#Technically the answer is yes.#To vastly oversimplify#in Hatian Vodou a person is not one individual self but multiple soul-selves#including public/private & head/body divisions and more.#In this case the relevant actors are the autonomous & private “ti bon anj” & the corporeal selves#When a “bokor” (witch/sorcerer) makes a zombie they separate the 2 w/ the former as a “spirit zombie” & latter as the usual “zombi cavadre”#or zombie of the flesh. The former is trapped in a jar & can be used for spiritual power while the latter is used as compliant slave labor.#So what might be called a ghost & zombie can come from the same individual person as the spirit zombie & zombi cavadre respectively.#Technically there is little overlap between horror movie zombies & the folklore but I researched that for a systematic theology course.#This is a vast oversimplification -- please read the linked paper; it is utterly fascinating.#She also was a major source in the ReligionForBreakfast video#Youtube

Japanese Q Speedround: Google Is Right There
Hi, it’s mod Rina. It’s time to speedrun some asks.
@troublsomeidiots asked:
I'm writing a character who is both black and Japanese and lives in japan in a primarily Japanese area and wanted some help in writing a person who is biracial who lives in primarily homogenous society? Like what kind of struggles she would face, especially as a person who has never met anyone who is black other than in passing?
Open Youtube. Hit search bar on Youtube. "being black in japan" "half black half japanese in japan" "black hafu in japan". Try different combinations of keywords. Bon voyage.
(neither Marika nor I are Black. We will not be speaking to experiences we do not have.) (we can outsource to some of our friends if you ask a specific question. These are not specific questions.)
(Black Japanese readers--please feel free to comment if there’s something you want OP to know!)
@layzeal asked:
Hello! I have a question regarding family/last names in Edo period Japan. My story takes place in 1816, my character was born in 1796 from a commoner family (that she gets separated from a few years later, and in a different country).
I've read that regular people in Japan didn't adopt the use of family names until Meiji restoration, but I'm not sure how true that is. Would a family of commoners in that period carry a family name, or would they only use their first names? And any idea if that family would have to present a last name when moving/passing by a different country that does use them?
It's important for me to know, since the existence of a last name or not would quite heavily influence how hard it'd be for the family to meet again, and which means would be used. Thanks in advance!
When I gave Google some keywords from your query, the second result explained how pre-Meiji commoners without family/clan names used bynames to distinguish themselves, and gives additional data on them. Maybe give it another Google?
@weavefeather asked:
Hello, I am a writer and I really need some advice. I am wotking on my book since a few years, maybe 2 or 3, and I finally got the points together how it could begin. My plan is that my MC (named Nanami Kudo) is an lawyer of the FBI and has to go to her homecountry Japan, beacuse they send her to foreign investigations about a syndicate of people..... And the some things happen, like her brother who still lives in jp doesn't really welcomes her, some complications with the police and so on...
But thats not the point! Im really struggling to take in words how she gets to the other country, leaving her home behind and her partner she worked with. Do you have any advice on it, maybe how to structure it, some words or scenarios that fit?
How she gets to the other country: …..She flies there.
How US government agents/workers relocate and what the experience is like: That's your job to google. We are not government agents. Try anecdata on reddit, reddit AMAs, and Quora.
It’s unclear what her relationship/proximity to Japan is. What kind of nikkei is she? Is she mixed race or monoracial? How much Japanese can she speak? So many unknowns. Go read our Japanese tag and appreciate just how many ways one can be a Japanese person. Until then, you are nowhere near close to being able to write a nikkei homecoming plot.
Lastly, you are the author. Give us scenarios yourself and come back to us.
In Conclusion
Guys, you all gots to google some more. It’s beneficial to both of us: not only do we get to help with more specific things and have enough info to do so, but you don’t have to wait months until your ask comes through the backlog only to receive an answer you could have researched in anywhere from a couple days to 3 minutes.
~ Rina
“But Rina, I don’t know how!”
You’re in luck!
First, try one of our own post on Google shortcuts.
Second, stay tuned for some very relevant posts...

Injustice
In 5 days will mark a month since I've started to relapse in depression.
Last night,I felt more than hopeless and was playing way too close with fire.Searching the purpose of life, the "why" of all of this;even though I'm a christian and I know my purpose,I sometimes tend to ignore it and my brain is like "this is the part we are going to hide from you even though you might really get hurt".So yeah, not a great night per say.
Then I watched a video from someone one YouTube, someone that I have been following for nearly 5 years. This person is the easy target, mentally he has strong and out of the box opinions, physically he is like a person in the emo/alt universe from 2009.You get it why he is an easy target now?
So he posted a video on which he was opening up about his struggles for 2 years of bullying, harrassment because people were accusing him of doing/having done really bad things, but the thing is he is innocent. There has been huge misunderstandings, things taken out of context and just hypocrisy from a lot of people that literrally want him DEAD. This person has been on the verge to do something irreversible for a bunch of ignorant, trash people not even taking time to hear both sides or even do a 2 second research on you tube. And during all of this 2 years no one contacted him publicly to defend himself, to explain the things so he took matters in his own hands and made a 7hour video and more videos after that, explaining A to Z behind all of these non-sense accusations,he reached out to lawyers and none of them took his case because "it wasn't interresting enough",he was told innocent by the law literally, and after all of this he still gets threat/death messages. He was attacked in his own house! This type of actions were done by middle schoolers/high schoolers in my days. And now we're talking about about 20+ people acting the same.
In the end, what happened was that I gained this rage in me,I experienced the same kind of ignorant people all my life for whatever reason that was trending each year, for haircut,my body,my teeth,my basic modest styles and alt styles, for the fact that I was studying, reading, did not use social media, did not have a phone in middle school. All of these almost killed me a few years ago.Even though I kind of understand the sickness of this world,it was never this physical and this dangerous.
So my brain reacted in a strange way,and I got a lesson out of this injustice. Are you gonna live your life for ignorant,close-minded,people who think they are God and can make in such danger a life of someone?taking revenge on an innocent that happened to be an easy target?nah, not for me anymore.Everytime from now on,someone acts this way towards me,I would've ignored and look away, taking their lack of neurons and emotional intelligence as Gospel to my life, now I will look at them in the eyes and see them as they are,a bunch of useless monsters in my life.
I have red spiky hair,I'm not showing enough skin for them,I look cold,I go out with no friends,I have scars from up to toe. Then what?
I'll never let you in,it's long enough,I take back my life right now, like Bon jovi said "it's my life,it's now or never and I ain't gonna live forever" I know who I am in the eyes of God,my identity is not in who you think I am,I am who He says I am.
By the way, just with the way you act and think toward people and me not understanding why someone would go so low and do such hideous things, show me who has a pure and innocent heart.Face it, who is better between me & you.
Ps:all of this is part of what I think, without any filters because sometimes you have to be crude for people to realise things.

Youtube’s digest: A twenty-first century cookbook
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… Remember when you had to tune in to catch an elusive show starring Julia Child and her sophisticated recipes, or in France, Maïté and her folksy wisdom? Right, me neither to be fair, but now you can just tune in onto Youtube! This time in my youtube digest, we’re going to explore the evolutions of cooking videos and then I will tell you about my digital “bonnes addresses”!
So, cookingtainment has been a thing for quite a while actually. It might even surprise you to learn that the first cooking shows were broadcasted on radio up until the 1940s! The first show recorded in the US was The Betty Crocker Cooking School of the Air, which started in 1924. Interestingly enough, this goes to show that cookingtainment was intertwined with advertising since its beginnings (and vice versa, the first cinematographic ads were for bottled water), because the show was centered around Betty Crocker, who was both a fictional character and a brand. However, this genre really took off with Julia Child’s magnum opus The French Chef, which debuted in 1963.
There are countless cooking shows, but most of them revolve around common traits, which can stack on one another or be self-sufficient. For instance, you have shows that tend to be more instructional, those which hinge on celebrity chefs (like Kitchen Nightmare), the competition shows, and what has been called “food porn”, which relies entirely on excessive displays of food. This later form was adapted to the early(ish) era of Youtube, no celebrity was there yet and instructional videos were not well produced enough, not spectacular enough, they lacked, so to say, the recipe for viralness - and viralness was the name of the game back in those days.
Thus sprouted channels like Epic Meal Time, wherein the sole interest lied in humongous amounts of food to cook and eat - watching this in 2011 felt like watching weird homemade bacchanales. Eventually, youtube became more tamed and advertis..uhm viewer-friendly, and thus appeared channels like Binging with Babish. Then started the “fake instructional-true entertainment form”. It’s a rather natural developpement if you think of it, cooking something has in-and-of-itself a narrative structure (i.e. a beginning, some obstacles, and an end). But it's not about cooking a random dish, whether it’s in the DIY style of Babish or the laid-back professionals over at Bon Appetit, it's about cooking something people can’t really make at home to make them dream and salivate and like and subscribe. Hence, this kind of content appears relatable, while at the same time being pure entertainment ; despite being highly commodified it’s brilliant!
Despite the inescapable commodification that lies within all creation under the capitalist mode of production, I am still an avid viewer of cooking shows and would gladly share them with you! First off, you’ve got the wackiness of Ordinary sausage. Have you ever wondered what.. well.. anything would look and taste like in sausage form? Wonder no more, over at Ordinary sausage some guy realized that dream for you! Now if you’re looking for really good, truly feasible dishes, then I’d advise you to check out two channels, one being J Kenji Lopez-Alt’s channel. He’s a great cook, a food researcher and a teacher of his craft. He often cooks while wearing a go-pro on his forehead showing you how to make a meal from A to Z, with many useful tips and bits of knowledge for many recipes. If you want some middle eastern food, then Middle Eats is a channel for you. Some recipes may still require a bit of effort, but they try their best to offer easy and makeable recipes.
Bon appétit ! PS : I really haven’t even scratched the surface of the subject, especially when it comes to political discourse around food and food entertainment. If you want to go further, I highly recommend those two essays : Cooking Food On The Internet For Fun And Profit - Folding Ideas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EXVrzOACv4 Why Are Cooking Shows? - We're In Hell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i3zKU8Q6ZI William Renard

