ok so HI. hi. my old tutorial pisses me off so i will make a new one

i made a guy whose sole purpose is to be shaded so dont worry he likes it. and his name. his name will be mr. Boob. mr boob does not have to be blue

theres probably way better explanations of how to do it but unfortunately trying to "emulate" shading does ask you to somewhat understand ur character in a 3d way. like what would the 2d shape be if you "sliced" it? mr boob is made of so many circles. his tail also does a kind of weird perspective foreshortening thing because its pointing at you. is this being conveyed

you obviuously dont have to draw a horrendous grid on your characters skin to do this . BUT it helps you put down (or at least envision) the lines of the form shading :

dont worry about cast shadows or the shading color because this is FORM SHADOW time only. think about what surfaces of the character are obviously facing away from the light source and put down the "separation line" of the shading based on that. thr most important thing is that youre trying to separate light from dark

im going to pick the first one for cast shadows bc it will be the most obvious to me

ok so. his ears and snout are blocking other surfaces of his body from the light, which means a shadow is cast!!!! bam. i saw someone describe cast shadows as what the light's pov "can't see." his entire body is putting down a cast shadow on the ground too

im impatient so i blended the form shadows now. its usually the easiest to just NOT blend cast shadows as a way of conveying that they are still cast shadows. but you can still blend them if you want to show "distance" between the obstruction and the surface its blocking. but its just a way of saying form and cast shadows should not be treated the same even if their softness coincides

im going to lump reflection and ambient light together because theyre like. similar. reflections dont just happen in mirrors

since the sky is blue, making the ambient lighting, i tinged mr. boobs existing shadow to be a bit blue. (*this is kind of important because it can help you decide a shading color, which should USUALLY be based on the environment) (unless your character is just in the transparent void then it doesnt matter)

since the ground is pink, i made pink light bounce off of him. pointed and labelled. i dont rlly know how to go more in depth than that

contact shadows are literally shadows formed from direct-touching contact. very little light can reach in there, even from how reflections disperse, which means youre free to use the darkest color available (black). in this case mr. boob is making contact with the floor. because he is sitting on the floor.

i touched him up a bit and wow!!!!!!!!!! look at mr. boob!!! he is so beautifully sculpted.

and one more thing

thats right. i made mr boob PINK. hes fucking ruined now. just kidding i would never say that to him

what im trying to convey here (its the easiest with really light colors) is a transitional color. this can also show subsurface scattering depending on how you use it which is fun to look at. the mistake i made on my last tutorial was "Just pick a warm saturated color!" which is really wrong in examples like Blue mr boob. because it would be weird to use a warm color to transition from blue to blue.

if you have a character that isn't bright enough then obviously the shadows wont be as visible. its BEST to bring more attention to highlights and reflections to reveal the form a bit. they play the biggest role with darker colors

[This happened a few years ago, but I’ll write the ages as they were at the time.]

I (14M) made a server for a fandom I was in. It was a small fandom (I was mutuals with every single fan on tumblr) so I thought it’d be nice to have a place we can all talk other than the tumblr dashboard. This was also not my first server — I had 2 or 3 years of experience running them (having run a server with 100ish members a year or two beforehand) so I was fully confident in my ability to run a server with less than 20 people, especially since everyone knew each other and was friends already.

Now, there was this person in the server, we’ll call her B (16F). I wasn’t super close with her, but ofc I was friends with her through the fandom. We didn’t talk much — the only time I can recall us speaking outside of discord was to send fandom art requests to each other. Obviously I didn’t have a problem with her coming in, but as she spoke more in my server, I started to question whether she was somebody I wanted hanging around.

I won’t go into full depth of things she said or did (both for privacy’s sake and to keep things brief), but I’ll explain my biggest reasons for kicking her.

First, she vented a lot, which typically I wouldn’t judge, but I really didn’t want a fandom server associated with so much negativity — and not only that, but the way she vented was very… I mean, we would be telling her things she did wrong in general channels, and then she would go to the vent channel and say things like “I’m sorry I’m so stupid and such a bad person I didn’t know what I was doing wrong.” and then we’d (well, everybody else — I don’t play these games with people) all have to console her. Not only that, but she’d vent about shit like — “I’m such a bad person because I’m cis. I’m sorry for being cis.” In a server full of trans people.

