New MOVEit transfer vulnerabilities that require patching (2024) - CyberTalk

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Remember last year’s MOVEit meltdown? Get ready for a reprise…

For anyone who missed last year’s madness, MOVEit Transfer is a popular managed file transfer product sold by Progress Software, which provides business applications and services to more than 100,000 organizations globally.

In 2023, the software code for the MOVEit Transfer product was found to contain multiple vulnerabilities, leading to a rash of ransomware attacks, and data exposure for thousands of organizations.

The level of business exploitation was so severe that it impacted the results of this year’s “Data Breach Investigations Report” (DBIR) from Verizon.

Earlier this month, Progress Software contacted users about two high-severity vulnerabilities, CVE-2024-5805 and CVE-2024-5806. Both are categorized as authentication bypass-style vulnerabilities. Each one has been assigned a 9.1 severity score.

To allow adequate time for patching, the information was under embargo until June 25th. This appears to have been a wise move, as just hours after being made public, at least one vulnerability is seeing active exploit attempts in the wild.

The Shadowserver Foundation has detected exploitation efforts that hone in on honeypot systems, in particular.

The new bugs

“To be clear, these vulnerabilities are not related to the zero-day MOVEit Transfer vulnerability we reported in May 2023,” said a Progress Software spokesperson.

CVE-2024-5806 is an improper authentication vulnerability in MOVEit’s SFTP module, which can potentially lead to authentication bypass in some instances.

Cyber security researchers have noted that this CVE could be weaponized to “impersonate any user on the server.”

CVE-2024-5805 is another SFTP-associated authentication bypass vulnerability, which affects MOVEit Gateway version 2024.0.0.

Action items

As a cyber security leader, have your team check on whether or not your MOVEit Transfer software is up-to-date. Patches are available for all vulnerabilities.

Communicate to your team that these vulnerabilities are a priority, as they have serious business implications. If patching hasn’t yet been completed, emphasize the importance of patching quickly. After patching, confirm successful implementation.

Additional considerations

Reassess your organization’s vulnerability to ransomware attacks. Take a layered approach to cyber security and consider additional cyber security measures. You might want to invest in proactive processes like vulnerability assessments and red teaming. In addition, review and update your incident response plan, as to address potential MOVEit Transfer exploitation attempts. Further information

after your panel concluded, hobie found himself searching for you in the crowd of spectators. he eventually found you holding a bouquet of flowers from the moderator as you put away your things. he casually made his way to you, slipping through the ocean of bodies before standing behind you.

"would've gotten flowers if i had known someone as smart as you would be presenting here. however, i doubt i'd be able to find anything as beautiful as you, ms. america," he charmed, immediately gaining your attention as you turned to him.

"i take it that you liked my presentation," you mused, smiling up at the man before you.

your cheeks stung from how wide you smiled as you punched your number into his phone, telling him to text you the details.

you guys hit it off as your personalities, morals, and routines meshed almost perfectly. you finished your educational responsibilities around the same time he finished his internship, leaving the two of you with enough time to see each other at least three times a week, excluding your weekend.

he's so attentive as he remembers everything about you, including things that you mentioned offhandedly. you'll expect him to pay it no mind until he says or does something that showed you that he was in fact listening to your every word.

and he's so soft with you. underneath your boyfriend's unapproachable persona was a man who was putty in your hands. he melts into your embrace, hands gently cupping your face as he laid a breathless kiss on your lips. he was always touching you when he was in your presence. he usually opted for the casual arm hooked across your front as he rested his chin on your shoulder. it was the perfect height for you to whisper all of your jokes into his ear, ensuring that he didn't miss the chance to indulge in your humor.

you actually guessed that he was the esteemed spider-punk after having rescued you from a mid-evening robbery. you noticed the stature of the hero looked familiar as you watched him swing through the air.

"what happened here?" you asked him one lazy morning, pointing to the bruise forming on his shoulder.

