Mahi mahi, Dolphinfish, Dorado & Lampuga, all names for the Coryphaena hippurus! These colourful fish are found in the Mediterranean Sea at this time of year (August-November), often aggregating underneath objects floating on the surface.

They live for up to five years, and can get to a meter in length!

there’s a video somewhere out in the world that haunts me and i cannot find it no matter how hard i search. i first saw it on tumblr years ago.

it’s a screen recording of someone’s desktop. they open a program and run a file in it that shows a short looping animation of a 3D modeled fish swimming. they pull up task manager (or something similar) and watch as the fish consumes progressively more and more resources until their computer crashes. there is upbeat music playing in the background throughout.

For anyone curious, this is Lophius americanus also called a monkfish or goosefish! I'm a big fan of one of their common names, the "All-mouth." They're a commercially caught fish off the east coast of the USA.

These guys sit on the seafloor as ambush predators and use a lure to attract prey.

They're in the order Lophiiformes which also includes anglerfish, batfish, sea toads, and frog fish!

They aren't venomous or poisonous, however they do have sharp little needle teeth and are all around a little pointy which is why the caution in getting it off the boat.

A cool fact about them is that it takes this fish between 1-5 minutes to complete one breathing cycle depending on it's size! For comparison, this is around 30x faster than an average fish and 100x faster than a goldfish (Farina and Bemis, 2016).