Second was her ableism towards autistic people, in a server also full of autistic people (This is honestly the biggest thing I had against her). Since most of us were autistic, we headcanoned most (if not all) of the characters in the series as autistic, usually with little basis in canon. One person specifically said “I think X character is autistic” and most people agreed, until she came along and said “No, they’re too normal.” We were all kind of like “???” until somebody said “Autistic people are normal” and she said “No, they’re all learning disabled” and some other stuff I don’t remember off the top of my head. (Obviously nothing wrong with having learning disabilities and many autistic people do have them etc, it’s just the way she went about saying what she said — and also disagreeing with a harmless headcanon because a character was too “normal” to be autistic). Again, most of us are autistic and were offended by what she said.

These were the two biggest contributors as to why I kicked her from my server — there were more (usually smaller) things she did that made people uncomfortable or pissed me off, but again, I’m not going to mention everything.

So, I silently kicked her, not wanting to cause too much drama, but also fed up with her behavior. I think I also softblocked her on tumblr, not wanting us to be mutuals or friends anymore but also not seeing a block as necessary (I didn’t mind if she saw my fandom posts in the tag, for example). However, she ended up following me back and sent me an ask asking why she was kicked from the server. I believe I told her “I don’t owe you an explanation, I just didn’t want you there anymore”. I didn’t want to say “you did this, this, and this” and just have her say “I didn’t do that/That wasn’t a big deal” and turn it into an entire argument, you know? I also just didn’t want to talk to her at all. So after answering, I softblocked her again and she sent me a long rant calling me a bitch, to which I simply hardblocked her.

I’m pretty sure I was justified in kicking her from my server, but I’m not sure if I’m justified in not telling her why — I understand being confused and demanding an answer but I also know she’d been told off multiple times — and I still don’t think she’s owed a response. Maybe if we were closer friends, I would have explained why. But I don’t know. Am I the asshole?

im currently reading a people’s history of the french revolution by eric hazan after reading one of marie antoinette’s biographies just bc it pissed me off how much the author demonized lafayette. the french revolution is my primary example of how his intentions seem totally pure but he didn’t know how to actually execute his ideas properly, and he just assumed everyone else was a good person until he was forced to recognize that’s not always the case. i think he was a “moderate” (meaning that he was in between the left and right) because he saw good in both sides.

also you cannot tell me the reason he was so obsessed with america wasn’t because he lost the comfort of his family at a young age and then found it again when he arrived in america. motherfucker had so many emotional issues

I think when his brothers died, Future Leo would have tried to spend as much time as possible with them leading up to it, being downright clingy even. Maybe with Raph, he tried to actively prevent it and thag how he lost his arm along with a bunch of other bad stuff happening like maybe it was originally only because Raph was supposed to be the only casualty to an otherwise successful mission but due to Leo's interference the whole squad he was protecting died and the mission completely failed) and with Donnke he didn't stop him directly bit he kept insisting he mot go put, saying that he's seen that this is how he dies and he doesn't want to lose his other half like this. Donnie asks him how he dies and when Leo says he was saving CJ, he decides that's a good enough reason to die, telling Leo of his final vision where CJ ks sent back in the past. Leo insisted on walking CJ and Donnie to their drop off and gave Donnie the biggest hug he could when it was time to say goodbye

Draxum he just outright told he was going to die and they had a huge heart to heart where he thanked the old goat for everything

With Mikey and April, he kept them both close. Eventually, he probably bad to tell Mikey of his and Donnjes powers, so when he asked him to sacrifice himself, he wouldn't question them and he does. He waits till the night before the end and explains everything to Mikey. His little brother is an equal part heartbroken, pissed, and understanding for why he kept such a thing hidden so long and realizes Leo wouldn't be telling him this now if it wasn't important. And that's when Leo drops the bombshell that the Reaistance was fated to fail form the very beginning, bit thay Donnie had seen a golden light bringing CJ to the past to stop the invasion foem ever happening right before he died...

That Leo had seen Mikey sacrifice himself to make it when the time came and that he didn't know how or when, only that it'll happen within the next 24 hours.

April he didn't have the chance to spend time with. He had to plan with Mikey. He made sure to hug her before they got separated.

This is so fantastically sad, and i could definitely see all of this happening.

It also touches a bit on how i'm thinking the visions work in correlation to the future. (ie, whether it's changeable, constantly in flux, or set in stone.) My favorite time shinanigans thing to use is the 'fixed points in time', which basically means there are very specific things that the universe has decided have to happen and will happen one way or another. (Perfect example is the doctor who -"Waters of Mars" episode. I mean they use this concept throughout David Tenants run as the Doctor but this episode stresses it. It's also my favorite episode.) Which is exactly what you're showing with Leo trying to save Raph but is unable to change what was important.