Someone requested a romantic Tommyinnit x reader at a haunted house, but I accidentally deleted it, so here!
Pairing: CC!Tommyinnit x Gn!Reader (romantic)
Haunted Hause
"I'm scared."
Tommy mumbles it into your ear, pretty much wrapped around you. It's like he's hiding behind you with the way his arms loop around your waist and his head is laid down on your shoulder.
"I'm going in with you." You remind him. "It'll be fine."
You're staring at the scariest haunted house in all of Britain. Wilbur and George had to pre-buy tickets for it, that's how in demand they are.
The problem was that Tommy, to be short, didn't do well with horror. Neither did you, but you knew you had to be here so he didn't chicken out.
"Come on lovebirds! Let's go!" Wilbur yells.
"Tommy." You say, smile evident in your voice.
He takes a deep breath before standing up with his persona on.
"Right. I am scared of nothing, ever."
"Of course not." You respond easily.
You head inside, Wilbur poking fun at Tommy the entire way. Somehow the two adults didn't seem scared at all.
"You two go first." Wilbur says, grabbing you and shoving you in front with Tommy.
Immediately he grips your hand tightly. The anticipation was definitely affecting the both of you.
"YouTubers, huh?" The ticket lady asks when you show the digital tickets. "Well, good luck."
"Wilbur, hold my hand." George says.
"Of course, George. Anything for you George."
While following the line, not even in the true haunted house yet, it gets darker. There's a clear transition between the ticket area and the haunted house, light purple wallpaper transitioning to concrete.
Concrete that was smudged a suspicious red.
"Who do we have here?!" Someone crows on the other side of the barrier.
They're dressed like a scientist but with smudges of blood all over them. Honestly, they look like an experiment went wrong. Of course the haunted house would have good costumes.
"Two couples?" He asks, eyeing them. "The others will be so pleased by this..." He continues down the line, making taunts to others.
Behind you and Tommy, George and Wilbur laugh.
"Did he just mistake George and Wil for a couple?" Tommy asks you.
"I think so." You laugh, throwing a glance at the duo behind you. "You're such a cute couple guys!"
"Thanks!" Wilbur exclaims.
"Cheating on Dream already, George?" Tommy teases.
You relaxe a little at Tommy's nerves rescinding, happy to bounce off his teasing.
"Who's gonna tell him?"
"Wilbur's Gogy's boyfriend now, he should do it."
"All of you shut up." George grumps, making you all laugh again.
The bantering passed enough time to reach the front of line, where everyone quiets down a little. Even Wilbur, who you knew loved going to haunted houses, seemed a little nervous. Guess that's what happens when you go to the scariest haunted house in all of Britain.
"Two couples... yes... I can work with this..." The lady scientist says, and Tommy's back to gripping your hand tightly. "One couple in that elevator, the other in the second!" She suddenly yells. "Go! Go!"
You and Tommy don't hesitate to speed walk into the first elevator.
"What the fuck?" He asks. "I didn't realize we'd be separated."
"Good thing you and Wilbur are recording." You say, nodding to the camera he had to strap to his chest.
"I don't like it."
"I'm sure-"
You get cut off by the lady standing right outside the elevator that you had entered.
"The other scientists are going to love you two! Try not to die like the last ones, alright? Bon voyage!"
The door slides shut, leaving you both in complete darkness. After a second the elevator starts to shake, getting more and more violent while an alarm sounds.
"Run!" A voice screams. "They got out!"
"Containment breach. Container A, B, and C have been unlocked." A robotic voice reads out, monotone.
"Oh God, it's coming for us! Doctor Banner, take the research and run!" The first voice screams.
"What about the new subjects? Subjects 1 and 2 are headed into the containment sector while 3 and 4 are going to the lab!" A woman asks.
"Leave them! If we want to get out of here alive, we need to go now!"
The voices stop along with the shaking, that horrible alarm still sounding.
"I am not scared." Tommy announces.
The death grip he has on your hand says otherwise, but you don't call him out on it.
"Holy shit." You breathe.
The door slides open, making you both jump.
"You first." Tommy pushes you slightly.
"Fuck no, I came here willingly for you. You're going first."
"Please. Please!"
Goddammit.
Slowly, you take the first step out.
From there it's a shitshow. Constant jump scares, but a really good story. All of the costumes and scenery are really engaging, especially when there's little audio clips. It's really well put together in a completely terrifying way.
At one point an actor jumps out unexpectedly, causing you to flinch and cling onto Tommy's arm. He just clings back, scared beyond belief.
After what feels like forever, you meet George and Wilbur in some type of lobby. While you and Tommy came from one set of doors, they came from the other. George looks downright terrified while Wilbur looks nonchalant.
"I guess we just leave, right? Then we've escaped?" Tommy asks, motioning to the door with his free hand.
"Not so fast." Someone says from behind.
You all turn around to face what looks to be a zombie, blood dripping from his mouth. He stumbles closer, a crazy grin on his face.
"You're not one of us, are you? Not yet. Those scientists never got their hands on you... but I will."
He leaps forward, sending the group back a few steps in fear. The zombie doesn't stop advancing, grabbing your arm quite gently.
Right, you signed some contract saying they could grab you.
You allow yourself to be taken away from Tommy, his eyes going wide as your hands disconnect. If you really wanted to, you could get away. The zombie's grip on you was barely there, just enough to suggest the idea of taking a few steps backwards. Either way, you're scared and take the steps.
A flash of light fills the room, and the guy holding you lets go and vanishes.
"Are you alright?" A woman asks. She's dressed as a scientist, even more battered, bruised, and bloodied than the ones you had seen previously. Well, the living ones. "Damn zombies... get out of here while you still can. I can't leave until I get the research I need."
Then, she runs through the door you and Tommy had come out of.
Tommy wastes no time before grabbing you and forcing everyone out of the haunted house.
The sunlight hits your faces, a stark contrast from the dimly lit haunted house. You breathe in the fresh air for a moment, letting your eyes fall shut. Never again.
"I am going to kill you, Wilbur." Tommy chokes out, and your eyes open again.
"And that's my cue to get the car." He says, wisely sprinting to the parking lot.
"Tommy, that's the last time I let you drag me into something without telling me what it is first." George says passionately. "I saw things I don't ever want to see again. I'm going to the bathroom." Then, after a second, "It'll be a good vlog."
The second that they're gone, Tommy pulls you into a tight hug.
"Toms, you're shaking." You point out, hugging him back.
"The zombie took you."
Oh, fuck. To him it must've seemed like the actor had ripped you away from him.
"He was barely holding me, I'm okay." You reassure him. "I let go of you and stepped back out of my own free will."
"I didn't like it." He says bluntly, but at least he's stopped shaking. "I didn't like any of that fucking haunted house."
"Neither did I." You admit.
Suddenly, he pulls away with a smirk. "I deserve a kiss."
"What?" Startled, you laugh.
"You scared me, and now I deserve a kiss."
With a stupid smile, you lean up and kiss him.
"WHY DO I ALWAYS HAVE TO SEE YOU TWO BEING STUPIDLY IN LOVE?!" Wilbur yells, pulling the car up. "I HATE IT."

