Six Sentence Sunday

classicstober 2024's prompts have been announced and i'm super excited because it's historical figures! my obsession with Roman non-fiction and biographies has finally paid off!

i thought it would be a good opportunity to jumpstart my writing brain by writing lots of short and snappy things. and so today, i've written 1000 or so words for Regina of South Shields, who i've had the pleasure of visiting!

i'm about to ramble, so i'm putting it under a cut. also warning, i've included photos of a tombstone and a human skeleton. if you just want to read the six sentences and not see them, scroll fast right to the bottom.

so, this is Regina. or rather, her tombstone, discovered by builders in 1878, and a reconstruction of how it might have looked when it was erected. if you haven't heard of her, which is understandable, she was a British woman from modern day St Albans (near London) during the Roman occupation of Britain. she was sold as a slave (did her family need money? was she born a slave? we don't know) and bought by a man named Barates, from Palmyra, a city in modern day Syria, who was either a soldier or at least travelling with the Roman army. they moved to a garrison close to Hadrian's Wall in what is now South Shields in the north east, and Barates fell in love with Regina. he freed her and they got married.

her tombstone is mostly important because it tells us that a Syrian man was in Britain during this time, and since her tombstone has Palmyrene script on it, and the chances he engraved his own wife's tombstone are slim, there was likely at least one other Syrian person who could engrave headstones around. which suggests that there was a whole group! the name of the Roman fort in South Shields was Arbeia, which could even mean "the place of the arabs."

it's estimated that a third of people in Britain during the Roman occupation were long distance migrants, and most were not slaves, as is often assumed. Ivory Bangle Lady, who I have also visited in York Museum and who lived around the same time, is believed to have come from Africa. and she was a wealthy free woman!

but what about Regina? well, we know she was from the Catuvellauni tribe, and that she died aged 30. we can assume she spun wool as she's depicted doing so on the tombstone, which was a respectable pastime for Roman women, and she's shown wearing lots of jewellery, so she probably led a comfortable life.

but we don't know how she felt about her marriage, as her tombstone is in Barates' words. did she love him back, or was she under duress to marry him to improve her own prospects? did they have children? did she have friends in Arbeia? did she have to learn Aramaic or Latin to communicate with Barates, or did he know Celtic? we simply don't know. so much of her personality has been lost to time.

so my challenge was to write something that pieces together various possibilities to create what could be an approximation of who Regina was. to give her some life, a voice, and at least a bit of agency.

okay. enough preamble. here's six lines:

the names come from the Latin word perplexor, which you can probably guess what that word means.

In terms of flag design they're based off the homo/heteroflexible flags. With the center section using the color symbolism used on the bi flag, blue for attraction to dissimilar genders, pink/red for attraction to similar genders, although in this instance it's not inherently actually attraction. I also tried to make the overall colors of the flag look a little more "uncertain", if that makes any sense.

For your "what is radical feminism" anon - it might be helpful to consider what radfems mean by "radical". They're using it in the latin sense, "radix" meaning "root", i.e. "misogyny/patriarchy is the root of all oppression". In as much as they'll acknowledge other forms of oppression to exist, they're seen as byproducts of patriarchy. (Whilst I don't agree, there are systems of oppression where I can see how they came to that conclusion - things where one's (percieved) gender is directly relevant, ex homophobia, transphobia, etc - and ones where that's... baffling, to say the least - racism, classism, ableism, etc)

And whilst it's true that misogyny is a major issue, radfems often equate misogyny & the patriarchy existing to men existing, so the solution is to keep men and women separate, to varying degrees. This is why radical feminism often results in transphobia & intersexism - if men and women must be separated, you gotta draw the line between them somewhere. It's usually biology, sometimes it's identity, but either way we gotta have an Other, an Enemy, The Men.

It's also why it often results in biphobia - bi/pan/poly/m-spec women won't just cut themselves off from The Enemy. Same deal with sex workers (who are basically always women in the eyes of a radfem). Both groups are then victim blamed when they are mistreated by men. No self awareness that when they do that, m-spec women & sex workers are now being mistreated by women.

That plus lashing out at the men they can actually reach is why they're often also racist, and classist, and ableist, etc. All men are The Enemy, but these are the men they can actually Punish for it.

Radical feminism is a huge branch of feminism with a lot of differing ideas within it, same as any other branch, but this is their core. "Patriarchy is the sole/primary oppression in the world. Whether they like it or not, men will uphold it. Women must cut off all men to the best of their ability." All their bullshit springs from this well.

For Pride month, my modern day AU Professor James Moriarty and Sebastian Moran

Some of the details are unfortunately not going to show firstly since I had to make the pic smaller than the original anyway and secondly since I think uploading it here has wrecked the quality even further, however...

The plants/flowers are from Victorian flower language/floral code of which there are multiple versions but the ones I've used here are ferns (sincerity), ivy (fidelity), maidenhair fern (discretion) and white tuberose (dangerous pleasure)

The handkerchief on Moran's left arm is a nod to the gay men's 'hanky code'. Orange worn on the left side = [up for] anything. Also for Moriarty, a grey handkerchief worn on the left side can mean 'master' or 'bondage - top'

Moriarty's outfit is in the asexual flag colours - black suit, grey handkerchief and tie, white shirt, purple waistcoat. But additionally the aromantic flag features two shades of green with black, grey and white, so add in the colours of his buttonhole and you also get the aro flag colours. His buttonhole itself is a green carnation, famously a symbol associated with gay men in the Victorian era which was popularised by Oscar Wilde.

A collar with a locked padlock on it can be an indication that the person wearing it is a submissive who is 'owned' by or committed to a Dominant. Moriarty of course is the one holding the keys.

Moran's wrist cuff is partly a kinky thing though this is based on my WIP novel where Moran tends to wear things around his wrists for another reason too but I'm not going to spoil what that reason is.

The badges/pins/patches on Moran's jacket are mostly for industrial/alternative artists - Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy, Coil, Throbbing Gristle (also a slang term for an erection, which I'm sure would amuse Moran no end), Front 242, Einstürzende Neubauten, Killing Joke. The red badge on his left pocket says 'Discipline' which is a song by Throbbing Gristle but it definitely has a double meaning here. The badge at the top on his left side is for Coil but is also a chaos star or symbol of chaos. The three colour badge on his left pocket is of course the bi flag colours (as is his hair). The one next to that is the cover art for Coil's album Love's Secret Domain. If you look up the art in full size you might see why Moran would probably be amused by that cover in particular.

The larger badge on his right side says 'Be Gay Do Crimes' which I'm sure is a sentiment they can both get behind, even though technically Moran is bisexual. And his trans flag badge says 'Protect trans lives' on it. Neither of them are trans but I totally believe they would support and stand up for trans people.

Moran's shirt says 'Memento Mori' on it - Latin for 'remember you must die'. Skulls are a common image in Memento Mori artwork.

And the dog's name is Tyger; the spelling is based on the Blake poem. Tyger is a very good boy who supports queer people.
