If you drink, you should drink moderately. Booze is very expensive, you see, and every penny that is spent on it could be put into race car parts instead. It's for this exact reason that my ancient ancestors spent a lot of their free time figuring out how to synthesize their own alcohol at home, and giving birth to the modern-day NASCAR stock car circuit.

Like any good science experiment, the project didn't start out as an excuse to day-drink. Originally, the family story goes, they wanted to make some synthetic alcohol-based fuels to run a race car off of. And there were way too many mouldy bananas getting thrown out at the grocery store. Why not simply turn all that discarded banana waste into zingy, renewable meth-o-line?

The reason why not is that what actually comes out of the process is high-test banana liqueur. If that concept sounds good to you, perhaps you are a secret monkey, brainwashed into thinking you were a person all along. Check your closet to make sure there's no secret radio equipment made out of coconut shells, hair, and poop, reporting back to the Big Gorilla at the zoo to advise him of when the best time to begin the invasion is. For the rest of us, banana liqueur is, most generously, a weird novelty.

A weird novelty, that is, until prohibition. The nation's wet blankets got together, and collectively said "maybe do something other than drinking all day." And they had a point: auto-body repair bills were starting to skyrocket, what with all the whisky dings getting racked up on the expansive chrome bodywork of the time. Those ancient scolds did make a mistake, though: denying them their booze meant that a newly-sober and terrified country had to turn to race cars instead.

So, a classic capitalist story: needs (for banana-based high-octane race fuels) met haves (banana-based high-octane race fuels,) and there was immediate success. Not so. For one thing, Great-Great Grandpappy Switch was really bad at business. He much preferred to be out racing, in the process inventing new motorsports like "drifting" and "grocery-store shopping cart drifting." And for another thing, he didn't see the point in changing the label on the bottles. He had paid for those labels, goddammit, and they were going to say "Incredibly Illegal Banana Booze, Don't Let The Government See It" until he had used up the entire roll of stickers.

Eventually, his two loves did meet, in the form of a group of bootleggers who started to use their souped-up shitboxes for racing instead of just outrunning the morality police. That's a story for another family, though, as by then Great-Great Grandpappy Switch had moved on to inventing the world's first pinball machine.

Say, I didn't notice your friends come in while I was talking. If you don't mind me saying so, they sure look a whole lot like those gorillas that escaped from the zoo earlier. They want to hear about my family banana liqueur recipe, you say?

Now, here's an interesting property. You get a mid-century time capsule home- untouched since 1950 - plus a whopping 104.69 acres of land that includes a completely deteriorated private airstrip, (more like a mini airport), and a large hangar with a rotting plane inside. It's in Bryson City, North Carolina, 5bds, 3.5ba, $3.995M.

Looking at the home first, it has a classic MCM front door, and the popular pony wall planter (but this one's stone and the largest I've seen).

The living room is quite long and has a nice stone fireplace. Interesting how it's flat against the wall and outlined with picture frame molding.

This is a classic- a curved glass block wall. Woah, a lot steep stairs, though, and I don't like how they skimped on the railing posts.

Nice large dining room.

The kitchen is original- the cabinetry, linoleum on the floor, and look at the tiled walls.

Plus, there's a nice sized corner for everyday dining that looks like a sunporch.

Check it out. You don't normally see an original toilet still a'flushin'. All yellow plumbing fixtures with original gray tile.

The primary bedroom is pretty big. Do you the love the little door that opens to a storage cubby?

Huge finished basement rec room isn't used, but it has glass block windows and a big stone fireplace. There appears to be a ceiling leak issue, though.

The patio is looking a little sad. Needs some sprucing up.

The 104.69 acre property is gigantic. Here's a little picnic area by a pond.

You've got your own swamp, in case you want to have an alligator farm/petting zoo (the land is zoned for multi-use).

Your own country lanes to stroll or ride a horse.

The airstrip has potential for a drag racing strip. (The realty ad proposes other uses for the land like horses, a vintage auto dealership, but I'm proposing some cooler options.)

Look at this deteriorated setup. They really let this property go to pot. There's an idea- this could be a pot growing dispensary. Plenty parking, too.

It would cost a ton of money to repave all of this.

It's a lot of money, for a lot of land, that needs a lot of work.

This was taken against the light and the image somehow came out flared. In post, ‘auto haze removal’ was applied but the reds came out rather saturated. So reds were pulled back a tad to fix that.

Chico Forti ha scontato 24 anni di carcere in Florida e il fatto che il governo abbia ottenuto il suo rientro è un fatto positivo, nessuno sperava che morisse in una cella in America, lontano dalla famiglia. Ciò non toglie però che Chico Forti, oltre a essere un italiano tornato in Italia grazie a questo prodigioso governo, è un assassino. Ha lasciato la vittima nuda, in un boschetto, per simulare un omicidio a sfondo sessuale. Ha cercato di sfangarsela mentendo alla polizia e pure a sua moglie dicendo che non aveva mai incontrato quell’uomo per poi – di fronte a prove schiaccianti – ritrattare. Aveva un movente, non aveva un alibi, possedeva la pistola calibro 22 e sia i tabulati telefonici sia la sabbia trovata nella sua auto (che lavò accuratamente dopo l’omicidio) lo collocarono sul luogo del delitto. È stato condannato all’ergastolo, si è sempre detto vittima di un complotto della polizia, ma ha sempre negato l’autorizzazione a pubblicare il verbale del processo. A lot of radio stations have gone away in my part of the world. Corporate greedheads decided that they're just too expensive to operate, so they shut 'em down. Nobody was left to leave by then, though. DJs in distant castles were running four, maybe five "morning zoo" programs at once. Harried technicians were on contract. The offices sat empty, unlocked, and available.

The first inkling we received that something had gone wrong was an ill-advised radio broadcast. Across the city, a bunch of auto-tuning FM radio receivers trying to avoid commercials latched onto the old, dead frequency, now very much alive. Alive with what? Alive with the sound of the microphone on a local DJ's vacant desk, left open to the elements while a magpie and a seagull fought over the decades-old remnants of the sandwich he was eating at the precise moment he was fired.

Somehow, through some trick of giga-corporate ultra-consolidation, they had simply forgotten to sell the offices to someone else. Maybe there was no one else who wanted a radio station. Soon, a community of weirds developed around the area. At first, it was just the usual kinds: poets, beatniks, scooter enthusiasts: people used to scuffles with the law and with, at best, a wilfully incomplete understanding of the law. We waited for them to get arrested, but it never came.

The cops didn't care. No corporation was screaming at them that their rights were being violated. The newspaper that would have bullied the Chief was part of the sweep of radio stations that died. More people followed into this great communal experiment, self-organizing themselves into a replica of the ancient radio schedules. Call-in shows. Top-40 pop music. Long discussions into the night about which recreational substances should be legalized. It was glorious, but then it ended.

Turns out that Uncle Ted's Copper Theft Hour got one of its guests a little bit too worked up, and he decided to do a live demonstration right in the studio. The transmitter was down for two weeks, until someone could steal enough metal from Home Depot and an overturned self-driving drycleaning van to bring it back to life. By then, though, the passion had gone out of it. All the weirds, now unable to force their opinions on others without response, had scattered to the four winds, starting lawn care businesses and mimeographing crank newsletters at the public library.

It was the end of an era, but I don't regret anything about it. I got like seven dollars in wire out of that place, which was enough to buy a working stereo from the Pick N Pull so I could listen to the show.

Me: oh, like... bread??

Son: and then the other animals go into the zoo to get the food. While they breed.

Son: okay! I'll build that.