this what i think bts love language is
a/n: this just my thoughts besties i ain’t do no formal type of research or nun just let my lil imagination sprint 🥸🤪
namjoon:
physical affection/words of affirmation
okay so i said physical affection for one bc like he seem to like initiate contact with people around him a lot
like in interviews he be having his hand on whoever next to him thigh or like when he be performing if it’s someone next to him he throws his arms around them a lot
not to mention like whenever jimin or jk or whoever start feeling up on him he never rejects it or makes a face or anything like yoongi does he just accepts it
like there’s so many stage clips where jimin will come and rest his chin on joon’s shoulder and he just lets him
or jk will just start touching on him some way grabbing his arms or sumn and it doesn’t phase him at all
another example is like on day 2 of sowoozoo when tae randomly came and linked arms with him and hobi during mikrokosmos hobi was like 🥴🥴 but joon was just 😌
and then there was that magic shop muster moment when jk was talking about how much he loved joon and how he was his beginning you know as president of the joon fan club does and namjoon couldn’t help but to go over and give his number one admirer a hug you know the moment
same thing with compliments he lowkey be eating them up
like you know how whenever hobi gets complimented he be like “😶 don’t say those things” joon don’t do that
like when they was asked to take their jackets off during the butter shoot and namjoon was like yeah okay and everyone started hyping him up and he was just 💁🏼♂️😜
and again on day 2 sowoozoo when he pushed his hair back from his forehead and everyone went OHHHHHSWJJSJS SEXY NAMJOON and then he decided to murder us all by tilting his head back on top of that adding insult to injury i would insert the picture but for my mental health i will not
and again whenever they talk about him being such a great leader he never shies away from it doesn’t cringe always accepts it so you know it must mean a lot for him to hear those things
aside from that tho he’s such a poetic person
like he is definitely involved in an intimate affair with language so there’s no way he wouldn’t appreciate you verbally telling him how he makes you feel
like just think about how many times he’s said he wants to sit down with each army and listen to their story
that being said if this was your man i think you’d definitely have to both show and tell him how you feel
like if he was about to head out for work you definitely got to kiss him before he leaves
and if you on the phone with him the last words you’re saying are i love you
and he’s definitely gonna cherish it each time always gonna have that cute little smile dimples caved in his cheeks bc you love him and he feels it
seokjin:
acts of service/words of affirmation
alright so ngl the reason i said acts of service for seokjin is like almost 100% based on his reaction to tae setting up that birthday event for him where he had his friends send him messages
he talked about it for WEEKS like he was genuinely so moved that i just like he has to love it
and then there’s like how much he bothers jk to like do simple stuff like i’m specifically thinking about that one moment in bon voyage 4 when he was sitting down at the table and called jk to help him up
and then there’s also little things he does for others like when he peeled tae’s tangerines for him or when he offered to feed yoongi bc he was driving or how he always offers bites of his food before even gets a chance to taste it
now i say words of affirmation bc he always searching for a compliment
my minds going to when jk hurt his foot and jin was pushing him in the wheelchair and kept feeding him lines to say about how he was such a good hyung and how he loves him
or in the behind the scenes for the boy with luv video and he kept tryna get tae to compliment him for being witty
and my boy never misses a chance to introduce himself as worldwide handsome
even though he does a lot of those things jokingly there are moments when he’s serious too about giving compliments and shy when he receives them like in those be interviews when he called jk a singing genius and jungkook was talking about how he had the most range and he got all ☺️☺️
or that moment from in the soop when he was comforting yoongi about like not having regrets and when yoongi told him he wanted to be like him just those kinds of moments let me know words are important to him
which just made me remember how hard he tries with his lyrics and how important they are to him like when he was writing awake and he talked about how he kept getting rejected but he was super insistent bc it was important for him to sing the words he wrote and don’t even get me started on moon i just-
anyway jin done said many times he is a man of the present so if you’re with him you gotta actively show/tell him
if you’re at the store pick him up some gummies
if you know he’s got a long day ahead of him maybe pack him some snacks to take with him in the morning
if his hair looks nice tell him
send him messages throughout the day even if he can’t respond immediately
he claims he’s a man of the present but whenever he takes a moment to reminisce the past he’ll look back and know just how much you care about him
yoongi:
quality time/acts of service
listen as much as this man loves spending time alone the time he spends with others means a lot to him
like how he always go fishing with jin even tho he ain’t particularly fond of it
or how like in in the soop he had made plans to play games with jimin and did so extensively
also from in the soop when he had spent most of his day outside reading but then he had heard everyone starting to make the theme song and immediately ran to get his equipment to record and what not
not to mention his poem from the end of that one run episode where they went on like a mini trip or whatever and he was like “what a relief that we have seven members. what a relief that we have each other.”
like being all together is important to him
like i just think about that one scene from one of they movies ion remember which one but they were all gathered around the table and it was when he had told them how he actually hurt his shoulder and they was talking about how they was worried about jk and how he need to come out his room and it’s not even the content of the scene but just like the fact that he ain’t have to be there but he was
and also can’t neglect to mention how he whined for y e a r s about how ain’t nobody come to visit him on set when he was filming the videos for his first mixtape like mans wouldn’t let that go and then how touched he was when they made appearances on his daechwita set even if he couldn’t express it properly
and how he begged for them to make cameos in the video and how happy he was when jin and jk did
and he doesn’t ever forget to mention whenever him and hobi hang out he’s like yeah we went for a drink and dinner and talked and blah blah
he loves it when people make an effort to be around him
now acts of service i got this all on a whim okay like… listen… we all been there we have all watched an ideal type video on youtube don’t lie okay
and up there it be like he want someone to bring him food in the studio and take care of him and stuff like that and in this case the math maths
you really can see that in how he treats others
like just the other day i saw a gifset somewhere and the boys were like yeah yoongi always takes care of us he don’t make eye contact tho
not to mention how he always cooks for them when they go on trips
and even though he ain’t give seokjin his song yet we know it’s coming! eventually!
and whenever they be ganging up on jungkook yoongi always the first one to be like “stooooppp you gon make him cry”
my baby just always be doing little things for others to show he cares okay 🥺
so if you got with my baby you gotta take care of him 🥺🥺🥺
he really needs someone that understands him bc he not gonna say anything
if you’re all hanging out together make sure you’re by his side so he knows you want to be there with him
if he’s busy stuck in his studio drop by even if you just end up laying on the couch he’s gonna appreciate you just being with him
and bring food my baby getting buff he need all the veggies and protein he can get
hoseok:
receiving gifts
i really had to think about this one but once i connected the dots yeah it makes total sense
like he looooves shopping loves getting stuff so when other people give him stuff i know he just 🥰🥰🥰
hobi lights up when he gets gifts they don’t always have to be big but i know he very much appreciates them
like how in the army corner store festa video when asked to bring something meaningful to them he brought those figurines which was the first gift a fan gifted him
which makes me think about how those limited edition figurines dropped and hobi was like i need to get one for namjoon and then namjoon was like i need to get one for hobi and so they ended up with like two of them or something like that
also from festa in the little photo booth mission every time he won a prize he was like yaaasss omg and was thinking of ways to put it to use like when he got that picture frame he immediately stuck them film strips in it he probably got it hanging in his room or in his studio by now tbh
and i think it was on the canada run bts episode where jk bought him those slippers and he was super happy
even when they were in hawaii and him and jin were hungry on the bus and he asked jin for gummies like ofc jin had to get on his nerves first but when he finally gave him his snacks he went from 😐 to 😚
or how he still has that change purse that namjoon bought him in malta (probably still got the money in there too tbh)
speaking of malta got me thinking about how tae went out of his way to win hobi that flamingo bc he said he’d never seen one and when tae gave it to him he went parading it around telling everyone that tae won it for him and then said he was gonna put it in his studio
and he got that chicken leg pillow they gave him from you quiz on the couch in his studio
and i think it was from the 2020 winter package he was so happy when jin bought him those ugly little troll elf things with the hat you know what i’m talking about
and he commented like three times when jungkook drew that picture of him for his birthday
and we know mans be giving gifts too
like how he got yoongi that coffee truck on the set of daechwita
and when they were on the speak yourself tour and he went out shopping on a day off and bought jin a sweater or something
and how he slaved through like 2 or 3 lives making bracelets for the members and then gave it to them on the bang bang con live
and the most devastating one of all when they had to give each other gifts i think it was on the run episode with all the water games but i could be wrong anyway and like most of them gave each other gag gifts like their merch or whatever but hobi gave jimin (and the rest of the members) a cd for his song promise it had a little photo book in it and everything 😭😭😭
so like whoever gets with this fine specimen gon have to throw a few dollars together to make sure this man is kept
not really i’m sure he doesn’t expect you to sell your car for a gucci peacoat or your soul for a rolex
but if you did decide to save up for some time to get him a little extravagant gift i know he’d more than appreciate it
more often than not though it’d be the little things that got to him like if you bought a simple t shirt from the store but then kinda like upcycled it drew little doodles on it wrote “i’m your hope” somewhere on it there would definitely be a picture uploaded of him on weverse or twitter wearing it
or if you decided to compile the pictures of you two together into a scrapbook or something he’d keep it somewhere accessible like in a drawer in his desk in his studio and flip through it with a little smile on his face when he’s missing you
and even if it was something even smaller than that like say he mentioned in passing that like idk he was out of eggs or something and you bought him some he just might marry you
jimin:
physical affection/quality time
the first thing that comes to mind with this for jimin is how he comforts his boys
like there’s so many behind the scenes clips from tour where like jk or tae will be upset with their performance and crying and jimin would be the one to come up behind them and hug them and wipe their tears
same concept for that one moment in bon voyage 3 when they told him that tae was crying and he just kinda hugged him and wiped his tears and hovered around him to make sure he was okay
or when they left hobi at the gas station in bon voyage 4 and then went back to pick him up he still hugged hobi even as he was laughing evilly
also in bon voyage 4 when they went on that helicopter tour and they was on the mountain and him and tae tackled each other and was rolling in the snow
and he is just like always in jk arms like he just jumps on him for no reason like in that video where lee hyun is acting as one of bts’ management
also in the behind from i think when they were practicing for the 2019 bbmas i believe at some point jungkook was holding that man spinning him in circles or sumn like that
and there’s also that one comeback show when him and tae were in the comic book cafe and they were just cuddled up together looking at tae’s phone practicing english i think
and on that one joon live when him and tae crashed and just caused a whole lot of commotion i’m pretty sure at one point they were cuddled on the couch and then jimin told tae his breath stinks and tae proceeded to open his mouth over the air purifier
anyway clearly he is a man with hands
but he also is someone who loves to spend time together it’s important to him
like i just think about how when they had their “break” back in 2019 he talked about how he just traveled the entire time and he went with various friends and family
and i’m pretty sure it was bon voyage 3 when they were doing their friendship trips and trying to make fresh pairings or whatever he was like i don’t think there’s any surprising pairing with me and it’s like… that’s true
like you got minimoni, minimini, jikook etc… all tried tested and true man gets around his band
and he’s the main one who’s always like “yeah bro we should live in the dorms until we’re 50”
and he always talks about how he can’t be alone and how he’s always gotta be doing something with someone
and his lives!!! his lives!!!! when he spends time with us it’s always so intimate and personable
like you can’t tell me that i ain’t have dinner with him and jin after a show in the hotel room and we drank off camera even after the staff told us we couldn’t 😤🤚
there’s also that time he went live and someone said they had some kind of condition and then he took it upon himself to look it up and try to find treatments
just liiiike whenever he goes live every minute counts bro and yes this is me trying to summon him bc we ain’t had a solo jimin live since october and i know they super busy but i miss 😓😓😓
so for this mans i just feel like you just gotta really be with him
just like he makes every second count you have to as well
like he’s gonna want to have your full attention and you’ll definitely have his he’ll be obsessed with you tbh
however he doesn’t always have the time and his schedule definitely isn’t the most accommodating so he’s gonna want someone to put in the effort
but as long as you make sure he knows you’re all in he’ll always meet you halfway
taehyung:
words of affirmation
now this one has been stated explicitly multiple times and he’s admitted it himself
specifically during let’s bts in their segment within the segment and namjoon was like taehyung the kind of person who grows from compliments
and i ain’t even got the right words to express how i feel about the smile he couldn’t help when hobi had them all tell tae that they like him
not to mention the story he told during the festa video last year about how he always tried his very best to get hobi to praise him and how disappointed he was when hobi didn’t get it
and i may be tripping but didn’t like earlier this year he didn’t post on weverse or twitter for like a month or so because he wanted to keep seeing us say how much we miss him???
and in bon voyage season 2 when they had to write letters to each other and he wrote his to jimin and then cried when he read it
there’s also a moment in bon voyage 4 when he and rm were about to sleep in the same space and he asked joon if he could cuddle him and joon was like 🥴🤚 how bout no and tae was like you do like me right? and rm was like yeah of course but let’s not cuddle bro
also in that weverse magazine interview they did he talked about how depressed he got when they weren’t able to perform and he only felt happy for a while when he was able to communicate with us
and in turn he’s very verbally supportive as well
like at that one fan sign they was talking about bon voyage and they asked army which season they liked better 1 or 2 and someone said 1 and taehyung was like “😐 now why would you say that bc namjoon won’t even in that” even though really it was only like 1 or 2 episodes he missed out on
and like he’s always hyping seokjin up like when they were doing the map of the soul 7 comeback live and jin was talking about how he wasn’t a good dancer and taehyung was like 😡 don’t say that bc it’s not true you’re good and you always been good
and in the let’s bts thing again it was important for him to let jimin know that he likes him best like they really are best friends y’all 😭
and when he talks about how much he loves suga’s raps
and that moment in the soop when he set up a date for him and jungkook to talk out whatever tension they had or whatever
and how during those individual be interviews he had hobi flustered when he complimented his passion for music
and he always be saying like the most comforting stuff on weverse letting army know he’s there as a source of comfort at all times even when he can’t be
like this man is literally the creator of borahae meaning that we’ll love and support each other for a long time
so if you get with tae communication is key!!!
you gotta tell him how you feel about him
if you’re out and about and see something that reminds you of him? tell him. if you like his hair that day? tell him. if he does something that pisses you off? tell him. if you miss him? tell him. if you love him? tell him.
like y’all gon talk about everything and nothing at all some days you’ll be discussing aliens and parallel universes other days you’ll be like discussing the future of your relationship
and ya know he a busy man so you not always gon be having long and drawn out heart to hearts so i think he’d love it if you just sent messages throughout the day something that let him know you were thinking of him even if it’s just a picture of a possum you chased down or if you spammed him with tiktoks you thought he’d like
he’d be looking at his phone like 🥰 thinking about how much he loves you
jungkook:
physical affection
now this lil menace right here is touchy
always down for a cuddle
like on the canada episode of run when they were about to pick out rooms and he was like firmly latched onto hobi on the couch while they waited
and when they were practicing home for the magic shop muster and yoongi sat in the arm chair and immediately jk sat in his lap and tae sat in his lap
or how in in the soop after they were done eating he just went and latched onto jin’s back
and how tae had went to go wake jk up that one time and they ended up falling asleep
or how jk had went to wake up jimin that one time and they ended up falling asleep
there was just a lot of jk cuddles going on in in the soop so i’ll move on
let’s talk about the pool water debate run episode where in the end jk decided to latch onto jin’s back yet again
i’ll take this moment to mention the jinkook moment that lives in my head rent free for no valid reason it’s from the life goes on countdown video where they were reading the post cards and he was wearing that big pink sweatshirt and jin was wearing that pink and black bomber jacket and jk just grabbed jin’s arm and held onto it and played with it and when he was done he just threw it away i… i think about that moment a lot there’s an entire section in both my head and heart dedicated to that moment anyway continuing on
i’ll talk about that time they were backstage for a show and they had them blow up mattresses and suga was minding his business resting and jk just rolled up and moved his legs and laid beside him and then hobi decided to pile on top
and whenever they’re on stage he’s always the most delighted when joon would suggest a hug he’d be the first one over there nose scrunched up giggling he loves it
there’s also many instances in interviews and lives where he just can’t keep him hands to himself
just like that last butter live when tae ended up with a crown of forks thanks to mr kook
and he never misses an opportunity to feel up joon
which makes me remember that time he kissed namjoon on the forehead
and he is just always carrying jimin for some reason
so in conclusion… physical affection
and if he was your mans you’d be on the frontlines of receiving all he has to give
not necessarily in public or around a lot of people but in a space where you both were comfortable yes
you’d just have to accept that when you’re standing around he’s going to give you a shoulder/neck/back massage for no particular reason
and he will latch onto you in different positions for extended periods of time
and you gotta do the same! like that’s your man! go give him a hug! a kiss! let him know you love him
cuddle up to him while y’all chilling watching tv
hold his hand while y’all talking
just like grab onto him and never let him go
he’ll be hoping you don’t

