a big lesson for me was learning that most things are not as fragile as I’d believed. missing a class, or turning in a bad assignment, won’t instantly destroy your professor’s opinion of you. accidentally saying something harsh won’t make your friend want to end the friendship. it takes work to repair these things - it takes effort and research and sometimes a sincere apology - but you can do that because they’re not irreparably broken. what you’ve worked to build, in academia and in relationships and in life, is stronger and more enduring that your mind may teach you to believe. don’t let imagined fragility lead you to giving up

ANKETHIA, THE GRANDMOTHER OF TRANQUILITY

( character is a woman, she/her ! )

feeling the hype for the new predator films so i've decided to revisit my main yautja OC's new design! i've been working on her on and off for a couple of months now. took a break from my current WIPs to just have fun and finally give this big ol' lady the reference she deserves!

enjoy some lore on ankethia :)

Ankethia is the respected leader and ancient of the secluded and mysterious clan of "Resting Blade". Located in the ruins of an abandoned moon, Ankethia had founded Resting Blade thousands of years ago as a sanctuary and a place of retirement for elderly warriors such as herself and provided asylum for travelers or warriors who needed it as well. Even some Bad Bloods have found a place at Resting Blade. Prior to founding her clan, Ankethia was dedicated to the hunt like many others.

In her prime, Ankethia was nothing short of a beast, a revered warrior known for slaying multiple Xenomorph queens alongside her wife, Mak'arhu. The two of them were an unconventional yet deadly duo. Unfortunately, Mak'arhu had succumbed to illness and died in Ankethia's arms. This did not deter her, however. Following the death of Mak'arhu, Ankethia set out on extinguishing an unknown amount of hives in memory of her fallen mate. She would hunt until her body told her that it was time to stop, until her heart was full and she was content.

Currently, Ankethia lives out the last of her days not in bloodshed and glory, but in peace and tranquility (and a little partying here and there!). Ankethia is quite the diva, preferring to live in luxury, gorging herself in home-brewed winery and only hunting when she wants a good meal. She ensures the same luxury for all those who seek refuge at Resting Blade.

Study Trick That No One Told Me.

Division of subjects:

Every subject is learnt and graded in a different way. You can't use the same study techniques for every subject you have. You have mostly 3 types of subjects:

Memorization based

Practical/Question based

Theory/Essay based

Memorization based:

Mostly Biology, Sciences, Geography etc are fully based on memorization and so you'll use memory study techniques like flash cards and active recall.

Practical/Question based:

Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Accountancy etc are practice subjects. The more you do your questions and understand how a sum is done, the better you can score.

Theory/Essay based:

English, history, business studies etc are theory based. The more you write, the way you write and the keywords you use are the only things that will get you your grades. So learn the formats and the structure on how to write your answers

Note: Some subjects are a combination of the three. Like Economics etc

The reason we divide the subjects is because you can adopt the right study methods for the right subject. Like ex: business studies is mostly based on how you write your answer and the keywords, if you're gonna spend your time memorizing in this, it's a waste of time and energy.

Writing Compelling Side Characters

**NOTE: Some of these tips don't really apply to ensemble casts, where there are multiple Main Characters (plural).

1) Agency - motivations, actions, effects

Technically, they ARE side characters in your MC's story, but don't base your writing on that fact.

Side characters need:

Their own REASONS for joining the story (because they want to, not because the PLOT wanted them to) Example: In Arcane, Caitlyn inadvertently gets involved with Vi due to her compassion and desire to help the undercity, not because the plot needs a love interest

A GOAL, on which they act INDEPENDENT of the plot, and actually affects your MC/the main plot (not the other way around) Example: In Loki, Sylvie's independent goal is to take down the TVA, and her actions reveal the TVA's corruption to Loki, influencing him to join her in fighting against the TVA instead of working for them

A STAKE in how things end (e.g. someone getting paid after agreeing to join a heist); they aren't just in it to be a "comic relief" or a "damsel in distress" Example: In Breaking Bad, Jesse joins Walt in cooking meth because he makes BANK from selling drugs, not because Walt needed a funny and traumatized sidekick

Their own RELATIONSHIPS with other characters, aside from the MC—they have their own friends, enemies, love interests, etc., and these relationships can completely change the plot Example: In the original Percy Jackson series, all of the side characters (e.g. Annabeth, Nico, Thalia, Luke, etc.) have their own relationships with each other that greatly affect the plot. Check it out: Annabeth's attachment to Luke, even after he became evil, completely changed the plot in several ways: kickstarting a journey to save her from Luke in The Titan's Curse, revealing his true evil identity as a vessel for Kronos (big bad!) in The Battle of the Labyrinth, and mainly contributing towards Luke's reversion away from evil in the last book due to him remembering his promise to take care of her a long time ago, etc.