So basically, if Leo sees something happen, like someone die, that person will die. If he (or Donnie) try to interfere, it may change the situation slightly but, in the end, they still will die when and how it was seen. (Donnie's own death is changed the most. he saw Leo's original vision of his death via the Dream Catcher and decided he didn't want to make his death even worse for his twin, and put a plan in motion. He still died that same day, in those same circumstances, but his actual death is in different way than that original vision. I say original vision, b/c once Donnie decided to change what he could, Leo's vision of that changed to match what would happen.)

I saw a really popular TikTok that showed Disney movies over the last decade, including the live action The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan & Wendy movies, that compared to the animated movies of the past to show that the company is going down hill. I rolled my eyes since it's another example of right leaning dubasses whining about characters being racebent in the Disney live action remakes. (Don't get me wrong. I don't think everyone who brings this up is doing so in bad faith. There is a meaningful conversation to be had about how Disney props up black talent just to get diversity points, and then the IRL actors end up receiving the blunt of the backlash from right leaning dipshits. Black people have the right to be pissed off at that. However, as someone who isn't black, it's not my place to comment.) But what I will talk about is that I think history is just repeating itself.

If you are a hardcore Disney fan, you know that the Disney movies can be classified into eras like Golden, Silver, Renaissance, etc. The time between Walt died in the late 60s to when The Little Mermaid came out is called the Dark Ages. Movies like The Black Cauldron, The Rescuers, Robin Hood and more are examples of movies that came out during this time period. There's a reason why a lot of people in the general public have probably never heard of these, the quality of them ranged to mediocre to outright terrible. Things got so bad during this time period that The Care Bears Movie topped The Black Cauldron in the box office. (The modern equivalent would be if someone made a Peppa Pig movie that topped a Disney movie in the box office.) So, yeah. Pretty big low.

During this time, Don Bluth, who worked for Disney before quitting and forming his own studio, was the studios biggest rival. They produced classics like Secret of Nimh, The Land Before Time, Anastasia and American Tale. This was also the age of children's fantasy movies like Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and The Last Unicorn. There were plenty of great movies being produced by other companies.

Near the end of the 80s, Michael Eisner became the Disney CEO. While I don't agree with all of his ideas, he pushed the company in a different direction starting with Oliver and Company, which lead to the beginning of the Renaissance period in the 90s.

This is eerily close to what's happening now. The quality of most Disney movies (because Encanto, Moana and Coco are good in my opinion) that have came out in the past ten years are mediocre, but other animation studios are picking up the slack and producing the better content. Puss in Boots 2, The Bad Guys, Wendell & Wild, Into the Spiderverse, and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio are all awesome western animated movies that came out within the last few years. None of them are made by Disney. Like in the past, I think that once Disney gets new and better leadership, we'll get the good quality Disney movies again within the next decade.

I don't remember my response just that I had the biggest grin on my face which was hilariously interpreted into being intimidation? shit-eating? a challenge? something hostile but I was actually fucking nervous like oops, didn't think that shit through

sooo anyway we start at each other, I don't remember the details but we had to be pulled apart and sent to the principal's office

this kid didn't have the same experience as me in school. he was a popular, jocky, upper middle class sorta kid even in elementary school.

meanwhile, the principal had some fucked up sort of vendetta against me? she fucking HATED me. she would go out of her way to catch me slipping, even with shit that was NONE of her business (for example, a cousin and I got into a fight OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL and she randomly barged into our classroom one day?? and then saw the scar I gave him on his face AND SHE SUSPENDED ME FOR IT)

so, unfortunately for him, he got caught into the gravity of her hatred for me and got nearly the same dramatic punishment (something like 1 week vs 2 week suspended idk, don't remember)

and as we are walking back he turns to me and says something to the effect of "dude this punishment is way overboard"

and for some reason this has stuck with me for all my life. that moment he turned to me and questioned everything about what I was going through without even knowing it. yeah, the punishment WAS overboard. we didn't even bruise each other, we didn't hurt each other really, at most our egos were cracked from the fight.

it was nice to be treated human, maybe? like, to have confirmation that this was bullshit?

