I'm reading Twilight for the first time and honestly it kinda sucks.
To preface, I love the Twilight Saga. The movies are a guilty comfort of mine. I love the town of Forks and the mysticism of it all, but, I'm only on chapter 3 and within these first 53 pages it has me wondering why anyone wanted this to be a movie adaption.
First of all, the pacing is very rushed. Stephanie Meyer admits that she has a hard time taking things slow in her writing. Such as the way of a Mormon, slow burns aren't their forte.
Second of all, she commits one of the worst mortal sins of bad writing: introducing too many characters within the first chapter. Why why why are we 30 pages in and I already know everybody at this damn high school. Everything is moving SO FAST (foreshadowing of the swiftness of the vampires?! I think not!)
Third of all, and this is a personal one, but I'm just not a fan of Meyers writing. It's incredibly simple with little depth.
I'm still going to keep reading it, though, for she does a decent job with the atmosphere of Forks. Makes me reminiscence about my own rainy days in high school. And of course because I do love the Twilight Saga.

Hi GT,
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I absolutely love the recs you've given (you've introduced me to tomione, and I love it!) and I was wondering if it's possible to give you some recs in return? There are some books and fics that definitely have dramione / got vibes, and I was wondering if I could share them with you!
So glad you've enjoyed them! Feel free to rec me anything you want. I've read most of the classic recs in terms of fic and adjacent content (Cruel Prince et al), but I'll try anything that's well-written. My tastes run towards weird and/or audaciously creative stuff, and I can forgive a lot of weaknesses in plot on the grounds of (1) ambition or (2) character work. My turnoffs are instalove, protagonists who can't fail, and most Y/A (I'm not a hater, I swear, I just need characters who can say "fuck" when their leg gets chopped off.)
I'm also a fan of weird and fucked-up dynamics.(Wuthering Heights was my favorite book for a while, and as a teenager I wrote an AU in which the book ends on a long sex scene where Heathcliff fucks Cathy's ghost and then immediately gets murdered by Catherine 2.) Obviously, I am very normal.
#greenteacup asks#my beef with Y/A is mostly expressed in a dissonance between tone and content#LOVE the content. dystopia fantasy horror sex and blood â awesome. but question. why are they all saying 'darn'?#like in the vampire diaries where they'll watch people get eaten and then 2 episodes later be like 'omg SCHOOL DANCE'#(EDIT: actually in fairness. on the vampire diaries. it was mostly just caroline that did that. unfair example my apologies)#& i distinguish this critique from a common bitch-and-moan complaint about tv shows being interested in 'girly' things#like relationships and social standing. that is not my complaint. that shit is delicious. i will chomp that shit for days#my issue is that when the stakes oscillate wildly from episode to episode and i can't tell what the main thing is#like sorry. a story with murder in it is always going to be about murder. you can't make it not about murder#unfortunately! many have tried.#and in general i have difficulty reading about teenagers bcâ#(she says having written 600k words about them OKAY I KNOW. i contain multitudes.)#because they're either mini-adults (preferred flavor. jude in the cruel prince nails this) or like leetol babies to me#and unless it's something like the hunger games where the Leetol Baby thing is part of the story#i'm like. hang on. you're 12 what are you doing here#percy jackson was hard for me to re-read as an adult for this reason#which is why they're enjoyable for teenagers! because as a teenager you DO feel like an adult#and you like reading books that treat you like one! nothing wrong with that! healthy even!#only then you get past the teenage years (mashallah) and you get stuff like twilight#where of COURSE bella doesn't think twice about 117 year old man falling in love with her#because he looks like a rich mysterious 17-year-old hottie#but you reread it later and it's like um well. that. could be explored a little more maybe.#i'm not even necessarily opposed to it. candidly. still team edward. i just think the dynamic should be more fucked up and juicy.#which Y/A authors are often reluctant to do. like. COWARDS! face the nasty consequences of your narrative decisions!#anyhow. you didn't ask for any of this. please give me your recs lovely person you seem very nice.

What book do you love but usually not recommend because itâs weird or intense, etc?
The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. I love the series, so much. But, it can be a tough read. It's very much a world of black and dark gray morality. I've read negative reviews that say the you only root for the protagonists because the villains are SO horrible, but in any other world, the protagonists would be antagonists at best, and villains at worst. And I... can't exactly argue with that. I adore them all. They are funny, and charismatic, and the relationship dynamics are incredible. But, the world they inhabit is not nice, and neither are they.
And there are some incredibly dark themes. Rape and murder and downright torture are prevalent. It's a really rough read at times.
But, man! When the SaDiablos and their extended "family" are together, it is so funny. And I love them all to bits.

