argument they’d had before and one they would probably have again.
Thank God she loved him.
—-------------
Cassie was woken up by a blaring alarm. She groaned and sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. It was only their third day on the water; what could possibly be going wrong this early in?
She hoped it was a drill she’d forgotten about. She really, really hoped so.
But she couldn’t assume that, so she grabbed her high-vis jacket, her megaphone, and her walkie and rushed out of her room.
The minute she stepped in water, she knew it wasn’t a drill. Something was definitely wrong.
“Brenda, what’s going on?” she called into the walkie.
“That damn storm is what’s going on!” Brenda shrieked. “Out of nowhere it headed right for us! Help us get people into the lifeboats!”
“Lifeboats? In a storm we should-”
“Take people below, I know, but we’ve been hit with some kind of debris and the boys downstairs say we’re taking on water. Lifeboats aren’t our safest option but until someone can get out here they’re our best option. Now get out here!”
Cassie ran for the upper deck, splashing water slowly climbing higher up her legs. She ran into a few other passengers on her way and urged them to head toward the lifeboats.
“Cassie, what’s going on?”
She whirled around and saw her favorite passengers. “Cordell, Geri, it’s a long story but you need to get to the lifeboats. We got hit by that storm out of nowhere and we’re taking on water. We’re waiting on help but there’s not much time for us to get off.”
Geri gulped but nodded and Cordell gripped her arm. “Ger, come on. We gotta go.”
“I know, I know. I’m sor-”
“Don’t apologize. Let’s just go.”
Cassie directed them and took her time guiding other passengers before she made her way to the top deck. The passengers came first, especially when some of them had trouble moving.
By the time she made it up there, there was a scary amount of water washing up on the deck. It took everything she had to keep upright. She joined the line to help load people into the boats, but with the storm picking up it was getting harder to keep things moving calmly.
As she was helping load the last of the passengers, the boat tipped badly and a wave came over the deck.
It was just enough to make her lose her footing and send her over the railing.
—-------------
Cordell woke up to the sun on his face and sand under his back. He tried to remember when he fell asleep on the beach; surely Geri would’ve woken him up so that they could get back to the cruise ship on time.
The cruise ship…..
His eyes snapped open as memories of the day before flooded in. He sat up, frantically looking around. “Geri!” he called- or at least, he tried to. His voice was hoarse, probably from a mix of saltwater and dehydration. “Geri!” he tried again, before getting to his feet.
He scanned the beach around him. The lifeboat they’d used was about five feet away from him. On shaky legs, he walked over to it, and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Geri inside. “Geri….” he knelt beside the boat and tried to shake her away. “Geri, please…..”
Thankfully, her face scrunched and she groaned awake. “Cordi? Wha- What happened?”
“We got hit by that storm,” he reminded her. “I-I don’t know where we are now but I think we’re stuck for a while.”
Geri nodded, then groaned again as she tried to sit up. “I- Is it just us here?”
He shrugged. “I didn’t see anyone else, but I just woke up.” He knew there were more people in their lifeboat but there were no people or footprints anywhere.
Geri slumped. “Damn. Okay. Well…. Now what?”
Cordell shrugged. “Find water and shelter if we can. Then think about finding help.”
Geri nodded and reached for him. “Sounds… sounds like a plan.”

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 07/12/2024 (Christmas Garbage)
If you were sick of me talking about Christmas-themed double A-sides from the incredibly long special feature earlier this week… I have bad news. There are two debuts and one of them’s Rudolph. Gracie Abrams is at #1 on the UK Singles Chart for a fifth week with “That’s So True”, otherwise, it’s all merriment so have a wintry welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Tumblr media
content warning: death
Rundown
Okay, so once we’re fully in the Christmas weeks, time isn’t real, structure is gone and we may as well have fun with it, so let’s start the rundown with the top five instead, and in reverse order, because why not? Gracie Abrams is at #1, sure, then we have “Last Christmas” by Wham! at #2, “APT.” by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars at #3, “Sailor Song” by Gigi Perez at #4, “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey at #5, and whilst we’re here, I won’t talk about all the Christmas gains simply for how many there are – just returns, new peaks and the top five – therefore shout out to Brenda Lee at #6 with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.