daddy issues and my hetero relationships

falling in love with a man (whether it is reciprocated or not) has been one of the biggest pondering events for me. i have, in a sense, let go of everything i am without him here. i moved and lost everything, and i knew him before this, but then he hadn’t made his imprint yet. for a while out here i was still living in cali spiritually, and this applied to my love life as well. i had realized before i left that my high school crush also had a high school crush and that crush was me, and in my head i had every intention of moving back to state when i could. so i talked to him and carried this relationship around with me as if i was still there. this was just a pause, we’d resume by summer.

but i met ******* on a manic night with my friends and i laughed about it when it happened. i didn’t think much of him or it or any of this, and i didn’t even consider him a part of me for a while. i see everyone i love as pieces of me, platonic or not, and that’s the problem with this. he asked me on a date first, and it was shocking as i had never met a boy who approached me first like that. i mean, of course there were guys who asked to link, and of course there were guys interested, but they’d always have a second motive. we’d always fuck, or argue about fucking, or some other sexual things and it angered me. it pissed me off for what it’s worth because i am a person with a heart and a stomach and ten toes and fingers. not just a hole.

for a long time i genuinely believed i was just a hole.

so when he’d took me on this date, i found myself geeked throughout the day when he never asked to fuck or made me feel like i owed him something, even though he paid for it all and drove me everywhere, at the end of the day all he asked for was a bit more time and some rest. i get butterflies just thinking about it.

he noticed so much about me and he was gentle and soft, and it made me shy and nervous, and there was this strong pull from myself to become a mother. and i would grab him some napkins to eat with or i would hold his food while he was driving (he wouldn’t want to ask for help so he’d drive with one hand, holding it in the other). and i spoke gentle and got comfortable and soon became someone i had hoped to be my entire life.

soon thereafter i felt like i missed him everyday and i only wanted him, not another person in another state i had left, or another person in another state i had migrated to. i just wanted him wherever that would take us.

but i come here to say, that i saw a tik tok of some girl who said she wanted a boyfriend to cure her daddy issues, and although he’s not my boyfriend (officially yet!!) i can say that, in fact, being in love like this hasn’t cured much, but instead it has expanded them ten fold and made them feel a bit unbearable. i could have had a good dad.

the problem does not come in when i think of how he wasn’t one, he is a man and i had held this idea in my mind of what a man was. i’d believed most men were sexual and aggressive and a dog in heat, as sad and unfair as it seems. but i had no sense of who people were. i didn’t have a mom and i didn’t grow up with a good example of a dad and i wanted to see the best in men but i didn’t know how. so when ******* came around i recognized who he was as a person rather than a man, and i realized oh! a man can be a human!

i found myself mourning a what if, a could be. why did i grow up with such putrid treatment? i could have had a good dad. he could’ve been just like this boy i had met, and i wouldn’t have to fall in love and become vulnerable and i’d began to get angry and scared, and i contemplated myself. i didn’t want to keep talking to him, i wanted to block my blessings, because of this obsession of what could’ve been.

it’s hard. i feel naked sometimes, and i feel my eyes tear up sometimes (for no reason in my conscious mind, however i’m sure my subconscious knows). and i hate it a lot of the time. feeling this way. because who am i? i am a person outside of my struggles, i am a person without my god. my god almost killed me and i lived, and now i’m here.

******* was placed in my life (now) at the loneliest pinnacle of my life. i’m so grateful i could cry.

it’s scary because i can’t lose him. he’s been here so long, and during a time when i lived without him he was here too. so i worry a lot about the universe taking him away from me.

but i’m learning to breathe through fear and take risks. and i’m scared so much all the time, and that’s ok. but i should try and do my best and let him in because i shouldn’t let my past determine who i become and what i do and who i love (if those outcomes aren’t what i want). and at the end of the day, the least i could say, is that i love with everything in me. and i do what i can to be a good piece of him. even if i’m not perfect or pretty or blessed with riches, i can say that i love completely.

