Hangman is cominâ down from the gallows, and I donât have very long.
In which Tyler is smitten with a certain girl and Jake does what he does best: annoy people.
Warnings: foul language
Note: Tyler refers to Bradley only as Rooster while Jake calls him by his name or Roo, this was a detail i didnât notice until I was half way through writing this. The things I do to myself.
Tags: @devil-angel-winchester
Song: renegade by Styx

â ââââ
Jake licked his teeth and clicked his tongue as he oh-so-casually slid up next to his brother, boxing Tyler into the booth at the old country diner theyâd crowded into somewhere in central Oklahoma.
âSo⌠Kate, huh?â Jakeâs grin stretched from ear to ear, his eyes gleaming with mischief.
Tyler shot him a sidelong glance, trying to ignore the growing heat in his cheeks. âWhat about Kate?â
Jake leaned in closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. âCome on, Ty. I see the way you look at her. Itâs not just friendly banter about tornado chasing.â
Tyler shifted uncomfortably, trying to deflect. âItâs not like that. We just work togetherâweâre partners, you know, with the polymer project. And sheâs been through a lot with storm chasing. Iâm just trying to keep things light-hearted and professional.â
Jake raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. âLight-hearted and professional? Thatâs why you practically trip over your words whenever sheâs around? And donât think I didnât catch how you went all sweet southern boy when Bradshaw and I first got here.â
Tyler stiffened and gave his twin a glare, irritated by how well Jake read him. It was a talent Jake had always had, and it never failed to get under Tylerâs skin.
âYou were buttering yourself up to make yourself look good in front of her,â Jake continued, his smirk growing. âIt was almost sickening how thick you laid it on. Bradley had to take a walk when you two went to look at the radar. I thought he was going to throw up!â
Tylerâs face reddened. âThatâs exaggerating, Jake. I was just trying to be supportive. Itâs not like I planned to impress anyone.â
Jakeâs grin widened, clearly relishing his brotherâs discomfort. âOh, come on. We both know you were laying it on super thick. Iâve seen you try to play it cool before, but this? This was next-level. And Iâm not saying it was a bad thingâbut holy shit, Ty.â
Tylerâs face was practically streaming with embarrassment. He silently thanked whatever higher power had distracted Kate and the others. The only one left in their booth was Rooster, who was looking equally uncomfortable.
âRight, Roo?â Jake decided to rope the other man into the conversation, clearly enjoying Tylerâs discomfort. âYou saw it, right?â
Rooster shifted uncomfortably, glancing between the two brothers. He clearly tried to avoid getting involved but failed as Jakeâs sharp eyes fixed on him.
âNo comment,â Rooster said, and Tyler silently thanked him for trying to steer the conversation away.
âWhatever,â Jake clicked his tongue and narrowed his eyes, then turned his full attention back to Tyler. âIâve never seen you so smitten! Never! She really must be something.â
Tyler bit his tongue, struggling to keep from spilling all the reasons he thought Kate was amazing. He knew that would only dig him deeper into Jakeâs teasing.
âBut I like her! I think Ma and Dad will, too,â Jake said and finally relented, for now. He slid back from his brother and returned to his seat next to Rooster.
The timing was impeccable because, just then, Kate walked into the booth area with a radiant smile and a lively energy that made Tylerâs heart skip.
Jakeâs eyes sparkled with mischief as he noticed the effect Kate had on Tyler. His Cheshire smile broadened, clearly enjoying this.
Tyler knew Jake wouldnât let him live this down.
Bonus Rooster and Kate:
âIs he always like this?â Kate said from atop the red rig, her sunglasses shielding her eyes from the harsh Oklahoma sun. Bradley was handing her the new sensors, both of them squinting against the glaring light.
Bradley didnât need to look to know what she meant. He let out a sigh. âAnnoying? Always.â
It was a dry joke, and Kate snorted, giving the side of the sensor a quick, unceremonious smack to adjust it.
âJakeâs got this knack for finding everyoneâs soft spots and poking at them. Itâs his way of keeping things interesting,â Bradley continued. He was used to it by now, but he could understand how aggressive it might seem to others.
Kate raised an eyebrow, clearly processing this. âSo, itâs not just me heâs targeting?â
Bradley shook his head. âNope. He picks on everyone, but Tylerâs the one heâs focused onâsibling things, I guess? I donât know, I was an only child.â
Bradley got sidetracked, waving his hand dismissively as he handed her another sensor.
âAnyways, you just got caught in the crossfire. Trust me, itâs not malicious. Jake just found something he could tease Tyler about and went with it.â
Kate took the sensor with a nod, her expression easing. âGot it. Iâll just stay still and hope he wonât see me.â
She and Bradley shared a laugh at the lame pop culture joke.
Bradley grinned. âNo problem. And if Jake gets to be too much, just let me know.â
Kate smiled and nodded as they returned to their work. With Bradleyâs reassurance, she felt more prepared to handle Jakeâs playful jabs.
But that didnât stop her own teasing side from rearing its head. âSo, is like âwingmanâ the Navy term for boyfriend?â
Bradley choked on his spit.

The crew listens to Epic: the Musical.
MK's favorite song is Legendary.
Wukong identifies with Just a Man (not that he'll admit it).
Macaque likes Ruthlessness because he's an emo little stinker.
Sandy likes Open Arms (of course).
Tang and Red Son like Warrior of the Mind.
Pigsy really thinks the monkeys should take Luck Runs Out to heart.
Mei likes Keep Your friends close (a fun bop that belies danger underneath, just like her).
I have to be careful binging a new muscial (or in this case Saga) cus I end up playing each song on loop for hours. Opinions might change once the full and finished versions of later sagas are released.
I love all these hcs <3
Im imagining the gang likely sees/listens to Epic on the reccomendation of MK (who's currently on a Greek Mythology hyperfixation), and he gets them all to watch the full play - maybe in the future as a irl performance or film.
"Legendary" is SUCH an MK song. Both him and Telemachus growing up with the stories of someone dear to them and wanting to replicate their success. I could also see him really liking "Warrior of the Mind" with the theme of "some nobody" gaining the favor of a god (reminds you of anyone?) + SWK is infamously the personification of The Mind in Jttw so its a bonus. MK is smiling evily whenever a harsh plot twist occurs and his fam are shocked silent. >:3
Sun Wukong feels targeted personally with how many of the Epic songs remind him of his past. Ofc he starts crying halfway through "Horse and the Infant", and is inconsolable during "Just A Man" - verbally yelling "NO!" at the end. And like Nezha and Sandy is *silent* during Posideon's songs. Is super jazzed during the triumphant Ithaca Saga though! And feels mega catharic during "King" when Odysseus proves that he still rules to the suitors! He tries his best to hide how much the muscial is affecting him.
Macaque is a canon theatre Nerd - so he's already listened to the musical multiple times, but he's uber excited to see the live performance (and secretly bond with his found fam). Is rocking out during "Ruthlessness" and "Done For" in particular, so much so that he's fidgeting and dancing within his seat. He also vibes with "No Longer You" as someone with powers of prophecy. Is really amazed how much Wukong gets into the musical, but in retrospect understands *why*. Him and Wukong accidentally share a glance during "Would You Fall In Love With Me Again" and it gets a little awkward afterwards.
Mei is similarly excited to see anything with her bestie, so she tried her best not hear/see any spoilers ("it's a centuries' old story Mei" "Ssssh!! Dont tell me!"). She was shooketh by how hard the muscial goes. "Keep Your Friends Close" is her fave based on beat alone. She gets delightedly scared and amazed by consistent horse imagery used with Posideon (shameless link to my fave Animatic of "Ruthlessness").
Tang loves himself some historical and mythological adaptations, and is estatic that MK has given him an excuse to go see one! He's not as familar with Hellenic mytholgy as he is with Hindu-Chinese, but he knows enough lore to make the pog-champ face at every foreshadowing/reference. "Warrior of the Mind" really gets to him as a song about valuing your smarts. He also feels really empathetic for Calypso.
Pigsy only went cus Tang begged him. He feels super lost by the deep Greek lore he's missing, but he can get Odysseus's whole thing with trying to get home - but he def identifies more with Eurylochus. "Luck Runs Out" proves this to him. Later on he feels that the second-in-command was justified in having the soldiers rebel against Odysseus after so many losses (who wouldn't after losing all their friends?). Audibly gasps at the end of "Just A Man" - cus who would just do that!? Is a little freaked out by Circe turning the Athenian's into pigs - Eurylochus is depicted as partly-transformed, played by a pig-demon actor who was in super convincing human makeup in the previous sagas. He also gets protective feelings by-proxy seeing Telemachus's situation since the prince reminds him of MK. Is surprised by how much he likes the musical!
Sandy feels betrayed. This isn't like Disney Hercules at all! He does really enjoy Polites message in "Open Arms" and the later moments when the hopeful soldier's outlook is proven correct. He's a little overwhelmed at points though - he get eerily quiet during Posideon's scenes. He sobs joyfully when Odysseus finally makes it home and reunites with his family! :')
Because of this really good animatic/almost child-like depiction of Aelous by gigi; I can def see "Keep Your Friends Close" being Nezha's fave. It reminds Nezha of when he was far more carefree + has a solid lesson on about trust/"forbidden fruit". He also enjoys the more march-like tune of "Survive". He does however, freeze when he listens to Posideon's songs "Ruthlessness" and "Get in the Water" - he has been on the bad end of a sea god before and is quietly shtting himself for Odysseus.
Red Son goes in feeling like he could have stayed at home listening to the musical on his phone while working on a car instead. He is however blown away by the heavy themes and performances, especially "Warrior of the Mind" and Telemachus's situation - a prince forced to grow up fatherless and protecting his mother from suitors due to his dad pissing off a higher power? Hello?? Accidentally shrieks "YES!!!" when Athena becomes Telemachus's mentor/friend after "Little Wolf".
Princess Iron Fan I could see loving any song including Penelope (she empathizes with the Queen's situation hard), but unexpectedly enjoys "Keep Your Friends Close" - she's a fellow Wind Goddess at her core. It also reminds her of her not-so-little-anymore nephew.
DBK on the flip side loves the heavier songs like "Polyphemus" and "Ruthlessness". This man is a Posedion apologist. He does feels bad for Odysseus by the end though - man just wants to get back to his wife and kid dammit!
Bonus: The Spider Gang are watching the bootleg and Spider Queen agrees with Circe's whole girlboss attitude especially "Puppeteer". Scorpion Queen is Calypso in "Not Sorry For Loving You".
This got a little away from me - hope you enjoy!

In Defense of Lady Kang/Queen Sindeok (1/3)
As promised, here's the first part of my defense of Queen Sindeok, explaining her historical political situation + clearing up some common fandom misconceptions about her, which I don't blame anyone for since they originate from the show itself. I must admit that I have a bit of a soft spot for her since history generally tends to be unkind to women - this extends to modern media and MCTNA is no exception:
(more under the cut)
Before we start, I thought I'd give a small refresher on the Yi family constellation - crucial for setting up the conflict and crown prince issue - with the aid of this extremely useful graphic by bodashiri (excluding the daughters for simplicity's sake):
(From here: x)
As you can see, Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo of Joseon) had two wives:
His first wife Lady Han (Queen Sinui) gave birth to six sons: 1. Yi Bang-woo (Prince Jinan), 2. Yi Bang-gwa (Prince Youngan), 3. Yi Bang-ui (Prince Yikan), 4. Yi Bang-gan (Prince Hoean), 5. Yi Bang-won (Prince Jeongan) and 6. Yi Bang-yeon (Prince Deokan).