Their own PAST that affects how they act, move forward, and how they treat the MC Example: In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Azula's pressure on herself and desire for perfection is greatly driven by her father's expectations of her as the fire-bending prodigy, resulting in a childhood of earning parental love and care AFTER she proves her worth to him. This created a mentality ceaselessly focused on her goals—which are usually her father's missions—causing her to be deadly, manipulative, and constantly causing problems for the main character.

The side character is not an extension or byproduct of the MC's plot; their own story happens to collide and intertwine with your MC's plot, but is ultimately independently driven.

2) Affecting the ending

The story can't have reached the same ending regardless of the side characters' existence. They must be necessary to the MC in helping them reach their goal faster, more prepared, etc. For example, in Avatar, Aang would not have been able to reach his goal of defeating the fire lord without the help of his friends, who each taught him valuable life lessons as well as combat skills.

Each character must have an independent impact on the MC—don't treat them like a group (e.g. "the side characters," who are one individual collective). Arcane does a great job with this, as each side character has a completely different impact on the MCs (e.g. Silco, Ekko, Caitlyn, and Vi—not a side character but for the purpose of this analysis, bear with me—all have a different impact on Jinx). It isn't just a literal impact. It's what the MC learns, and the theme of the story. They should help the MC realize things about themselves, and contextualize the MC by showing them in different situations with different people.

3) Avoid stereotypes Don't create characters from moulds and conform 100% to the trope: e.g. the "comic relief" can also be "the outlaw/rebel" or the "love interest," the "brooding antihero" can also be the "caregiver" or the "wise one," the "seductive girl" can also be the "science nerd" or the "broken optimist," etc. Mix and match. Everyone has more than 1 personality trait in real life, and probably fulfils more than 1 role to the other people in their lives. Give them intersecting personality traits to flesh them out.

4) Theme and Arc Especially compelling side characters have their own arc and embody their own theme.

Example 1: Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice is more than the brooding love interest—he develops by being less arrogant and learning to see people beyond their social status, and opens up to new ideas, people, and situations.

Example 2: Nico di Angelo from the Percy Jackson series goes on a journey of self-acceptance and embracing his identity, instead of just being the stereotypical emo kid who is constantly in a state of angst.

Example 3: In Arcane, Silco goes from a ruthless crime lord who believes that attachment is weakness, to someone who genuinely cares about his adoptive daughter, so much so that he can't give her up even in exchange for his lifelong dream.

Breaking Tradition: Crafting Your Own Witchy New Year Rituals 🌿✨🍲

Traditions are powerful, magical things—but they’re not set in stone. As witches, we thrive on intention, creativity, and personal connection, which means we have the freedom (and the power) to craft rituals and traditions that resonate with us on a deeper level.

For years, I struggled with the pressure to stick to family traditions I didn’t love—namely, eating black-eyed peas and collard greens every New Year’s for luck and prosperity. While I respect the meaning behind them, I can’t stand the taste and I don’t feel a connection to them. This year, my partner and I decided to break the mold and start something new: creating our own recipes that embody the same intentions but in ways that truly delight us.

Here’s what we’re doing instead:

• We’re choosing ingredients that symbolize abundance, growth, and luck, but swapping black-eyed peas and collards for things we love, like sweet potatoes, green beans, or even orzo (which feels like golden grains of prosperity).

• We’re cooking together, imbuing the process with love, laughter, and shared energy—because that’s what we want to carry into the new year.

• We’re building a tradition that reflects us and our values, blending magic, intention, and delicious food that we actually enjoy eating.

Why It’s Okay to Break Tradition:

Family traditions can be meaningful, but they’re not the only way to honor your roots or celebrate the season. Witchcraft is all about personal empowerment and aligning your actions with your intentions. By crafting your own traditions, you’re creating rituals that hold deeper meaning for you and your path.

A Witchy Recipe for New Traditions:

1. Start with Intention: What energy do you want to invite into your life this year? Abundance? Love? Joy? Build your meal around those themes.

2. Choose Ingredients That Speak to You: Find foods that symbolize your intentions but feel personal and enjoyable. For example:

• Sweet potatoes for prosperity and grounding.

• Green beans for growth and luck.

• Orzo or rice for abundance and wealth.

3. Cook with Magic: Stir clockwise to draw in positive energy. Speak your intentions as you add each ingredient. Light a candle while you cook to amplify your magic.

4. Celebrate Together: Share your meal with loved ones and infuse your space with gratitude and love.

Remember:

Tradition is what you make of it. Whether you love black-eyed peas and collards or you’d rather feast on something else, the magic lies in your intention and the joy you pour into the moment. Make it your own.
