Avengers Vol 9 #1, part 1 of 2. This issue bounces between the formation of the new Avengers team and the threat they're currently fighting - I'll talk about the team in this post, and the threat in the second. Anyway. Apparently the most recently active Avengers have voted Carol to be their new chairperson, which means she gets to put together a new team. She thinks about why everyone does what they do - for Tony, it's because he wants to make up for his past; for Carol, it's Earth - "a gem of infinite worth".

Tony, looking really hecking handsome, tells her she needs to build her roster as they chill out in the Jarvis Lounge. She tells him he's his first pick. Aww. "You're my sponsor. Of course I need you. And given current events, you need us." It's hard to pin down what event she's talking about exactly, but since Tony still has his Mark 70 armor, it's probably the blowing up of his brownstone in IIM #1.
From there, she also asks Thor so that he can be the powerhouse, then T'Challa, "the most dangerous man alive". He's apparently not on great terms with the Avengers due to some previous event involving sleeper cells and kill-switch protocols, and he's not king or even officially the Black Panther anymore. Still, he's smart - "not the same way that Tony's smart", but rather canny, and in the end, he's still an Avenger. "Come home," she tells him.

Then she finds Steve and Sam training with each other in the Lower East Side. They all have a chuckle as they call each other "Cap". Then Carol asks if Sam will join the team, because they need a normal person instead of only stacking the team full of unusual people, and Sam is the closest thing there is to that. He accepts. Steve seems fine with this, and we know he'll go on to lead the Uncanny Avengers soon, so all is well.
Finally, she asks Vision, who is brooding a bit after the events of Judgment Day (no idea what that is), and Wanda, who preemptively accepts, calling the Avengers the one point of stability in her entire life, aw. And that rounds out the team!

berry red = hunting dogs/disguise
red = hunting dog past/revenge
green = mafia/actualized self identity
- the green actually has his usual color palette because the mafia is where he feels himself, someone separated from a grieving younger brother seeking to avenge his older brother
- i meant to add color to the red side too But i have discovered that this red was too dark for any colors to sit on top. so instead it's only shaded, it's the righteous younger brother in him who wants bloody payback for the angel who took his brother in the war
- the uncolored hunting dog uniform and saber are there for visual contrast, but can also mean that he no longer sees himself a hunting dog, also also i thought it'd be fun to try what harukawa does (considering the negative space created by the colored areas)
- the cape drapes like that bc i got inspired by the tachihara vol cover
he was freed when he determines his side as mafia, a side who believes in the agency's innocence; he looks distraught because the commander who gave him purpose betrayed him
this is honestly my most favorite piece so far! i hope to create more experimental pieces like this 🙇

It's probably pretty obvious which comics are the most important to read (both YA runs, all the Hawkeye solos, etc) so I wanted to mention some of my favorites you might be tempted to overlook
-Winter Soldier: Winter Kills oneshot. Kate and the YA meet Bucky.
-Civil War Fallen Son: Death of Captain America #3. Clint and Kate's first meeting.
-Hawkeye vs Deadpool #1-4. I love this title so much. Kate and Clint team up with Deadpool for the first but not last time.
-Despicable Deadpool #299. That time Deadpool threatens the Hawkeyes and Kate says he wouldn't shoot her and he agrees that he wouldn't, he'd just shoot Clint twice.
And for MCU Kate fans, shoutout to Black Widow vol 8 #10 for being the only (...so far as I know) comic to place Yelena and Kate are in the same room.

Avengers Vol 9 #1, part 2 of 2. A week after Carol is voted to be their new chairperson, they fight their first threat, something called Terminus. It's attacking some sort of artificial black hole reactor tech run by Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S., looking for power.

Sam comments on electromagnetic flux, courtesy of birds. Tony learns something new. This is super duper important (to me, a lover of birds).
Anyway, Terminus has damaged the black hole reactor thing, which means that a black hole is now liable to eat everything up at any second now. Their only hope is for Wanda to contain it, but the magnetic fields generated by the facility are interrupting her magic. As the others keep Terminus busy, Carol picks up the reactor and flies it up into the sky so that Wanda can do her thing. Unfortunately, things go boom just as Wanda casts her spell, and the next thing Carol knows, she's in the middle of nowhen and nowhere, facing down an unmasked and bloody Kang the Conqueror, who tells her he has a warning for her.

