What do we think about Enzo Cilenti as Marius?
(Not sure how I’d feel about Childermass as a blonde but I want my guy to play a vampire.)
(Also watch Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. It’s the best magical regency miniseries ever made.)

A question I've been curious for a while regarding jsamn, and the @jsamn-20th-anniversary-readalong seems like a good opportunity to ask:

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell Memes for Volume 3.
What a trip lads.
I'm working on a non-meme post for this book but it may take time. Needless to say this story is still rotting my brain, it just happens to have finished telling it.

JSAMN 20 Readalong. Week 4. Chapters 20–22
Lovely: two chapters featuring Childermass! He and Vinculus make such a satisfying duo. When the gentlemen later claim there are only two magicians left in England, completely ignoring these two, it seems to be such a class-related thing. We already had a vivid picture of disposable Vinculus, and now Childermass has confirmed that Vinculus is indeed a gifted magician who had no chance to develop his talent (or he was just too lazy). We also see Childermass, in his shaggy clothes, posing as a milliner, serving his master but with a clear inclination toward rebellion. With his lowly origins and natural disposition for magic, I wonder what he could have become if he were a gentleman of means. In any case, it’s a mistake to disregard these two.
It’s interesting that instead of translating bâtons as clubs, Clarke sometimes calls them wands, which is very fitting for this magic AU.
Strange, the Knight of Wands, searching for his calling, is extremely amusing. All his motivations seem so misguided! But it’s good that he finally found it, especially since he truly has a gift. And it seems he’s managed to impress Arabella enough for her to finally agree to marry him.
Childermass reminds me of one of my other favourite characters—Javert from Les Misérables. They look similar, they serve, and they’re both terrible spies. But unlike Javert, Childermass has a rebellious streak, which is incredibly entertaining.

The sky spoke to him. It was a language he had never heard before. He was not even certain there were words. Perhaps it only spoke to him in the black writing the birds made. He was small and unprotected and there was no escape. He was caught between earth and sky as if cupped between two hands. They could crush him if they chose. The sky spoke to him again. “I do not understand,” he said.

Holy Innocents’ Day/ Childermass
Tumblr media
19th century depiction of a medieval boy bishop. Source: National Catholic Register website
Today is Holy Innocents’ Day, or Childermass. The feast day commemorates the probably apocryphal tale (although it does appear in Matthew’s Gospel) of the massacre of Jewish infants by King Herod, wishing to ensure the prophesied Messianic King of the Jews, rumoured to be recently born, did not grow into adulthood and threaten to overthrow Herod or his descendants. Given the evil nature of this day, it was held to be the unluckiest day of the year and one on which to avoid travel, new enterprises or any kind of labour. Also unlucky were the medieval children who were whipped by their mothers while they lay in bed, regardless of any actual transgressions, in memory of the slaughtered children but also as a prompt, perhaps, for them to behave in the New Year. This rather unfair custom was still going strong as late as the seventeenth century.
Childermass was also the last day of the Christmas season in which boy bishops would process through the streets in the Middle Ages, and give sermons in local churches to the accompaniment of church bells, rung to mourn the loss of those innocent lives.

Quote
Childermass knew what games the children on street-corners are playing - games that all other grown-ups have long since forgotten. Childermass knew what old people by firesides are thinking of, though no one has asked them in years. Childermass knew what young men hear in the rattling of the drums and the tooting of the pipes that makes them leave their homes and go to be soldiers - and he knew the half-eggcupful of glory and the barrelful of misery that await them. Childermass could look at a smart attorney in the street and tell you what he had in his coat tail pockets. And all that Childermass knew made him smile; and some of what Childermass knew made him laugh out loud; and none of what he knew wrung from him so much as ha'pennyworth of pity.