His second wife Lady Kang (Queen Sindeok) gave birth to two sons: 7. Yi Bang-beon (Prince Muan) and 8. Yi Bang-seok (Prince Uian),
meaning that Seong-gye had eight sons overall.
With that out of the way, let's get started!!!
1. Queen Sindeok was NOT a concubine
(From here: x)
She is referred to as Yi Seong-gye/King Taejo's capital/Seoul wife in the show too:
However, every time Bang-won calls her a concubine and her children illegitimate there is never any pushback or correction by anyone, not even when he calls her younger son Bang-seok/Prince Uian a âseojaâ (illegitimate child born to a commoner concubine or royal concubine) in front of Seon-ho:
You'd think Seon-ho would defend Bang-seok by correcting Bang-won... but nope. Nada.
Not even Queen Sindeok (!!!) is allowed to defend herself and her children when they get accused of the same:
Like, what is this madness!!!
Anyone who doesn't know about Korean history would never even SUSPECT that this isnât actually true, and that Queen Sindeok is in fact a legitimate second wife and queen. By giving no pushback to the (false) claims of illegitimacy, the show seems to implicitly support Bang-wonâs narrative of her being a lying, conniving, greedy bitch who wants to push her child on the throne despite having no right to it whatsoever as a concubine and bastard respectively.
Queen Sindeok's tragedy, the one that MCTNA fails to portray, is not that she was a concubine who tried to rise above her station (because she was not); it's that, due to the transition from Goryeo to Joseon, she found herself caught between two conflicting sets of laws:
(From Tombstones without a Tomb by Hildi Kang)
A queen while alive, and unjustly demoted to a concubine in death by Bang-won/King Taejong who used these legal changes and the new Confucian ruling to his advantage, her status was a matter of contention for scholars and kings alike for almost 300 years, until finally, in 1669, the scholar Song Si-yeol managed to amass enough people and put enough pressure on King Hyeonjong to make him give in to their demands and restore Queen Sindeok to her rightful status and honor as queen.
+ Bonus:
(From Tombstones without a Tomb by Hildi Kang)
Turns out that according to the new Confucian ruling, Bang-won himself should have been considered illegitimate too!! Surprise!!!

As someone who has experienced both The Caligula Effect and Milgram, which Milgram characters do you consider most likely to be in the Go-Home Club and Musicians respectively?
Hm, this is a really difficult question...
Mostly because Milgram and the Caligula Effect franchise are different on very fundamental levels.
So, here's the short answer no spoilers or long explainations-
Musicians: Haruka, Shidou, Mahiru, Amane, Kotoko. Go Home Club: Yuno, Futa, Mu, Kazui, Mikoto.
As a bonus-
Aria: Jackalope Îź (Mu)/Regret: Es
Long post with a lot of reasoning and other stuff beneath. Spoilers for the Caligula Effect games under the cut.
Now why is this difficult?
This is because Caligula Effect has a focus on rehabilitation and bettering oneself from their past experiences. As well as a focus on building better communication skills all while meeting people where theyâre at and looking at oneâs own actions more objectively.
While on the other hand Yamanaka has gone on record stating that Milgram isnât about rehabilitation not only within the text itself but outside of it.
Amane's First Voice Drama
Don't make me laugh. I'm not your teacher at school; it isn't my goal to teach you things or guide you on the right path.
This can be taken as a bit of cheeky nod towards Caligula Effect something Amane's voice actress also worked in. Since that takes place within a school setting. It is still highlighting this is not that though.
Highlighting that once again guidance, learning from one's mistakes, and receiving the proper help to thrive is completely antithetical to Milgram's goals. Something that many people who have played Caligula Effect would recognize Yamanaka understands very well and is capable of portraying that sort of character growth in ways while still not always correct are far more kinder and encouraging of progress than Milgram will ever be.
Because this is Milgram; it's not about the characters finding closure or becoming better versions of themselves. It's about sin and judgment- Crime and punishment. Sinners and executioners. This is reiterated in the first novel to an extent as well.
Outside of that canon statement- Yamanka stated on the Milgram App early into the series that there are no connections between Milgram and Caligula Effect,
Source: Maristelina (MILGRAM Timeline Master Document)
It's a completely new world.
Side note it is very fun seeing the creator comments within that doc. My favorite of trial two these several for personal reasons- I will be analyzing these forever actually.
Really like how Deco just points out "I wanted to be loved like a cat" perfectly embodies Kazui's character. I love how with the discussion of Purge March it's the second time a prisoners ideology has been referred to so bluntly. The third one is just like yeah tell me the obvious one more time baby!
Also the way Deco highlights paying attention to the tone in It's Not My Fault is just really good too-
Like,
"Listen closely to the subtle inflections in the vocals."
This is something that has also been discussed when it comes to the musician covers of the their songs in Caligula Effect Overdose. It is something showcased very well in Stork's self-cover of Lovescope. Using him as the example here because he shares a voice actor with Shidou and I need to spread the cursed knowledge.
So, fans of Caligula Effect do have an unfair advantage when it comes to Milgram because they'd be more used to how Yamanaka and to an extent Deco create a narrative through the use of music.
Also these may be my favorites but all of the comments regarding the songs on the app are very informative and I would recommend giving them a look over if anyone has the time.
This is just turning into advertising this Google Doc at this point. Go read it. It's great and informative. I really like it. It's well put together and easy and sift through. Plus have multiple translations to compare and contrast allow me to get a clearer idea of the situation as someone who's always had an issue with comprehending text.
But back on track- Yamanaka told the Milgram audience from the beginning that these two franchises had nothing to do with one another. This may have been done in attempt to avoid others falling victim to the assumption that Milgram would handle these topics in similar ways to Caligula Effect.
However, a writerâs creations will always hold their own unique touch within them. Something that can give people a glimpse into how the creator presents a topic or what topics a creator may enjoy putting a spotlight on. Something that may not only be pertinent to one of their works but others as well.
Attentive observers may very will become acutely aware of a creators style and creative habits over time. The audienceâs ability to do this with a creators work is ultimately what creates a fandom around those works. It may very well do the opposite at times too. Since at times people will understand the point that a creator is trying to make through their creation agree or disagree with that point and still hate the execution.
Or even that the point was illustrated at all depending on the viewers subjective biases.
In the old,
"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink."
way.
So, regardless of how unrelated to Milgram Deco's and Yamanaka's past works are. They'll always be related through the fact that they share creators alone despite what the creators have to say on the matter. That's just one of the pitfalls of creating a lot of things in general there are bound to be comparisons of those things.
For example like the way Hao wound up being compared to Salamander.
Things like this are going to happen. Comparisons of ones creations with their other ones or even to the works of others are going to continue to occur even if someone tries to get ahead of it which Yamanaka did that was him getting ahead of it.
Even still comparisons are things people commonly make as well as how many individuals engage with and analyze the information in front of them. So, yes regardless of how often one says certain things are not related to each other if they are in close proximity to one another connections will wind up being made. People are going to be able to relate it back to something said creator made in the past or even works completely unrelated to the creator that predate or succeed the work being compared.
However, it still matters and is a indisputable fact that these things are completely unrelated to one another and treating them as they could be would stop people from enjoying Milgram in the way it was intended to be enjoed.
It's still fun to think about despite that. I do believe it is important to note that the this is not the intended viewing experience. Like one of the creators bluntly stated so.
Just as Yamanaka also stated many of times that the cover songs have nothing to do with the story. They just pick whatever best suits the character or would be fun.
Source: Yamanaka's Marshmallow
Other fun things of note,
Either way, the prisoners covering these songs have nothing to do with their murders. It's a fun fanservice kind of like special tailored karaoke.
Yuno didn't decide to do what she did one day simply because she went and sung Vampire. This is a given no one is saying that's what occurred here. Yet, it's still fun to delve into what this says about the prisoners character in the same way people think,
"Hm I wonder what my favorite song says about me." It's just a neat thing.
No one's saying,
"Oh, because so and so covered this that means this is their crime."
However, once these songs have been related to the characters and franchise in some way people are going to want to think about why. Especially since Milgram is a series that's prone to having bursts of content and then none for long stretches of time.
Discussing the covers is just another way to lengthen the discussions fans can have around the series during said downtime.
Observable writing quirks/tendencies.
It's the same with discussing the Caligula Effect series.
Because the more one knows about Caligula Effect the easier it becomes to see the similarities between the characters within it and the ones within Milgram. Even if at times those similarities can be incredibly surface level.
Like got damn Yamanaka how many times are you going to create characters that are cops?
I don't care if Kazui may be lying about everything it's still like three times at most and two at best my guy. There's only two Caligula Games- In both someone is a cop. We're two for two. That's already two too many. If there's a third game chances are high there will be another cop.
Like at that point it's a bit of writing pattern despite how unrelated these things are. I'm just gonna throw that out there.
That's not even touching on both series using Es within their naming conventions. Caligula Effect taking place in Metaverse-Es and the prisoner guards within Milgram being referred to as Es. Both stories relying on music when it comes to displaying the mentalities of certain characters.
Given all of those points, it's a little unsurprising Caligula Effect would have characters on both sides of its cast that would be reminiscent of the prisoners in some way to those familiar with Milgram.
For example Shogo displays his regret similarly to how Kazui does. Something that leads me to speculate that to an extent the suicide framing of his sin is a projection of Shogo's storyline onto Kazui's character. Since that's a part of his narrative.
So, when I run into the idea of any of the prisoners murders not being direct murders that are a consequence of their mentalities and choices. Something that Jackalope blatantly tells the viewer,
"The fact of having committed murder in their lives is a direct result from the thoughts each espoused and their individual environments."
Yet, instead their murders are indirect deaths or suicides caused through negligence/just their everyday mannerisms. As well as when the prisoners situations are presented as very abstract themes that wouldn't count as murder unless someone had a very serious issue with conflating minor inconveniences to extreme grievances.
I just want to do some equivalent of this-
Because that's just these games really. I even went as far as to describe Caligula Effect as the Barney version of Milgram to a friend. It's like babies first interaction with cruelty and the concept of people being assholes.
It's never really as extreme as Milgram can get except when it comes to Overdose exclusive characters. Still all the games manage to get the point across. This is why I find it very easy to find comparisons between the prisoners and the Caligula cast.
The easiest characters to make comparisons to off the top of my head being #QP and Mahiru. A more difficult to catch one in my opinion would be the similarities between Machina and Shidou- Since from what I have heard Shidou tends to be compared to Doktor more so.
I believe this is because like with Kazui it's really easy to compare the prisoners to other characters they seem to share a profession with. It just gives a good jumping off point to work from.
I tend to lean more towards comparing him to Machina because both his first glitched voice line and Triage put on full display to me that his first run in with death may have been the death of his family members later in life. So much later in fact that he couldn't even fully understand what he was having people reckon with until it happened to him. The fact that Shidou is like this from the start ultimately leaves an avenue for Kotoko's stance to have some credibility regardless off if she was found Guilty from the jump or not.
Since Shidou is a walking example of how sometimes the only way for certain people to learn that what they're doing is wrong is by experiencing it for themselves.
"[cackling] Not dead... Yeah, she's definitely not dead... I finally understand the value of what I've been robbing people of."
This comparisons can wind up lead to relating Shidou to Sasara a member of the Go Home Club who's heavily associated if not thematically paired with Machina. Someone else who despite being the eldest in 2 is just now coming to terms to death as she has to come to terms with the end of her life. Very similarly to Shidou she doesn't really grasp it before this because she didn't really have to face it head on in this way before and thought very little of it.