Do you have any thoughts on the use of AAVE for Nile (or lack thereof) in TOG fanfiction? I've been reading some Book of Nile fic and some writers seem to write her as a Millennial™ (using words like "fave" and "woke") but never acknowledge her Blackness in her patterns of speech. I know we don't see her use as much AAVE in the films, but I would argue she's in situations where code-switching would be valued (first in a "professional" environment in the army, then around a group of non-Black strangers).
Hi anon! I have many thoughts on this and I'm honored you asked me! But I should start by saying I'm white and any thoughts Black fans and especially Black American fans have on this that they want to share would be beyond lovely. (I'm not gonna tag anybody bc that feels rude but please add onto this post if any of y'all see this and want to!)
The main reason I personally avoid AAVE for Nile in my own fics is because I'm not Black. But Nile-centric fics by Black writers tend to avoid using much of it too, at least from what I've noticed/understood, and my guess is it's largely for the reason you mention, that she's in situations that encourage code-switching.
In movie canon Nile is highly competent at tailoring her language to each situation she finds herself in. This fantastic linguistics analysis meta shows how skillfully Nile chooses her vocabulary and grammar to meet her goals with different conversation partners in different contexts. In comics canon Nile had a bunch of different civilian jobs before joining the Marines, so she would've had experience code-switching in the ways that made sense for all those different contexts as well as the Marines and her family and high school and wherever else she spent her time before we met her. And now she's spending her time with a handful of immortals none of whom are native English speakers and a fellow Black American but one with a Queen's English UK accent whose professional experience is in the CIA where high-status code-switching is often an absolute must for success or even survival.
Fics featuring Nile are charged with extrapolating from that to how it might show up in her use of language that she's coping with a traumatic separation from her family and her career and pretty much everything she's ever known and now she needs to be able to make herself understood to people who seem to care about her and each other but are super duper in crisis, three (soon to be four) of whom predate Modern English entirely and the only one who's anywhere near her contemporary she's not supposed to talk to for a century. All of these people are telling her that pretty much any contact with any mortals poses an existential threat to her and the rest of the group. How the FUCK is she supposed to cope with that, like, generally? And would it be a more effective way for her to cope if she talked to Andy Joe and Nicky using the speech patterns that she used to use with her mom and brother, to at least retain that part of her identity even if it means having to do a lot of explaining, or would it meet her needs better to prioritize Andy Joe and Nicky understanding what she means with her words over using the particular words and grammar forms she used with her family?
I've seen several fics, both Nile-centric / BoN and otherwise, explore this a little bit in how/whether Nile uses Millennial™ speak. It's often a theme in Nile texting Booker despite the exile because of the popular headcanon that he as The Tech Guy is the only other immortal who understands memes. But Nile's much-younger-than-Booker mom probably uses Boomer and/or Gen X memes and Andy has been adapting to new communication styles for forever as evidenced by her canon high level of fluency with standard-American-accented English.
Which brings us back to people avoiding AAVE because they're not Black and they don't want to make mistakes (or they're not Black and they don't want to get yelled at for making mistakes, though I think many people overestimate how much they'll get yelled at while underestimating how much these mistakes can hurt). I can imagine some Black fans hold back from using much AAVE in fic because they don't want to share in-group stuff with white people who are likely to then adopt and ruin it, as white people so often do with Black cultural stuff. Some links about this including a great Khadija Mbowe video. I'm saying this gently, anon, because you might not know: woke, an example you cited as Millennial™ speak, is AAVE, and that's gotten erased by so many white people appropriating it and using it incorrectly online.
And also there's the part where fandom is a hobby and you never know when you're reading a fic that's the very first thing someone's ever written outside of a school assignment. This cultural considerations of language shit takes a level of effort and skill that not everybody puts into every fic, or even could if they wanted to because they haven't had time to build their skills yet. It's definitely easier for non-Black fans to project our millennial feels onto Nile than to do the layers of research and self-reflection it requires to depict what Blackness might mean to Nile, and it's not surprising that often people sharing their hobby creations on the internet have gone the easier route. There's not even necessarily shame in doing what's easier. It's just frustrating and often hurtful when structural white supremacy means that 3-dimensional Black characters are rare in media and thoughtful explorations of them in fandom are seen by the majority of fans as not-easy to make and therefore Nile Freeman, the main character in The Old Guard (2020) dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood, has the least fic and meta and art made about her of our 5 main immortals.
I've been active in different fandoms off and on for twenty years and I barely managed to write 5,000 words about Sam Wilson across multiple different fics in the 7 years since I fell in love with him. There's an alchemy to which characters we connect with, and on top of that which characters we connect with in a way that causes us to create stuff about them. Something about Nile Freeman finally tipped me over the edge from a voracious reader to a voracious writer. It's not for me to judge which characters speak to other individuals to the level of creating content about them, but I do think it's important for us to notice, and then work to fight, the pattern where across this fandom as a whole Nile gets way less content, and way less depth in so much of the content that's in theory about her, than any of these other characters.
Anyway, back to language. My two long fics feature Nile with several Black friends — Copley and OCs and cameos from other media — but all of those characters except Alec Hardison from Leverage aren't American. It's very possible I'm guilty of stereotyping Black British speech patterns in I See Your Eyes Seek a Distant Shore. I watched hours and hours of Black haircare YouTube videos in the research for that fic and I modeled my OCs' speech patterns on what I heard from some of those YouTubers as well as what I've heard people like John Boyega and Idris Elba saying in interviews, but the thing about doing your best is you still might fuck up.
I'm slowly making progress on my WIP where Nile and Sam Wilson are cousins, and what ways of talking with a family member might be authentic for Nile is a major question I need to figure out. For that, I'm largely modeling my writing choices on how I hear my Black friends and colleagues talking to each other. I haven't overheard colleagues talking in an office in a long-ass time, but back when that was a thing, I remember seeing a ton of nuance in the different ways many of my Black colleagues would talk to each other. Different people have different personalities! And backgrounds! And priorities! A few jobs ago my department was about 1/3 Black and we worked closely with Obama administration staff many of whom were Black and there was SO MUCH VARIETY in how Black people talked to each other, about work and workplace-appropriate personal stuff, where I and other white coworkers could hear. There are a few work friends in particular who I have in my head when I'm trying to imagine how Sam and Nile might talk to each other. From the outside looking in, God DAMN is shit complicated, intellectually and interpersonally and spiritually, for Black people who are devoting their professional lives to public service in the United States.
One more aspect of this that I have big thoughts on but I need to take extra care in talking about is the idea of acknowledging Nile's Blackness in her patterns of speech. There's no one right way to be Black, and Nile's a fictional character created by a white dude but there are plenty of real-life Black Americans who don't use much or even any AAVE, for reasons that are complicated because of white supremacy. (Highly highly recommend this video by Shanspeare on the harms of the Oreo stereotype.)
Something that's not the same but has enough similarity that I think it's worth talking about is my personal experience with authenticity and American Jewish speech patterns. My Jewish family members don't talk like they're in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I've known lots of people who do talk that way (or the millennial version of it), some of whom have questioned my Jewishness because I don't talk that way. That hurts me. Sometimes when another Jew tells me some shit like "I've never heard a Jew say y'all'd've," I can respond with "well now you have asshole, bless your Yankee-ass heart," because the myth of Dixie is a racist lie but I will totally call white Northerners Yankees when they're being shitty to me for being Southern, and this particular Jew fucking revels in using "bless your heart" with maximum polite aggression, especially with said Yankees. But sometimes I don't have it in me to say anything and it just quietly hurts having an important part of me disbelieved by someone who shares that important part of me. The sting isn't quite the same when non-Jews disbelieve or discount my Jewishness, but that hurts too.
Who counts as authentically Jewish is a messy in-group conversation and it doesn't really make sense to explain it all here. Who counts as authentically Jewish is a matter of legal status for immigration, citizenship, and civil rights in Israel, and it's my number 2 reason after horrific treatment of Palestinians that I'm antizionist. But outside that extremely high-stakes legal situation, it can just feel really shitty to not be recognized as One Of Us, especially by your own people.
It can also feel really shitty to be The Only One of Your Kind in a group, even if that group is an immortal chosen family who all loves each other dearly. Sometimes especially in a situation like that where you know those people love you but there are certain things they don't get about you and will never quite be able to. I'm definitely projecting at least a little bit of my "lonely Jew who will be alone again for yet another Jewish holiday" stuff onto Nile when at the end of I See Your Eyes Seek a Distant Shore she's thinking about being the only Black immortal and moving away from the community she'd built with a mostly-Black group of mortals in that fic. Maybe that tracks, or maybe that's fucked up of me.
Basically, this got very long but it's complicated, writing about experiences that aren't your own takes skill which in turn takes time and practice to build, writing about experiences not your own that our society maligns can cause a lot of harm if done badly, it can also cause a lot of harm when a large enough portion of a fandom just decides to nope out of something that's difficult and risky because then there's just not much content about a character who deserves just a shit ton of loving and nuanced content, people are individuals and two people who come from the exact same cultural context might show that influence in all kinds of different ways, identity is complicated, language is complicated, writing is hard, and empathy and humility and doing our best aren't a guarantee of avoiding harm but they do go a long way in helping people create thoughtful content about a character as awesome and powerful and kind and messy and scared and curious and WORTHY as Nile Freeman.

