"Dang, Mal, you've really scraped the bottom of the barrel with this one," Jayne said, looking down at the cage full of Jack Russell Terrier pups. "Although I heard there's some good eatin' on 'em for sure."

"Jayne! That ain't right!" Kaylee scolded, kneeling next to the big cage.

River giggled when one of the puppies licked her finger.

"Can taste freedom. Tastes like cornmeal."

Jayne glared at her, his hand straying to his gun.

"You keep yer mouth shut crazy-"

"Jayne, your mouth's moving. Might want to do somethin' 'bout that," Mal said, glaring at the merc. His eyes were hard and his hand was already on his gun.

Jayne threw Mal one last look before he stomped off, shouldering past Simon. The doctor glared at him before joining his sister at the cage.

"Wash!" Mal yelled to the pilot standing above him on the catwalk. "Set a course for Cassia. The client wants their goods before the week's out."

"And don't the rest of you have something else to do?" Mal added, looking at the group huddled around the crate.

The three kids shook their heads and turned back to playing with the yapping puppies.

Mal shook his head and slowly made his way to his bunk.

Sometimes the bottom of the barrel held all the treasure, Mal thought, gently patting Serenity's hull before he dropped down the ladder. Laughter sounded from the cargo bay and the Captain smiled. Just look at what it brought him.

Things have wound down at the saloon. The music stopped, most the patrons are gone or asleep hunched over a table, mug still in hand. There’s less of a “Whiskey River” and more of a dry riverbed. Looks like you’ve reached the Bottom of the Barrel, pardner. You stumble out into the street, the first tinges of dawn lighting the eastern sky. You’re not sure you remember the way home in this state, but maybe your horse will.

The Bottom Of The Barrel - Elle Greenaway/Clara Seger

A/N: Here it is, day 31 of @yeehawgust and we're finishing with some Western AU Criminal Minds.

“That’s it, the actual bottom of the barrel.” Clara murmurs. They’ve been surviving off rainwater from a barrel for a while now and with the drought, they’ve reached the bottom of their supplies. This, of course, means danger. They’ll have to ride into town, risk getting caught to get more. “Well, I could always…” “We.” Clara cuts her off quickly. “We can bring a new barrel back…” “What?” “Trust me…” Clara’s voice is soft. “They still want me back, right? So we fake like I’m coming back, empty their store and run for the hills.” Elle smirks then, agreeing slowly. They’ve never been huge fans of taking this kind of risk but she knows this time it will work. So they try, Clara acts innocent, sad, lonely and when she’s sure they have all the possible food and drinks stolen, she bolts, shooting down the few men who keep up before swinging up into the saddle behind Elle, the two drawing the cart away so quickly they are soon alone. They ride a while longer, out into the wilderness. Free at last.

Summary: Sheriff's deputy Haurchefant Greystone forms a bond with the handsome stranger who just rolled into town. The local clergy is less receptive.

Chapter Preview: Blood has seeped through his clothing. There isn’t much he can do for the deputy now, not unless he wants to start digging. Still, Aymeric waits. He doesn’t know what he’s waiting for.