It's not as though she has any regrets either. Her life is fine. In fact the only reason she's here is because she just wanted to live her life over. Not because she regretted anything in particular it was just so good she wanted to do it again.
In contrast Machina has been reckoning with the concept of death from a far younger age. It's implied that he quite recently lost a family member to it and has been stricken with a fear of death since that incident. Wishing to become a cyborg in order to avoid it and not being able to reckon with the fact with every breath taken we all move ever closer to our own inevitable demise.
His song having choice Shidou esque lines such as-
"I wished for those days to remain idyllic. I wished for the power to protect them. Even if it costs me everything I have."
And the remix starting with the repeated spiraling line of-
"I can't stand it, I can't stand it, I can't stand it. I can't stand it, I can't stand it, I can't stand it. I can't stand it, I can't stand it- I can't stand it what a tragedy it is to be doomed to death at birth."
While the regular version begins with,
"Once you draw your last remaining breath even memories you have clung to will scatter into ash. As I realize what a curse a beating heart is the mourners gather and laugh at a hollow coffin."
Machina is at the most of middle school age. This kid was just going through it. Don't believe me here's what the game said on it outside of the song,
In his first year of middle school, his grandmother passed, profoundly impacting his views on mortality.
Machina was not particularly close with his grandmother. Though she spoiled him as a child, he began talking to her less and less as he grew into an adolescent. She passed soon thereafter, marking the first time an immediate relative had died.
Machina became so afraid of death that he couldn't even breath without being in mortal terror of his own inevitable decay at the hands of death itself.
As he continued to study death, he learned about a structure in human cells known as "telomeres."
Telomeres are shortened every time a cell divides. Once they fall below a critical limit, new cells can no longer form, spelling death.
In other words, even just the mere act of existence marches one toward an inexorable end.
It's a simple fact, really. No matter how meaningfully one lives, how happy they are, or how carefully they avoid harm and injury, as long as their cells continue to divide, they too will die. Upon realizing that human life was but a one-way ticket with a final destination, Machina fell into the depths of despair.
Though he knew it was a fool's errand, he would hold his breath and try to stay in bed, living life with as little activity as possible in hopes it would keep death at bay, if even slightly.
He stopped going to school, and was beset by panic attacks each night.
I want to feel âaliveâ, is it ok if I breathe?
The answer for Machina was,
No, it's not.
Because to breath is to die a million small deaths as your cells divide as though counting down to the end of your lifespan. Like a cursed hourglass full of cells instead of sand.
Which wouldn't be applicable to any other thing ever actually,
Nope not one thing this can be applied to.
A times it's pretty easy to draw comparisons between these two series. Even outside of the fact both creators Milgram worked on these games. Deco making the song Love Scope for Stork in Caligula Effect Overdose.
Whether the character the prisoners are compared to is a musician or a Go Home Club member matters very little. This is because within Caligula the Go Home Club Members and the Musicians generally parallel each other in some ways anyhow. So comparing a prisoners to any of them will inevitably lead to comparing them to someone else in the series.
Plus, the cast in Caligula tends to be visually paired off in a way that helps that stand out more. As well as in ways that most Milgram fans would be familiar with. Such as youngest and oldest which is the case with Sasara and Machina.
However, Milgram fans should be familiar with this since itâs used again in Milgram with Kazui and Amane.
In Caligula Effect Yamanaka uses the juxtaposition of these characters ages to discuss the concept and fear of death. Something that does wonders as it highlights how someone at the end of their life displays their fear of death by trying to rush towards it as though that gives them anymore control over it occurring while someone younger will try to avoid it even if that avoidance hinders them from truly living.
In either case the fear is still there and very real. If not incredibly debilitating in some or most ways.
Due to the nature of Caligula Effect where there are no wrong parties only wrongs being done.
Don't get me wrong there are some objectively in the wrong parties within the narrative. In fact every character here is objectively wrong at some point. I believe some people like to trick themselves into believing the characters in Caligula Effect Overdose were the worst of them and the ones in two are so much better actually.
Yet, the ones within two are also terrible. They're just tentatively politically correct while being terrible.
Which is a very superficial way to define if someone is a bad person. On top of that they don't remain politically correct at all times either.
Everyone's Bad Here
Firstly this series is named Caligula Effect. The Caligula Effect is a term used in Japan to describe the desire to do something that is forbidden or socially unacceptable.
Source: Den Faminico Gamer interview with The Caligula Effect producer Takuya Yamanaka (The DigiLab)
Given that it should be no surprise that none of the behaviors or mannerisms displayed in either of these games are meant to be viewed a admirable or healthy. The character discussed in this answer is from Caligula Effect Overdose though.
So let's turn it back to the second games cast real quick. Remember how in the previous segment I stated they don't remain politically correct. Well that's because some of them are really ableist which I've never seen discussed outside of Doktor. I definitely believe it should be because like one of the Go Home Club members is ableist too.
Just blatantly. So, like actually...
This character literally tells the player yeah killing someone is better than letting them live with a possible physical disability. Like just blatantly agrees with Doktor. I guess they get a pass because internalized ableism is a thing though. Even if it's internalized it's still fucking ableism. I mean just because someone points it at themselves too doesn't make them better than any other fucking ableist- But okay.
This is the space to work on yourself this isn't about crime and punishment. This isn't about sin.
You know for me personally- if it's between using a mobility aid and being in the fucking ground... Um, ya know my pride ain't high enough to think the latter is better and more respectable. Call me ignorant but I'd rather be alive with some difficulties than dead.
This isn't the worst thing characters in Caligula Effect have done by the way.
Some of them are murderers too. Not just one of them multiple of them are murderers and attempted murderers. Yet, if we stay here all day talking about what murderers in the Caligula Effect series are forgivable in the eyes of the audience and which are not- Iâm gonna end up writing a tangent thatâs devolves into Marie is basically Eiji but a girl, more impoverished (Eiji was born into a finacially well off family his father was a lawyer with a law firm), different diagnosis (Eiji's issue is labeled as Psychopathy and Marie's Sociopathy in Caligula Effect Overdose) didnât get kidnapped (had abusive family instead barring her grandma who was not abusive canonically), and happened to get a redemption arc (because she wasn't killed by a Final Destination style rube goldberg machine of shenanigans out of the clear blue fucking sky that wound up saving the life of another character that fell off a twenty story building).
I feel like I have the right to be mad actually.
Oh while also not having ableism imposed upon her characterization in a way that demonized and vilified her. She got hit with the we need to put you out off your misery ableism not the we need to spare ourselves from the misery of knowing people like you exist ableism. So, we're going to frame this as though there's something uniquely evil and fucked up about you actually and everyone else here is super normal. In fact some of them could tell you were evil just from the look in your eyes. You had the eyes of a snake not a normal person.
Oh, but it gets worse.
Marie canonically killed multiple people, abducted others, locked the first Go Home Club in a room for three days at a point only giving them cough drops before giving them drugged food-
Star here! Something to be noted; when this first happened, Gunsli enjoyed Marie doing this-
Gunsli : That is true when this first happened this was fine I very much enjoyed it. I was all for it really. That was before listening to people defend or outright ignore the things she did because,
"She was always really good deep down. I always knew it! Because I'm a great judge of character and I could never like an evil fictional character because what would that say about me? My fragile ego wouldn't be able to take it. I'd be crushed and it would be the works fault for tricking me. So she needs to be good because that's the only way for me to know I'm good."
Look past your ego it's really never that deep.
Liking an evil character- A fictional construct is fine as long as that like is not negatively impacting reality. Put the mirror down. Sometimes a character being bad and a person liking said character anyway doesn't reflect on that person at all unless they make it reflect on them which is their choice to.
Also, like... No she wasn't clearly good deep down, no one saw that ahead of time, most fans didn't even play these games in order. Or read the light novel where it basically states people saying your past doesn't matter are ignorant.
Back to the other things she did not that we've touched on that light novel- Attempted to push the one person who trusted her down a flight of stairs, framed another person that trusted her misleading their friends into believing they had betrayed them. Ruined countless friendships for her personal enjoyment in and outside of Mobius. She was doing that like she was trying to win the gold in shit starting. Marie was in that bitch like this when it came to instigating.
While Eiji, to the stories own admission, never kills anyone with his with his own hands. Now hold on before you start thinking what the hell- Eiji Biwasaka is still a terrible person too. He believes there's no way men and women can just be friends (wink-wink , nudge- nudge he texts this to the protagonist by the way). Is heavily implied to be in love with the protagonist in subtle ways like many characters in the series are. This isn't a crime just fun to note because if the protagonist takes the betray route and he's there he is genuinely upset. How do I know this?
I kept him alive because I wanted to see his reaction when I did it. Moving forward.
He's mostly upset that the protagonist didn't let him in on it which is funny and fair. Then genuinely enraged by the betrayal and is like you have to die now for pulling one over on him. Which again aww you- stay mad about it. He gets egregiously upset at the protagonist trying to get to know him on a deeper level and is acutely angered by criticism or being told what to do in any capacity.
Literally any form consequence for his actions he does not take kindly.
He tries to attack Kuchinashi. Almost hitting her with his catharsis weapon which is a whip. Similar to what a character within two does to one of the musicians but seemingly gets no flack for it. Like, um, well- Ya know that character is not Eiji. Certainly the character is still great in their own ways but got damn Eiji Biwasaka was something else. That man was trash. Absolute garbage and I am dumpster diving. You got me fucked up if you think I wasn't there for it.
It was amazing. He did not wanna change. He was never going to change. He leaves because he didn't want to change.
He literally removes himself from the narrative and team because the protagonist tries to hold him accountable. Then still somehow manages to get where the plot is. Because he was that competent. Certainly he had to die in a Final Destination esque way nothing else could've killed him. Unimportant side note here he's trying to murder someone within Mobius. Even though that person is a terrible piece of shit he is still trying to kill them.
Not because they're terrible but because leaving them alive may end up causing him trouble in the long run.
This is because he blackmailed this other party into killing someone that was taking Eiji to court for embezzling from the elderly (the mother of the man taking him to court) and the disabled (not the mother he had just been embezzling for a while). He did this even though everything for the case was gathered and he'd be facing prison time regardless. He just did that shit as a fuck you on the way out because he could. It did not serve him in any way.
How did he blackmail this guy well by bringing up his insanity plea was in fact bullshit and he could hypothetically have this man retried or that plea brought under scrutiny. Because as I mentioned before this man was acquitted and then continued to do the same shit. So, don't get it twisted Eiji and Marie are no better or worse than each other.
However, in contrast to Marie who is indulged throughout all of the first game or you can't even continue her character story Eiji is actively stopped from killing this guy. A guy who physically assaulted a person in an underground idol group with a baseball bat blinding her.
Something that led to her suicide later.
Which might I note! Eiji is blamed for that suicide not the guy who fucking did the assault! No, not him. Eiji's blamed for her suicide because he did his job as a lawyer and got this guy acquitted on a plea of insanity. Then to add insult to injury the guy who did the assault then still behaves in a way that showcases he will continue to be this way and do those things again to other idols.
Is given that same excuse again like,
"No, he's clearly mentally unwell."
Okay he's clearly mentally unwell- Eiji should have known better though. He's just evil. He doesn't need help fuck that guy!
Oh, Marie do you need a hand? Do need a special little safe space in Mobius to work out all your issues. Here you go Îź (Mu) giftwrapped it for you too sweetie. You want brand new adoptive parents- Don't worry that's included take all the time you need!
The difference between how I treat my angelic daughter versus my rat bastard son.
The difference in writing does show Yamanaka's development as a scenario writer and personal growth when it comes to portraying these issues. However it is literally the difference between night and day.
