So, Shen Jiu being reborn as an air nomad! Let him have his well deserved peace!! Oh look, it’s a loving community that doesn’t have any hierarchies or power issues to fuck him over, and air being the element of freedom?? Fuck yes.

Ideally, Shen Jiu would be reborn during Yangchen or Kyoshi’s time, coz I still need the air nomads to be, yknow, around. 

The air nomads lowkey act like a sect that practices aesthetic cultivation ( they reminds me of the Lan Clan too).

They work hard and are always studying philosophy and spirituality to seek enlightenment. Since they don’t hire people to do things, they do everything in their community themselves and depend on each other. Who knows, it could be therapeutic, and it’s not like Shen Jiu’s afraid to work hard. I think he would enjoy reading up on stuff about this new world he's in and there's access to so much knowledge and information in the air temples. He’d like travelling around to all of them. And a sky bison!!! He gets to have a fluffy sky bison of his own!! When it’s bonding day, he obviously doesn’t think any sky bison would want to choose him. Ofc he would make a terrible companion. Even great beasts are motivated by self interest, and he’d simply be a poor choice- 

Then, he sees one that’s nudging her head on his arm. She strayed away from the rest of the herd and the other kids and wandered over to the lone boy sitting by himself, who was too busy feeling sorry for his life to even notice her approaching him. He felt a tug on his soul and knew he had been picked and there was no changing that. 

Shen Jiu named her Xiyue, which means joy. Shen Jiu with a sky bison Shen Jiu with a sky bison Shen Jiu with a sky bison-

The air temples are segregated by gender, the monks live in the northern and southern air temples, and the nuns live in the eastern and western temples. Ofc all of them are traveling to wherever and staying in other temples for certain periods of time tho. Shen Jiu was originally from the northern temple but got relocated pretty quickly to the western one with his guardian once his aversion/fear of men became pretty apparent. They don’t understand just why another person who’s not the avatar has memories of a past life but they’ll make sure one of their own is cared for regardless. So now he gets to be surrounded by people who are mostly not men, and not a single person is around to judge him for it. He does go back to visit his home temple, and stays there when he’s older because he's learnt that the air temples are practically the safest of places. Pre-Sozin at least lol. I’m leaning towards this being Yangchen's time. She’s an air avatar from the western air temple and she’s unique for an avatar in the sense that she also remembers her past life. Or ten thousand of them in Yangchen’s case. 

She’ll sometimes have past avatars outright possess her and start talking or doing things as if they’re still alive. The people who know about Yangchen think it’s a gift, because she’s got the easiest access to her past lives. Lol. As if. Yangchen’s out here living through the trauma and grief of so many of her lives in the worst moments possible. The first time she went into the spirit realm, everything went to shit because one of her past lives had an intense fear of spirits and Yangchen started having an episode while the spirits were attacking her. She was with her sister, and ended up losing her on that trip :( And there was this other time, one of her past lives straight up tried to convince her to give up on humanity altogether during another episode. This was exactly what he said;

“They take with both hands, and they pay only with blame. They find your edges and then they dwell there. Work a hundred miracles? You’re worthless for not performing a hundred and one… Human beings choose their own misery, over and over again. Tell me why humanity deserves an Avatar” 

I was thinking this scene could be a character development moment for Shen Jiu, if he tries to convince her why she shouldn't give up on humanity. This seems like the kind of thing Shen Jiu himself would believe wholeheartedly, but he already spent a whole life believing that, and it didn’t do him any favours. (Yes, Shen Jiu is part of team avatar, he's the first member actually) He and Yangchen have something to bond over lol. Miserable past lives and all that. 

Also Yangchen was shrewd. She needed to engage in clandestine operations and spywork to even hope to achieve what she needed to. Guess which former Qing Jing peak lord could've helped nudge her in that direction? 

Not to mention she also knows forbidden air bending techniques (the one that Zaheer used on the Earth Queen that sucked the air out of her lungs to kill her heh). She perfected it completely and made her own variations. It's not mentioned just how Yangchen learnt of these techniques, but I imagine here that Shen Jiu had access to many of the archives and libraries (even the forbidden ones) in the four temples bc of how much he frequents them (the airbenders just like him a lot). And Yangchen knew this and asked him in which archives she could find them too. Shen Jiu is not going to teach the avatar voidbending! As if he'd risk getting in trouble with the elders and have all his access denied bc of it! *Cue Yangchen pestering Shen Jiu about it like a spoiled younger sibling and convincing him to just tell her which scrolls to look for, or else she'll tell tell the elders that he's the one who's been practicing voidbending*

It's not like he was even against teaching voidbending, he literally took it upon himself to learn and any all forbidden techniques he could get his hands on. And it's the fucking Avatar. Who would miss out on a chance to teach the Avatar?? But getting banned from the archives, or even from one of the air temples is a real fear of his soshjigl

Honestly tho, he could totally be on Kyoshi's team too. You know Kyoshi, she'd love learning those forbidden techniques too. Heck, Shen Jiu might as well be Kyoshi's airbending master in this AU.

