We had fish growing up. For a while my mom had a massive tank in which she prized several fancy fish types, carefully monitoring water levels and cleaning it. Then we got one sick fish and the whole tank collapsed. I watched fish slowly die as their fins rotted off. Suffice it to say my parent’s animal husbandry haunts me in adulthood. Vets were for other people in their minds.

After that we only had blatantly neglected guppies and betta. Their uncirculated bowls weren’t heated or cleaned regularly and mom was baffled that our betta kept trying to kill itself by leaping free of the toxic water.

After a determined campaign of whining from me about living conditions she found a large looney tunes style fish bowl, big enough to actually house an animal. She filled it with water and left the dirty jar the fish was currently living in next to it on the kitchen table as a reminder to swap them. We left to run errands.

When we returned home we were flummoxed to find the fish was burnt to a crisp and there was a small hole burned into our tablecloth.

You see, the sunlight had shone into the room while we were gone. The light refracted through the full clean bowl of water, cooking the poor fish, before refracting again onto the table like a magnifying glass.

When she realized the house had almost burned down because of a fish my mom finally stopped trying and focused on farm animals that could at least scream if mistreated.

If fablehaven was mermaids this is what I think their mermaid tales would look like: Kendra: Its color changes depending on the temperature of the water, colder is more sapphire blue, lukewarm emerald green, warm gold, and hot is ruby red (I say this because kendra’s favorite colors changes, as we see with the wizenstone, so her tail kinda reflects that). When she becomes fairykind, her scales are laced with some kind of ultraviolet bioluminescent color that only some fish can see Seth: he’d be like a ghost pipefish. They can camouflage very well into their environment and are very hard to spot in the wild. I think he’d blend in with the seagrass very often when he and kendra are playing hide and seek. When he becomes a shadow charmer, he is able to survive in colder water temperatures (ghost pipefish usually live in about 22.1-29 degrees C but don’t quote me on that) Lena: I think she would be a dolphin because they are very playful in nature, and I think that’s what naiads intend to be (though they think drowning people is their idea of fun) plus she goes to the surface a lot as a dolphin Stan: flatfish because he can’t stop making pancakes for breakfast 😭 Ruth: i think she would have a crimson-colored tail, and this is a dumb reason but it’s because I feel like the color red fits her character well. Like it matches her personality (or what I remember of it) Dale: Green like the color of kelp, as he tends to the farm all day Warren: a great white Shark. Probably has some scars because he’s literally a knight of the dawn. Idk what else to say Tanu: some color of koi because they remind me of splashes which reminds me of potions Vanessa: Multicolored betta fish, but her tail color could change depending on who she’s possessing Bracken: Pearlescent, icy blue, or some combination of the two Ronodin: Inky black with flecks of gold and/or maroon Calvin: some species of minnow. I can’t decide what because I don’t get a specific color vibe from him Eve: Midnight blue. She is literally the [Eve]ning Lemme know if I should add any other characters or if you have a different idea for what their mermaid tails would look like!

I was bored at work so I made headcanons for what pets the characters in Bugsnax would have

Filbo- he doesn’t have any pets. He can’t even take care of a plant.

Elizabert/Eggabell- Eggabell has a tabby cat that will keep her company while Lizbert is out hunting. It’s essentially a Velcro cat. Lizbert has a German shepherd that she takes out all the time on adventures anywhere she can think of.

Beffica- has a chihuahua that she impulse bought because she thought it was cute, but she quickly fell in love with it. She dresses the dog up all the time and posts photos of it on her Instagrump.

Wambus/Triffany- they have an elderly basset hound that they love dearly, and a few livestock animals too, such as pigs, horses and cows when Wambus rebuilt his farm.

Cromdo- no pets, can’t afford one. Unless you count the roaches in his apartment.

Wiggle/Gramble- What kind of pets doesn’t Gramble have? Man lives in a zoo basically. After getting fired from his pet store job, he adopted any animal they had/refused to sell. Cats, dogs, fish, hamsters, mice, rats, bunnies, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds- he has it all. And they’re all extremely well taken care of.

For Wiggle, at some point before she met Gramble, she had a betta fish in a bowl that died shortly after, and it discouraged her from pet keeping for a long time. Once Gramble showed her the ropes on pet care, she understood it a lot better. She now has a large tank of angelfish and a macaw that she loves dearly. The macaw and her sing to each other all the time, inspiring her to make many new songs.

Snorpy/Chandlo- Chandlo really wanted a dog but Snorpy was too nervous about keeping it. Eventually he caved because he can’t say no to Chandlo. They now have a pitbull that look mean but is an enormous scaredy baby with anything, hence him connecting with Snorpy a bit more. Chandlo also has a huge tank full of monster fish like bichirs, arowanas, and red tailed catfish. Snorpy isn’t interested in fish keeping but he does like building Chandlo devices that make the tank run like a well-oiled machine.