What made you ship taekook iydm telling
Well... it started with a ship video that was on my YouTube recommended (i had seen other ship videos before this but non-piqued my queer interest). Yes it's from the much hated Taekook-Lives channel, but I was intrigued...
youtube
Because of it, I looked at other videos from other taekook youtubers:
SEVANTE
Lisa Sun
Bangtan Shippers
Imagine Us
아케나TK [akenaTK]
taekookilicious
Peachlesslyyy
AnalisandoTaeKook
winter. maize
ansitless
But whilst I was intrigued, I was't 100% convinced, as I was always aware of the queer baiting that goes on in K-Pop. So I did my own research (as everyone should), I watched Run BTS, Bon Vovage, Bombs, episodes, concerts and fan cams and vlives as well has searching out facts claimed in the videos.
I watched to enjoy the content, but I could also to see from what was being expressed in those content that correlated to what was being expressed in the Taekook videos on YouTube.
So.. I was convinced.

Friend!
How are you?
HI DOVE! I have no idea when you sent this so sorry if it’s like 4 months late. ANYWAYS...
I am doing pretty good! I finished the school year with all As, so I’m proud of that. I got a job at a summer camp (these kids are hell sometimes) so I’m making money and I’m gonna buy a car which means FREEDOM (sort of). I’m planning another trip to Philly (and my friends and I are thinking of going there for prom house) and a trip to Asbury park (because I wanna play pinball). I haven’t really been doing AMREV stuff but I got to the highest level of the history competition for my documentary about the Trent Affair and I got the President’s Award from a Civil War Round Table in my state (I might post it to YouTube soon). My historical society that I made is doing really well. We’re doing a good amount of events and we have a lot of stuff coming up for us, which is really exciting. I joined the Arts and Humanities Academy at my school which I’m SUPER excited for (especially since my history teacher from this past year runs it). I plan to go to Virginia in like November and do a whole bunch of stuff there for research and enjoyment purposes (for both amrev and acw). Marching band season is coming up which means I’m gonna be busy busy busy, especially since I’m brass section leader this year. I know I said I was gonna go to Williamsburg for my birthday but I went to see Paul McCartney instead and it was AMAZING. My seats got upgraded so I was even closer than I thought AND Bon Jovi AND Bruce Springsteen performed. I couldn’t even believe that it happened. I feel like that was probably more than you needed to know about my life lol
How are you doing?
#i just ranted about what's happened for like the past 5 months#im exhausted but it's totally worth it