Makoto's whole plan was already in shambles and that's one of my biggest issues with it. he saw a situation that a rookie detective with a little cooking skills could fix and decided the solution was the most difficult possible option to both execute and keep secerete. unfortionatly due to how everything in the game is in the same state of "this makes literally no fucking sense even in universe"- i don't think this was done on purpose by the writers. i think this game's logic writing is just poor

i didn't like the zombie thing due to how it was being used as a cheap scare and an infodumping exposition device, that pissed me off, especially cause all the info it was used for could have been learned earlier in the game if Yuma wasn't running around solving completly unrelated murder cases. however, i did like the idea of the characters losing complete control over their bodies upon death, and suffering as they walk the thin line between the living and the dead for eternity. people often say hell is the worst place to go after you die, but this is an excelet example of how purgatory is far far worse

Yakou's macguffin will only remove the one good thing the zombie concept has and leave absolutly no ground for Makoto's plan to stand on

don't get me wrong, i love Yakou Lives aus, and Yakou Revivial aus- but i just don't think it should happen in canon. it's fine to explore in fics but can do active damage to what little integrity the canon story has.

it nullifies the hit of Yakou's death, and that's a big deal when Yakou was the only character in the proper main cast to die. it's got the same issue as the dr3 anime reviving the full sdr2 cast (sans Chiaki) but worse cause while in ronpa you expect the cast to die due to the killing game inviroment, Raincode makes an effort to lull you into a false sense of saftey after ch0 trying to get you to think the main cast has plot armour, only to suddenly kill Yakou- argueably one of the most loveable and importaint characters in the cast. it hits alot harder, and to undo that death is to ruin it's impact

this whole regentivie pill thing also causes an issue where it could effectively retcon one of the most interesting setbacks of the faulty homunuculi. i didn't like how the zombie shit was handled in canon- i hated it actually- but it does create an intetesting hurdle for homunculi to jump over whenever they leave Kanai Ward. i was kinda hoping if we got a sequel that stuggle would be explored more, as well as the existential crisis of becoming eternally between life and death and without control of yourself after passing, but if this pill is going where i think it is- that's just going to get macguffin'd out of the conflict

Technoblade’s purpose in the political narrative of the Dream SMP

I can’t sleep so I decided to finally write the post I’ve been struggling with for literal months, except way more casual because I can’t be bothered anymore and also I’m sleep deprived.

So the thing is: to me the DSMP storyline has always been primarily political, probably because I was introduced to it through Wilbur who was definitely going for political, and also because I’m just generally interested in political narratives right now. Obviously I appreciate the character work and the personal relationship stuff, that’s what makes it more interesting than just dry allegory, but when it comes down to it, this story is about politics to me. So that’s the angle I’m going to approach it from.

Also not to spoil the conclusions here, but I’m an anarchist, that’s my lens.

(Obviously all of this is about rp from here on out unless otherwise specified)

Basically the situation as Techno joins the server is this: L'Manburg exists as an autonomous nation and is de facto independent although not officially recognised by the Dream SMP. The self-appointed president Wilbur Soot decides to hold an election and rig it in order to consolidate his power over the nation he founded and he gets his VP Tommyinnit to join in on the plan. Their scheme fails and they end up voted out instead. The new president, Schlatt, immediately establishes himself as an authoritarian figure and exiles Wilbur and Tommy.

A couple of points on what the election arc demonstrates:

1: the appearance of democracy can be used for distinctly undemocratic purposes.

2: even if the elections aren’t rigged, the electoral system could be massively flawed and end up favouring a party that in fact didn’t have the popular vote

3: even if the winning government (the coalition in this case) has the majority vote, that doesn’t guarantee that they’ll actually act according to the popular will.

4: the supporters of the losing parties basically just have to let the majority overrule their wishes, espcially since apparently L’Manburg doesn’t have an established role for an opposition, yikes. That’s actually a MAJOR oversight in the system but I’m not gonna go into that too much.

5: frankly as an anarchist I am just deeply cynical towards representative democracy, and just because you have a token appearance of choice and consent doesn’t mean that it isn’t a hierarchical and authoritarian system. And to be fair, from my point of view this applies even to so-called liberal democracies and progressive parties. Full disclosure: even if L'Manburg was the ideal example of a representative democracy (which it very much isn’t) I would still be opposed to it because I fundamentally do not believe in top down systems, even electoral ones.

6: despite all these flaws, all the characters seem to implicitly accept the electoral system as legitimate. There’s criticism against the actions of individual characters acting within the system, such as Quackity calling out Wilbur for trying to rig the election, but nobody is questioning the system itself.

So at this point I’m sitting there, watching all this go down, and thinking “man, this would be so much more bearable if there was an anarchist point of view being represented in the story.”

And hey, look who IMMEDIATELY SHOWS UP.