With that out of the way, let’s plunge right into holiday music, as in December, the rundown is “what came back?” and “what left?” nearly exclusively. We shall bid a very informal welcome back to the late Frank Sinatra’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” at #75, Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe” at #66, Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)” at #62, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas” by Perry Como, the Fontaine Sisters, Mitchell Ayres and his orchestra at #60, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” by Darlene Love at #56 (one of my personal favourites), “Carol of the Bells” by John Williams at #53, “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter at #51 (not sure how that one snuck in the stocking, but it returned too), “Merry Xmas Everybody” by Slade at #50, “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” by… oh, don’t make say it – John Lennon, Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir – at #49, “I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday” by Wizzard at #46, “One More Sleep” by Leona Lewis at #45, “Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney at #44 and “Feliz Navidad” by José Feliciano at #40, as well as new peaks for last week’s Amazon originals, “Christmas Magic” by Laufey at #39 – she also has a new peak for “Winter Wonderland” at #24 – and “It Can’t Be Christmas” by Tom Grennan at #25. Oh, and our only notable gains outside of festivities are “The Days” by Chrystal at #38 because of new remixes, I’m pretty sure, I’ve yet to hear them, as well as “Messy” by Lola Young at #35.
So, what left to make room for all that? Well, most of it’s going to com back but you know the jist by now, no one new to this blog will read this of all episodes as a first read, but still: notable dropouts. UK Top 75. Five weeks. Peak in the top 40. ‘Tis what I cover, and ‘tis the season. This week, we bid farewell to “Juno” by Sabrina Carpenter, “St. Chroma” by Tyler, the Creator featuring Daniel Caesar, “labour” by Paris Paloma, “I Only Smoke When I Drink” by nimino, “Burning Down” by Alex Warren, “Heavy is the Crown” by Linkin Park, “Somedays” by Sonny Fodera, Jazzy and D.O.D, “Close to You” by Gracie Abrams, “Move” by Adam Port, Stryv, Keinemusik, Orso and Malachiii, “Kisses” by BL3SS and CamrinWatsin featuring bbyclose – wow, all the EDM-pop ensemble casts exiting today – then “HOT TO GO!” by Chappell Roan, “I Had Some Help” by Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen and “Austin (Boots Stop Workin’)” by Dasha. I could have easily missed some here, but if I did… I don’t know, go watch Spectrum Pulse, let’s talk about a reindeer.
New Entries
#72 – “Run Rudolph Run” – Mark Ambor
Produced by Mark Ambor, Parker Sundby and Alex Mak
If you didn’t like Amazon Music originals – I don’t either – how about “Spotify Singles”? No, this isn’t a dating site for Clairo fans, this is a series of singles Spotify has been pushing out for years, and this is the “Belong Together” guy’s recording of Chuck Berry’s jovial Christmas classic about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The original 1958 recording is a fun rock and roll ditty that is fully in Berry’s wheelhouse and features very high praise of Rudolph being the “mastermind” of the other reindeers, as well as some cute dialogue between Santa Claus and some stereotypical kids of the age. He also completely makes a reindeer up – “Randolph” is not usually included in the list, but I feel like Berry ad-libbed in an early take that was used as the final recording, and it just stuck. This version first charted in 1964, peaking at #36 whilst The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, a Christmas #1 I discussed in that last special episode, was topping the chart. It returned in 2019 and has thus far reached as high as #49 on the annual Christmas flush. This new version from Ambor is cute enough and you can tell a lot of fun was had recording it, but it may ramp up the bubblegum a bit too much with those coy backing doo-wop harmonies and a very gentle, faceless delivery that is really far away from Berry’s original, richer recording. Part of why old 50s and 60s Christmas music that sounds straight out of a Claymation special works is because of the warmth of their performers that can sell the charm of the ridiculous fantasy characters but not overdo the saccharine children’s story elements, which are always present but often not the focus since the songs are performed with some degree of subtlety or awareness. This is not, and that’s fine – neither is “Underneath the Tree” and I like that song – but this feels like pure bubblegum novelty instead of anything worth returning to over the original.
#55 – “Empty Out Your Pockets” – Juice WRLD
Produced by Nick Mira
For Christmas dinner, we’re feasting on a five year-old corpse. Whoever at Interscope in charge of Juice WRLD’s masters has pumped out a presumably final posthumous album, The Party Never Ends, compiled of mostly useless, demo-esque leftovers that have been scrapped together and “cleaned up” partly in post by Cashmere Cat, benny blanco, etc. with a few tracks just kept relatively untouched from their leaks. Given this is one verse and solely produced by Juice’s frequent collaborator Nick Mira, I assume this can be included in that, but it doesn’t make it particularly good, or give it any reason to justify its release. Juice had a knack for catchy freestyling, but there is no structure to this, I don’t think there ever was intended to be until the lines were punched in for a vaguely cohesive flexing verse that still derails into a repetitive bridge before returning to the copy-pasted chorus. It’s basically a recording of Juice doing word association fragmented together into a “song” over a decent enough piano-led trap beat. Clearly unfinished, clearly laying there and placed on the album with little effort for a late-year release, I’m just glad this newest record isn’t proving nearly as successful so maybe the dead man’s vault can stop being raided for so-called grails.
