Both of them can be seen as the 'it's not like that' guy because they both want power more than the child itself but it is way harder to say that for Vander and way less commonly the case. They both want the minors, they both are obsessed with the minors, they both get very inappropriately excited to see these children.

Many people compared Steven's experience as a gem human hybrid with the experience of a trans and non binary kid, and while I also like those parallelisms and think they are valid, I also really like the Intersex reading of his character. You know, ever since he was born he was different. He challenged a binary of a world with only gems and humans and nothing in between. He felt as he couldn't relate to any side despite technically being both. Some see him as a weak gem, other as a human freak, its similar to how some intersex people are just reduced to "having both parts" or get referred to as perisex with extras.

But in the end, Steven realises that he is just himself. Steven. He becomes comfortable in embracing each side of himself in his own way that is different yet similar to gems and humans. Because he isn't a freak. He is something unique and beautiful. He is just Steven. "Change your mind" really cemented all of this with Pink Steven and Human Steven. And I think its a very well written metaphor that can also be read this way.