Okay, Iâm going to go on a little tangent so I donât have to abbreviate for the comments and it can be all be on one place!
Since you watched tbosbas, I would recommend asking for the book since you said you liked the film! I have the Barnes & Noble cover and the circles around the bird and snake is this sort of metallic looking pink and purple color, it reminds me of Lucy Grayâs character so I think itâs really pretty I canât wait for break so I can finally dig into itâ I only read one chapter :â(
And since you said you like thriller and horror, I recommend Laura by Vera Caspary and In a Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes. I read these two for a class I took in which me read classic detective novels and their film noir adaptations!
Laura is a short one- under 200 pgs- set and written in the 40s, if I remember, about the modern, independent, and beloved Laura who is murderer (or is she?) and the detective who is assigned to her case; told in four perspectives (including the detective, her friend and mentor, her fiancĂŠ, and Laura herself); and had a twist on how the femme fatale is usually depicted in detective novels and film noir. I enjoyed both the book and the film of this one! Caspary is screenwriter as well so I feel like the images she drew through her words were very cinematic because of that. Every characters pov is so distinct and it makes it fun to read!
Now, In a Lonely Place. Not for the faint of hearts. A ďżźďżźpsychological thriller that is definitely if that is something youâre truly interested in. Very raw yet beautifully written piece despite its content, which I think made it more horrific. I remember learning that this was one of the first novels in which the author truly decided to dive into the physiological, internal aspect of the killer and why they do what they do because itâs told from the main characterâs perspectiveâ how easily he finds it to lie, his processes, habits⌠This one also has a cinematic feel to it in my opinion. Maybe not the kind of escapism you need, so maybe for one day and not now depending on how you feel, but I do find the characters really fascinating and especially the female characters as well since a lot of detective novels of the time would often write women as the ones who corrupt the male characters.
And the last one Iâll mention is Never Let Me Go. I actually havenât finished the book yet but the film is one of my favorites, beautiful and sad and extremely heartfelt. Definitely makes you reflect on your own life. It is dystopian, but leans into more of the coming-of-age aspect because itâs very much about the characters overall. I can explain what its about and why I might recommend but this is so long so Iâll digress for now. :â)
I actually bout tbosas already! Iâm excited to read it over break. Iâll definitely take a look at the your other recs! They sound right up my alleyđđ

Anyway I don't think it will take me as long to write so if you wanna read a chapter book about magic and girlhood and unicorns and other mythical creatures with bella sara vibes that's probs gonna be ready reasonably soon lol