Floofty- I discussed this as my own AU but Floofty has a three legged tuxedo cat that they named Toaster (“because much like a toaster, she jumps out at me”). The cat distribution system worked out in their favor one day after Snaktooth, and they found Toaster in the rain soaking wet, and her meowing at them. They refused to keep her at first because it was a frivolous idea to keep a pet but once Toaster chose them as her chosen grumpus, they quickly fell in love with her. They were in a huge depression for a long time after losing their leg permanently, and Toaster helped bring them out of it, slowly but surely. She’ll do things like follow them around the house, keep them company while grading papers, and cuddle on their lap when they’re in pain. They’re more reserved about how much they adore her in public but in private, they’ll let her know. Toaster has one brain cell but a heart full of love.

Shelda- Shelda has a pond full of koi fish and goldfish in her yard, she can’t keep much else though because of her joints so something like a dog would be too much for her.

Clumby- has a fat ass orange cat. I wonder why?

Junker queen: she's always wanted a dog, and after being introduced to a new game by y/n she decided on the one she wanted. A German Shepard! She did a ton of research on them and got one from a shelter with only three legs, she ended up creating a junker leg for it and help from mercy getting it attached safely. She named him Dogmeat, based on her new favorite game, fallout 4.

Orisa: she wasn't big on the idea of having a pet, due to the fear of her size being an issue for such a small creature. However that changed when she encountered a Boston terrier puppy on a mission last spring. The small dog was full of energy and refused to leave Orisas side even when she tried to shoot it away. But eventually followed her onto the airship where she gave him and wanted to take care of them. She eventually named him Winston after an animated short film about a Boston terrier that another overwatch agent had shown her. (Much to Winston's confusion.)

Ramattra: He has an ant farm that was gifted to him from y/n after he mentioned his fascination of the tiny creatures. He cares for them dearly, and is often dozing off just watching them work throughout their colony in his office. He's not named them, as there is far too many, but when he's observing them you can faintly catch him mumbling their job titles with praise.

Reinhardt: He's got a sweet old golden retriever he rescued from a shelter, she was twelve when he adopted her and no one seemed to want the older dog which broke his heart. He was told to expect maybe another good year or two before the 'inevitable', however she's turning sixteen in a week now. Her name is Tillie.

Zarya: she took in an adult cat from a fellow agent that had sadly fallen in battle, one she was relatively close to. The cat was a nebelung and quite pampered, however he seems to adora Zarya as much as she does him. An elegant grey ball of fluff that constantly curls up to her side after her training sessions or missions. His name is Pietro, and for some reason he does not seem to like Ramattra.

Roadhog: he has two rats, one is a light cream color with a darker brown splotch on his right side. And the other is white and black spotted with little streaks of brown by her tail. Their names are junk and pile, and he found them in a box in the rain while on a mission. No one really noticed at first when he had gotten back on the airship until they were about halfway back to base and realized he was holding his hands out and just staring at was in his palms. Every now and again you'll see him walking around base with them on his shoulders and they just sit there and observe.

D.va: she has a bunny, it's actually one that she unintentionally saved while on a raiding mission against Talon. She ended up in moira's lab which had been abandoned when the alarms were set off, and it was the only one that seemed to be left in the room inside a cage where it was scared and hiding in the corner. Her name is June and she enjoys occasionally riding in D.vas mech with her. June absolutely hates hearing the name Moira now.

Sigma: he has a betta fish, specifically an alien betta. Sombra noticed that sigma had been pretty lonely while doing research in his lab on his own. So she surprised him with a whole betta setup, and made sure he knew everything that was needed to take care of it. It was a brilliant green color and sigma was overjoyed when she presented him the fish. He adoringly named her plutonium, and spends hours upon hours just talking to his betta fish about all of his research and findings and hypotheses. Plutonium does respond by swimming in circles whenever he gets excited and if she's bored she floats upside down.

I feel like Shin is a pet guy.

I imagine him owning a lot of different things. He's a cat person, so a cat is on the table, but I could also see him enjoying a simpler pet like a betta fish. I could see him as a lizard or turtle person, too. He seems like the type to get a turtle in childhood without knowing their lifespan, and then twenty years later, he has a pet that will likely outlive him.

What I can't see him owning is anything classified as a farm animal. I also don't think he'd want to own a dog simply because of how much exercise they need. I don't think he'd be a bird person either because they're loud and messy, but I still think he'd own a bird before an animal that needed to be walked daily.

I am genderfluid (they/them) and bisexual. I have short curly black hair with brown/hazel (idk I've been told I have both?) eyes. I'm pale, 5'3 and on the more chubby side. I wear glasses because I'm blind and can't see shit.

I have dyslexia and probably autism but I haven't got tested so Idk. Math has always been very hard for me to understand it in do great in subjects like history.

