The thought just occurred to me that Belle-mere is 100% abandoned veteran representation. She was an active combat soldier for two years, nearly giving her life to serve the marines. She had an officer rank, and was a good, reliable fighter. Then she came back wounded, decided to retire and start a family, and got zero support. No pension, no nothing. She and the girls were poor to the point of starvation risk and Nami turned to stealing just to get one thing she liked. Arlong's price to let her and her daughters live was 200,000 beri, which sounds like a lot, but beri is closer to yen, basically worth less than a cent. Belle-mere had to give up her kids or her life over the lack of about $1,000, if that. And when she did die for it, she was buried in a pauper's grave and no one from the marines was even in contact enough to hear about it. Then when the marines do come? They accept Arlong's money. They never honor Belle-Mere's death or do anything to help her daughters. They dig up her tangerines and steal Nami's fortune when she's moments away from buying her freedom. Who knows if they ever even crossed her name out in their records? No freaking wonder Nami had no love for the marines despite her mom being one. They chewed Belle-mere up and spit her out.

just got struck with a vision of nami getting extremely sick to the point of being delirious and robin stopping in to check on her, perhaps read to her while she's in the infirmary. and she brushes a calloused hand over nami's forehead and nami, in a very small voice, calls her belle-mere.

Moving from the MHA fandom to the One Piece fandom is quite a trip because oh boy the latter is so much better at understanding what is and isn’t a gag in terms of child abuse. Most One Piece fans will tell you Kureha, Bellemere, and Zeff are good parents with little to no pushback from other fans. Kureha throws knives at Chopper, Bellemere bonks Nami and Nojiko on the heads, Zeff kicks Sanji around, but the fans understand these are all meant to be gags so they don’t call them abusive. Sure, they may not like that violence towards offspring is portrayed in a comedic slapstick light, and criticize accordingly, but they understand Oda’s intent that these are meant to show they are rough and tough love families and do not use it to judge the characters themselves as though they were real life people. You will not get accused of being pro corporal punishment if you call Kureha, Bellemere, or Zeff good parents in the One Piece fandom.

The MHA fandom on the other hand? They INSIST the slapstick moment of Mitsuki hitting Katsuki MUST make her 100% abusive, and if you point out it’s a gag, you’ll get accused of being an abuse apologist or endorsing corporal punishment. Horikoshi’s intention does not matter to them, they can’t even just say they understand Mitsuki isn’t abusive but don’t like that her hitting Bakugo is portrayed as a joke like some One Piece fans do on this subject, no, they’d rather write long essays and fics on why this slapstick gag moment makes her an evil abuser.

This gap in literacy between the One Piece and MHA fandom is fascinating, though don’t get me wrong the One Piece fandom itself is FAR from perfect and still has illiteracy on different matters, including other gags (wish they also understood the same logic applies to Sanji’s gag) but here, they understand it better than the MHA fandom.

Also in the Foster child au Arlong was in a gang before he meet Bell-mère and Hody Jones was a new member of the gang when Arlong meet Bell-mère and then Arlong left the gang life and Hody blamed her for his idol going soft and he's the one who caused the car accident

Yep, that checks out. I'd like to think that Hody blaming Bellemere is the reason that he hates humans, or I guess in this case... idk... women? He does strike me as a misogynist tbh, though then again, it could be just because I really just don't like him hahaha

Maybe he even tried to go after Nami and Nojiko and that's just one more reason for Arlong to become as restricting as he is.

Rosinante and Belle-Mere are a gay man and a wlw who are married and in love (queer?)platonically and they kiss and even have sex with each other. And they have approximately six thousand adopted children and they both clown on their previous employers. He may be almost twice as high as her but he is the failmalewife in this situation and she is the girlbosshusband.

I moved this one up on the posting list even though it breaks the chronicle posting because I feel like people would like it more if I posted it now given the OPLA hype is still here a bit. I'm pretty sure this was the first edit I made that I isolated and removed the original background music! Sick, good to know. That's why I can hear background music so well, cos I know what important scenes sound like split up. Anyway, this song makes me SOB any time I think about it because Bell-mère holds a super close place in my heart. She reminds me of my sibling that I spent a lot of time with growing up and also now because we still live in the same house together. You'd think that with how much Bell-mère means to me, Nami would be my favourite Strawhat but she's not, she's not even in my top 5/10.

ooo thank you!! let's see what we've got here 15. What’s your favorite AU that you’ve written?

immediately hitting me in the kneecaps with a lead bat i see. hmm. my favorite AU i've written. that's so hard. i'm gonna throw a curveball and answer trouble, trouble, toilsome trouble. it's extremely niche and self-indulgent but i'm really happy with the universe and the writing style and it's just my personal favorite. i had a lot of fun writing it. does it have a point? not really. it was just a joke prompt some friends gave me that was basically "what if bell-mere and her gf pegged rosinante" and then it spiraled into 4 chapters somehow. as my stories tend to do.

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

i gotta update my wip list but i had an idea that i've since given up about the dq bros if they never left mariejois, and if arlong sold bell-mere into slavery rather than killing her, and then doflamingo bought her as housewarming gift for rosinante. maybe i'll get back to it but i couldn't decide what kind of tone i wanted, couldn't decide if rosi and bell should get shipped or remain weird platonic frenemies, couldn't decide how it would end. too much for me to think about with my schedule, and i'm not sure i'll ever have time to pick it up again.

23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?

one day i want to write horror. i don't know how to write horror. i don't really like horror. but i want to write something that disturbs people in a good way, yknow? otherwise i tend to be pretty good for writing about every trope and AU that interests me XD

38. Did any of your fics get surprisingly popular (whatever that means to you)? Which ones? Why do you think they were so successful?

YES. donut miss your chance! i wrote it for @gali-la like a year ago and it blew up. i still have no idea why. katakuri x rosinante aren't a huge ship...? and it was kind of long for a oneshot? i'm assuming maybe the coffee shop, fluff and humor tags attracted some people but idk. i'm not totally sure what lured the people in but they were sure lured. it's still one of my top 5 most popular fics.