Also both of these people are Go Home Club members.
I think I may have failed to mention that before. I just really wanted people to grasp the severity of their actions before I mentioned it really. These are your teammates. The people you're trying to get home with.
Other things done by teammates include but aren't limited too,
Fatphobia, transphobia, doxing, harassment, sexual harassment, negligence resulting in death, child abandonment/neglect, assault, cyber terrorism (which the protagonist of one can take part in), classism, sexism (misandry), identity theft, insurgency, stalking, false imprisonment, murder, attempted murder, generally be hateful spiteful people with the strongest hater energy on earth at times, literally being musicians before Go Home Club Members (which isn't a crime but counts towards the point here and occurred twice).
Marie, however, is essentially is given dissociative identity disorder by virtue of a new set of memories being created for her- ones separated from her trauma and it's subsequent effects. She also, as mentioned in this post, was given a pocket dimension so she could have the space and time to grow independently from that trauma.
This pocket dimension is a smaller subsect of Mobius and relies on Marie's existence within it to function.
It is also possible to get an alternative ending of and get out of this micro-mobius earlier by killing her. This is one of the endings I decided to get. So, from here we know that the protagonists of the Caligula Effect games can commit murder, commit cyber terrorism that ends up destroying the entire world at most and on the smallest scale Japan if the player choses to, betray all of their teammates that they make over the course of the game very similarly to what Marie does in one.
So, once again- I'm not faulting the grind I'm just stating the crimes.
All in order to make it clear to anyone reading this much that no one here is a good person. So it does not matter if some prisoners are Go Home Club members or musicians being on or the other does not make any prisoner better or worse. Everyone here is bad.
Go Home Club or Musician
Okay, so I bet some are wondering why I said all that. I must admit it was a very long way of getting to this point. However, I basically wanted to make it abundantly clear to anyone who comes across this that whether a character is Musician or part of the Go Home Club in Caligula Effect it does not equate to them being a good person.
Because the characters in Caligula Effect are not good people. They're not and they aren't meant to be.
The characters within the Caligula Effect series are individuals that have a lot of work to do on themselves. Who are in Mobius either by choice or due to the fact that they were suffering in reality/had regrets that they felt they could not change in the real world. They are all individuals who chose escapism over facing their issues head on and the series discusses the benefits and shortcomings of living that way.
Most if not all of them wound up in Mobius due to someone's misguided attempt in trying to help them.
I felt it was necessary to highlight hey the Go Home Club doesn't equal the heroes and the Musicians don't equate to the villains. They are just two groups in opposition of each other. There are people just as bad if not worse in both teams.
The only thing that decides whether someone will be in the Go Home Club or a Musician is their desire to go home.
If the character wants to go home or has doubts about Mobius in general they will fall into the Go Home Club category. If the character wants to stay in Mobius and believes full heartedly they can gain something from it even if they only plan to do that and then leave- That's a musician.
The musicians turned Go Home Club Members literally only become that later because they genuinely do want to go home and face those issues head on despite their doubts. This is one of the things that make it pretty clear that Caligula Effect is more so about rehabilitation and the many forms that can take.
So as much as I'd like to go this is who I'd like to be Musician's and Go Home Club members. The answer that I provided at the beginning of this is firmly rooted within this logic. Since we can see where the characters lie in regards to this based on how they engage with Milgram itself.
The characters have gone on record voicing their misgivings about Milgram or the fact that they are in favor of it. Some even going as far as blatantly stating that they want to go home or never want to leave.
Something that made this a lot easier to figure out once I looked at it from that angle. At least when it comes to answer this in a way that works off of Caligula Effect's own logic to some degree. This is why I highlighted that musicians do become go home club members.
Because it shows the possibility of switching between the two parties at ones discretion. Something the series plays around with itself in many ways.
So let's start with the Go Home Club prisoners. (And heads up, this section is being written up by @sinfulequity o/. Also as a heads up, I used Rochi's translations for the portal timelines and questionings!)
Yuno
Now Yuno starts off not minding being here. But even from the beginning, you can tell that she doesn't consider staying here permanently as an option
Es: [clears throat] Itâs about the few days youâve been tried as a prisoner by Milgram. Frankly speaking, how is it? Your life in prison. Yuno: Hmm, itâs surprisingly fun? I do have worries about how my family is doing, but⌠Itâs kinda like one of those strange, personal experiences. Es: FunâŚis it? Yuno: Thatâs right. The other prisoners are all entertaining, we sound each other out on various things, and the vibeâs pretty nice as well. In such conditions, observing other people sure does make for great fun, you feel?
Due to the atmosphere, she is enjoying herself- but that changes in the interim between trial one and trial two alluded to in this portal timeline.
21/07/05 (Muâs Birthday) Mu: Yuno. Donât you have something to say to me? Yuno: Huh? To you? Me? âŚâŚahh, uh? Your birthday, right? Happy birthday~ Mu: How mean⌠Since itâs my birthday, I really wish youâd said something before I had to come and tell you myself. Yuno: Right, right, Iâm sorry. Iâll be more careful in future~ Later! Haha⌠things have become even more of a botherâŚâŚâŚso was that Mu-chanâs real personality, then? Itâs probably because the guard did something, right?
By the time the second trial has started, whatever fun she gained from being in milgram has vanished. Only leaving her with the desire to get out of there. Even going so far as to question Es if they really believe that this environment is enjoyable any more.
Yuno: Well, if I were to say what Iâm trying to sayâŚitâs fucking bothersome. Es: ⌠Yuno: I said so at the start, didnât I? That punishing people outside of the law is boundless. And so I had no interest in Milgram. Es: Yes, I remember. You said that you would pay my judgment no mind and remain as you were. Yuno: Oh! Thatâs right! Iâm happy you remembered. But, you know, I didnât exactly hate it, Milgram. Itâs nothing but weird people but it was warmer than my day-to-day life. Es: It did appear as though you were having fun. Yuno: Yes, it was fun! They may be murderers, but theyâre interesting people! It puts me at ease, in a way, that weâre all people lacking in something. Es: You are saying that that changed and itâs my fault? Yuno: Yep! This situationâs bothersome-ness has won out over the fun so I am extremely cooled off. That is all. Es: ⌠Yuno: And? Are you satisfied with this situation? Es: You all are murderers. In order to clarify your sins, this job is necessary. Milgram will make clear your essences and truths- Yuno: That. Does it not hold up unless you desperately repeat it back to yourself?
This is further explored in her answers for the second trial questioning. Outright stating that she's bored and wants to leave and passive aggressively implying that Milgram doesn't really have a true purpose, since the law already exists.
Q.03Â Do you want to leave Milgram? Yuno: To be honest Iâm bored of it now. I kinda want to leave already Q.19 Would you forgive the other prisoners? Yuno: Thatâs not something for one person to decide on their own Isnât that what we have laws for?
It's a bit reminiscent of how she treats Mu now, right?
Futa
Most of his first voice drama is about wanting to get out of Milgram. If it isn't about that, then it's him getting flustered over how Es is pushing him. But here are a few specific moments
Es: Whatâs wrong? Are you so paralysed with fear that you canât even stand up? Futa: Donât mock me! Anyways, I wonât even accept that Iâm a prisoner. Bringing me to this weird-ass place is a violation of my human rights! Es: You wonât accept that youâre a prisonerâis that so? Futa: Of course I wonât! Youâre confining and imprisoning an innocent human being here! That makes you so much more of a fucking criminal, doesnât it? All of the other guys have just obediently accepted it for some reason, but you wonât fool me!
Futa: Hey, hey, hey, hey! Donât go around evaluating people like youâre better than everyone else. Once I get outta here, Iâm so gonna sue this place! You as well! You better not be thinking that youâll get off scot-free! Es: Hmm~? Futa: Iâll never forgive you bad guys. And, this place is called MilgramâIâll crush it down as well!Â
After the interim and trial two's start, this desire to get out of Milgram has strengthened. For the reasons of being harassed by intrusive thoughts and taking a walloping from Kotoko.
Futa: RightâŚ! It wasnât just me alone who was ganging up on the person who died! Thereâs no way to know whose comments lead to their death! Es: That might be true. You might not be the only one who needs to be judged for this. But⌠Futa: Then â isnât it weird that Iâm the only one who has to go through all of this? Being locked up in a weird nonsensical prison, having to let some brat lecture me, being faced with eyes constantly judging me⌠And even ifâ even if the person I was picking on online died⌠I didnât think they would die! I just thought that wrong things are wrong, and that a crime is a crime! You get that, donât you? See? Arenât we the same?
As he himself states, he finds it odd that he was the only person picked out of a large group to be in Milgram. He doesn't want to be here, he doesn't find this fair and he's at the limit of his sanity.
Mu
Mu is a tricky one, because you would think that she wants to stay here (outside of the initial anxiety in trial one)
Es: Hm⌠So thatâs the case, is it? Howâs life in Milgram then? Mu: I canât even begin to describe it. I just want to hurry up and go back home! Es: Oh? Why is that? You lot are given a decent amount of freedom here. Weâre granting you the few indulgences which exist as well. In fact, even youâve sent in a request asking for a crepe cake as well. Mu: Thatâs⌠Thatâs true, but⌠And, I did eat the crepe cake, but⌠I just really wanna go home. Es: Hm. Mu: Iâm sure that mummy and daddy are worried about me! [cries again] What even is this place? Why did you even have to bring me here?Â
Mu: Yeah, it is. Prison guard, youâre human as well, so⌠Iâll do my best. Iâll figure out what kinda person youâre fond of. Even though youâre a sad case who talks to rabbits. [giggles] Es: Thatâs enough. Our conversations donât have any flow to them, so thatâs not gonna happen. Mu: Iâll definitely return home. Iâll return home to mummy and daddy. So, if I get you to forgive me, Iâll be able to go back home for sure, right? Es: I donât really know. Mu: Yeah⌠Actually⌠If I think about it, compared to those good-for-nothing police trying to catch meâsomeone whoâs definitely not in the wrongâMilgram might just be better for me.
As we all can see, she states that maybe Milgram would be a better place for her to stay. At least in comparison to the prospect of being arrested and tried by the police. However, that is a coercive line of thinking, in and of itself. It's like being between a rock and a hard place. Furthermore, it implies that were the police not an issue, she'd immediately want to go back home again. And despite how comfortable she has gotten, Mu shows a good deal of concern towards how her parents are doing/worrying about her.
20/06/17 Shidou: âŚâŚdo you mind if we talk? It seems youâve relaxed a bit more recently, Kusunoki-kun. Mu: EhâŚâŚ yeah, definitely compared to the startâŚâŚ just a bit. But Iâm still scaredâŚâŚ we still donât know what they might do to us. I want to go home soonâŚâŚ I wonder whatâs happening thereâŚâŚ Papa and Mama must be really worriedâŚâŚ Shidou: Thatâs goodâŚâŚ You were crying so much, so I was concerned for you.âŚâŚyeah, Iâm sure. Your family will definitely be worrying about you. IâŚâŚ hope you can go back soon. Mu: Shidou-sanâŚâŚ did you come here to comfort meâŚâŚ? Iâm sorry, Iâd thought you wereâŚâŚ a scary personâŚâŚ fufu.