Conclusion
Let’s be real: who cares? What song’s better, everyone – posthumous Juice WRLD leftover slop or a milquetoast cover of a children’s song that a corporation made the guy record? Can I give any of this “Best of the Week”, really? If there even is a week to speak of, what’s the point of crowning the best of the two? It’s like choosing between foot-and-mouth disease and… it’s the Christmas chart in two weeks, no idea what’s going on next week if anything, but I’ll see you then.

Brenda Benton, 35 (USA 1987)
Brenda Benton's survivors sued Chicago's notorious Biogenetics abortion facility after her death. She was put under general anesthesia for the abortion on March 13, 1987. By then the abortion facility had already killed Sandra Lynn Chmiel and maimed countless other clients.
Abortionists Dusan Zivkovic and/or V. Perez were responsible for the abortion. Brenda was discharged without anyone from Biogenetics noticing the danger she was in.
After she was discharged, Brenda developed fever, chills, and back pain. The suit says that Brenda returned to Biogenetics to report the symptoms on March 27. Zivkovic performed a D&C before transferring her to Martha Washington Hospital. Then she was transferred to Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's hospital on April 6, where she died on April 20.
Her death was due to infection, overwhelming septicemia and hepatic necrosis from toxicity reaction to abortion anesthesia. Zivkovic failed to determine that Brenda had an adverse reaction to drugs he'd given her and failed to detect and respond to her medical emergency in a timely and appropriate way. An expert opinion on the case attributes Brenda's death to inappropriate follow-up and septicemia leading to fatal complications.
Brenda was one of many victims of negligence and malpractice at Biogenetics. Many clients were injured, disabled and/or killed by abortions at Biogenetics, but the facility wasn’t shut down until yet another client was killed by their malpractice. Women deserve better.

Hey! I don't know if you've already done it, but if not could you make a description of what the brothers look like?
(I'm gonna assume you're talking about the Foundling Villa) I don't wanna really put descriptions for the reader's family because I don't want to say "yeah, you're parents are both blonde and have light skin" when someone's who's reading it is another ethnicity and they don't look like that at all. However, I am going to put a list of character down below just as a recap.
So, The Williams Royal Family:
King of Williams- Reader's father (not super involved and just wants to garner money for himself and the kingdom)
Queen of Williams- Reader's mother. Was originally a duchess but married King of Williams because he was royalty. (is obsessed with climbing the social ladder. Wants her daughters to marry the wealthiest royalty in Formuline)
Robert- First child of King and Queen of Williams. Married to Cambria who is currently pregnant with their child (a chill brother, but super protective of reader)
Brenda- Second child of King and Queen of Williams. Eldest daughter. Married to a duke of Haas and has the platonic, friendship love with her husband. Because of this relationship, her husband let's her travel much more to visit reader. (sarcastic, loves girl-talk, and wants to make sure reader is safe and okay)
Kaitlyn- Third born to King and Queen of Williams. Married to a prince of Alpine and cultivated a loving, romantic deep love with him. Was the one to write to Charles about you. Can worm secrets out of people, but uses them to help others (we don't know much about her, only that she's pretty busy and can't spend much time with reader. Is close to reader)
Marie- Fourth born to King and Queen of Williams (holy shit how many pregnancies did I make reader's mum go through?). Has a very restrictive marriage to a misogynist earl of Wolff (again, we don't know much about her, only that she has a lot of responsibilities and that her husband pressures her into)
Reader- Fifth child of King and Queen of Williams. it's you. You've read the series. You know what's happening
Ralph- Last-born child of King and Queen of Williams. Hasn't been married yet, but the Queen is pushing him to choose someone of the court (very sarcastic and hilarious. Doesn't love the court procedures and is probably the closest to reader)
Y'all know the Leclerc family, cause that's who we're here for. However, here are their advisors:
Jules Bianchi- Steward (staff mangement) Fernando Alonso-Chamberlain (looked after King Hervé) Fred Vasseur- Marshal (horse/transportation dude) Daniel Ricciardo- a Knight Carlos Sainz- a Lord Pierre Gasly- an Advisor
Foundling Villa Household:
Yuki Tsunoda- Chef Lando Norris- Stable master Oscar Piastri- Gardener Nico Hulkenberg- a Knight
Other Important People in Formuline that will come up at some point-
King Jos Verstappen- King of Redull Prince Max Verstappen- Prince of Redull Sergio Perez- A Redull Advisor Samuel Hasting- A Redull Duke that I made up King Lewis Hamilton- King of Wolff King Guenther Stein- King of Haas