I am very introverted and tend to avoid social interactions, and I tend to be very judgemental and once I don't like you, I don't like you and will probably never like you. I can be spiteful but id never be outwardly rude of shit talk someone because I tend to freeze up during confrontation but I don't let anyone walk on me, i stand my ground and pick my battles wisely. Im very quiet and have been told I am a great listener and would make a good therapist. While in school I would go weeks without saying a single word but then when I got home it was like I couldn't shut up. Speaking in a public setting is genuinely terrifying to me and it feels like my mouth and glued shut whenever I try to. I am very connected to the environment and its creatures, and feel like I'm able to trust and get along with other animals better then I am people. My one big goal in life is to start a farm/animal rescue. Some of my favorite animals are alligators and crocodiles, and I could probably spill facts about them for hours if someone let me. I tend to be very protective of my things and schedule and get upset when people disrupt or move things. I have a spot for everything and if something isn't in it's spot or gets rearranged somewhere else I get anxious. I collect a lot of things and grow attached to them quickly. I am immensely independent because I am afraid of asking for help. I know exactly what i want and what i need, and I'll manage to do anything to get it. Humor and laughter is a key part of me and what i seek in life. But also trust and loyalty, those are all qualities i possess and seek in others. I tend to overthink sometimes and get paranoid about people leaving me.

My hobbies include art, I like to draw silly little doodles of things. video games, two or my favorite games are doom and silent hill 2. And I enjoyed caring for and spending time with my pets, which I have a lot of. 4 dog, 3 cats, 4 betta fish, 8 chickens, a wild turtle that lives in my backyard, and a bearded dragon. Im planning on getting a Jacksons chameleon and some goats when I have the space.

Remember this tank?

It was the home of our rescue betta Juniper, confiscated along with him from my brother-in-law.

Juniper passed about a year ago and the tank has mainly been a scuds farm while I was working on other projects.

Uh, that was overdue for a thorough cleaning. Also ditched the hood with its useless light.

I only cleaned the front of the tank- I let biofilm and algae grow on the other sides to provide grazing for the snails, shrimp, and other microfauna.

Here I also added some Aquasoil with root tabs for the plants.

Capping it with sand. I had originally intended to use white sand again, except as I was reminded with Cistern, white sand generally doesn't stay white past the tank maturing. I had some difficulty finding a natural darker sand that wasn't ridiculously expensive, but eventually settled on Exo Terra's Riverbed.

Securing sticks in place as the hardscape. These are Japanese maple; their branches always form such interesting shapes. They came from my neighbor's damn tree that keeps dropping them into my garden, so as an added bonus they're also free.

Attached epiphytes and started gently filling. Added botanicals with microfauna.

Planted with cuttings from my other tanks. Also threw a handful of assorted snails in there. The filter media is very mature, but it needs bigger inhabitants to keep it going.

It's been cycling for almost two months, now. I haven't added any fish since I'd be adding either a betta or Microrasbora, and I still need to make a new lid to prevent jumping.

It's also been too cold to ship tropical plants, which I'm planning to use for the riparium feature to complete this build.

i think the reason so many people think they are against leather is that they don't distinguish between leather and exotic pelt production. one is taking advantage of the resources we already have while the other unnecessary wastes them

Oh no vegans and ARAs just think it's like. Morbid or something to wear something else's skin. I call it respecting the sacrifice of the animal and not letting any part of it go to waste.

They KNOW this shit comes from cows. But wearing cow skin is disturbing to them. Cow's gonna die anyway. So you're sacrificing the lives of countless fish to save the hide of one cow who's still gonna die, except its hide will rot instead of being put to use. Fucking wasteful.

Tbh there's a common thing of fish not being considered "worthy" of life though. Look at betta bowls, goldfish bowls, fish being given away as rewards at carnivals. A lot of people consider fish more on par with insects in the compassion department despite their intelligence and ability to feel pain and socially bond. And vegans/ARAs MASSIVELY show their hand and morals when they buy pleather knowing the environmental impact is has on microplastics in the ocean, but I guess the life of a few thousand fish aren't more important that the life of one cow who's gonna die anyway ay?

They bitch about the biggest impact to the environment? It's pollution. You're not polluting shit when you take an animal's hide and tan it and make it into a vest or shoes or what have you. But pleather? The entire production process is pollution.

But vegans don't care cuz they don't have to think about it. That's pretty par the course. "Plant food is humane" while ignoring the pollution from pesticides, the billions of animals killed every year from combine machines like deer and foxes and wildlife, to pesticides, to the people like me who are hired to shoot wildlife what feed on plant crops so it can reach THEIR tables.

Miss me with that "It's grown to feed livestock too." I was a stockman and all the cattle and sheep I ever drove were free-range grazed.

I really have given fish short shrift so far! Just one published goldfish that barely counts, an unreleased betta, and two other unpublished motifs where the fish is an anonymous snack. No good at all!

I do have a handful of farm animals that I did back in very early days but haven't written up yet…

…and if I were a more sensible kind of person i'd just add a cow, a turkey, a sheep, a sheepdog, a barn cat and a rooster, plus or minus—and call it Farm Friends. Country Colleagues. Instead, I'm over here having a tortured ontological debate with myself only about what constitutes a "farm animal:"