03 - âIt was really scary at the beginning, but now itâs nice and laid-back. And also⌠Haruka-kun is really nice! Heâll listen to anything I tell him.â 05 - âIâve been starting to think that maybe Iâd like to stay here forever⌠The outside world only ever does bad things to me. Though, Iâd be a bit sad that I wouldnât get to see papa and mama againâŚâ
Mu: Ah, itâs been a while, Warden-san. â Things have gotten tough, havenât they⌠Everyone seems to be struggling and the whole atmosphere feels tense because everyoneâs struggling, itâs really troublesome. Es: Is that so? Mu: But as for me, I think Milgram has become a lot more comfortable! I know now that I can get whatever I want if I ask for it, so I donât need to be so on edge anymore. Es: ⌠Mu: You did say that you and Milgram are our allies, and maybe you were right all along!
She's ultimately carved a place for herself in Milgram. However, she also won't let the "setting" of Milgram affect how she considers herself.
Mu: Anyway⌠I think you would do good to forgive me. Then Haruka-kun will be safe too. Ah, actually, couldnât you just forgive everyone? Then Kotoko-san wonât run amok, and you wonât have to think about all the difficult stuff. Es: That is⌠a very attractive proposal. Mu: Right? (giggles) Es: Abandoning all the thinking⌠How nice it would be if I could just do that. Mu: ⌠If you ask me, I donât really get why you donât do it⌠Es: Because this is the role Iâm playing. Mu: But the role was given to you, wasnât it? You didnât end up doing this because you wanted to, right? Itâs not a dream youâve had for a long time or anything, right, Warden-san? So thereâs no need to let it tie you down. Couldnât you just quit? Es: What are you⌠Mu: Warden-san, we call you âWardenâ because thatâs what you are, right? I was assigned to be a prisoner, but that doesnât mean my heart will become just that of a âprisonerâ too. After all, Iâm still me.
Kazui
Funny- for someone who said he's going to take a wait and see approach, he comes straight out of the gate about his intent to find a way out to Es
Kazui: Really â sorry, sorry! I really had no intention of causing you harm, Warden-kun. I was simply looking to safely gather some information and assess the situation in this prison a little better. Es: Huh? Kazui: You see, depending on who they are, once someone is here it might be impossible for them to break out. I'm the oldest here, so naturally, I should be the one testing how far we can go against you.
He goes on to explain in his first questioning that he does have concerns about Milgram but doesn't want to express them.
Q.20Â Do you have any complaints about your imprisonment? Kazui: I mean I do have some. But yâknow, thereâs some things about it that are so far removed from daily life. Itâs easier to just not think too hard about it.
Progressing to trial two, Kazui is now disappointed in Milgram. It gave such high expectations for itself, and how it could judge crimes deemed fine by the law and-
Kazui: I havenât forgiven myself⌠even if my lies are forgiven, it wonât resonate [with me]. It might just be both of these. All the lies Iâve told are tying me down. Ever since I was little, Iâve never truly opened myself to anyone. But in the end, people canât be saved if they donât [open up]. And by now, itâs gotten to a point where I canât do it by myself anymore⌠(machinery whirrs, bell rings) Kazui: I did think Milgram would be able to force its way past that, though. Es: Is that an attempt at provocation? Kazui: You didnât manage to reach my sin. Es: ⌠Kazui: Even though I want you to⌠Milgram isnât so great after all, is it?
-it really is better to be a let down, than let down, huh.
Mikoto
He has also stated from the start that he didn't want to be here. He has a job after all! He has rent to pay, obligations to meet- are you going to take care of it guard? You better, you know~
Es: Your name and age? Mikoto: Uh⌠Mikoto Kayano, 23. Wait, no! Iâve been wanting to talk to you this whole time, Warden-kun! Es: What is it? Make it short. Mikoto: Alright⌠when is this whole thing going to end? Es: Hah? Mikoto: No, itâs obvious, isnât it?! Suddenly being dragged to a place like this, being told all this weird stuff about killers and all thatâ is this some kind of comedy? A reality TV show? One of those monitoring things? Iâve been holding on to that thought this whole time, and that was also the reason I tried to get along with the others, y'know â because thatâll look better on a TV show, right?! â but look, this is stretching out for way too longâŚ! Whatâs up with this? Es: (sigh) You really still believe that? That Milgram is some kind of joke? Mikoto: I do! Of course I do! I mean⌠I really donât remember anything of note. Even if you talk about sins or murderersâ I donât know about any of that! Iâm just a normal worker at a companyâŚ
Mikoto: Whatâs with that?! Then arenât you getting ahead of yourself, just labelling me a murderer like that? Es: Iâm not. Milgram tells me that you did it. Thatâs enough for me. Mikoto: Why are you just blindly believing that? Thereâs no way of getting through to youâŚ! (sigh) Anyway. I really donât know anything! Nor have I killed anybody, or done anything bad! I was just living an ordinary, everyday life⌠and yet I got dragged into something this weird! (slams hands on the desk) Of course I want to think of all this as a jokeâŚ! Wouldnât anyone? Es: (non-committal hum) Mikoto: I have my own life, you know? And I just got accepted into the company that I was aiming for⌠If I get fired, youâll have to take responsibility for that.
Oh? What's that guard? He's being blamed for something he hasn't even done? For shame, for shame! Do you know how much this will hurt an innocent- no, an honest man?
04 - âItâs just so much that I donât understand. Honestly. Why do I have to face this kind of fateâŚ? I canât do this.â
Mikoto: Usually, if you just laugh and pretend, things work out in the end, right? Iâm pretty good at that. Making things work out to the best of my abilities. Es: Is that so⌠Mikoto: (laughs) âŚBut⌠itâs not coming to an end. All of this. With things Iâve never even heard before, the whole tiâ Es: ⌠Mikoto: âthe whole time⌠I have to make all these irritating experiencesâŚ!
He is stressed. He is reaching his limit. Can't you let off just a little? Isn't it unfair to punish someone for dreaming?
Es: In precise terms, itâs called dissociative identity disorder. Generally speaking, it refers to when a person experiences severe pain or stress, and a new personality is created to try and isolate the original personality from the resulting trauma. Mikoto: Yeah. I⌠probably come out to ease the stress Boku experiences. The fact that I come out for longer just means that Boku is constantly under extreme stress. Es: Stress⌠Namely the environment of Milgram, right? Mikoto: Right. Especially the fact that you judged against forgiving Boku is causing a lot of stress. Thatâs why heâs entrusting me with his heart.
Es: Even if it was you, John, who was in your body at the time â thereâs no way for you to prove that. At the very least not in a way that would be accepted in court. It could still be judged that youâre pretendingâ Mikoto: YouâŚ!! What do you think? Es: IâŚ? Mikoto: Iâm the one who did it! Boku didnât do it! You know that because of Milgram! I donât care about the law, I want to know what you think!
Don't worry; he'll forgive you if you choose right- right?
And now for the Musician prisoners.
Haruka
This shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone who's noticed, but he holds Milgram in high regard. It's the first place he's felt fully accepted. He's also started to learn how to connect with people in here- something he felt he always had difficulty with before
Es: Iâm the prison guard. That just now is how Iâll educate you prisoners. Iâm allowed to do so. [grabs Haruka] Got that? Listen carefully, prisoner number one. Iâll say it any number of times. Iâm the prison guard. Understanding your true nature is my job. No matter what you are or whatever nasty work youâve done, Iâll see all of it. Making judgments is my job. To say something like that⌠âYouâll be abandonedâ? Donât take me so lightly. Until I know your sins and complete my judgement as to whether theyâre forgivable or unforgivable, youâre objects for me to govern(2) Donât think Iâll let you escape. Haruka: Prison guard⌠Es: Wait a second, Haruka. What are you smirking for? Haruka: Ah, Iâm sorry. It must be creepy, right? Es: It does creep me out. [throws Haruka] Haruka: Ah, youâve got it wrong⌠This is a strange thing to say, but it made me a bit happy. Es: Happy? Haruka: Yeah. Es: What an odd thing to say, even if Iâm the one saying that. Being imprisoned, being restrained, even being interrogated like this too, isnât it natural to get angry in these kinds of situations? Hm⌠Now you mention it, you were always like that from the beginning. Thereâs a gloominess about you, but youâre immune to the chaos of Milgram itself. The point is, reacting like Futa and Mu would have made more sense. Haruka: Thatâs right. Futa got really angry. ScaryâAh, no, I mean, this is Milgram, isnât it? I donât really know what itâs for. But, having you, the prison guard, take some interest in me, listening to the various things I say⌠For some reason, it made me happy and such. Es: Hm.. Haruka: Even if that is your job. Even if itâs just to reveal the wrong things Iâve done.
Q.12Â Tell us your hobby. Haruka: I like talking with the other prisoners Q.22Â What do you think of the prison outfits? Haruka: Theyâre kind of relaxing Q.23Â Is there anything youâd like to have sent to you there? Haruka: Not particularly Q.25Â When you get out of here, where do you want to go? Haruka: I canât think of anywhere
As Milgram continued to progress, Haruka gains more confidence. And has grown more comfortable in Milgram as a result. He states that he likes himself now. He doesn't want to leave this environment that has been so accommodating to him.
Es: You⌠Are you really Haruka Sakurai? Haruka: Eh? Wh-what are you saying? It is me! But everyone has been telling me that recently â that Iâve changed. Es: Yeah. When I think back to how you were trembling in fear back during the first trial⌠you sure have gotten bolder. Haruka: (giggles) Es: I donât know whether thatâs a good thing or a bad thing though⌠Haruka: (laughs) If Iâve changed, then Iâm glad! Up until now, Iâve always really hated myself, thatâs why⌠Es: Hm? Haruka: A-ah, I think the reason Iâve become like this is because I had two benefactors, and one of them is you, Warden-san, soâ Es: Huh? Haruka: I wanted to thank you, Warden-san! Es: Thank me? Haruka: Because you forgave me, Warden-san!
Q.01Â Do you love yourself? Haruka: I think I like myself now Q.03Â Do you want to leave Milgram? Haruka: I want to stay here forever Q.18 Which of the other prisoners is most like you? Haruka: Nobody Theyâre all amazing people
Well- maybe that'll change with this new verdict? Who's to say.
Shidou
Shidou wants one thing out of Milgram, and it's disgusting a death sentence. Preferably stamped and signed by a child (like Es).
Es: You sure are composed, arenât you? Shido: Thatâs just my personality. I just simply donât think bad of itâthis place, I mean. Es: You mean, Milgram? Shido: Yeah, this place will put me to death. Es: What? Shido: I might not get a golden opportunity like this again, so Iâll get straight to the point. Es⌠You decide how the prisoners will be dealt with, right? Es: Yeah. Thatâs right. Shido: The death penalty is what Iâm hoping for. Thank you in advance.Â
However, with the ongoing events in Milgram, his viewpoint has become conflicted. He still wants to die, but he doesn't want others to. However, he's the closest thing to medical help that they have so he can't die just yet.
Shidou: Es-kun. Iâve killed a lot of people. Like I previously told you in the interrogation, Iâve killed for scientific reasons as well. So⌠Es: Are you about to beg me not to forgive you again? Even though Iâve already told you itâs no use? Shidou: Thatâs right. Please donât forgive me⌠is what I would like to ask. Es: ⌠Shidou: I⌠âI donât want to be forgivenâ. That feeling of mine remains the same. I need to be punished. I need to atone for my sins. I donât think Milgram is in the right, butâŚ! There is no better place than this to atone for my crimes. But⌠as long as Milgram continues like this⌠we wonât be able to save those who get injured if I donât get forgiven!
Shidou: ⌠That wonât do⌠I mustnât be forgiven. Otherwise⌠the countless lives Iâve taken will never be paid back. Es: Heh. If youâre really trying to give your life as compensation for the people youâve killed, then thereâs no reason to stay alive that will hold up, anyway.