My Top 10 Favorite Songs From Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart: Concept Album and Movie
Here I will rank my top 10 favorite songs between the movie and concept album versions of Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart. I personally believe that the French concept album songs are quite different from the translations in the English movie, so I will rank them independently. That means that one song may end up on this list twice for the reasons I will explain as we go down the list. Let’s start from number 10:
10. “Mademoiselle Clé”
As simple and intimate as this scene in the movie is, I’m going to have to put the French version on this list. Mainly because it stays a bit more true to the scene in the novel which is much less PG than the movie. The French song shares the line “...she works her Blue Fairy magic on me, like in Pinocchio, but more real. Except it’s not my nose that’s growing longer.” The implications of that quote in the novel and the French song are obvious, but are much more loosely intimated in the film. Also, I simply prefer the composition of the French album song over the movie version.
You can find the French song from the concept album here on Dioysos’ official Youtube channel and the scene from the movie here on a fan’s Youtube channel.
9. “Tais-Toi Mon Coeur”
This song can only be found in the concept album and corresponds more directly to the plot of the book than the movie. The title means “Be Quiet my Heart” (or, more aggressively, “shut up, my heart”). It is such a catchy song and the old music video associated with it has a really cool animation style which some hoped would have been the style of the entire movie, but alas.
You can find the official song here on Dionysos’ official Youtube channel and the music video here on a fan’s Youtube channel.
8. “Flamme A Lunettes”
There are actually three versions of the song “Flame with Glasses” because it also shows up in the book. The book version is quite short, and is actually the most similar to the movie for that reason. However, the song in the concept album encapsulates more of the action in the novel itself, not just the song that Miss Acacia sings. Additionally, the imagery in the song from the album is much richer and Jack and Miss Acacia’s banter goes on for a little longer. Even though the scene in the movie is visually intriguing and captures some of the imagery with its setting, I’m going to have to put the album version on this list.
You can find the French song from the concept album here on Dionysos’ official Youtube channel and the scene from the English movie here on a fan’s Youtube channel.
7. “L'école De Joe”
“The School of Joe” can only be found in the movie in its instrumental form, so I don’t want to make a direct comparison to the lyric version in the album. However, I don’t think I have to. Both incarnations capture the same menacing energy and climactic build, and what the movie may lack in lyrics it sure makes up for in the scene. And while I hate to put Joe nearly halfway up my list, the song is just too powerful to put any lower.
You can find the French song from the concept album here on Dionysos’ official Youtube channel.
6. “Malagueña”
Doing the research on the Spanish songs in the album and the movie sure gave me a run for my money because I had no idea about the multilingual talents of Olivia Ruiz. She both voices and sings Miss Acacia in the French movie, the concept album (which is in French, of course), as well as the Spanish songs in both (if not all) of the translations of the movie. Her version of “La Malagueña”, a traditional Mexican Huapango song, was originally covered on two of her albums [1], and is of course identical in the concept album and the movie because there is no need to translate it. It was tough for me to choose between “Malagueña” and “Quijote”, but for the wonderful and fantastical elements surrounding it in the movie and for the great references to quotes from the novel during the scene, “Malagueña” makes it on this list.
You can find the song from the concept album here on Dionysos’ official Youtube channel and an amazing live performance of it by Olivia Ruiz here.
5. “Le Jour Le Plus Froid du Monde”
Thanks to this Youtube video and the fanart included in it, “The Coldest Day on Earth” was the first song I ever heard from the “La Mécanique Du Cœur” concept album and was how I discovered the movie in the first place. I have always been an enthusiast for anything vaguely steampunk, and a rhythm set by cuckoo-clocks is exactly the kind of song I’m looking for. Once I figured out what the French lyrics actually mean, I knew I needed to find out more about this weird world. It took me exactly two years to get my hands on a copy of the book after watching the movie, and I discovered the entire concept album around that time as well. Perhaps this song should be number one on this list because it is literally the reason I have this blog to begin with, but I just can’t deny how much I love the other songs at the top of this list.
I also can’t fail to mention the sort of reprised version of the song, called “Le Réveil Des Coucous Vivants”, or “The Awakening of the Living Cuckoos” which makes an appearance very early in the movie, but is actually the last song on the concept album. If you want to experience an amazing example of how cuckoos can be used as incredibly haunting musical instruments, I recommend you check it out.
You can find the French song from the concept album here on Dionysos’ official Youtube channel here is the link to “Le Réveil Des Coucous Vivants” on their channel as well.
4. “La Panique Mécanique”
I absolutely love how much this song builds and how it captures the experience of traveling on a train alone for the first time. This song does make a shortened appearance in the movie during Jack’s train ride, but I’m not a huge fan of how they altered the lyrics. Another thing that makes the French album version so much more striking than the English movie version is Alain Bashung’s [2] performance of Jack the Ripper’s lines. His voice is so mysterious and menacing and creates the perfect bridge into the chaotic latter portion of the song. Perhaps it is my relative lack of exposure to a variety of French voices, but his rendition just hits different than the English one in my opinion.
You can find the French version from the concept album here on Dionysos’ official Youtube channel. Unfortunately I can’t find a good link to the scene in the movie, so you will have to do some digging yourself if you are interested.
3. “Jack Et La Mécanique Du Cœur”
In third place is the French concept album version of the titular song “Jack Et La Mécanique Du Cœur”. It is the very first song on the concept album and serves as a sort of summary for the plot and kind of resembles a Greek chorus [3] that speculates what our protagonist Jack is going to do. It includes some interjection from Georges Méliès and ends with him saying “Et maintenant, bon film” (”And now, enjoy the film”), which I find very cute since it’s sort of like we are watching Méliès’ own film adaption of the story, which he tells Jack during the movie that he could very well make.
You can find the French concept album version here on Dionysos’ official Youtube channel.
2. “Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart” (English version from the end credits of the movie)
Maybe this is a cop-out, but I just couldn’t decide which version of this song to put on this list, so I included both. After much deliberation, I decided to put the English version at number two instead of three. It seems sacrilegious somehow, but I just had to put it a little higher for a couple of reasons. One, I discovered it first so it lodged itself in my consciousness before the French version did, and two, I just can’t get over Orlando Seale’s voice in this song. Of course Mathias Malzieu is completely unparalleled, but there is something about Seale’s optimistic and gallant tone that is completely enrapturing.
It’s sort of a bummer that this amazing song only shows up at the very end of the credits, but I must admit it is a difficult song to place anywhere else in the film considering the inexplicable presence of Méliès (which makes it hard to put at the beginning for the sake of the plot). But, it also doesn’t make sense at the end since it’s a summary of what we just watched and the final line tells us to “enjoy the film” as the last few credits roll up on the screen. Regardless, I should be happy that the song was ever translated into English because I can thank it for keeping my interest and passion for the story alive.
You can find the English version here on a fan’s Youtube channel.
1. “L’Homme Sans Trucage”
And finally, number one. You’d think “Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart” would have taken this spot considering how much I went on about it, but “L’Homme Sans Trucage” (”The Man Without Special Effects”) from the concept album has an absolutely tangible feeling of adventure and boundlessness with instrumentals that are out of this world. Who else but Dionysos can mix record-scratching, keyboard, banjo, drums, and more simultaneously and make it sound that amazing? The song perfectly captures the “coming of age” theme of the story, and the imagery in the song is beyond inspiring.
I also need to mention the reference in the title and in the chorus to Méliès’ diary in the story which he titled “The Man without Special Effects” (or “The Man Who Was No Hoax” per the English translation of the novel). That diary in both the movie and the novel is Méliès’ retelling of his time spent with Jack (which is why I think putting the song “Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart” in the beginning of the movie would be so cool) and is emphasized a bit more in the novel than in the movie. That diary makes a sort of legend out of Jack, and its title implies entirely different layers of meaning between the movie and the novel.
To give the movie some credit, though, the scene is a lot of fun, and I love how they styled it à la Méliès with paper cutouts and the reference to “The Impossible Voyage” [4] by the real Georges Méliès. The scene stays true to the surrealism of the story, and is definitely quite enjoyable. But, in the end, I have to give “L’Homme Sans Trucage” the number one spot on my list.
You can find the French version from the concept album here on Dionysos official Youtube channel and the scene from the movie here on Shout! Factory’s Youtube channel.
There are 31 tracks (including interludes) on the complete “La Mécanique Du Cœur” concept album, so of course I couldn’t include them all here. The styles and tones of each song are so unique, and I think the entire album is worth a listen. I first listened to the entire album roughly concurrently with the plot of the novel, and that was a pretty great way to experience it, in my opinion. But, if you’re like me and you aren’t exactly fluent in French, it’s not like you’ll get many spoilers from the songs.