"i slipped in the shower," he mumbled, pulling you closer to him as he tried to go back to sleep.

"are you sure it had nothing to do with that pole the news showed you being flung into?" you mused.

"how'd you figure?" he asked, eyes now open as he looked down at you with a tired grin.

"what kind of girlfriend would i be if i didn't know my boyfriend when i saw him?" you replied, planting a kiss on the corner of his mouth. "plus i’ve tripped over your beat up sneakers enough times to recognize them."

"sneakers," he said, copying your accent. he let out an amused gruff after you painlessly slapped his arm. "you're such an american."

he made the effort to join you for your public demonstrations, only stepping in when someone got mouthed off at you too much for his liking, knowing that you could hold your own but preferring if you didn't have to. he read all of your favorite books as well as any pieces that you mentioned to him. he participates in most of your hobbies, even picking up a few and calling them his own.

he even calls your mom, asking her how she had been since the last time he had the chance to ask. she was more excited to see him the first time you visited since meeting him. she tried to treat him as a guest, but he was set on helping her around the house, taking care of any odd problems she had.

you might just have to marry him if he keeps this shit up.

They were bleeding you dry, keeping you disempowered, until you reached a big mental shift and energetic upgrade (could be peaking this month!) Finally you are coming out of the cold (this pile is the only one where the flowers are in the snow - coincidence? I think not). You are choosing yourself. You are realizing that you are worth more. You are worth reciprocal energy exchanges. You are worth receiving as well as giving. You are worth the Sun being shone on YOU instead of the other way around all of the time. Yes, babe! In the deck that I’m using, even your upright Ace of Swords is showing a hand dropping the sword. You’re not fighting anymore. You’re done making life hard. I’m getting this visual of that old Disney movie The Sword and the Stone. In all of your cards, your swords and your wands are pointing down, they’re falling. I’m seeing them fall into the stone from that movie. And then you come along, with all of your innate intuitive power, and pull them out. You are making what hurt you, now *work* for you. You better get it, fam. Side note: when I looked up that movie, the year really called out to me. It was made in 1963, and when I look up the angel number 1963 online it says “Angel Number 1963 asks you to trust and believe that you will always have plenty to care for yourself and your loved ones. Know that you are able to confidently serve your life purpose and soul mission with your wants and needs being met along the way. The angels and Universal Energies will ensure that your material needs are always met in Divine right time. Trust that the Universe provides all.” [Sacred Scribes blogspot] Which brings me to the energy of the Strength card. On my deck, strength is represented by the bull. Very much like a Taurus. You may have a Taurus Mars {the planet of action and doing) or you may have a lot of Taurus or fixed energy in your birth chart. Either way, this is telling me that everything is going at the pace in which it should. Divine timing is at play right now. I’m feeling like some of you may have been feeling frustrated by how long this “healing journey” has been going on for you. Peep what the oracle messages had for you “everything will reveal itself in time”.

NEW EARTHSHOT PROGRAMMES!

As the 2024 Earthshot Week kicks off in Cape Town today, the Earthshot Prize has announced a series of programmes designed to inspire and engage the next generation of climate innovators.

Global Network of Accelerators

The new global network, with 17 initial members, will foster collaboration between accelerators, incubators and other organisations around the world as they support early-stage start-ups to tackle the most pressing environmental challenges facing the world, and to speed their solutions to scale.

The network will expand over time to provide even greater support to eco-innovators and their solutions.

Climate Youth Leadership Programme

The Prize has brought together 120 young people from across Africa and Asia to launch the first Earthshot Week Climate Youth Leadership Programme. This cohort, all passionate about driving transformative change in climate action and sustainability, will develop vital skills in authentic leadership, storytelling, and networking over four impactful days.

The attendees will participate in a series of immersive masterclasses, programmes, and experiences, including with Finalists and Earthshot Prize alumni, & there will also be opportunities to potentially secure internships, jobs, and important connections to potential mentors, business partners, and investors throughout the week.