Mahiru
It's not quite an intrinsic desire to stay in Milgram specifically. But what kind of girl wouldn't love a heart pounding adventure~? The mystery, the thrill- it's enough to make your heart burst!
Mahiru: [giggles] Just then, it felt like I was waiting for my date to arrive. Kinda made my heart flutter. Es: Iâm not exactly one to talk, but⌠Iâm surprised that you can say such a thing despite being in this prison. Mahiru: Really~? But, this unfamiliar setting makes things super romantic, you know? Thanks to it, every day has been such a delight.
20/06/10 Futa: Hey, why are you acting so carefree all the time? Youâre the oldest of the girls here, you should act it and deal with the others properly. Mahiru: Eh~? Iâm acting carefree~? But maybe youâre right. I mean, IâŚâŚ ah, letâs make this a quiz. Hey, Futa-kun. What do you think I like doing? Tick, tick, tick, tickâŚâŚ Futa: Ahh, what even is this mood youâve started. Itâs annoying. Just tell me the answer already. Mahiru: Bzzt! Timeâs up! The correct answer is âtravellingâ and âexciting thingsâ~ You donât get many chances at a lifestyle as exciting as this, right? So of course Iâm going to be a bit carefree, ufufu~
She may have endured a lot of pain in the interim period between trial one and two, but that doesn't stop her from enjoying Milgram and the people in it! It just means that she thinks her way of loving is unforgivable now.
05 - âSpending my time at Milgram, Iâve really grown to love everyone here. I love you as well, Es-kun! But⌠me loving people canât be forgiven, rightâŚ?â
Hey, tell her; what isn't she doing right?
Amane
Amane is very aware that Milgram isn't normal. But neither was her upbringing, so maybe she'll fit right in here? Maybe she'll fit in so much that the religion that she adheres to will fit like a glove. And if not... then that just makes this yet another trial from god, right?
Es: Geez⌠Youâre quite something for your age. Even most adults would be at least a bit anxious in an environment like this. Amane: Eh? Itâs not scary at all. After all, God is there to protect me! Es: In that aspect, you really are a child⌠Amane: Of course this is a rather unusual experience, but I am aware that it is something like a trial. I am certain that, once I have overcome this, I will be able to achieve further personal growth once more.
Amane: Hm. You may say itâs wrong, but isnât what you are doing here a crime as well? Well, I do have something more important to me than the general law, so I will not try to judge(/look down on) you either, Warden-san. Es: Geez, youâre so stubbornâ Amane: You see! I donât hate Milgram, either. Rather than one single law, there are other standards to judge my sins by. And those are closer to my spirit, as well! Es: Hmm. Amane: The standards that judge my sins are somewhere else â in my heart, my blood, my entire body, they are firmly rooted in all those places! Es: And within those standards, your murder was not a sin? Amane: Exactly! Es: I see. Amane: Ah, I am looking forward to it! Seeing whether your judgement will align with that of these higher standards! If that is the case, maybe Milgram would be the right world for us to live in, rather than the outside world! Milgram relies on your judgement, isnât that right? In that case, you could become the mediator for a far more righteous world!!
Q.20Â Do you have any complaints about your imprisonment? Amane: No, since this is a trial set for me by God.
Of course, being rejected and having those voices in her head between trial one and two wasn't helpful. But she's willing to talk this out. You've talked before and Amane is a kind girl, willing to give chances.
Amane: Warden. Es: What is it, Prisoner? Amane: Weâve been disappointed by you. Es: Hah? Amane: Even though we could sense the possibility of the new world we desire here in Milgram⌠and in you. Es: I donât care how much you look down on me. I told you that wonât work. Amane: Furthermore, you may say incomprehensible things, such as us ânot being forgivenâ⌠Es: Oi. Amane: But we are generous. For now, let us make some time for a conversation with you. After all, our history is one that is built on dialogue.
Es: Shut your mouthâŚ! I am the one casting the judgements here! Amane: Hehehe. And how does that set you apart from us? Es: ⌠I told you to shut up⌠Listen to what Iâm telling you. Amane: Hehe⌠This is nice. If the world youâre striving for is admirable in my eyes⌠That is to sayâŚ
Even to the sinners that deny her.
Kotoko
Kotoko has never really hid the fact that she wants to co-operate with Milgram- with Es. As someone who wants to work outside of the law, a place like Milgram is almost too good to be true.
Kotoko: Donât space out, the interrogation isn't over. Es: A-ahh.. yeah. Kotoko: Eh, well, if you're done with it anyway, then itâs not a problem. Guard-san. No⌠Es. Donât you want to join forces with me? I think the two of us would make good partners. Es: Join.. forces with you? Kotoko: With you, in the role of a prison guard, with information you gather from the interrogations, and me, in the role of a prisoner, with information I gather from my daily life here⌠Working together and sharing our findings. What do you think? Es: Stop joking around. Kotoko: Why? I think itâs quite a good bargain. Look, you can view the incident with Kayano Mikoto as a free trial-
Kotoko: Heh. I want to be like you. I refuse to tolerate sin. Es: You won't tolerate sin? Kotoko: Yes. I despise evil. Hurting the innocent through violence, taking away from others, killing people⌠I canât stand it! There are too many cases of the law being unable to deliver a verdict to sinning. Just by exploiting the loopholes in the law, the sinners who have tortured and bullied the weak can still live out their lives unpunished! I want to change this world, but I alone only have so much power. Es: KotokoâŚÂ  Kotoko: To be honest, I don't know your true intentions. And I don't know if you are a similar person to me with similar thoughts. In the end, I could be deluding myself with wishful thinking. Even still, this place has multiple methods of deducing good and evil. To me, MILGRAMâs very nature has a kind of charm to it. How about it? Do you understand me as a person now?
Q.01Â Who exactly are you? Kotoko: Yuzuriha Kotoko The person who plans on becoming your fangs. Well, that all depends on you though.
21/10/26 (Kotokoâs First Trial) Kotoko: âŚâŚcome, Es. Letâs fight together.
After having her mindset validated, Kotoko decided to take up her end of her proposed deal in full force. Force being the key word here. She is ready and willing to go at a moments notice (or even without one). Aren't you happy to have such a loyal partner? Hmm? She's acting like if she could take the power you hold at any time, she would?
02 - âHeh. As expected, you wanted us to work together, huh? Iâll be answering to your resolve and your expectations. With all the strength I have.â 03 - âI gave the prisoners that you didnât forgive what they deserved. Going along with Milgramâs system, I didnât go all-out yet. I figured youâd need some more time to think about it too. âŚWhatâs with that face?â 04 - âI did tell you to follow your intuition and that Iâd leave things to you, but youâre really going easy on them. I think I wouldâve forgiven less people. Hmph, if only I was the warden [in this place]⌠Well, no ill feelings, I guess.â
... That's probably just your imagination~ Well, it is what it is. After all, she knows just how taxing this much responsibility is on Es' poor little shoulders... Don't worry. She'll take that burden on.
Kotoko: I know it well. Itâs so hard to hold the responsibility of a guard all alone. Iâve also felt this way. You are such a kind person. You canât stand the prison changing with the power of your choices. So you need someone to be with. Leave all of the dirty work to me. Es: Iâm⌠a kind person? Kotoko: Does your head hurt anymore? Donât worry. Leave it to me, and together weâll be able to create the right MILGRAM. Es: I see⌠that MILGRAM...
Just make sure not to betray her, or go back on your word- okay? It's like Futa said. If you get off now, you're a traitor~
Anyways, I hope this was a fun read! It was fun discussing this and I hope the logic tracked for why every prisoner was put in each group!

DC x DP Prompt
So hereâs a thought I keep having regarding Danny. Like I keep seeing people refer to Danny as a twink, so how about we go farther with it.
Imagine Pretty boi Danny, Iâm talking bout heâs got soft hair, cute smile, glows wearing heels and all around just looks like a Faerie (Heâs King by this point)
Going with this,he decided to have fun and convince people that heâs actually a Fae. The potential is endless especially when In the Dc universe.(Protection comes in many forms after all)
The only thing though is if he DOES go into Dc itâs for a vacation and he decides to do an Ember and be an Idol he also doesnât hide the face heâs not human so to others heâs a meta who decided to use his powers to sing. He gets really popular and has being doing shows and concerts, till he has to do a show in Gotham.
Shenanigans ensue
Hereâs a pic for reference
It has occurred to me that my Danny in this Au is a K-pop idol, specifically Stray kidz comes to mind when making this
Bonus points for Whoever can figure out Which Boy in Stray Kidz heâs model after
(Hint: People are Always Shocked when he sings đ¤)
Edit: There are 4 songs I have in mind for Danny
Going Dumb- Stray Kidz
2 U- Justin Beiber
Better- Arc North
Ghost- Justin Beiber
This is an open prompt anyone can add to if they like. Iâm curious what the phantom will add

It is far too late at night for me to be digging through my old traditional art. So.
The first arts I ever made of Chara, and Frisk. And also a solitary Chisk too. Back in middle school when I would draw on my phone. I am glad I got these old pieces off of my DeviantArt before I deleted it a couple years ago. Otherwise they would have been. Well. Gone.
See here a Frara and a Frisk and a Flowey and a Chara and a Chisk. I am pretty sure that is the only time I have ever drawn Flowey. And it is the only time I will EVER draw Flowey.
Another Frisk and Chara. As you can see. Frisk has grey eyes. And Chara has blue and red eyes. Because I was an edgy middle schooler. And Chara has always been my favorite character. So the highest honor I could ever have bestowed upon them was that classic duality motif.
A little. Reference for the two that I made for myself. Ah. So sad that Chara doesn't have the ahoge I gave them in the previous drawings.
And finally. Bonus Chisk.
Because. Well. Chisk.
So. Let's compare my old middle schooler self's designs for them vs my current self's designs. And. Also. As a treat. My first design of Kris from 2019 vs my current design as well.
Ok. First thing's first.
Frisk.
So. Like. The way I design Frisk nowadays is in fact 100% based off the way I used to draw them off. Yes, there are some obvious differences. But the suspenders and the short sleeved shirt were, well, you know the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". That is always true. Though I will say that the little hearts instead of gold buttons, is also taken from the old design, because I distinctly remember thinking to myself that Frisk should have a heart in the back of the suspenders where they cross over eachother. And also. On the topic of the hair.
The way I do Hero's hair is 100% actually based on old Frisk's hair.
Because well. Hero is the beta protagonist design for Undertale. And my old Frisk is basically the beta design for my current Frisk. You get it.
Next.
Frara.
Yeah that old design was extremely basic. I don't think I ever used to think about the Unused Human Sprite back then. But. Well. I sure do now. A big glow-up for Frara. And a height reduction. Their current design is very much inspired by the place in Undertale where they can be seen-
Waterfall!
I think to myself. Well. What would a character confined to a constantly raining place need? A raincoat and rainboots!
I can't like. NOT give them stuff like that. Just wouldn't be true to me.
Chisk.
The fandom may have forgotten about Chisk in the years. But I will never forget about Chisk. A fanmade fusion of Chara and Frisk. I will never not think about them. They're in my brain like a song I love. Shawty like a melody in my head. CHISK OH CHISK MY LITTLE SCRUNKLE.
Anyway. Not much design notes for Chisk, past or present. Except for that the old design is a blatant ripoff of a design that I have unfortunately very much no source for.
If anyone knows who the original artist is, please tell me so I can thank them for making such a wonderful image.
Now. Before we get to Chara.
Kris.