nobody asked but here i analysed polygon’s “unraveled” and bon appetit test kitchen’s “gourmet makes” and i think they are similar and use three key story elements to their success | a 1.9k word long analysis by an unhinged creative writing fresh grad trying desperately to use their degree to connect two dots
If you asked me who my favorite internet celebrities are, I would not hesitate for a second to answer. Brian David Gilbert from Polygon and Claire Saffitz from Bon Appetit Test Kitchen. They’re awesome! They both host popular YouTube webshows about video games and cooking respectively, two things I am terrible at and don’t do very often. And yet I am enraptured by every episode of their shows. Why? How?
My thesis is this: Polygon’s “Unraveled” and Bon Appetit Test Kitchen’s “Gourmet Makes”, while wildly different shows on many levels, are extremely similar in how they use three key story elements very, very, well.
These three story elements are 1) Plot, 2) Character, and 3) FAWWIEOT (it’s an acronym, I’ll explain it later, I promise)
Let me start with the first and most basic story element these two shows wield amazingly: Plot.
Plot is, in simplest terms, what “happens” in a thing. This is what you’ll find on a movie’s Wikipedia page summary, the details of what went down, the events that took place, the things that occurred. There are many different types of plots because there are many different types of stories, but one of the most basic kinds of plots is very clearly illustrated by something called Freytag’s Pyramid.
Freytag’s Pyramid is a very simple plot that is moved forward by a non-negotiable in many, many stories: conflict. All is well, the line is straight, then a challenge arises and things start to escalate. At the climax, a decision or a group of decisions are made that leads to a de-escalation of the conflict, bringing things down until we are back at a flat line and the conflict has been resolved.
Every single episode of Gourmet Makes can be plotted onto Freytag’s Pyramid
Nearly every single episode of Unraveled can be plotted onto Freytag’s Pyramid too (with the exception of some, like a number of the categorization episodes, the Kojima name generator)
I know what you’re thinking. “So what if Gourmet Makes and Unraveled fit on some funky pyramid? What does that mean?” Well, dear reader, it reveals to us just one of three reasons why these shows are so enjoyable.
Freytag’s Pyramid is basic as shit, and yet it is one of the first plot structures taught to fictionists because people, up to this day, like it. Why? Because Freytag’s Pyramid fulfills two very important desires that we, as humans, love. 1) The desire for there to be a problem and 2) the desire for that problem to be resolved. It scratches our eternal itch to want to watch shit go down but doesn’t leave us up on a cliffhanger, it gives us our catharsis.
Gourmet Makes gives you the entertainment of watching Claire struggle with her task. Then Gourmet Makes shows you Claire slowly and surely rising above the challenge (notable in literally every episode of Gourmet Makes). Unraveled makes you watch BDG work himself up into a frenzy trying to do something stupid, but then Unraveled shows the payoff of...of watching BDG do something stupid, but this time towards some kind of resolution (very notable in the latest Unraveled “How to increase your stamina with terrible video game tactics”).
It is clear to me that Gourmet Makes and Unraveled both use plot in a way that gives viewers satisfaction. But what keeps them coming back for more?
Well that leads us to the second story element: Character.
People love Claire Saffitz and BDG.
Don’t believe me? Look through the tags of literally any gifset of either of them. Here, I did it for you. Here’s some tags for Claire:
And here’s some tags for BDG:
It’s pretty obvious to see that these two are well loved, but why? It’s not just because they’re both good looking, it’s because Claire Saffitz and BDG, with how they are presented in their shows, are good characters.
Claire Saffitz in Gourmet Makes isn’t scripted. She brings her own human frustration, determined hard work, and joyous glee to the show and it makes watching the show all the more enjoyable. BDG in Unraveled, however, is scripted, but he brings to the table his chaotic performance and ‘off the shits’ lecturer energy that brings the viewers in. Regardless of their differences, Gourmet Makes and Unraveled are similar when it comes to character because of one thing: they actually have characters.
What am I talking about? Well, for a period of time on the internet, people in the cooking media sphere and the video game media sphere settled for video content that was divorced from who was presenting the information. Videos like the ones from Tasty where everything was filmed top down and you only saw two hands perfectly putting ingredients into a bowl. Videos like the myriad of video game walkthroughs or video essays that are presented only by a disembodied voice who also seems allergic to actually having fun. This is content that hinges on the fact that people like seeing cooking or video games and that the presenter will mostly just be a background thing.
Bon Appetit Test Kitchen and Polygon both did not want to succumb to this style of presenting information. They both made the decision to bring their presenters into their video content, highlighting their respective presenters’ personalities, quirks, and styles. This is evident in all of Bon Appetit Test Kitchen and Polygon’s video content, not just Gourmet Makes and Unraveled. Do I watch Bon Appetit's show It's Alive because I want to actually make foccacia? No, it's because I love how Brad Leone mispronounces words and makes me laugh. Did I watch "Fixing Anthem’s boring mech’s with ballsy design" because I actually give a shit about video games? No it's because I love how Pat Gill jokes about fake testicles and also I think he's hot.
The fact that there are actually characters for us on screen to see, makes Gourmet Makes and Unraveled good shit. We’ve got a plot with clear conflict, but that means nothing if there are no personas for us to root for. Gourmet Makes and Unraveled gives us these personas. They give us Claire Saffitz whom we want so desperately to see smile and succeed. They give us Brian David Gilbert whom we want so desperately to see go a little bit crazy. They give us people to connect to, and that often bridges the gap to viewers who honestly don’t give a shit about cooking or video games. Viewers like me who just keep coming back to Gourmet Makes and Unraveled because of the fact that these are characters I care about, these are characters who I want to see smile after finally nailing the recipe or slowly take off their suit as they tell me shit about Zelda I don’t understand.
Gourmet Makes and Unraveled utilize plot in a way that makes these webshows satisfying, and they use character in a way that makes these webshows accessible and keeps people invested.
But they go further.
This brings us to our last story element, not exactly a common or rudimentary one, but an important one nonetheless: Fucking Around With What Is Expected Of Them.
(I know there’s probably a legitimate literary term for this, but sue me, quarantine has kept me stuck in my house since March, so I may have forgotten the exact words I learned in class. FAWWIEOT will have to suffice.)
The gist of FAWWIEOT is that stories have been around for fuckin ever, and because of that, there are clear patterns and tropes that stories follow. FAWWIEOT is the recognition of those patterns and tropes, using them, but finding a different outcome or flair to make themselves special, to make themselves stick out. Kinda like when you’ve got a fic on AO3 tagged with ‘friends to lovers’ but also tagged with like, I dunno, something completely random like ‘character is also a dragon’. Use the tropes, but do something different. Give the audience something they already know, then throw in something new to make them remember your content specifically.
Gourmet Makes and Unraveled FAWWIEOT (I’m using the acronym like a verb now, this is my post, I’m allowed to) very purposefully using an important technique: Flaws.
The standard trope of a cooking show is the chef easily talking to the camera as they perfectly put the ingredients together. All the food comes out perfect on the first try and everything is heavenly and wonderful. Classic cooking shows like Barefoot Contessa (hosted by Ina Garten) and Everyday Italian (hosted by Giada de Laurentiis) followed this pattern, and it made for good television.
But who fucking watches television these days? Everything is online now, and the internet is vicious. If you aren’t interesting, the internet will throw you out to the gutter. So how did Gourmet Makes set themselves apart?
By showing you that things aren’t perfect after all. Gourmet Makes shows you every trial that Claire tries, they show you her successes, but also her failures. They show you when she gets tired and hopeless, they show you when she bounces back and tries again. Gourmet Makes made a cooking show that was flawed, and people loved it.
And what about Unraveled? The design of Unraveled, from BDG’s suit and mug to his presenting style, key us in to the fact that we are watching some sort of lecture. Some kind of educational performance. Personally, this makes me think that Unraveled is FAWWIEOT-ing academia and basically any other media where an “expert” talks at you.
The standard pattern of experts talking to you are basically like TedTalks. You have somebody very well versed in the topic trying to explain to you something, showing you their hypothesis, their process, and their findings.
Unraveled FAWWIEOTs expertise by making BDG research the most crazy shit like OSHA regulations or the Geneva Convention, make the wildest hypotheses like ‘Monster Energy in the morning will be a good idea’ or ‘Sonic is blasphemous’, and then, ultimately, completely unravel himself. The expert in Unraveled isn’t an all knowing being who is always right, he is flawed (and loses his marbles, more often than not.) And we love it.
FAWWIEOT-ing is key because of how it gives us a pattern we know, and then does something new. Novelty is important on the internet, and Gourmet Makes and Unraveled have made a name for themselves on the unique way they Fucked Around With What Was Expected Of Them.
Gourmet Makes and Unraveled are two of my favorite webshows on the internet as of now, and there are many reasons why, many reasons I didn’t include in this post. What I wanted to do here is to highlight how these shows use story elements to be good content because at the core of these videos, even if they aren’t literary fiction, they are good stories. Good stories with a plot that satisfies us, with characters we can see and love, with new twists that keep us on the edge of our seats.
Good stories make for good content, and Bon Appetit Test Kitchen and Polygon have me as a subscriber for as long as they continue on this road.
Thanks for reading!

Hi eryka 👋🏽I’m so confused. With Bon Appetit youtube channel returning to life, I don’t get why people are pissed with the BIPOC representation?? I get that they screwed up when they didn’t offer their existing bipoc staff respectable video contracts leading to their departure. I also get that its weird to hire poc for new videos when they could have used the past poc staff like rick priya etc and agreed to their demands. But what I don’t get is why people are shitting on ba for these recent...changes on the comment section😰 ps: I live in india so I’m not up to date on this.
Hello!! This is a very good question thank you!
So I did my research and went to the comment sections and it's much nicer than I thought itd be. The dislike ratio is tragic but honestly that's to be expected. I'm going to speak for myself here but my opinion doesn't seem to be that different from what a lot of other commenters are saying so here we go.
I'm not really unhappy about representation in videos as much as I'm upset about the fact that it seems like BA is sweeping all of their awful treatment of poc under the rug.
For me any hope I had for the media side of BA (or conde nast entertainment I guess) was shattered when they refused to pay poc equally for their video appearances. They were told about where they were doing wrong, looked at that flaw and essentially decided to not do anything actually productive about it, instead they did a weird little dance that made it seem better but was really just a cop out.
So their decision to bring in new poc really just feels cheap and performative at this point. [Like they literally payed a company to legally say there was no racial discrimination in the workplace (ie hired Prosauker Rose, a notorious union busting company who doesn't do the right or thorough work to check if there are poor practices in the workplace for context but you could maybe listen to the sporkful reckoning at Bon Appetit podcast if you want more details I think?).]
So really I don't think they've changed at all, they're just a corporation that's looking to make money off of this appearance of diversity. Also we don't actually know if the new video hosts are actually being payed equally (they're probably not actually if they're new, there's more room for them to be taken advantage of) and it just seems like BA sees poc as replaceable dolls they can switch in and out.
Anyways uh tldr we hate BA because they don't actually care about poc this all a facade to seem 'diverse' without actually putting in the effort to treat these people equally. I also want to add in that the new video hosts at BA deserve absolutely no hate at all because they're just trying to get some work in a global pandemic yknow? (although the comment section seemed pretty positive towards the hosts so :)) The company however can rot.
Also: some comments that also just sum it up pretty well

#I just took a nap and woke up... Apparently I only respond to things at 11pm sigh#Thank you for your question I think it's a very good one and perfectly reasonable! :) I hope this helped#Also thank you for the patience I've been waiting to get into the mindset of being able to answer it :)#Answered#Anon#Uh I said new hosts because the old hosts that stayed have no respect from me 🔪✌️#Also ansjdkd catch the dickachu Jesus#Bon appetit

Author Spotlight: Kuhlaine Day 2
Author: @kuhlaine
Share one of your strengths.
Personally, I think my dialogue is one of my strengths! I'd like to think I write characters who sound believable. I try to read all of my dialogue-heavy scenes out loud to see how things flow. I also wrote a couple of one act plays in college so I've always been a bit more focused on dialogue when it comes to my non-fic writings!
Share one of your weaknesses.
I use way too many adverbs. Every creative writing professor I've ever had has called me out on it, and I've yet to learn my lesson.
Which fic has been the hardest to write?
Probably Even Then, Especially Now. It was a SUPER fun fic to work on, but keeping track of the dual timelines got a bit complicated at times. It was a delicate balance of trying to remember what the reader does and doesn't know at any point in time, and writing moments that make sense both with and without the context that comes up later on in the story. It was a really fun and rewarding challenge though!
Never Read the Comments was also a bit more difficult than I expected. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the timeline of when videos would be posted, and cross-referencing the actual Bon Appetit Youtube channel to see what types of videos performed well and how many views they would get on average, plus reading actual comments on different kinds of videos to try to find inspiration!
Which fic has been the easiest to write?
Six Feet Apart! I've been quarantined in my Brooklyn apartment since March, so that fic was just the rom-com version of what I've been doing since then.
Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?
It's a combo! I'm very lucky that writing is not only my passion and my hobby, but also my career! I write almost every day for work, and I love every second of it. But, I write fic throughout the day as a hobby to keep myself busy and creatively occupied. I spend a lot of my work day waiting for folks to get back to me with edits or assignments, so writing fic keeps me sharp and ready to dive into a new project at a moments notice!
Is there an episode or character or arc above all others that inspires you just a little bit more?
Kurt in general is the character that I think inspires me the most. I think he's a super well-thought out and compelling character with an equally intriguing back story. He's also the character whose voice/thought process I understand the best, and since my favorite Kurt pairing is Klaine, I find myself drawn to Klaine fic!
What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?
Write what you know! I know that's super cliche, but the most fun I've had was writing settings and stories that I know very intimately! Whenever I have to do research for a story I find myself getting bogged down by the details and familiarizing myself with everything I possibly can before I start writing. Sometimes I'll even spend more time researching than I do writing, because I become too caught up in trying to make sure I have every minute detail right.
What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?
Just sit down and write. This is more of a personal thing - I know that just getting a push from an outside force helps some people, but it's always been the opposite for me. The minute someone tells me to do something I don't want to do it anymore - I guess I'm a bratty child at heart. My mom always used to tell me to 'just go write something' whenever I was bored during summer or winter breaks. But I can't just write, mom! I need to be inspired!
I write whatever I want, whenever I want. Forcing myself to sit down and write never works for me, it just gives me a headache and a page full of incoherent ramblings.
If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?
Ooooo - I think I'd probably go with One More Day is Not Enough. I'd love to see the Kurt/Quinn confrontation play out on screen. Plus, I have a very detailed playlist of songs I listened to while writing that fic and I'd love to get to see those scenes play out with all of those songs that inspired me while I was writing!
What’s your process? Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order? Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines? What are the perfect writing conditions for you?
I always start with an outline! I had an awful habit of never finishing my fics when I was younger - and I also didn't outline my first fic that I started posting in 2018, Cross the Line. If I don't have an outline I get very easily distracted and start to lose my grip on the plot over time. My initial outlines are usually just complete stream of consciousness scribbles in my Notes app where the only goal is to get to the end of the story. From there, I type up a more presentable version of the outline into a Google doc. I don't always stick to my outline, I'll sometimes tweak or shift certain storylines, but I always stick to the general arc of the story, which is what's most important. This is just super helpful for me because I always know where the story is going next - if I don't figure that out from the beginning, I'll write myself into a corner.
Personally, I can't write things out of order because I'll start to forget which details I haven't introduced yet, so I always start from the beginning! I almost always have a chapter or storyline I'm really excited to work on, so having something to look forward to helps motivate me during less exciting chapters, or when I'm in a bit of a slump.
Perfect writing conditions for me are standing at my desk (I finally invested in a standing desk after months of working at my awkwardly low desk, ha!) with a really awesome playlist and some iced coffee.

