"Madame Delait pruning roses"
She was a French bearded lady from Thaon-les-Vosges, Lorraine region of eastern France. She run a local pub with her husband in the town and used to shave regularly until 1900.
In 1901, she visited the carnival of Nancy with her husband and saw a bearded woman there. Upon returning to the town, one of the regulars in the pub offered her 500 Francs (roughly 5k USD in today's money) if she let her beard grow. Even though she never get the money, she kept the beard and renamed the pub to Le Café de La Femme à Barbe, "The café of the Bearded Woman".
She became a kind of celebrity, by selling postcards and photographs (in relatively feminine settings at the beginning, later she even got a special permission from the authorities to wear men's clothes at her leisure, which was illegal at the time). She also toured in Europe and became even more famous during WW1 when she joined the Red-Cross and became the mascot of the Poilu (French infantrymen with lower class background).
French vintage postcard, mailed in 1937 to Paris

The real difference between British and American Edwardian-era light fiction is that American stories have college girls. The British ones have girls who went to boarding school together, but it's a different vibe. The boarding school vibe is more juvenille--our parents sent us here, we've got to sneak around under the watchful eyes of our teachers, etc.--while the college girls chose to take their education to a higher level, and there's more of a sense that they have to use it out in the world. There's more energy to it. I don't know. It's just a thing.
#someone needs to take gutenberg away from me#i stumbled on another obscure fluffy romance author#i can't overemphasize how fluffy and generic this is#but also the american-ness gives it a very different flavor#main girl gets a visit from her college friends and there's just so much more energy and independence#than you'd see in british fiction from the same era#and i realized it's a pattern#i'd never consciously considered how far ahead america was in the realm of female education#dorothy l. sayers looking on in envy#books#history is awesome

Ganondorf discovers his greatest enemy
Ganondorf took a sleepy breath as he shifted a little to get more comfortable. Link had been groggy at best and downright unresponsive at worst, but the healer had said it was likely due to the amount of blood he’d lost and the medicine Ganondorf had been instructed to give him. In either case, it delayed the inevitable conversations that would come, that had to come. Ganondorf would gladly take this time to just hold the sweet boy and not think about how much pain and potential hatred Link held for him, because of him.
The look in the boy’s face when he’d turned to see Ganondorf, neck pouring blood like a faucet, eyes terrified, had yet to be wiped from the Gerudo’s mind.
He really didn’t want to address any of it. It was a cowardly sentiment, and he despised that he felt it, but for just a little while longer, all he wanted was to hold Link and protect him from everything, including himself.
Link sniffled sleepily, tucked between Ganondorf’s arm and his chest. He’d hardly moved, and the peaceful look on his face quieted the anxieties in his guardian’s mind.
The door to the bedroom opened slowly, catching Ganondorf’s attention. He saw his other child of destiny peeking in, green hat missing from his golden head. He must have been out riding, given how his usually perfectly quaffed hair was windswept and messy.
“How’s he doing?” the captain asked, approaching with soft footsteps.
“He’s sleeping well, at least,” Ganondorf answered. The little king in his arm scrunched his nose a bit at the sound before rubbing his cheek further into Ganondorf’s tunic to get comfortable.
The elder Link hummed thoughtfully, observing his predecessor, before holding out a booklet. “I found this in the market. It’s quite popular among the—well, it was recommended to me for someone who might be homebound caring for family. Good way to pass the time and all.”
Ganondorf looked at the booklet curiously. He wasn’t much of a reader, honestly, but he supposed he could be kept entertained for a little while. He could just leave the captain to watch the younger Link, but he didn’t want to let the child go.
Child. He’s far from that. But he really wasn’t. Not in Ganondorf’s mind, at least. In either case, he didn’t want to leave him, so this would be a nice distraction while the younger one slept.
When Ganondorf glanced at the booklet, his eyes widened a little. He glanced at the captain. “The Secrets of the Imprisoning War? Who would have such information?”
Link just smiled sweetly. “I heard it’s an engaging read. Perhaps there are some truths in there that even you do not know, old man.”
Ganondorf squinted. There was something mischievous in that smile. He knew this boy well enough by now, loved him and cherished him and simultaneously wanted to knock his head into a wall. While his younger hero was quiet and seemingly passive off the battlefield, his older one was brazen, charismatic, and cheeky. The captain could be as cold as ice and serious when he needed to be, but when he didn’t…
He’d give him the benefit of the doubt. For now. “We’ll see.”
The older hero nodded a little, opening the curtains a bit more so there was better lighting on the bed. The room in which they were staying was a large one with a balcony, so perhaps Ganondorf could just carry his charge outside and they could relax and read there. He’d just stay here for now - it was only late morning. He opened the booklet and began reading.
The Imprisoning War: An epic time in Hyrule’s history, from ages so long past that scarcely a fact is known about it, filled to the brim with fantastical legends that all come to the same conclusion: the Hero victorious, evil banished away for the rest of eternity, a primordial curse shattered into pieces. But what do we know of the players in this epic quest? What if their struggles, their losses, their secrets and loves? This is their story, ranging from the Hero’s steamy relationship with the Sacred Diplomat to the secret love life of the incarnation of evil himself.
Ganondorf choked on his spit. The—the secret—WHAT?
What did that boy—what was—
Din’s Fire this was—now he had to read it to figure out what the hell this was all about!
Naturally, Captain Link was still lingering outside the room with his friend, cackling when the former terror of Hyrule exclaimed, “I DID NOT HAVE AN AFFAIR WITH A—WHO WROTE THIS??”
“Okay, okay, wait,” Lana wheezed. “Do you think he got to the part where he had a steamy moment with the dragon queen or was it the unsuspecting perfectly beautiful peasant woman?”
“With that much insult in his tone? Definitely the peasant,” the captain answered between laughs.
“I CAN HEAR YOU TWO!”
With that singular warning, Lana and Link fled the area, breathless with amusement.