Well. They got edgier. And their shawl thing got more accurate to their Dark World self. That's all I really have to say aside from FFUCK I AM SUCH A GENIUS FOR MAKING THEIR SHOES THE SAME COLOR AS THE SHADE OVER THEIR EYES. GODDAMN. BIG WIN FOR ME ON THAT ONE. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. HELL YEAH KRIS. YOU'RE A FFUCKING WEIRDO AND A COOL KID.
And finally. Chara!
My original design for them is. Hm. Well. I'll be honest whenever I see a Chara Undertale without the collared shirt and sweater combo going on I get annoyed, even if the one giving them a turtleneck is my own paste self.
Also. The green-grey shorts and boots were based on clothes I actually had at the time. So. Like. I have always been a big projector onto Chara. Shit man. Even and especially nowadays I project onto them. The hair, the collared shirt and sweater combo. It is, unabashedly, very self indulgent. Those are very deliberate choices. The ffucking Roxy LaLonde hair flicks and that combo of sweater and collared shirt is LITERALLY all over characters I draw. My own damn persona, my character Blue, even Blitz with his wild hair I will still default to doing like that in sketches.
Do you know how hard it is for me to not give characters that type of hair. And that collared shirt and sweater type combo. It is. The hardest decision to not do it.
Cutting this post short at here because there is another post I want to make.

Mindless Talking 01
(( I LOST THE ORIGINAL ASK BECAUSE I WAS TRYING TO SEND IT TO MY DRAFTS BUT IT ENDED UP POSTING AND I PANICKED AND DELETED IT WHWHEHHFBEBRBHEHEHEHâšď¸âšď¸âšď¸âšď¸âšď¸âšď¸âšď¸ IM SO SORRY ANON ))
an anon asked me for more thoughts about â hero and villain maybe kidnapped by someone (or something !?!?!!) .. maybe they were getting hypnotized ! and villain couldn't handle it and got hypnotized in the span of a day while hero resists the hypnosis for days before giving up .. is that a mesmerizer reference â so here it is !!! , heads up this is mostly basing off the mesmerizer theories >_>
maybe they were both kidnapped for something valuable, information, anything - even just for entertainment/for fun.
obviously both Hero and Villain refused / resisted this and tried to fight back so their captor(s) used the last trick up their sleeves; hypnosis !
usually it's the heroes who fell for hypnosis quicker but i think it'd be fun if it was the villain instead :p
this is more of a bonus but maybe if they were forced to do something that showed them to the public , Hero tried to vaguely reach for help- letting out signals (sos in morse code via blinking , etc)
in the original mesmerizer mv , it was shown that miku (or in this case, villain since they're sort of taking Miku's place in this scenario) was fully hypnotized in the span of a day because her eyes turned black when it was night time
whereas teto (or hero in this case as well) resisted the hypnosis for 10 days in total before giving in to the hypnosis.
maybe hero couldn't take it anymore and lost hope that anyone would ever find the two (or just them), that's why they gave in to the hypnosis.
this is just a silly idea that i had , lmk what u guys think if it :P
mesmerizer mv if anyone would like to listen to it - it's a rlly great song ^_^

Morimyu Extras Translation Commission Group Order?
If anyone has ever enjoyed the Morimyu backstage extras, like the Op.3 adlibs where Louis drops a knife and terrifies Moran, there are a number of people from the Save our Twisted Hearts Discord group, including myself, looking to fund translation commissions to have subtitles for a bunch of non-main stage Op.5 and Op.2 extras content by pooling our monetary resources together, as they rarely get translated otherwise, regardless of the fandom.
To be very clear, contributing is not mandatory to access subtitles of any of the extras (I generally use this term or "extras content" to refer to Disc 2 of any stage Blu-ray or DVD, but also other content that is not included on the main stage disc), and the groups orders we have made have already been used to help fund translations for the Op.1 extras, and most of the extras content for Op.3 and Op.4 (the subtitles for Op.1 and Op.3's extras are available on Kanasmusing's postings for Morimyu subtitles!). Beyond that, I funded the commission for the translation and subtitles of the Op.3 adlibs and a few Hakumyu backstages and I have always made all the associated media accessible to anyone who wanted it... just in case anyone needs proof of us having paid for translations of Morimyu content before.
Anyway, at the moment, assuming nothing happens, we collectively have enough funds to pay for translations and subtitles of most of Op.5's non-main stage content (this includes things like the adlibs and cast comments from Disc 2 of the Op.5 Blu-ray/DVD, the bonus team videos that came with the purchase of the streams on DMM, and the pre-order bonus DVD, though this does not include videos that are purely songs)... and are fairly close to gathering enough commitments to fund almost most of Op.2's main extras disc (this would be disc 2 of the Blu-ray/DVD), though we could possibly instead fund a commission to get translations for the Op.2 pre-order DVD bonus (we can do almost one or the other, but not both).
Given this situation, and how close we are to funding the Op.2 backstage (our general preference is to pay for translations of the more costly content first), I would like to ask if anyone has an interest in contributing to our next translation commission for Op.5 and Op.2's non main stage content... and that they please message me directly for more details, preferably ASAP, if they do.

GLORILLA, MEGAN THEE STALLION, AND CARDI B - "WANNA BE (REMIX)"
youtube
Go Jukebox! Go Jukebox! Blurb 'em, Jukebox! Blurb 'em Jukebox!
[7.10]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: Punchline after punchline, read after read, hook after hook, no fat: just three talented titans at their tyrannical, terrifying peaks. [9]
TA Inskeep: Cardi joins Megan and Glo â clearly their spiritual daughter â for some real hot girl shit. The beat isn't anything special, but when you've got spitters this hot on the track, I don't care. [8]
Taylor Alatorre: The addition of Cardi B turns what was a fun little collab into a putative Event Song, a burden that the midtempo sameness of the Soulja Boy sample is perhaps unequipped to take on. It's a trunk rattler, sure, but it feels perpetually on the verge of starting and never going anywhere, much unlike the drop-centric "Pretty Boy Swag." The upside of this rhythmic severity is that it makes it easier for the listener to pick out the pleasing stylistic contrasts at play here: the way GloRilla splays herself out across two whole bars just to remind us that a year has 365 days in it, whereas Cardi barks the words "pop ass on jet ski" like sheâs avoiding a shot clock violation. Megâs role is as the stabilizing force between these two extremes, which is maybe the first time in history that anyoneâs referred to Megan Thee Stallion as a âstabilizing force.â [6]
Katherine St. Asaph: These credits should really be in reverse order, to better represent the three rappers' respective firepower here. [6]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Iâm filling out a Cardi B apology form after being down on âMiamiâ earlier this year â this verse is so good that when she gives herself a pep talk in the ad libs at the end it sounds deserved. Glo and Meg are also great, of course, and Iâll always be favorably inclined towards a rap hit that pays tribute to E-40, but the beat here lets the trio down â it creeps when it should at very least groove. [7]
Nortey Dowuona: I am going to repeat what a great black poet once said in regards to all my white colleagues in reference to Cardi B: Don't save her; she don't wanna be saved. (Megan and Glo are good on this, tho.) [6]
Julian Axelrod: "Wanna Be" feels gloriously unmoored from time, as Megan Thee Stallion and GloRilla play hot potato with the "Pretty Boy Swag" beat and shout out 2012 heartthrobs Channing Tatum and Justin Bieber. (To be fair, Channing has never looked better.) But in an era where guest verses are airdropped in from a tour bus several states away, the biggest throwback is their electric interplay on the chorus, which crackles with the kind of chemistry that can only be achieved by two baddies in the same room. Listening to them trade bars feels like walking into a conversation directly after the punchline; if you have to ask why they're laughing, the joke is probably on you. Spare a thought for Cardi, who's left to wander the empty space around them like Howard Hughes roaming his abandoned mansion. Hearing her root for herself on the outro after Meg and Glo finish hyping each other up is one of the most devastating depictions of third wheeling ever put to tape. [7]
Jonathan Bradley: The Soulja Boi flip is hot but the Project Pat flip is hotter. Glo is imperious ("Do I look like fuckin' Super-Woman" she asks, incredulous), but Megan is commanding, running a sword through a million misguided fantasies with a cutting "You ain't my daddy; I'm not your baby." (Nice Gucci Mane call-back, too; the references here are laser-focused on the early Obama era.) This is a remix, so we get bonus Cardi material. Unlike Glo and Meg, she has to hype herself up at the end, which feels kinda bad, but she could never be a third wheel, not when she's bringing fun phrasings like "hoes be chippity-chopped," which rhymes, of course, with "hickory dickory dock." [8]
Ian Mathers: The original didn't particularly feel like it was missing anything, but I'll happily take Cardi's fierce verse here for "my toes white like Matthew McConaughey" alone. And I'm not too proud to admit that at some point in the future I am absolutely going to refer to myself as "white boy wasted," either. [8]
Brad Shoup: Is Megan admitting to skiplagging? Megan, they'll ban you from the airline! [6]

queen songs that give off major aziracrow
for all of ur ineffable playlist needs!
disclaimer: this post was definitely not written by the bentley
as a former queen obsessed teenager who discovered good omens through queen back in 2019, i've been hearing aziraphale and crowley in every other queen song i listen to. so, i might as well put it to good use. enjoy songs and lyrics that broke me.
(ps. i'm not including the songs used in the show or book, or anything super obvious, because i'm pretty sure no one needs me to explain why good old fashioned lover boy and love of my life are aziracrow)
long away (a day at the races, 1976)
snake eye theory bitches come get ur juice.
this song reminds me of crowleyâs general angst and trauma. his complicated relationship with heaven, not believing in it as an institution, but marvelling at the beauty of the stars, of aziraphale.
other parts of the song also feel to me like someone overcoming the pain they experienced in the past, finding a better future. this is endgame for both of them.
dreamer's ball (jazz, 1978)
this is another crowley being sad song. it's about yearning for your lost love, going to sleep and dreaming of them.
the dancing comment is very 2x05, but the second chorus really conveys the desperate and intense love that aziracrow has.
i can't live with you (innuendo, 1991)
this is so miscommunication and codependency season 2 gave us. they are just falling apart without each other, but need to be separated to get over their shit. with a little dash of religious symbolism? i am obsessed.
the millionaire waltz (a day at the races, 1976)
the aziraphale vibes are off the charts in terms of instrumentals (and then brian may comes swooping in gloriously with his guitar). this song finds love and wealth in simple material things. human things, one might say. there's also references to dancing, holding hands, lovers in the rain, music, etc.
it also yearns for lost love, wishing a former lover to come back to them. this reads to me as aziraphale wishing for crowley to join him in heaven, where they can truly be happy together.
it also gives off very go-heaven vibes, being just slightly too upright and proper, almost to the point of being sinister.
my melancholy blues (news of the world, 1977)
this is just crowley post-every. (also crowley in the bar in 2x05.)
some day one day (queen ii, 1974)
a lot of this song's lyrics are hopeful. the first verse is about being heard, finally (the music being loud reminds me of the nightingale not being actually heard in 1x06). crowley is finally able to confess, but they still cannot be together. yet.
the final verse reflects on this concept. when they were younger ("young" means nothing to eternal beings but whatever), prefall and post-not-apocalypse, they were so close to being together. but still, they're not there yet.
but they will come home. south downs will happen. some day.
bonus: love me like there's no tomorrow by freddie mercury (mr. bad guy, 1985)
that feeling when you know you and your lover have drifted apart, but you try to fix it all by taking them in your arms and kissing them, even though you know deep down that you will never be loveable, but you still hold onto the hope that it might be enough.
that's all, hope you enjoyed!
here's my good omens playlist, if anyone is interested in listening:
(i know i said i wouldn't talk about songs that were in the show or book, but i want to give a particular shout out to it's a hard life.
also, for the record: goflb is crowley coded, and killer queen is aziraphale coded.)