Check out Kuhlaine’s Fics
Six Feet Apart - Having to shelter in place in New York is already difficult enough, but when Kurt Hummel's roommate decides to head back to Ohio to ride out the pandemic with her family, things become infinitely more complicated. At the very least his new quarantine roommate, Blaine, isn't too bad on the eyes.
Never Read the Comments - In which Kurt Hummel, Blaine Anderson, and whether or not they're in a relationship, become the Internet's latest obsession.
Not Quite Friends, Not Quite Lovers - Kurt Hummel has very little faith left in the world. But, the world gives him Blaine Anderson.

Youtuber AU (warning: some spoilers)
(requested by @ladyofthelake13)
AU in which all (or most) of our favorite characters make a living as famous/semi-famous Youtubers/vloggers.
Yuya is a True Crime vlogger a la Buzzfeed Unsolved. Each week she researches old crimes and cold cases, adding in her own thoughts on the case and her thoughts on who really committed them. She started out the channel first as an extra credit project when she was still in pre-law but grew so popular that she started creating videos full time. She earns most of her money through merchandizing rights and by creating her own brand. Every now and then she delves into supernatural-type videos with her adopted sister Sakuya as co-host. Her adopted brother Nozomu helps out behind the scenes with editing videos and doing some camera work. One of the more popular aspects of her channel is when she brings her friends, other popular Youtubers, in as guests. There are even shipping wars among her followers on who she has the most chemistry with.
Benitora is a travel vlogger who travels all around the country trying out different local and specialized food/snacks, showing off various features in the geography and chatting with friendly locals. His prestigious family only allows his ‘frivolities’ under the excuse that he’s going out and building goodwill with the populace he will eventually be in charge of. Tora’s father is the leader of the country, something that Tora himself tries to keep quiet about. To finance his travels, other than the Patreon page he set up, Tora made a deal with his father Ieyasu: he can keep up a steady and consistent view count Tora can keep making his videos. As soon as viewership drops below a certain amount, he has to stop and resume his training to take over leadership. So far he’s been able to keep up his end of the bargain, but the looming future ahead of him is something that he’s never quite able to forget.
Okuni is a beauty vlogger who has inside access to some of the newest products about to hit the market. She regularly reviews the new and upcoming products, shares tutorials for both beginners and those who’ve been using makeup for a while on how to apply the perfect foundation, get expert wingtips, and how to match their particular color pallet for their skin tone. Okuni will bring in her friends, both women and men, to give them makeovers as well as to have them compete in different makeup challenges. So far, the most popular video on her channel is from when she let Hotaru and Shinrei give each other makeovers.
Yukimura’s channel comes across as half family drama and shenanigans and half prank channel. Saizo is largely his go-to camera man, but other members of his family take turns as well, lending to some...interesting footage that almost always ends up in the videos released to the public. Every now and then Yukimura will drop his own political takes into conversation, only to immediately start talking about something else as a distraction. There are rumors that he’s going to be running for public office as a bid to overthrow the current political power. There are also others who discount this theory stating that Yukimura’s not serious enough for the role and actually doesn’t have any interest in politics beyond his ‘hot takes.’ It’s goofy, fun-loving Yukimura, there’s no way. Yukimura himself loves to obfuscate this even further by going on regular shopping trips where he shows off the newest gifts he’s planning to get for his family...usually specifically for whoever’s holding the camera at the time, leading to a lot of back and forth with the cameraperson on exactly why they deserve these gifts in the first place.
Sasuke’s channel is largely an unboxing channel for various toys and other gadgets, usually ones he gets from Yukimura. He’ll also review the items based on how engaging or mentally stimulating he finds them. When Sasuke isn’t reviewing items he’s usually filming himself out in the woods exploring with his childhood friend Kotaro. The two friends run a side vlog documenting skateboarding, biking, and rollerblading tricks and stunts or hiking and camping trips they go on together. A popular series of videos the two friends have that has boosted their viewership considerably involves them showing off various sword stunts and tricks. Every now and then Benitora sneaks his way onto Sasuke’s channel, sharing travel tips and stories. Despite Sasuke repeatedly mentioning how annoying he finds the older man, viewers can’t help but notice that Tora’s never actually cut out of any videos he appears in. Every now and then Sasuke will post gaming videos that he plays with Kotaro and occasionally Tora; despite several requests, he insists he’s not a gaming channel.
Bontenmaru’s channel is almost exclusively dedicated to bodybuilding and workout techniques. Usually these videos include him trying to get his friends involved in working out or acting as their personal trainer. Some of his friends are more receptive to this than others. Whenever a new workout ‘challenge’ comes out, Bon will immediately make a video about it, either criticizing the challenge or pointing out the different ways that the challenge helps develop certain muscle groups. When he’s not making workout and bodybuilding videos, Bon can be found filming drunk hangouts with his friends. There’s a small subsection of his videos dedicated to reviewing workout clothes while trying to promote his own personal brand or workout clothing and accessories.
Akira’s videos are full of DIY tips and tricks as well as testing to see if other DIY videos hold up. More often than not the DIY videos he reviews are hilariously wrong, something he goes out of his way to prove and mock. When he’s not reviewing DIYs, he’s posting Let’s Plays to his channel. Akira is also a popular Twitch streamer, usually co-opting his friends into playing either Team Death Matches or pvps together. He likes to consider himself a cool and collected gamer, which admittedly he is to a degree. Whenever he has to be on the same team as certain ‘friends’ of his, though (Benitora, Hotaru and Akari, namely) he tends to lose his cool. If his friends annoy him too much, though, he’ll just bring them on as guests to try out the end results of his DIY videos.
Hotaru’s channel is about as chaotic and disfunctional as the man himself. His videos are almost completely unedited, excepting for a few special effects for when his brother appears on screen. He tends to get stuck with the label of ‘Travel Vlogger’ flor lack of a better description for his videos, which usually document the various places he finds himself whenever he gets lost. It’s become an in-joke and even a betting pool among his followers on where he’ll end up next with his videos. If he’s not out getting lost, he’s posting videos about random things that he’ll find interesting--various stray cats, an interesting bug he found, or even a few attempted prank videos on his brother Shinrei. For those who don’t get enough humor out of his videos, Hotaru’s twitter account is open and well documented, usually with various out of context posts or sporadic updates on where he is. He is well recognized on the Internet, if by name only, as a living cryptid.
Akari is well known as an influencer, posting her own beauty tips and tricks, local restaurant reviews, and even some humorous videos of her friends doing silly, stupid, and humiliating videos as a result of some kind of blackmail that she has on them. Every now and then her videos turn educational when she offers medical advice on how to treat certain wounds and injuries, usually because one of her dumb friends has that specific injury that she demonstrates with. Akari also has certain Opinions on a certain pharmaceutical company that she absolutely in no way has any connections with. She certainly never worked there at one point, and you can’t prove that she ever did.
Kyoshiro’s mostly known for his editing skills, being the go-to editor for his girlfriend’s sister Yuya’s channel. He has a few tutorials on how to edit videos together, though there are a few videos that are light skits that he does with his girlfriend Sakuya. He did a series at one point that was part tea-review and part gushing about Sakuya. He tries to stay out of the spotlight for the most part, but he’s not opposed to appearing on Yuya’s channel as a guest host...as long as Kyo’s not also guest hosting at the same time. He has a unique relationship with Kyo, where sometimes they appear to be best friends and in other videos as mortal enemies. No one’s quite sure what the relationship is between them, though there have been a few rumors floating around that the two are siblings. These rumors have yet to be acknowledged either way, however.
Kyo’s channel isn’t actually run by him. Every video that appears on his channel is something that one of his friends made and then uploaded for him. These videos usually take the form of boasting Kyo’s skills (usually made by Akira or Akari) or as group hangouts with his friend group. There are a few that were made by Yuya that are typically along the lines of “look what this guy did now” that are pretty popular and technically give Kyo the title of ‘influencer.’ Kyo is also known on the Internet as a type of cryptid, though not to the levels of Hotaru. Instead, he’s known as the kind of person you want to emulate, who men either hate or want to be like and who several women wish to date. There’s some speculation that Kyo may already be in a relationship with someone (typically Yuya, though she refuses to say anything about the subject). There’s some talk that there may be open warrants out for his arrest, but so far nothing about his alleged crimes or the man’s whereabouts has come to light.