Okay, I’m not gonna lie, early installation Technoblade is not the best representation of anarchism. I was mostly rooting for him out of sheer contrarianism initially. I didn’t really even care if it would be another Killmonger/Magneto/Zaheer situation because I’m used to reading against the authorial intent when it comes to these things. Sometimes any representation is better than no representation, even with political ideologies. That’s not to say that him just straight up spouting this hobbesian notion of a “dog-eat-dog world” didn’t grate on me, obviously it did.

That kind of worldview of humanity needing authority in order to prevent chaos and conflict is literally antithetical to anarchism and is the favourite talking point of authoritarians, the least anarchist people there are. It’s literally what people use to argue AGAINST anarchism. I think it’s mostly because cc!Techno obviously wasn’t particularly educated on anarchist thought and was just basically having fun roleplaying with his friends at this point. Which is frustrating but fair enough I guess.

Cynical ideas about human nature are pretty deeply rooted in the mainstream, unfortunately, most people just consider it common sense. And like I said, it’s a huge talking point in the propaganda against anarchism.

(… even though in fact these arguments were originally used against proponents of representative democracy. Hobbes himself was very much a monarchist, the idea of letting normal people vote for their representatives would have been terrifying to him. Like surely the world would descent into a free-for-all war, all against all. Imagine letting commoners have OPINIONS, the horror.)

So yeah, that stuff was pretty ehhhhh. It was basically what I’d expected though: cc!Techno isn’t an anarchist and we just don’t get accurate representation from non-anarchists, ever. What I dared to hope was that Techno’s character would at least stay consistent about his opposition to ALL governments. I was pretty sure that he would, even though it seemed like the majority of the fandom at the time was convinced that he would switch over to Schlatt’s side or something. It would have been a really shitty twist, I would have ragequit immediately. I mean what would have been the entire point of his character then? He might as well have been a random mercenary. Why even have his character be an anarchist if you were just going to make him work for a government?

(ftr this is kinda my biggest problem with the Hypixel Skyblock revolution event lol, honestly I think that was a worse depiction of anarchism than early DSMP Technoblade. I mean the speech was good, but… still became a government official, tho. booooooooo, cringe)

And yes, I was rooting against L'Manburg, obviously, and I would have even if it had meant having to deal with another badly written anarchist villain character. I never understood why people saw L'Manburg as the good guys, they were nationalist and exclusionary and their whole existence was based on trying to scam people for money.

I mean they were definitely funny, they were great entertainers. I have no problems with people rooting for them because they’re fun to watch; I did that for a bit too. But people were starting to get really into the story and talk about Wilbur and Tommy, the corrupt politicians, and the country that literally excluded people based on nationality as the heroes, unironically, which was wild to me. And when Wilbur started his “villain arc” well: people called it a villain arc, as if he hadn’t been pretty much a bad guy from the beginning, constantly just out for money and power and taking advantage of the people around him and then pretending to be the victim when challenged. I mean yes he got worse, but I wouldn’t call it a villain arc, more like just a mental breakdown arc.

More importantly, to me L'Manburg represented so many things I hate about the status quo in real life, and seeing the fandom mostly unquestioningly accept it as good just pissed me off. Still pisses me off tbh. I mean, to be diplomatic I could say that I understand the emotional attachment and the way L'Manburg was built up mirrors a lot of how real nations are built and how they create a sense of patriotism out of symbols and a sense of honour and loyalty, and it’s actually really fascinating how it even works in a Minecraft roleplay. Says something about the human mind I guess. Doesn’t mean I have to like it though.

Anyway, I just wanted to see literally any kind of opposition to power, even if it had to come from a character that was unquestionably a villain, which I fully assumed Techno would be. Because political narratives so often just leave us out, or at best barely mention us. And even from a narrative point of view, adding an anarchist perspective to a political story just objectively broadens its scope and actually challenges people who are used to only arguing along the lines of conservative or liberal, welfare state or privatization, nationalism or multiculturalism, etc. Even if the original work dealt with it poorly, at least it would give me the excuse to rant about it on Tumblr, which is kinda why I revived my old Minecraft sideblog for this. (That and pig!Techno fanart.)

Also how can you have a story so fundamentally about power without its counterpoint: the rejection of power?

(Yes, Dream SMP as a whole is definitely a narrative about power, it’s a huge theme for Wilbur, Quackity, Dream, Eret and the Badlanders at least, as well as obviously the anarchist characters from the opposite direction.)