Maybe I’m stupid (likely) but I feel like Gojo resembling Toji in his battle with Megumi!Sukuna is trying to show that he is a paternal figure in Megumi’s life. Like the two different sides of Megumi’s male paternal figures (or I guess the two most consistent male adult figures in Megumi’s life)??? I don’t buy that Gojo was a father figure for Tsumiki and Megumi (to me he was more like Spencer from ICarly lmao) but like…i feel like the outfit similarity is trying to say something about their relationship on a familial or paternal scale…but im too dumb to fully phrase this how i want so maybe just ponder on this for me hahaha
#this doesn’t make sense lol I’m just confused#I can read so many books and get the subtext and all that#but there’s so many conflicting things about jjk due to translation error or whatever#so I’m like…maybe I’m over thinking this???#im a Megumi thinks of Gojo as family and vice versa truther though so im biased#but since im catching up on everything i ended up seeing discourse around the dadjo takes#and this question popped into my mind lol#anyway thank you for coming to my ted talk#jujutsu kaisen#jujutsu gojo#gojo satoru#toji fushiguro#megumi fushiguro#jjk#ok and to clarify I don’t mean paternal as in dad#I mean it like Gojo was a consistent adult figure for those children#they would naturally defer to him as a paternal figure after enough exposure#cause I see things saying Tsumiki raised him which yeah she did#but to say Gojo wasn’t present as an adult authority figure is wrong imo#it was a mix of Tsumiki raising him day to day and Gojo making regular visits I think idk translation gets a little weird there#but yeah paternal =\= dad Gojo is what I’m trying to say

sometimes i think about daigo interacting with the mundane and thinking about mine and i throw up a little bit ngl
#snap chats#yk what i mean. By Design the first thought that should come to mind with mine is money and expensive things#but instead of seeing expensive watches or flashy cars and thinking of mine i hope daigo thinks about how he liked his coffee#maybe daigo sees an interesting piece of art and wonders what mine wouldve thought of it#maybe daigo tries to read a little more on his downtime- what if mine always had a book on his desk when he'd visit#does daigo listen to classical music more nowadays ? maybe he stares at pianos a little too long now when he spots them#just. remembering the human aspects of mine instead of him being just a piggy bank#it's easy to do when he was/is also in a position where he was only valued for his money or authority/relation to authority#he's haunted! allegedly. in my opinion. haunted by anything and everything that reminds him of him#theres a time and place to be haunted but work hours is not it. until a mfer come into your room and be like#'lol remember that clan.that went under after its patriarch killed himself' and then you have fight the demons not to kill someone#anyway. im gonna sit on a fic of this for nine years while i work good bye everyone#i love it when daigos haunted its so rude#i try not to imagine daigo as solely a grieving widow for until the end of time. however he can have his moments#i think he's allowed to be melancholy about losing his ''''''''best friend''''''' sometimes

Dude, I NEED to know your opinion on the scene in War Storm where Maven is captured and in Montfort, and is about to be interrogated and tortured by Tyton. Like. His entire reaction is just so heartbreaking and it lives in my head rent free every day. I mean, who else could have hurt him in that way but his mother?? And then the line, “I try not to think of Maven. His words. What his life was and continues to be.”
LIKE OMFG WHAT. VICTORIA YOURE KILLING ME 😭🤌
And he still loved her and was BURIED NEXT TO HER ??? Ugh. I can’t. My goodness this character is so deliciously tragic and I just want to give him the biggest hug and also the biggest slap in the face 💀
no because the scene where maven is captured MAKES ME INSANE.
the way he literally just starts acting ballistic is wild to me. I mean talking to himself (which clearly looks like he's talking to elara EVEN THOUGH SHES DEAD) the manic smiling??? HELLO
and yes the interrogation scene was so sad
"You think I haven't done it a thousand times?" Makes me wonder what he says to himself. What lies to tells himself. What lies and truths does he mix up. Does he even know his own lies and truths?? It's like he's completely losing his sense of self.
and him wanting to be buried next to his mother is disgusting and beautiful all at once.
that woman was vile and cruel to him, but she was still his mother. and he loved her regardless. because in a way, I can imagine the lies she fed him as a child and how they became his truths.
it's so heartbreaking UGH he makes me sick
#maven calore they could never make me hate you#his aura is unmatched ngl#i eonder whatever happened to his body#because cal visiting an empty grave is also sickening#victoria aveyard#booklr#authors#books & libraries#bookworm#mare barrow#maven calore#ren💌maven#war storm#red queen#glass sword#broken throne#kings cage#cal calore#elara merandus

