Billy Batson/Captain Marvel as the first Superhero
I think it would be really cool if Captain Marvel was the first superhero to start operating in the DC universe.
When he receives his powers at 7, he's supposed to be just protecting the Rock of Eternity and dealing with certain magic threats as the past Champions have, but he can't resist helping people so he also begins watching over Fawcett City.
He sticks to his city for the most part, but every once in a while he'll see a disaster on the news and go help. He's busy with being the Champion of Magic and a homeless kid so he never sticks around for interviews. He's something of a mystery to the world at large.
Five years after he becomes Captain Marvel, Batman and Superman come onto the scene. Superman actually seeks Marvel out for advice when he's getting started. (I love the idea of Captain Marvel being an inspiration for Superman in this universe.)
Eventually when the Justice League forms they invite Captain Marvel to join. He asks for a rain check but gives them a magic mirror to contact him with. He helps them out occasionally and is something of a mentor/advisor to them.
When Robin comes on the scene the League is surprised that Marvel doesn't get upset and Batman. Marvel does however pull him aside and talk to him about the importance of balancing his roles as a mentor and family to the kid.
"He needs to know that being loved and having a home doesn't hinge on how he does as a hero," He tells Batman firmly. "Or if he even chooses to stay a hero."
In this universe Dick and Bruce end up having a better relationship.
He makes sure Robin and then each of the other young heroes that rise up in his wake have an emergency summoning charm for him. The younger heroes view him an honorary grandfather of sorts. They often go to him for advice, especially if they are having a problem with their mentors, since he seems to just get it.
No one's quite sure how old he is. He doesn't visibly age. When asked about depictions of the previous Champions he tells the other heroes that they are and aren't him. (As Marvel Billy has all the memories of the past Champions, but it doesn't quite carry over to his mortal form). When other heroes invite him to share a beer he says he's not old enough. They think he's joking or perhaps that it hasn't been 21 years since he formed (They figure he's weird enough to count it that way).
I'm torn between having him aging normally as Billy and the League not finding out until he's legally and adult or some sort of shenanigans happening in Fawcett resulting in time being messed up there so he's forever 7 (or his age shifts around but he's always a kid.) Both possibilities are interesting.
Either way I love the idea that he's not really hiding the fact that he's a kid from them, he just doesn't view it as relevant. All remarks that he makes that could reveal him as a kid tend to get dismissed as him being a magical being created by the gods or just his odd personality. Bruce hasn't looked for Marvel's secret id because he thinks he doesn't have one. This misunderstanding comes from him taking the League to the Rock of Eternity one time. He has a nice little living area set up where he hangs out sometimes. (Not too often though because time at the Rock of Eternity is weird.) They all just assume he lives there.

Ghosts and Danny Phantom With the JLA
Guys, guys, I like some DP x DC as much as the next person. It's fun. It's whimsical. There are many ✨️✨️opportunities✨️✨️ for trauma and whimsy. I'm not immune to the appeal.
But can we please, please stop with the whole "Only John Constantine knows how to deal with ghosts" or "the Justice League are government shills and wouldn't help Danny" or "The JL just straight up ignored Amity Park for bad reasons and made a kid fight all this stuff on his own."
Superman can hear a cry for help in the far reaches of the solar system and smell brownies baking from space and know exactly where they are from (ask not how smell travels from Earth's atmosphere and into a vacuum and into an air tight space station; nor how sound travels through the vacuum of space in real time for him. The rules of your so-called "physics" do not apply to him). Unless there were some serious shenanigans at play, he's hearing a call for help and answering (we don't have to recognize these feats as canon, they are quite silly, but his senses are very good).
(Superman/Batman 2008 #46) (He is under the effects of silver kryptonite here...which seems to act like weed to him. He has the munchies real bad and is craving some chocolate)
(Superman 1987 #204)
You wanna talk ghosts and Justice League, there's the ghost hero Boston Brand, aka Deadman, who Batman helped solve the murder of. He was a performer who knew Dick Grayson in the circus and died similarly to the Flying Graysons (his high-risk act was sabotaged) and the early Nightwing costume looks eerily similar to Deadman's. In some versions, Deadman helped Dick when he was learning how to do high-wire acts. Deadman just starts possessing people near an experienced Gotham Vigilante, or even Jim Gordon (Oh, yeah, Batman told me about you), and it might take a second but they're very quick on the uptake of speaking to Deadman now (Damian was not because he didn't know about Deadman yet). It's very casual for them.
(Blackest Night: Batman 2009 #1)
(Blackest Night: Batman 2009 #2)
The Speedsters can move so fast they can interact with ghosts and force them out from possessing them by using the Speed force:
(The Flash 2014 #28/#29)
Batman has dealt with so many ghosts he wouldn’t be phased by anything. He has developed ways to fight ghosts on his own with Nth metal batarangs.
(Batman Eternal 2014 #6)
Batman also treats with child ghosts kindly, multiple times. Ghosts of children being dealt with by Batman is a recurring event.
Traveling from Gotham to Austria specifically to let a spirit rest by offering her the heart of her murderer (who Batman did not kill, to be clear, he just acquired it from the corpse):
(Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight 1989 #10)
The remains of a ghost of a girl that was going to be sacrificed to trap a demon in Gotham hundreds of years ago gets buried next to Bruce's parents like his sister:
(Batman 1940 #454)
Batman comforting the spirit of a child who has been possessing people and murdering people because he's angry about his death and not being able to be with his parents anymore:
(Batman: Gotham Knights 2000 #4)
Batman knows how to summon ghosts (Deadman here, to solidify him):

