Can anon from previous post please send some screenshots? I'm curious but I don't have twitter/x due to it being blocked in my country. I want to see what they're saying
It all started when people were hating on Bkub, the creator of Pop Team Epic, who had drawn Marina from Splatoon 2. They accused him of whitewashing for using a lighter palette.
Tumblr media
Which then escalated in someone making money off blackwashing edits since people don't think anime screenshots from an animated TV show is an individual's art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The English Dub voice actor of Okarun in the Dandadan dub, AJ Beckles (who is now on Bluesky), is in support of people blackwashing.
Tumblr media
Japanese users call out on Westerners hypocrisy and say that foreigners should bring POC into it as they just want to enjoy their otaku hobbies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And when people try to show off actual existing black characters in anime or pointed out how it's mostly used as a DEI checklist for companies, they get ignored.

I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

So you just admit when Westerners try to make original stuff that promotes diversity, it turns out shit? That nobody, not even the people it was suppose to cater to, will buy it? That there is not enough priority on the quality of a work? Instead of trying to improve, people would rather take someone else's work instead?
hate the argument against “black washing/brown washing” that people of color should just “make their own content” like…not…everyone has the capacity to do that? not everyone finds enjoyment in that. not everyone has the materials or the skill to do that. when you constantly have to make things for yourself, doesn’t it get fucking tiring?
not to mention, the things we deem “for poc” may not always be *enjoyable*, especially when written by…a white person.
we have to remember that poc do create, but oftentimes get quieted down because of their content’s supposed “wokeness .”
we don’t owe people explanations for that.
“But by making an anime character black/brown, you’re discriminating against asians!”
tans…exist. so do mixed people. and genetics is a thing - everyone has them, and you’d be surprised how dark/light some people can be! abt 99% of the time, poc artists who “blackwash” anime characters refer to THEIR version of the character as…*drumroll*
…mixed!! Generalizing a group just leads to prejudice!
Stop trying to dictate how POC consume media. Unless they are genuinely problematic, leave PEOPLE alone. the whole point of being in a fandom is to share a collective admiration and love of a piece of media … who cares if that means drawing a blasian Gojo?
tl;dr: let people have fun and keep their creative liberty. don’t like it? don’t interact with it that simple.

I really wish it was more common for people to draw anime characters as like, more obviously ethnically Japanese, or as darker skinned Japanese people, if that makes any sense? Anime does have a colorism problem, it's true, but like. That mostly affects Japanese people living in Japan that aren't super pale, not Americans.... there's American characters you could be drawing as black instead
Most Americans hate their own American stuff. And even when there is racebending like we see for the live-action Little Mermaid, live-action Tinkerbell, etc; It's never received well by people. Any other decent likes like John Stewart as Green Lantern or Static Shock, are not pushed up front. Maybe in a sense too, there's also implications of racebending certain characters. For example, let's say if you make Ed, Edd, and Eddy as black kids. The premise of the show is that the three boys have to scam others in the cul-de-sac to get money. The Ed boys are mostly disliked by the other kids. Edd is neglected by his parents as they only leave notes for communication and Eddy was straight up abused by his big brother. The implications for it can be messy. But then again, people even racebend other characters and ignore implications behind it like people making Crona from Soul Eater as black. You know, the character who gets ABUSED by his mother? Or making Power from Chainsaw Man black? The girl who NEVER showers, flushes the toilet, and is racist towards humans as she is a demon.

There is also the fact most Westerners want more realism in anime. Not just color skin, but hair style (with claims saying that braids and curly hair are only exclusive to black people), realistic noses, freckles, scars, etc.

Mainstream mob: "Blackwashing The Little Mermaid is fine, because it's a fictional creature...
BUT you can't whitewash Black Panther, cause his skin tone and origin are relevant to the plot "...
Tumblr media
Also mainstream mob: "Blackwashing Snow WHITE is totally fine, tho." - Even if the setting is clearly ancient GERMANY, it's written by the Grimm brothers, who where German, and she's literally called Snow WHITE. LIKE IT'S PART OF THE ACTUAL PLOT...
Tumblr media
"Oh, we can blackwash Hermione too, in the book her skin tone is never mentioned, even the author did not specify it".
THE GRIMM BROTHERS DID THO.
Tumblr media
AND OMG I JUST DISCOVERED. "We can blackwash a VIKING CHARACTER. LIVING IN SCANDINAVIA. IN THE MOTHERFUCKING VIKING ERA. YES."
Tumblr media
Just admit you have a double standard based on race (hate to tell you so, but it's still racism) and shut up. Please.
(Edit for the person who reblogged - Scandinavian is not a "race"... ofc the actors are not Scandinavian, but omg you KNOW what I'm talking about here, don't even pretend).

