if there is one thing i hate in the anime fandom is people think asian is only japanese, korean, and chinese, there is more to asians then where they’re from, people seem to forget that pale and dark skin asians exist because people only believe all asians are light skin which isn’t true because biasian people exist, how are you gonna be an anime fan and be racist to pale and dark skin asians and call them fake asians at the same time?
Or worse thinking that all dark skin Asians just automatically means they are more African than Asian. They probably won't deny that there is dark skinned Asians, but they will assume they have certain traits that is just the same as stereotyping. Things such as afros, braids, frizzled hair, etc. They'll seethe if they know a dark skinned or tan Asian girl who has smooth straight hair. Why else nobody gives a shit about Michiko Malandro from Michiko & Hatchin? A main character that is a badass bitch. They would rather blackwash Jolyne Kujo from JJBA Stone Ocean and give her puffy afro hairstyle buns than have an original character be presented to them.

I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

Could you educate yourself ? Idk why you suddenly decided spit your ignorant opinion but I don't care if you are annoyed.

Motherfuckers who constantly complain about blackwashing or any other minority being cast in a remake and tell minorities to make their own stories need to shut the fuck up unkindly
Because I can guarantee not one of those dickheads ever watched
Canon Busters: The one time it did get social media attention on twitter the tag got taken over by some idiots who were crying to bring back some shit called The OA
Seis Manos: Netflix didn’t promote it at all so it’s mostly their fault but still
The Jellies, Lazer Wulf or Camp Buckooth: every time these shows were promoted here came annoying ass venture bros and Metalocalypse fans under every video commenting that these shows were trash and to bring back VB and Metalocalyps
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: which is doing semi fine but it’s still annoying when I see a promotion online and the comments are filled with “Bring back the owl house !” because you know they lost their show so they can’t let anyone else enjoy their shows
I’m A Virgo: everyone complained that it was ‘too weird’ but claim that they want different stories about black people that aren’t slave stories but turn their heads at black surrealism
Nope: People claimed it was too confusing and that they didn’t understand the story when the story and the message is absolutely easy to understand
It’s always “make your own stories !” yet they never help support those stories, they always try to hijack what little promotion or they just straight up ignore it or even when we do make our own stories they still complain and claim it’s “woke pandering” or “woke propaganda”

What if Jake is actually Brazilian but pretends to be British because he thinks it's classy and cool because of his movies
Also speaking light skins i heard there was drama around a puss and boots fanart where he was drawn white. As a spic myself i can conform that Spaniards are definitely white even if they do tan. Many get pretty offended if you think the Spanish aren't white. I blame ignorant Americans who think anyone who is from a foreign country and speaks a different language are immediately brown and they'll fight with you on it. Just because someone looks brown doesn't mean they aren't Caucasian (and vice-versa blah blah blah) I'm light during winter but my skin gets darker during summer we can literally rotate between colors. Im not into representation really but if wanted something to reflect my race i would want that small detail of having the characters skin change during seasons. Closest that I've seen of that is Dib Membrane in the IZ movie because he's a self insert of the character and Dibs skin changed a bit to reflect how the creators did
I can definitely see that from Jake. Yeah, I've seen that drama on Twitter. I feel bad for the artists getting harassed by Twitards for drawing characters with a lighter tone than their headcanon dark skin. Even when you draw a Spaniard with dark skin, they want it darker. As dark as dark chocolate because any lighter means it is whitewashed to them. It's fucking retarded. It wasn't a problem to make a character light skin if they are from Europe from places like Italy or Spain. But now, you got to make them dark as fuck to be "accurate". They claim it is about diversity, but they believe only ONE skin type of people live in there and nobody else, when most countries like that are diverse in itself and have different skin tones and ethnicities. Many people live there, but it's ironic they don't see it themselves and began making their own stereotypes in the name of progressiveness.

I will forever love when people draw non-conventionally attractive versions of the brothers, or even just headcanons. Give them different body types! Give them unique facial features! Give them marks and scars and blemishes! They look so much better that way (in my opinion).

“Blackwashing” goes in the same box as “the female gaze” and “transandrophobia” for terms that are coined as a parallel equivalent to an existing term but miss that the core aspect of their counterpart (whitewashing, the male gaze, and transmisogyny) is a power imbalance. Hegemony. Oppression. The original terms are critiques of these (racism, more specifically colorism and antiblackness; misogyny; transphobia x misogyny). They are not equivalent and can only work in one direction.