(Batman/Deadman: Death and Glory 1997 #1)
Ghosts in Gotham are so regular that Robins know how to check for traces of ectoplasm when dealing with the supernatural. It is on the checklist for confirming what bullshit they're dealing with today.
(DC Pride: Tim Drake Special 2022 #1)
Speaking of ghosts and Robins, did you know that one of Young Justice's first members after the founding three was Greta Hayes, aka Secret? She had several powers, including changing her form, but she initially couldn't pass through objects like a normal ghost.
(Young Justice: The Secret 1998 #1)
(Young Justice 1998 #7)
The government agency called the DEO (Department of Extranormal Operations), had been experimenting on her and asked them to find her and bring her back, but when they found her and she told them what was really going on, they told the DEO to get fucked and helped save other metas being held at the same facility Greta had been. And then she was a part of the team until she got brought back to life and could live normally as a civilian. Young Justice is hounded by APES (All Purpose Enforcement Squad) around the globe because they helped Secret.
(Young Justice 1998 #4)
In summary, the DC heroes would not say "oh, ghosts, yeah, you’re a prank caller, bye-bye." Or help the guys in white. Or for one goddamn second believe ghosts don’t have sentience. Or not be immediately seeing red over the "Anti-Ecto Control Act." Hell, when the JL is contacted by the DEO whining about Young Justice's involvement with Secret, Batman's very clear that he does not trust the DEO. I doubt Batman, of Gotham "every government official is dirty" City, would just trust the guys in white at all.
(Young Justice: The Secret 1998 #1)
Danny would not be some marvelously weird and super special guy to them. The ghosts in Danny Phantom are a little weird compared to ghosts normally seen in DC (being more tangible, physical, and powerful), but it's not mind blowing or impossible to wrap their heads around (new species of ghost they have to learn about). He would just be another kid hero, ghost king au or not. Captain Marvel is a 14 year old boy who can look like a guy in his 30s through the 'Wisdom of Solomon.' Martian Manhunter can fly and turn invisible and shape-shift (and read minds). They have fought the concept of Death itself, Nekron, and an army of undead:
(Blackest Night 2009 #8)
Like yes, they would like to help Danny, ofc, and they would be upset if he had been captured and tortured, obviously, but nothing he could say would phase them in an earth-shattering way, alright? So many heroes and villains have died and come back to life. They've been tortured and hurt. They're just going to trauma share with Danny ("yeah, that reminds me of the time..." or "Oh, that sounds like something so and so talked about..."). They aren't going to cower before the Ghost King, or whatever title he has in the ghost king au.
You cannot have Danny be young enough to be equal to any of the Teen Titans/Young Justice and have him be this super weird thing to them. You cannot have a fully formed Justice League and have them ignore calls for help from Amity Park. It's just. It's not how they work.
Justice League Dark, the supernatural/occult branch of the JLA, is led by Wonder freaking Woman in some instances, and do you think this warrior woman who squares up with any conquering god on the regular with her god/spirit-containing Lasso of Truth is going to ignore Danny/Amity Park for "safety"? Pfffft. Nope. Pariah Dark pops up and she wants to get tagged in on the fight. Hell, she's tagging herself in for the fight.
(Wonder Woman 2016 #62) (She is trash-talking Ares, God of War, on how to use her Lasso of Truth. I love her so much.)
(Wonder Woman 1942 #607) (oh, look, her being kind to a dead spirit of a dangerous creature her allies want dead)
Justice League Dark also has the Spectre, the avenging angel of God (yes, that God. Judeo-Christian God, aka The Presence). The Spectre is a spirit, so the most powerful ghost they know.
(Detective Comics 1937 #1006) (Notice, how Batman does not give a singular flying fuck about how strong the Spectre is while arguing against the Spectre's Old Testament style vengeance?)
If you wanna go the route of Amity Park being ignored, you need to get creative with it. There was a period of time where Lex Luthor was president trying to outlaw being a superhero and Amanda Waller was in charge of the DEO, and so you can have them do some bullshit that Vlad can even get in on to isolate Amity Park, maybe that's when the Anti-Ecto Acts became a thing because Lex and Waller are meanaces. Hell, maybe even the Reality Gauntlet or DC magic using villains are the deus ex here. Or weird timeline shit after Clockwork fixes things in a Glitch in Time and the worlds are suddenly merged and believe they always were originally. Or. Maybe it's Clockwork meddling trying to mold Danny for a ghost king au. There are limitless possibilities that don't involve making the JL complete assholes/incompetent morons in ways they never would be.
There's even room for funny shenanigans. The Bat of whatever team meets Danny is told "the ghost boy in Amity is violent and dangerous" and they're suddenly there trying to help him solve his murder so he can move on and Danny’s just "???"
Maybe the guys hounding Young Justice for Secret are actually the GIW. Maybe the facility she was in had files on Danny too. Maybe Clark, Conner, Jon, or Kara get hit with silver kryptonite and track down the Fenton residence for fudge. Maybe that's how they break through whatever is shielding Amity from the world, a Kryptonian got sent to space on a silver kryptonite trip. Idfk. Bring the whimsy into it. Please. I'm so tired of the "you left us to rot because you thought we were joking" posts.
Please. Just some whimsy. Or some creativity. Or just blame it all on Clockwork. I beg of you. You can have your angst, god knows we need our angst, but just don't destroy the DC characters in the process. They're so much fun, and have such rich histories, and ghosts have been such a long standing part of their world that I would appreciate that not being ignored, even if canon is a sandbox and you can do whatever you want. I'm just tired of it, especially since some of these things predate the Justice League itself.
#dpxdc#dcxdp#dp x dc#dc x dp#I cast “read the comics”#canon vs fanon#canon (derogatory)#fanon (also derogatory)#I need to find ground zero for this concept#That just keeps getting passed around like a game of telephone#Where it is constantly getting worse and worse#with every iteration#I would be okay with Danny believing it#being tricked somehow#but it just cannot be true#I will 100% accept anything orchestrated by Clockwork#without any further explanation required whatsoever#but also#the image of#silver kryptonite leading to a Kryptonian of choice#landing at Fentonworks#for some Fenton Family Famous Fudge#is killing me