Rodrick likes to think he's a pretty tough guy. Between being born and raised on the rebellious messages of pop punk music, and the nonconforming ideologies of emo and other alt subcultures, Rodrick knows in his bones that he'll never let the man break his spirit. He'll never bow down to someone just because they want him to do something. He's had countless opportunities to stand by these beliefs at school and at home, and he has never - not once - come close to doing anything for someone simply because they want him to. Rodrick has been confident in his ability to never give into other peopleâs orders, no matter how much they demand of him.Â
Until now.
âPretty please, RoddyâŚ?â You pout your glossy lips at him, blinking up at him and batting your doll like eyelashes, and thatâs all it takes to make him fold.
â...I guess, if you really-â Heâs cut off by an excited squeal from you, and heâs glad that youâre too distracted to notice him blush. Rodrick has never felt his willpower give in so fast, but as he watches you rush around your room and smile, delighted that heâd agreed, he realizes that heâd do pretty much anything you tell him too. Ben and Chris would call him a pussywhipped simp, but⌠no, thatâs pretty much it. He chuckles a little at the thought, watching the pile of stuff grow. He recognizes nail polish and tweezers, but thatâs about it.
âThank you thank you thank you!â You say, rambling happily as you settle down on your bed across from him. âIâve been wanting to do self care stuff but Iâve done so many everything showers and self care nights thereâs nothing left for me to do on myself. But youâŚâ
You take his face in your manicured hands, moving him around to inspect more closely.
âYou are in serious need of a facial.â
Rodrick doesnât really process what youâre saying, he just loves when you touch his face like that.Â
â...Uh, yeah totally.â He mutters absentmindedly, distracted by your sweet smell. After a moment, he processes what you said, and chuckles, leaning back into your silky pink pillows. âBabe, you can do anything to me, anywhere, anytime.âÂ
You giggle, feeling your face flush a little as you get all your stuff organized. Rodrick runs his hands up and down your waist, fidgeting with your soft fluffy pajama shorts and big loded diper shirt you wear all the time. He sees the little burn marks and worn out hems and realizes itâs the one you stole from him. He smiles softly, loving the way you look in it even more now. His attention is pulled back to you when you push something over his face, brushing his hair back. You adjust the fluffy cat ears on the headband, making sure you have access to his whole face. Rodrick giggles a little, knowing he must look a little out of place wearing a pierce the veil shirt and fluffy kitty cat headband.Â
âI donât think my forehead has been this exposed since like, 4th gradeâŚâ he chuckles.
âThatâs good, youâll have less sun damage that way.â You smile, putting some micellar water on a cotton pad. Itâs a little cold to the touch, but after a moment, the feeling of you gently wiping over his face and neck ends up being way more relaxing than he had expected it to. You throw it away, and he hears it land in your trash can with a crinkle.Â
âIâm gonna mist your face now, okay?â You say, and he nods. You spray rose water on his face, and Rodrick canât get over how considerate you are to give him a heads up like that. Rodrick smiles a little as he adjusts to the subtle floral smelling facial spray heâs used to smelling on you. He basks in the quietness of your room, opening his eyes as he watches you sitting on his stomach and looking for the next product. You hesitate for a moment. You feel like somethingâs missing, but you canât put your finger on it.
âOh,â you say, reaching for your phone as you remember. You open up Spotify, and put your favorite playlist on shuffle - the one you and Roddy share. Itâs full of both your favorite songs, mostly boiling down to early 2000âs pop punk and trashy pop. Itâs chaotic but really does suit you both perfectly. Rodrick smiles suddenly as he instantly recognizes the opening notes of Jesus of Suburbia begin to play. You take out your favorite serum, jasmine and blackberry hydrating jelly, and place a few drops around his face.Â
âWhatâs that one?â Rodrick asks, picking up another bottle.Â
âHyaluronic acid.â
Rodrick looks at the little dropper bottle.
âDoes it, like, melt the flesh right off your bones?âÂ
âNoâŚ?â You chuckle, massaging his cheekbones and jawline with your fingertips.
âThen why is it called hydroponic acid?â He asks rhetorically, âAcid is supposed to melt shit.â
You laugh again, and he makes a mental note to sample your laughter for a song at some point in the future. He doesnât know which one yet, but he knows it will be his best one yet.Â
You rub some cooling aloe vera gel into his skin, then take out your rose quartz gua sha stone. You tap your fingertips against his chest, and he looks at you with an amused smile.
âWhat does that do?â
He watches you work, eyes locked on you. He canât remember the last time he felt this relaxed and peaceful.Â
âIâm prepping your lymphatic drainage system.âÂ
That clarified absolutely nothing for Rodrick, but he trusts you implicitly. Youâre so good at so many things, but Christ, you could write a book on all that girly beauty stuff. Itâs way more hardcore than people think it is. You know about all these acids and drainage systems and the pink rock thing, and even though heâs impressed, heâs not at all surprised by how good you are at all this stuff.
You begin gently gliding your gua sha over Roddyâs skin, working from his forehead down to his neck and jawline. He stops talking as you work, and itâs like you melt all of the stress out of his body through his face. He could fall asleep with you touching him so gently like this. After a while you rub some more cream into his face, then place something under his eyes that feels like thinly sliced jello.
âWhat the fuck?â He asks, bringing another laugh out of you. He watches you take two more of the weird jelly things and put them under your own eyes.
âTheyâre under eye masks.â You answer with a chuckle. âThey hydrate your skin, depuff, and get rid of dark circles.â
âHuhâŚâ he hums in response, playing with the patches as they sit on his face.Â
Once youâve used half your arsenal of skincare products on him, you peel off his sheet mask and let him sit up. You hand him a mirror, and as he sits up and stretches a little, kind of wishing you had more to do, he feels like he just woke up from the best sleep of his life.Â
âSo? What do you think?â You ask excitedly. He canât help but crack a smile at how cute you are. Rodrick takes the mirror you offer him. When he sees his reflection, he almost doesnât recognize himself.Â
âOh my godâŚâ he says with a soft smile. Heâs glowing. He doesnât think heâs ever looked this soft and moisturized and⌠cared for before. He doesnât even have any crusty eyeliner from yesterday smudged around his eyes. He can never get it off all the way, but one wave of your magic wand, and itâs gone. He laughs again, touching his cheek. He looks up at you in surprise.
âMy face is so smoothâŚâ âI know!â You exclaim in delight. âSo, do you like facials after all?â
You have a feeling you already know the answer, but Rodrick looks up at you anyway.
âYeah,â he states, pulling you in for a kiss, his lips soft and exfoliated, topped with your favorite strawberry lip balm. You think Rodrick is right, it does taste better in a kiss. After he pulls away, it takes him a minute for his brain to stop short circuiting.Â
âSo⌠uh, are we doing this again next weekend?âÂ
You laugh at his hopeful tone of voice, how he raises his eyebrows a little.Â
âYeah.â You nod, taking him in for another kiss. You take his hands in yours, looking at the stick and poke tattoo he got of the heart you drew on his hand in chemistry class, his little calluses from drumming. âNext week I can do something about your cuticles.â