#good omens#crowley#aziraphale#aziracrow#queen band#freddie mercury#ineffable husbands#ineffable idiots#ineffable spouses#song recs#op is not the bentley i swear#op also totally remembered it was freddie's birthday today and that's absolutely why she's posting this now#Spotify

In the Wukongverse what is Wukong's and Macaque's singing voice like?
Oh I do Love me some singing hcs. Took me a while cus I bad at actually remembering singers. I'm just trying to add as many song links as possible.
LMK: These two's english VAs (Sean Schemmel & Alejandro Saab) have sung before, and I will repeat my thoughts. Whilst Macaque is the more "stage friendly" of the two and can interact with an audience and put on a show, Wukong is stupidly good at singing. Like, LMK!Mac is dumbfounded how good his Wukong is. Wukong's stage fright gets to him tho, so his voice cracks the second he detects anyone listening to him - only Mac, the kids, and baby monkeys know his true voice. He destroys everyone at drunk karaoke tho.
HeroIsBack: SWK's singing voice is initally very harsh (not use much in 500 years) but grows softer/more confident as he sings. I can almost hear it as being like the song in the film itself "The Feeling of Flying", just full of joy. Also dubbing bonus; Jackie Chan singing the Cantonese version of "I'll Make A Man Out of You" from Mulan (1998). HeroIsBack!LEM's voice is similarly underused but a hidden gem. Mostly reserved for lulling infant monkeys to sleep. A tenor like Thomas Sanders. Gets embarassed quickly because his singing voice "doesn't match his face" (Dasheng disagrees).
Reborn: You could say his warped view of his own demonic identiy hasn't exactly left Reborn!SWK a positive idea of his singing ability. His actual singing voice is surprisingly deep with a lot of octave range; example Jonathan Young. 100% would jam with anime opening songs. Secretly gets really excited when he duets. Reborn!LEM is much less confident in their performing ability than the other LEMs, his voice is much softer, quieter, and soprano-pitch. Ethereal almost; like Ben Whishaw in The Tempest. And this LEM might just sing "Ariel's Song/Full Fathom Five" too - since his six ears often "hear "pick up" songs of the future. May use his voice to guide the lost souls he chariots.
Netflix: This SWK do be singing, and he penned his own theme song! Hidden talent at composing? I hc that he's singing voice is the metal version of his theme as done by Voodoo Kung Fu & Ian Honeyman. Probably scares the other monkeys (sans Reborn!SWK who starts rocking) the first time they let him take the mic and he goes full heavy metal on them. Has a hidden softer tune only his pilgrims + LEM know about. Netflix!LEM would say that they'd rather eat glass than sing in public, but like their main inspo (Aubrey Plaza - "Get Happy") they are ridiculously good at swing/jazz style music where the singer interacts with/insults their audience. A good example of them singing (whether for a con/trick) would be Amber Gray in Hadestown.
NewGods: This SWK sounds like a smooth cruise /lounge singer. This man can bust out a Sinatra that'll make the room shake. He however can get really emotionally into the music and end up crying at the oddest songs. Good reference would be Richard Cheese. NewGods!LEM gots broadway vocals like Josh Groban, and will completely shred you with his Phantom of the Opera performance. Unless he decides to use his voice for mischief and starts singing filthy blues songs with his SWK.
2000sCartoon: I bet these two dont really flex their singing muscles much so they dont sound "good", but SWK loves him some travelling songs and shanties, and his LEM provides good backing. SWK has a crackly, higher pitched singing voice like George Salazar (Be More Chill + Percy Jackson Musical). 2000sCartoon!LEM's voice I can see being smoother like Ashe (of "to ashes" on youtube), and once he becomes more confident in himself; its one of the first clear distinctions the two monkeys can make between one another.
Meihouwang: I could see Shihou & Mihou having "younger-sounding" singing voices similar to Zach Callison (of Steven Universe fame), and Jeremy Jordan (Tangled Series + Death Note Musical) respectively. Absurdly good for monkeys with no formal musical training.
Smash Legends: This Wukong has a pretty good singing voice but he uses it for goofy "meme" songs (ex Loney Island) since he's actually a little mic shy. Has potiential for greatness. "Serious" singing voice is similar to Sam Tsui. Smash!LEM aka SixEars is a legit indie music star along the lines of a "faceless" nearly-online-exclusive artist - best comparasion I can give for his "typical" vocal ranges (remember perfect mimicry/pitch) is between Aly & AJ to Taron Egerton. Will leave the other monkeys in the dust in a competition.
No matter who's the "better" singer of all of them one thing is for certain; you turn on that karaoke machine around the SWKs and LEMs, and there's about to be a whole lot of monkey business.

I have thoughts on ttpd
And I donât know where else to share them without my criticisms and qualms being written off as blind hatred so here goes
Quantity over quality was definitely the motto with this one. She said at one of the eras shows that this album was when she needed writing more than ever. That doesnât however, mean that everything she wrote needed to be on this album. Part of what makes an album good is an artists ability to edit their songs into a cohesive work.
Going off of that last point: I blame the vault tracks. Swift and her team saw how much people loved the vault tracks and went overboard with the concept of âgive the people more.â The vault tracks worked so well because they felt like a bonus. When the whole album feels like âvault tracksâ it loses some of the allure.
The concept is pretty weak overall. The aesthetic that was used to market the album only fits about half of the songs. I was hoping for literary references beyond just name dropping various poets and artists but so far Cassandra is the closest that I can recall that actually references poetry. Iâm sure thereâs some connections Iâm missing so please enlighten me, (my academic background is in art history, not literature).
I feel like conceptually there are at least two albums here. The first is the actual ttpd concept of poetic sad songs, and then thereâs a second set of songs that feel much more modern and feel like they belong on a different album (Florida!!!, down bad, imgonnagetyouback, etc.). I wish she wouldâve taken the double album concept all the way and grouped the songs into more cohesive narratives.
Imgonnagetyouback is the exact same idea as get him back! by Olivia Rodrigo. I just feel like thereâs some irony there because didnât Taylor sue Olivia for something similar (I donât know the ins and outs of that whole situation so forgive me if Iâm missing some nuance)? Not that two people canât write about the same thing but something about these two songs in particular seems too similar. They donât sound the same but specifically the lines âkey his car⌠make him lunchâ in Rodrigoâs and âbe your wife ⌠smash up your bikeâ in Swiftâs are the exact same âdomestic tasks/destroy vehicleâ dichotomy. Idk man something isnât quite right about the whole thing to me.
A lot of the lyrics do not fit the melodies AT ALL. so many lines feel oddly paced, either stretched out where they shouldnât be or too many words crammed in. The melody should fit the lyrics and itâs just not happening in this album as a whole. So many of the lyrics are just too wordy and awkward. Poetry doesnât need to be long to be good.
Some of the lyrics are just so bad that they take me out of the song. Iâm sure anyone thatâs read this far can think of a few instances that made them pause. Hearing the words âfinance guyâ in a song was absolutely jarring.
Overall I just feel like itâs a poor representation of her abilities. Sheâs shown that she can write better. Her other albums were better sonically. Thereâs just nothing about this that is phenomenal. Very few memorable songs. No standout radio hits. Itâs not the worst album ever made but itâs just so mediocre.
This album was made for a specific type of fan; someone who is up to date on her personal life and will listen to find Easter eggs, someone who will buy all of the vinyls just to complete their collection, someone who will love these songs just because they are Taylor Swift songs. I think every fan can find a few songs they like but Iâd be shocked if anyone could genuinely say that they enjoy every song on this album, or that they think this album is one of Taylorâs better releases.

Heaven :x: Hell first reactions
Heaven Side:
Waiting On A Twist Of Fate - we already know this is a banger
Landmines - fun and catchy, just some good classic pop-punk vibes
I Can't Wait - now this feels like truly oldschool Sum 41
Time Won't Wait - gotta be honest here, this one is missing a certain je ne sais quoi. If I had to guess i'd say this was one of the ones that was originally written for a different artist
Future Primitive - hella Offspring vibes on this one and I'm here for it
Dopamine - this one's okay, but the verses are very similar to Landmines, making it feel kinda like Landmines again but not as good
Not Quite Myself - wasn't sure at first, initially felt a little samey but I like the way it switched up in the second verse, won me over
Bad Mistake - jammy, banger, awesome Offspring vibes again
Johnny Libertine - Yes! Super oldschool sound, this rules
Radio Silence - Gotta get that ballad track in there! I am deffo vibing with this one, could join the ranks of Pieces and What Am I To Say in terms of classic Sum ballads
Hell Side:
Preperasi A Salire - Something of a transitional filler track, which tbh is pretty much what I expected - really like the Rise Up vocals coming in with it though, that was a nice surprise
Rise Up - it's a banger, your honour
Stranger In These Times - funky intro. Love the tension building in the pre-chorus, and the chorus itself does indeed fuck
I Don't Need Anyone - darker tone off the bat, we like it. Go the fuck off, Dave, hell yeah!!!!! That guitar solo got me feeling like Kaiba getting obliterated
Over The Edge - one of Dreamworks' most underrated pict- oh, edge, sorry, misheard you there. Real pump-up chorus, I dig it
House Of Liars - sliding in with some kickass guitar wails. Cool atmosphere to this one
You Wanted War - oooh, i like the intro here. Channeling those 13 Voices/Screaming Bloody vibes. Guitar solo is very cool, but doesn't top the one from I Don't Need Anyone
Paint It Black - oh this is straight up a cover, then. Well I can't say it outclasses the original Rolling Stones track (just 'cause, y'know, it's iconic) this is nonetheless a very cool heavier interpretation
It's All Me - FAST! ENERGETIC! YEAH! Huh, maybe this is the track that should have been called Time Won't Wait. Dave & Tom back at it again with guitar solos that FUCK HARD. ...Were those last couple of notes a reference to a DTLI track? Sounded super familiar
How The End Begins - Oh, some of these lyrics are going for the throat huh. Caught between a memory and visions of what could be. Damn. Given this is ostensibly the swan song for Sum 41 as a whole, it's got a lot to live up to, but it does be living up it though
Well. Wow. They definitely went out with a bang. I can see myself listening through this a lot in the weeks to come.
Downsides? Some. We know conceptually this album began when Deryck was asked to write some songs for other artists and/or to be bonus tracks on an anniversary addition of All Killer - these ended up being tracks on the Heaven side and it does feel like you can tell which ones they are â if I had to guess, I'd say those were Landmines, Time Won't Wait, Dopamine and possibly Not Quite Myself. Time Won't Wait in particular felt a little bit disjointed, lacking a bit of that Sum 41 personality. That said, songs like I Can't Wait, Future Primitive and Bad Mistake are awesome enough to lift up the Heaven side by a fair margin.
With the Hell side you could argue that with Preperasi being really just an intro to Rise Up and Paint It Black being a cover that we're really only getting 8 heavier Sum songs here, not 10... however, those 8 are all really fucking good. If I had to single one that I wasn't as keen on it'd probably be House Of Liars, but who knows, that one has the potential to grow on me over time.
I think the Hell side is stronger overall, but I'm definitely glad that this did end up being a double album - with Sum disbanding after this, it gives something great to end on across the gamut of their fanbase - those who prefer the oldschool pop-punk stuff, those who prefer the heavier stuff, and indeed those like me who are here for all of it.
Overall though, this whole record is chock full of bangers. While I'm certainly sad to see Sum 41 go, this was an exceptional note to end on.