What I find interesting about Cass and ballet in Tynion's Detective Comics (2016) is not so much the communication or artistic expression aspect, but what it means for Cass' relationships to women.
From the beginning, Cass + ballet is heavily tied to her relationships with women. In Batman & Robin: Eternal #7, she first watches the ballet with Harper Row:
Ballet isn't just about "understand[ing] everything" (as Harper says), but about the physical and emotional connection Cass forges with Harper in this moment. The way their hands grasp onto each other symbolises the potential for ballet to form women-to-women bonds. Since this is N52, Cass' relationships with Babs and Steph have been sadly obliterated, so this is her very first connection to another woman.
Then, in Detective Comics #950, we meet Christine Montclair:
Christine is a ballerina who has been "handed" a key to the main stage by "the late Elaine Torsky," and who hopes to hand "that key to another young girl." Ballet becomes linked with a feminine legacy, one tied to "know[ing] exactly who she wants to become." The ideas of a female legacy and coming into one's identity strongly echo Cass' relationship to the Batgirl mantle, and the importance of female relationships to Cass' sense of self.
Ballet is, also, a storytelling medium - Tynion emphasises the importance of storytelling through #955's scene between Christine and Cass, where Christine reads her a story. She mentions that her mom used to read this to her. This is clearly an allusion to Shiva (since this arc is about Shiva), but more broadly this scene points to matrilineal connection through stories, something that Babs and Cass actually do in DC First: Batgirl/Joker. In that issue, Babs tells the story of her first encounter with Joker, which inspires Cass to do the same. Cass' mimicry - something she also does with Christine, copying her movements in the ballet school - showcase her desire for connection with other women.
(The book is also written by Carolyn Wu-San, another connection between women, stories, and family.)
And it's this connection to women that allows Cass to say her name, harkening back to Babs giving her her name in NML. This scene is also funny to me because Tynion created Orphan but he's aware the name is not something Cass actually likes - if anything, 'Orphan' feels like a punishment Cass imposed upon herself (especially in this arc, which doesn't reference that Orphan came from her dad).
It's just interesting that ballet and storytelling are mediums in which Cass finds an expression of herself, but it's not because of the communicative aspect - she never actually performs in front of anyone. Instead, it's the feminine community and legacy that allows Cass to discover herself beyond Orphan.
All this to say it's a shame Cass couldn't be Batgirl here because I really like the parallel of female legacy between ballet and Batgirl, but it gets lost without acknowledging Batgirl (2000) and DC First: Batgirl/Joker. But conceptually, Cass and ballet is about so much more than her 'communicating' via dance, and the role women and stories play in her love for ballet should be acknowledged more.
#cassandra cain#christine montclair#meta#YES i'm tagging christine YES this was an excuse to talk about christine#but more broadly i do think cass and ballet is pigeonholed into 'look how flowery and delicate she is' which is not at all what it should b#idk idk tynion's run had a lot of problems but i lowkey love it still#no other run has explored cass' relationship to art and no other run (besides bg 2000) has explored cass losing someone (clayface)#all this to say i'm a bit sad tynion's tec got less votes in my second best cass run poll than batgirls '22...#also bg 2008 beating gates of gotham....#but at least we all agree spirit world rocks spirit world sweep!!