I put together a Tedromeda rec list for an anon ask of @spindrifters, and I figured it ought to be its own post! I like messy, imperfect, bordering on toxic Tedromeda, and I especially love lesbian!Tedromeda so if those are not your things you may not vibe with this rec list and that's ok! But if they are -
Turncoat: in defense of andromeda tonks nee black, @ink-splotch (8.3k)Â
âWhen her little cousin Sirius got disowned too, years later, Andromeda sent him a fruit basket.
This fic was so big and so brilliant and the world building is so excellent. It made me cry. I had to triple check the word count in putting it here because it seems so much longer because itâs just so rich with life and detail.Â
War, or Peace, or Whatever This Is, Slyboots (7.6k)Â
âFall in line, thatâs the way, and never mind who gives the orders. Carrying on, thatâs the British national sport.âIn the aftermath of the Fall of the Ministry of Magic, Andromeda Tonks does what little good she can.â
I love a war time fic with complicated world building and no good choices. Really brilliant fic. The sharp, fast moving pace adds to the paranoid anything-can-happen-at-any-moment feeling of a coup.
In Memoriam, Bitterfic on LiveJournal (6k)
âWhen he was young, brash, he had said that the Muggle-born were as good as any purebloods, yet he had never doubted that Andromeda Black was infinitely superior to him. Even after twenty-five years of marriage, he never thought of her by his name, as Andromeda Tonks. She was to him always Andromeda Black whose voice cut through the darkness that night in the Forbidden Forest.â (cw: sexual assault, suicidal ideation)Â
A brilliant haunting little fic from my favorite LJ writer from wayyy back in the day. Ted Tonks POV
Andromeda Liberata (133k+ WIP) (lesbian Tedromeda)Â
âIn which Andromeda Black cruelly betrays her sisters and sets in motion the total destruction of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black because she fell in love with a lesbian muggleborn.â
While it might be tacky to put your own fic in a rec list, Iâm quite proud of it :)
i donât forgive you (but please donât hold me to it) by evawrites (10k, T) (lesbian Tedromeda)
For Andromeda, the choice is not between the Dark and the Light. Itâs not between Headmaster Dumbledore and the Dark Lord, not between Teddyâs family and her own. Instead, itâs between Bella and Teddy. Foolishly, Andromeda prays sheâll get to keep both.(She gets to keep neither.)
Dark and haunting and the contrast between Bellatrix and Ted is so well set up.
history books forgot about us by spindrifters (25k, E)
Andromeda Black meets Ted Tonks quite by accident, and itâs something like mischief at first sight. From the lost papers and mixed-up files of the marginalia universe, the complete history of a relationship that was never meant to happen.
This canon-divergent universe is everything, and these two recklessly in love kids are everything to me!
wherefore/evermore by @leftsidedown (150 words, T)
continuing the Great Literary Tradition of mad women writing villanelles
A poem!!

And then some Andromeda-centric fic where Tedromeda is important but it's not really a shippy fic:
not like the rest of them by unspeakable3 (11k, T)
Sirius has recently followed in Andromeda's footsteps and emancipated himself from their family. This afternoon, the two cousins will reunite - and see each other for the first time in four years. Andromeda is nervous. Sirius is nervous. There is a lot they need to say to each other.
Imperfect runaways!!
we were sisters once (we have another love now) by Nefaria_Black (3k, T)
Dora is six and few things are more exciting than a day spent in Diagon Alley. Even if the street is packed with people. Even if sheâs separated from her parents by the crowd Because Mother is easy enough to find, isnât she?
Haunting fairytale vibes
The Waves by nanneramma (3k, M)
Andromeda is not sure if she got it right. But she tried.
Gorgeous canon-compliant character study

And for those who like some Blackcest with their Tedromeda:
Clip, Ravel, Cleave by @vdoshu (15k, E)
Before Andromeda met Ted, she was a Black, through and through. While years later the story was told that sheâd turned her back on her familyâs dark ways, in truth, nothing was so simple. In the beginning, it was just Andromeda and Bella. And it was just the two of them until it was too much.
An all-time favorite featuring Andromeda and Ted meeting after Hogwarts and dark magic addiction and all sorts of dark goodness
