Mutual pining + “I really wanna kiss you right now” with Carmy

here's a lazy, a leftover blurb from my 1.5k celebration!!

he looks at you curiously, watching your rhythm as you slice up a fresh lemon to accompany the dish. you’re workshopping something in his kitchen, in the middle of the fucking night. you wear sleep shorts and a large tee, swimming in the fabric as you silently help him sort out the dish in his head. 

he’d seen it in a dream, because of course carmen berzatto’s unconcious mind would place him in a kitchen. you garnish it for him, and his own hands place a sweet yet savory cherry sauce to go with the steak fillet.

you squeeze the fresh lemon over the meat, then take a slice for yourself. you bite down on it, face scrunching up at the sour taste, but you don’t seem upset. when you finish enjoying the fruit your grin rivals the bright shade of the rind, dazzling him. carmen can’t look away.

“i- uh. i really wanna kiss you,” he mutters, thumb reaching up to brush over your jaw. “can i?”

you cut him off, sealing your lips to his own. he whines when you taste like lemon and a hint of the cigarette he’d shared with you. he licks eagerly into your mouth, hands coming to rest on your hips and draw you closer.

carmy’s first word was sugar. not mom, sugar. at first, he’d just say “sug!” in the middle of babbling. mikey was the first to hear it, and he carried carmy up to sugar and said “wanna tell her what you learned?” and carmy says it again, and sugar gets so excited. she shows donna, and donna is pissed. “he’s just fuckin babbling natalie. his first words gonna fuckin be mommy like a normal fuckin child”

then, a few weeks later. he says it. donna picks him up and he starts screaming and crying and wails “SUGAR!!!!”

donna gives both nat and little 10 month old carmy the silent treatment for a week. but every time sugar picks him up he giggles her name out, and natalie feels like the proudest big sister ever

Sugar calling Sydney only after Pete had me in tears, in the most vulnerable moment of her life, her second choice wasn't Richie or Carmy, two people she KNOWS would move heaven and earth to help her (everything to avoid therapy, but whatever), but instead, it was the girl who came into their lives like a force of nature. I love my girls so much 😭♥️

ive been awake for ... 28hrs at this point so. apologies for any mischaracterization. pls just gloss over it in ur mind. thank u for requesting, this was fun to write bc i havent written family centric dynamic in quite a bit!

"listen jagoff, you keep y'fuckin hands off my sister," carmen growls, to which you blush rapidly. he'd come out of nowhere like a hornet, anger on his features and footsteps heavy in the nearly empty dining area.

"it's- uh, 's okay carmy, he was just-" you're interrupted by your brother's fingers curling gently around your wrist, moving his body between you and the patron.

"no, 's not alright-" he begins, but now it's his turn to be interrupted.

the man that had been touchy with you now stands. "i think you should let the girl speak. i wasn't talking' to you, who do you think you are, talking to a customer like that?"

"who am-" carmen shouts, laughing and shaking his head. "listen, i'm only gonna say this once. you need to get the fuck out of my restaurant before i take you out of here myself." you can see his hands ball into fists, and a quick glance towards the kitchen window shows you that richie is already headed to intervene.

"yeah? what're you gonna do about it?" the man asks, testing carmen, seeing if he'll react.

you swear he's about to swing on the asshole before richie is grabbing him by the shoulder, pulling him backwards towards the kitchen. you stand in silent shock for a moment, unsure if you should apologize for your brother's actions or trail back towards the safety of the kitchen. your eyes meet luca's as he steps into the dining area, cocking his head as if to ask 'you alright?'

you nod, giving him a sweet little smile as you pass by him, hurrying after richie and carmen. by the time you've made it out back he's already lit a cigarette, and you reach out your hand to ask for a hit. he passes it over, running an anxious hand through his hair.

"you don't have to protect me, bear. i can hold my own," you tell him. the cigarette rests snugly between your lips as you inhale, then pass it back to him. you look up, watching the smoke drift off into the night.

"yeah, well..." he shakes his head. "i know you can. but you're my baby sister, 'm always gonna protect you."

I have to ask, while I do ship Sydney & Carmy together romantically, I wouldn’t be mad if they didn’t end up together. I’m just here for a well-written story that makes sense for the characters. Prior to me shipping Sydney & Carmy, I believed that they would become good friends & business partners in the end, but I was still open to a possible romance, if it made sense.

That being said, I haven’t really seen any in-depth analysis of Sydney & Carmy’s relationship from those who consider them strictly platonic (i.e. brother & sister dynamic, mentor/mentee dynamic, etc.). I have to be honest, I only ever see people say that they see them as brother & sister, or mentor/mentee whenever people say that they ship them, or that they can see them dating or becoming romantic in the end, like as a way to shoot down those views.

So, for those who do view them as only platonic, what has the show shown you that leads you to believe what you do about their relationship?