Do you think that's actually his dream date? Does he vet his potential partners by taking them to Blüdhaven and letting them spectate as he socks his brother in the face?

Ok you refer to selina as the matriarch of the batfam, and that makes me curious what are her relationships with each of them? I know her an jason def have a good relationship, but besides that i know nothing
Please enlighten me
Dick - Selina has known Dick since he was 8, and at first Dick didn’t really understand her and Bruce’s relationship, or what it was about this specific woman that caused his new father figure to fall over like a Skyrim character

Batman #1 / Batman #3 / Batman #15
But Dick also got to see Selina’s good side, she saves him from the Joker in Batman #2, and saves Batman at risk to her own life in Batman #62, Dick starts to realize she’s more complicated than just “villain”
Dick goes to Selina when seeking help against Talia during the Lazarus affair. Catwoman helps him and the family during Battle for the Cowl and continues to Support Dick as Batman even when they have disagreements

Gotham City Sirens (2010) #7
Nowadays they’re still very close and Dick pretty much considers her his stepmom in all but legal writing. They’re both very protective of each other, and have a real family relationship. Here is another post of some of my fave moments -> X
Babs - I love the dynamic between Babs and Selina sooo much. I have a post on my fave moments here and here
Selina serves as a kind of role model, not just to Barbara, but to pretty much every young female vigilante. And as Selina is a complicated woman, a character you can’t fit into the box of “good” or “bad”, she challenges them world view of characters like Barbara, the daughter of a cop who certainly needs her worldview challenged occasionally.

Birds of Prey: Catwoman/Oracle
Nowadays Catwoman is someone Oracle can count on to help out when the city or family needs her. Oracle has helped out Catwoman plenty of times, and sided with her in Gotham War. Babs and Dick even got to use the honeymoon suite that was going to by for the Batcat wedding lol!
You said you already knew abt Jason but here and here are posts about him and Selina for anybody curious, and here is one for Helena B :)
Tim - Selina meets him during the 90s and they’re an underrated duo! At first Selina is annoyed by this kid trying to get in her way, but eventually becomes protective and caring to him. She finds him adorable tbh

Robin #28
”He’s a goody two-shoes but I like the kid”

Catwoman (1993) #31
Steph & Cass - Steph and Selina first meet during War games after Bruce has fired Steph and she’s accidentally started a gang war. Selina is one of the only people to show Steph some empathy during this time.