Hank's first girlfriend, as revealed in X-Men Unlimited vol. 1 #10, was called Mindy! A short lived fling during high school, she was sadly killed by Dark Beast during his infiltration of Hank's life. Jennifer Nyles was Hank's second girlfriend, who he was with when he was first recruited to the X-Men, and who had her memory of Hank wiped by Charles Xavier. Vera was Hank's third girlfriend, whom he met at Coffee-A-Go-Go! during the original 60s run of Uncanny X-Men.
Hank's fur was originally what colour?
A slightly unfair question, because I believe the original intention was for Hank's fur to come out black, but due to printing and colour limitations of the time, it actually came out grey, which is what modern recolours of the initial issues of Hank's first mutation have run with. It later turned blue towards the end of Hank's run on Amazing Adventures.
Which of these organisations is Hank NOT an official member of?
Hank has, in fact, been a member of the Illuminati (New Avengers vol. 3), the Britney Spears Fan Club (Wolverine), and the Stark Industries Board of Shareholders (Astonishing X-Men). Despite having two longtime friends and teammates on the Champions, as well as making a cameo in that title, he is not an official member of the team.
What is the universe designation for the world that Dark Beast comes from?
The Age of Apocalypse where Dark Beast comes from has been designated as Earth-295 in retrospect. Earth-1610 is the original Ultimate Universe, Earth-616 is the mainline Marvel comics universe, Earth-199999 is the MCU designation, Earth-63 is a world where all mutants are of African descent, and Earth-42 is where Miles Morales ends up at the end of the second Spider-Verse movie.

Though Hank has been friends with Jean Grey, Scott Summers, and Bobby Drake for far longer, he and Simon Williams have always identified each other as mutual best, dearest friends. While Hank's friendship with Emma Frost is very dear to me, sadly, it never got much focus after Grant Morrison stopped writing both characters.
Where does the idea that Beast likes Twinkies so much come from?
Though Marvel has had a long standing advertising and promotional arrangement with Hostess, the idea that Beast likes Twinkies to an unhealthy amount comes from an issue of X-Men from the late 1990s, where he posts up his New Year's Resolutions, which include curing the Legacy Virus, reading more 12th century texts, and eating less Twinkies.
Which type of animal did Hank once claim that his mother was allergic to so he was never allowed to have one as a child?
When Hank first acquired his puppy Sassafras, he claimed that he saw her in the window of a pet shop while out jogging and couldn't say no to her, stating that his mother had never allowed him to have a dog as a child because she was allergic. Precisely where Sassafras went after the events of New Defenders is, unfortunately, unknown.

Hank has, in fact, been shown to enjoy listening to the Rolling Stones (Generation X), Oingo-Boingo (Multiple Man), Frank Sinatra (Uncanny X-Men), and Devo (Astonishing X-Men). Though he has not yet been shown to have listened to Taylor Swift, it isn't out of the question, given his apparent appreciation for Britney Spears.
When did Beast first meet the new team of X-Men (Wolverine Colossus Nightcrawler Storm etc)?
Beast makes an appearance in Uncanny X-Men #111 (1978) investigating the seeming disappearance of the new generation of X-Men, and when he finds them trapped in Mesmero's circus, he makes numerous references to not knowing them well enough to say whether or not the people he's seeing are them or not, indicating that he hasn't yet met them. It's only when he sees Scott and Jean that he realises it's definitely the X-Men.
Who was Beast's first successful brain surgery performed on?
When Rogue neutralised the Red Skull, who had had Charles Xavier's brain grafted onto his so as to claim his telepathic talents, she took him to Hank so that he could remove the Professor's brain from the Skull's. He makes the remark that he's just completed his first successful brain surgery while washing up, to which Rogue claims that it's no great loss if he was unsuccessful. Whether or not Beast had attempted unsuccessful brain surgery prior to this point is never clarified.