Leaving Cards - Cards never to be sent by post; ladies leave cards in person.
All visiting cards must be left in person as a matter of course; they should never be sent by post: it would be a great breach of etiquette to do so under any circumstances. Under certain circumstances a servant might be allowed to leave them for his mistress, but this is not often done; "distance," "unfavourable weather," "pressing engagements," or "delicate health," would be perhaps sufficient and good reasons for sending cards by a servant; but, as a rule, ladies invariably leave their cards themselves. It was formerly the custom, on arriving in town, for ladies with a large acquaintance to send their visiting cards to their various friends and acquaintances by a footman; but this practice is now more unusual than usual, it being found more satisfactory for the lady herself to perform this duty.

so like if you have a baby bailey tries to take them to the orphanage no matter what right? what do you think kylar is gonna do. how will he react when you have his baby and bailey tries to take it
screeches at the top of his lungs if he's there to see it. you know this man is holding your hand while you give birth (he definitely cries with you, does not look at the doctor when they're speaking to him, he's waaaayy too focused on you because this might just be the most important thing that has ever happened in his life.) so when that cranky old asshole snatches your baby from you he's fighting like a rabid dog—gets even worse if you try to soothe him or assure him that bailey means well—your precious baby shouldn't be tainted by the hands of that asshole!
idk. i really hope vrel can let the baby stay in kylar's manor like with alex on the farm. like. surely kylar's parents would love their first grandchild... lotta potential for an event where pc catches one of kylar's parents looming over the side of the manger cooing at their grandchild. like. CMON!!!! make the monster parents loveable pls. i want them to like me :( pls guys i literally want to marry your son :( pls like me even a little bit
but yeah. kylar would be furious. idk if he'd pull a knife in a hospital though, probably didn't bring it with him because even though he knows the doctor is just doing their job he does get a little jealous at their position between your thighs... yeah. he's THAT cringe.
#hatkuuasks#my new years resolution is to write longer fanfiction guys#i would like to write a kylar ao3 fic with like 10 (?) chapters but i feel like i could never create a premise cool enough to do that aaaua#idk. one fic i really idolise right now is 'socialization (and bring on all the pretenders) < its really good. also the author said they—#—visit my blog sometimes so PLEASE reveal yourself i need to know how your brain functions you genius#< also it's a kylar fic. he's written so well and i just. i just love that they gave him big brown eyes. THAT'S SOOOO REAL BECAUSE THEY'd—#—TOTALLY GET ALL HONEYED UP FOR YOU AND ADNA DN#um. yeah. pls.plsplsplspls anoned. tell me who you are so we can be mutuals.

Getting an adulthood diagnosis for something that's been present since early childhood is sooooo fucking 👁️👁️ there's catharsis sure yeah but the struggle comes from trying to forgive your child self for failures you weren't really having.
Anyway shout out to my autoimmune girlies. Who else got shamed for early childhood cavities and expensive adolescent surgeries only to find out as an adult you are full of mouth-ruining antibodies lol. Girlies who else is unpacking their "chronic illness bad teeth = shameful moral failing" buuuullshit? Anyway I'm still trying to save $16,000 to fix fucked teeth I thought I brought on myself, but only discovered in 2023 were due to medical study candidate levels of sjogrens antibodies and severely medically mismanaged sle 🤪
#Creepy chatter#The thing about finally getting to a doctor that immediately knows what is going on is like#Lol they rapidly answer so many questions + fix so many problems that it takes awhile to register what the fuck happened to you previously#Vanderbilt diagnosing me correctly in one visit was insane but the rest of the things they discovered very quickly after???#That should have been patently obvious to previous doctors??#They screened me for a brain fog study bc my age and dxes are so unusual to the rest of their sample pop#I turned down another study not too long ago since they were studying a sjogrens sx I don't have but?#So wild to have a medical authority definitively dx + treat me + have serious interest in studying my conditions further#That imposter syndrome gets. Nervous.#Either I'm a genius who has duped one of the leading medical research universities or perhaps I am actually ill for not attention#Medical cw
