It’s always the same arguments that get brought up what if I made Black Panther white. When the whole point of Black Panther is the fact that he’s a Black African. Notice how no one ever calls for Black Bruce Wayne, why cause Bruce is a rich blue blood in America, the likelyhood of said person being black is minuscule. Superman on the other hand could be black bro's an alien. Aquaman was race swapped in the movies and no one gave a shit I wonder why (here's a hint, he passes the paperbag test)

The real reason black characters can’t be race swapped is cause their race is embedded into their character, why, one cause back then when they were being introduced there were no black characters so half of their character was revolved around them being wait for it, black. Because of said reason above, society and the media seems to believe that you can’t have a black character without their being some sort of reasoning behind it. (I.e why is their black people in this show, why is so and so black, despite it not changing anything about the story)

I guess my fandom red flag/annoyance is that I don't trust when people act like misogyny and homophobia/transphobia are not interconnected in fictional settings. For example, homosexuality is accepted but women are oppressed and vice versa. E.g. In Norse Marvel fic, Sif being accepted without question while Loki is oppressed for his gender identity and/or sexuality (fandom tends to do this). Or if they go off about Sif's struggles becoming a warrior but it was all peachy for Loki in terms of gender identity and sexuality (comics tend to do this). I think those two things should go hand in hand IF YOU PLAN TO INCLUDE EITHER OF THEM in world-building and it is myopic to ignore that.

From experience, the people doing this will either be dismissive of misogyny or dismissive of transphobia/homophobia based in which of this issues are taken seriously. Or at least people too eager to either call women bitches or make weird homophobic/transphobic jokes.

when it comes to content about women of color, fandom is already a nightmare but anti-ships are hellscapes.

the most toxic forms of anti-shipping language label women of color as “easy” or “convenient.” (literally the same terms used in fast-food marketing). this type of language objectifies Black and brown women as disposable and consumable plot devices in the service of a white MC or shipper. within certain anti-ship spaces, discourse centers on the WOC character’s sexiness while negating her inherent humanity (see bell hooks, eating the other).

in this racist-sexist framing, white shippers read women characters of color as desirable but, if not actively antagonistic to them, then unworthy of true partnership/humanity/autonomy. this shows up as:

she’s sexy, but not real enough (like me/my OC) to deserve him.

she’s the convenient choice, not “someone to come home to.”

she can’t/won’t repair the broken parts of him like i/my OC can

the act of defining who is considered “real” or “deserving” is about power— not partnership. no matter how much emotional or pseudo-intellectual language it’s couched in, this is about wielding the power to dehumanize and align with white patriarchy.