So yeah, the build up to November 16th for me was mainly about the anticipation for what Techno would do, how would Techno’s character respond to the seemingly inevitable formation of a new government. THAT was the point of interest for me, that was what I was the most invested in. Would we get an actual anarchist opposition as a new side to the conflict or would they just awkwardly drop that whole angle? Or even have him team up with Schlatt like a complete sellout? There was so much potential but I worried they might just waste it.

And I was right to worry since apparently in the original script Techno wasn’t supposed to do anything, he was just there to help fight Schlatt and witness the explosion along with everyone else.

And WOW that would have been so incredibly boring

Not even just from the political perspective, just talking about the narrative in general terms here: imagine November 16th without Techno’s plot points. Not only would it have been boring for Techno’s character but it would have been equally boring for basically everybody but Wilbur and Philza. An anticlimactic fight followed by a big explosion that pretty much everybody had seen coming already. Yes, the button room scene is dramatic and heartbreaking… for Wilbur and Phil. But nobody else was there to see it. For everybody else, it was just a big explosion. It would have been such a huge disservice to anyone watching the other POVs.

Techno’s intervention gave everyone an ACTUAL climactic fight, it allowed characters other than Wil and Phil to witness some actual drama happening and to participate in it, rather than just waiting around for the explosion, while also foreshadowing the explosion. Even better, it provoked SO MUCH discussion in the fandom AND gave a perfect hook for future conflicts to arise. Wilbur’s end was tragic but it was, at the time, final. L'Manburg would have still suffered a catastrophe but it would have been left with just the same exact antagonist as before: Dream.

And at this point Dream’s core goals had barely changed, just his approach was now different. Yes, that makes a difference for the plot, but it doesn’t really change much in terms of ideological conflict. Especially since there really isn’t that big of an ideological difference between Dream and Tommy, because arguably neither of them are particularly big on ideology in the first place, they just have conflicting goals and use different tactics to achieve those goals (well, the tactics aren’t always even that different *cough Spirit cough*).

Techno’s conflict with Tubbo and especially Quackity (and honestly most of the other characters in general) brings in so much more depth to the story, just by introducing another angle, not to even mention how much it brings to focus questions about power and violence. These are themes that exist in other characters’s storylines too but nowhere in the same way or as central as with Techno.

I’m getting kind of ahead of myself here, though.

The real twist of November 16th was the fact that Techno WASN’T a straight up villain, actually. It was a twist to me anyway, because with all my cynicism I just didn’t see it coming, I didn’t expect him to actually start making reasonable criticisms. I didn’t expect him to drop the hobbesian arguments entirely and start making points that actually sounded like anarchism.

I have to assume that cc!Techno must have seen some of the criticisms of his character and been inspired to adjust because the difference is pretty notable.

(Sidenote: I’m just forever kinda sad that Techno’s “I may seem like the villain here” monologue was cut from the video and most people never heard it.)

And I felt SO validated by the way, because it works so well in the story! Everyone is mostly content with the restoration of a status quo of some sort, Schlatt is gone, this is supposed to be the good ending, and then Techno calls them all out and turns the narrative around completely: This was just a coup d'état. This was just the previous political leadership retaking power by force. Why is everyone celebrating the same exact system that lead to Schlatt’s authoritarian rule in the first place?

What he does there is force the audience to question the narrative they’ve been presented so far, that they’ve accepted without a thought. It might not convince them, but they can’t just ignore it either.

Whatever you wanna say about the discourse around Techno on that day, in the ideological narrative THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART. Not who betrayed who or when is political violence justified, that’s about personal relationships and morality and it’s mostly all more relevant to the aftermath than the event itself. In my opinion, the REAL point in the moment is that the characters and the audience were comfortable with the ending only to be presented with a completely new perspective on the events.

It also recontextualises the finale, including Wilbur’s actions! It’s a much more ambiguous end to the Pogtopia vs Manburg arc and to Wilbur’s original run as the head writer. Wilbur’s “even with Tubbo in charge I don’t think [that ‘special place’] can exist again” is vague enough to be dismissed as just part of his paranoia and internal conflict, but with Techno, there’s a concrete question: what if Tubbo, given the same powers as Schlatt, will turn out to be just a new Schlatt? And suddenly you have to wonder what Wilbur meant by his words too. And was all this foreshadowing something about L’Manburg’s future?

Okay I’ve only made it to November 16th and there’s so much more DSMP to talk about but the post is getting too long and I’m starting to lose my energy. Will I ever make a part two? No idea. But I’ll try.