Project Slingshot

In an ongoing collaboration with the National Geographic Society, The Earthshot Prize will connect with young people ages 13-18 with a youth program which aims to foster and support a new generation of leaders committed to addressing environmental challenges.

During Earthshot Week, this will be brought to life through an interactive workshop with 100 local high school youth, led by National Geographic in collaboration with The Earthshot Prize and Brand South Africa.

"From Pet to Threat" - This just happened to me AGAIN and after 10+ years in this biz, I’m sick of having to get over it in silence for fear of being blacklisted, or labeled as “difficult to work with” because I chose to be open about my working experience. I won’t go into details, as this isn’t meant to be that kind of post, but I want to share this research because the “Pet to Threat" phenomena keeps happening to me and so many of my peers, particularly over the last few years here in LA. It’s truly an abusive cycle that repeats for far too many people in the workplace, but especially and aggressively for Black women in the entertainment/media industry. So many of us work extremely hard from a place of love, peace and genuine passion for our crafts. We choose to put our prowess out there, hoping that it’ll be reciprocated with that same authenticity by our leadership/mentors/peers, only to be undermined and vehemently devalued in favor of this insistence for power and control at every turn. I’ll never understand the need to prioritize pettiness & ego over doing the right thing for another team member or putting the best, most collaborative work out there for your company. What’s the point of hiring an expert or someone with big potential, just to diminish them? I'm tired of entering spaces I was promised were full of golden potential and stability, only to have to abruptly leave that space a short while later, lest endure unsafe + toxic working dynamics if I choose to brave it. The feelings of shame, guilt and confusion that come after are all too familiar, and yet they never get any easier to deal with. Constantly being in an anxious place of trying to figure out what went wrong and changing my approach, while the world you left couldn’t even be bothered to think twice about you, feels like a losing game. Why even play anymore? I'm only left jobless with no prospects, broke, and burdened with heavy feelings of sadness that I feel really dumb for having. Because it’s just a job, right? And the house always wins.

Some of you might question why even share all of this. Well, I fully believe transparency is one of the best ways to educate and inspire those around you. By sharing this article and a bit about my experience, I hope others feel encouraged to choose themselves and stop letting lazy business practices suppress their potential. I have no idea what’s next for me - this post has probably tanked any chance of me continuing a career in entertainment marketing. But what I do know is that I’m not accepting being overlooked anymore. Not having my true potential nurtured or recognized because the mentors I believed in would rather act out of insecurity than help me thrive is total BS. I deserve better than that, and so do you. I hope today is the day you know your worth."

Practicing Authentic Leadership in Daily Life

Developing authentic leadership involves actively thinking about your decisions, and living by your values in everyday situations. It means that you practice empathy and listen to what is being said – both the words and the underlying messages – instead of assuming you already know the answers.

Authentic leadership also requires a good deal of self-awareness and honesty. To truly lead authentically, you must be aware of how you think and feel about yourself as well as how your decisions will affect your team or organization.

Building genuine trust with an authentic leadership style also entails being true to yourself and others. This involves being consistent in words and actions, providing constructive feedback, and actively engaging with those around you. Here are a few tips for practicing authentic leadership in daily life:

Take responsibility for your actions – both positive and negative – without making excuses or blaming others.

Display empathy by listening to people’s thoughts, feelings, concerns, ideas, etc., without giving unsolicited advice or making judgments.

Practice self-reflection to gain insight into your own behavior, values, motivations, biases, etc., so that you can better understand why you make certain decisions or take certain actions.

Be transparent about your intentions – especially when introducing new ideas or changes – so that everyone has a better understanding of what is expected from them.

Show respect for everyone involved regardless of position or role within an organization by consistently treating them with dignity and fairness throughout all interactions.

By following these tips for developing genuine trust with an authentic leadership style, you can create an effective team culture where open dialog is encouraged and ideas are valued at every level of the organization .