Motherfuckers who constantly complain about blackwashing or any other minority being cast in a remake and tell minorities to make their own stories need to shut the fuck up unkindly
Because I can guarantee not one of those dickheads ever watched
Canon Busters: The one time it did get social media attention on twitter the tag got taken over by some idiots who were crying to bring back some shit called The OA
Seis Manos: Netflix didn’t promote it at all so it’s mostly their fault but still
The Jellies, Lazer Wulf or Camp Buckooth: every time these shows were promoted here came annoying ass venture bros and Metalocalypse fans under every video commenting that these shows were trash and to bring back VB and Metalocalyps
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: which is doing semi fine but it’s still annoying when I see a promotion online and the comments are filled with “Bring back the owl house !” because you know they lost their show so they can’t let anyone else enjoy their shows
I’m A Virgo: everyone complained that it was ‘too weird’ but claim that they want different stories about black people that aren’t slave stories but turn their heads at black surrealism
Nope: People claimed it was too confusing and that they didn’t understand the story when the story and the message is absolutely easy to understand
It’s always “make your own stories !” yet they never help support those stories, they always try to hijack what little promotion or they just straight up ignore it or even when we do make our own stories they still complain and claim it’s “woke pandering” or “woke propaganda”

Imagine seeing black fan art of an anime and not thinking oh cute/cool and moving on.
No instead you get all in your feels and start spouting racist shit, make the VA for the main character who is black deactivate his account and dox a minor all because you didn’t like “check notes” the skin color an artist chose to use for fan art that “checks notes again” has no influence on the show at all.
Fucking pathetic. I mean that from the bottom of my soul.
I will never understand why people get so hung up on fan art. It doesn’t take away from the actual media. It’s equivalent to fanfic don’t like don’t read. Don’t like the art keep fucking scrolling don’t interact with it.
I see fan art I don’t like all the time I would never go out of my way to criticize it cause who fucking cares what some other person draws. It has no affect on my life, by the time I get off social media I've already forgot what the art looked like.
Not to mention none of yall have the talent or skill to draw at that level. Skill-less ass losers. If you don’t like seeing Sero as Hispanic, draw your own fan art and post it, build your own feed, and just don’t interact with art you don't like, it’s not that hard.
And it’s funny as hell cause yall will draw an underage ten year old anime girl hella sexualized with huge titties or some uke shotacon boy and be like it’s just a drawing they're not real blah blah blah but let it be a redraw with a person of color and yall start foaming at the mouths like the miserable rabid dogs you are.
Then yall double down in the dumbest of ways, drawing a darker skin character as light in some sort of gotcha. Like way to miss the point of the character.
It’s always the same arguments that get brought up what if I made Black Panther white. When the whole point of Black Panther is the fact that he’s a Black African. Notice how no one ever calls for Black Bruce Wayne, why cause Bruce is a rich blue blood in America, the likelyhood of said person being black is minuscule. Superman on the other hand could be black bro's an alien. Aquaman was race swapped in the movies and no one gave a shit I wonder why (here's a hint, he passes the paperbag test)
The real reason black characters can’t be race swapped is cause their race is embedded into their character, why, one cause back then when they were being introduced there were no black characters so half of their character was revolved around them being wait for it, black. Because of said reason above, society and the media seems to believe that you can’t have a black character without their being some sort of reasoning behind it. (I.e why is their black people in this show, why is so and so black, despite it not changing anything about the story)
Don’t even get me started on the fact that none of yall would ever dare say this to any person of color in real life cause you’re a bunch of pathetic losers who would get beat to a pulp.
Just sick and tired of the racism so prevalent in fan communities. Cause it's all communities not just anime.
Yall still salty over people drawing Harry Potter as Indian and Hermione as black, or Pansy Parkinson as Asian. Lucas and Erica from stranger things are heavily criticized for every thing their character does and yall hype up every other character cause they’re white. Obsessed with Eddie for doing what exactly? The same shit Lucas does helping his friends fight the upside down. Caleb still has the least amount of followers out of all the men wonder why (hint he doesn't pass the paper bag test)
I don’t intend for this to get much traction hence why I posted it hella late at night but yeah I’m tired and needed to vent.