Catwoman (2002) #34
Even though New 52 was bad, I do miss Steph being a recurring Catwoman character, and I think Selina is a great mentor character for her, and Steph is terribly underused anyway.
Steph, like Babs and most female Gotham vigilantes, undoubtedly saw a role model in Catwoman even if she wasn’t completely hero oriented. She was Batman’s equal, and confident enough to not need or care about having his approval or not, but good enough to get it anyway, of Course Steph seeks her out for training!

Batman Eternal (2015) #43
But unfortunately DC was making Selina do crime boss things instead of being Catwoman so Steph was briefly trained by Eiko who was running a training school. Selina recognized a lot of potential in Steph, and later “deputized” her by using her detective skills for a case

Catwoman (2011) #42 / #44
Later on, Eiko was planning on killing several heads of crime families, and Steph immediately tells Selina. And tearfully confesses to killing Bill Turner as well. Selina lies to make Steph feel better, not wanting her to become another lost soul

Catwoman (2011) #46
As for Cass, Selina is VERY impressed with her Immediately

Selina enjoys hanging out with her even if she’s the strong silent type <3

Batman: Gotham Secret Files and Origins (2000)
And one thing for sure, Selina will ALWAYS be there to help the girls if they need her :’)
Catwoman (2018) #45
Birds of Prey (2023) #14
Damian - Selina and Damian technically met during his time under Dick’s guardianship, but don’t really have an interaction till much later. During Bruce and Selina’s engagement, Damian asks if he’s going to have to call her “mom” Selina would never expect this of course, and assured him that he never needed to call her that, but she would always have his back as long as he has her’s. It reminds me of the way she assured Jason that he never had to replace Nocturna as a mother figure in his heart…she is just the sweetest
Batman Prelude to the Wedding #1
And of course, they bond over love of cats! Selina helped rescue Alfred the Cat in New Showcase (2018), and donated 3 million to an animal sanctuary in the East End in Damian’s name. Damian rescued Selina’s cat Otto in Legends of The Dark Knight (2013) #48

Duke - They haven’t interacted much but Selina has been part of his training!

Something about these panels just feel so poetic.
The way Shiva saw Mei as hers first and foremost and how letting her shine, even if it meant sharing her, was a way of love. Because offering freedom is one of the best ways Shiva is able to love someone.
How Cass claims Shiva as her mother, more importantly claims herself as Shiva's daughter as a way of showing love. Because that kind of claiming - like how Bruce claimed her as a daughter, she claimed Babs as a mother figure etc - is another form of love for Cass. How Cass sees being anchored to those she cares for as a way of being loved.

Then the way it weaves together these themes of Shiva and Cass and their views of love and suffering.
Shiva seems to believe that love inevitably leads to suffering, you can't have one without the other, which is why she has so much trouble loving openly in the present day, because it always leads to some sort of pain, trauma or loss.
She loved her parents, they were killed in front of her. She loved her village and it was burned down. She loved Mei and she was brutally murdered. She let her love drive her to get revenge for her sister and though we haven't seen it yet, based on past backstorys leading to Cass' birth, it likely ended up being a very traumatic thing for Shiva.
Even in loving Cass when she was born she lost her to Cain and the last of the softness she once held. Love always seems to lead to suffering.
Whereas Cass sees suffering as a form of love. Maybe the initial seeds for that mindset were planted by David Cain, who would likely be happy at Cass both inflicting and enduring suffering throughout her training.
Then how Bruce is openly proud and loving when she instinctively takes a bullet in Batgirl 2000, or how she offers to let Harper hurt her as much as she likes in Batman & Robin Eternal just for the chance of making her feel better because she loves Harper and is willing to suffer if it means making her feel better. She loves Bruce and was willing to suffer just to earn his approval.
Not to mention her empathy, she feels so much, especially for those she cares for and when they're hurting, she's hurting. I think Babs after her and Dick broke up in Batgirl 2000 is a good example of that, how Cass saw Barbara's pain and felt it as if it was her own.
She suffers when those she loves are suffering. She suffers for those she loves. Thus meaning suffering is a form of love.