He would totally find Wan Shi Tong's library without even trying. Idk how long it would take for him to get kicked out tho heh.

Shen Jiu would be one of those people who can easily get into the spirit world through meditating (he had a boon from having learnt cultivation in a xianxia world, that's why it would be easy for him). But since the spirit world reflects your emotions like a dream realm, Shen Jiu is not having a good time there. 

I think he'd be insanely good at metalbending if he was an earthbender further along the timeline instead. The first time we see Shen Jiu do any form of cultivation was literally him reshaping metal into a blade! Lowkey feel like drawing him in the Zaofu metalbending uniform too. He'd look good in those dfdggfdf

Remember when I said he's going to live a peaceful life? I lied. Guess what demonic tyrant's getting reborn as a waterbender? Yuh Luo Bingge's here too.

He picks up on bloodbending way too easily, and learns how to take away bending too, coz you can do that with bloodbending apparently! (Freakin Amon over here) And the moment he gets 'reacquainted' with Shen Jiu, Luo Bingge's gonna give him more shit to have nightmares over.

And he will take away Shen Jiu's bending too. And while I believe in Shen Jiu living a life of respite after going through the entirety of PIDW, it's even more fun to torture him again after he's got a brief taste of freedom.

He's a very warm and loving, upbeat guy so I made him fire nation, but I could also see him as a water tribe healer (may have to draw that sometime) (we'll see)

Crossover AU's I'll never write (watch as this one is the one that forces me back into Longfic) but I like playing around with: Zuko In Westeros.

Set after S1, a little after Cave of Lovers in atla, well before Jon Arryn's death in Westeros. You know he has to run into Ned Stark. Ned Stark is the only high lord who wouldn't have him killed/thrown into a dungeon, if we're being honest. Yes, obviously Zuko gets a new dad - I believe strongly in giving Zuko parents, like you would give an enthusiastic dog squeaky toys even though it keeps ripping them apart and making a mess.

I thought about Tywin, but - Tywin has no regard for honor. While Tywin would be very interested in making a vassal of this foreign prince with strange powers, for Zuko it would just be terrible. It would make a brilliant psychological thriller where you're waiting for Zuko to figure out what kind of person Tywin really is, and Tywin trying to stay one step ahead, but it wouldn't have Softness, and Softness is key here. Though: the comedy potential of Robert dying and Tywin immediately announcing that Cersei will marry the foreign prince is tempting.

There's also that Northerners are more superstitious and accepting of things like "the spirits dropped me here." The North is fertile ground for multiversal travellers.

In no particular order, here's a list of uncollected thoughts:

1. I don't remember Ned's character well enough to remember if he's the sort of person who would believe that Zuko showed "shameful weakness" or that Zuko is a coward. But I think it'd take about the space of one Regular Zuko Action for him to realize that Zuko is neither weak nor a coward and that it's a miracle he's still alive.

2. Building on that: Ned does have a good grasp of the realities of court life. He has a number of ideas on the reasons a king might want his son and wife gone after grabbing power. (Zuko does not take well to theorizing.) He also notes that anyone having an affair with a royal consort would be risking their life. Almost anyone. Add to that his uncle following him into banishment? Not contesting the coup and the murder of his father? He puts two and two together and gets 22: Zuko is Iroh's illegitimate son.

3. He takes Zuko out to a vast, open, snowy field to tell him that. It's a good precaution.

4. To the Westerosi, Zuko is obviously from the uncharted West. This makes a neat bit of sense for everyone involved, except for Zuko, who has had access to the maps and education of a nation that has steam-powered ships. Zuko wisely doesn't say much about it.

5. To Zuko, it's spirits. The spirits, representing authorial whimsy I guess, literally tell Zuko "guess what kid the age rating of your surroundings is about to go up" and yeet him. They also give him the Westerosi language, because frankly I'm not nor will I likely ever be good enough to pull off a learning the language-plot. At least not well.

6. Speaking of which? The thing that made this idea rotate around in my brain endlessly? The inciting incident? I thought about the bilingual struggle of literally translating a word into English and going "wait, that's stupid." (Or the other way around. Like guys, pineapple? Seriously? Pine apple.) And then I thought about Zuko realizing that his country, full of Firebending people, has a name that literally translates to "Fire Nation."

7. Okay this is me abusing the list format, I just wanted to break up that paragraph. But my fellow bilinguals, you get it, right? The word refers to the thing. You don't have cause to interrogate it. Until you forget it in English and you have to break it down into its components and you realize that the word is stupid. It's dumb. To Zuko, the word for his nation is one word. Which happens to translate to "Fire Nation", which Zuko thinks sounds ridiculous.

8. Dragons. "My uncle killed the last dragon in single combat" is an absolutely terrible thing for a Ned to hear, having it be followed by what boils down to "which is a shame, because I always wanted to ride one" is criminal. This is also a great reason for Ned to keep Zuko under wraps: while he doesn't look anything like a Targaryen, Robert might not care. Talk of a dragonrider - even a prospective one, even a hypothetical one, even one who just idly imagined it - becomes very dangerous when the rider in question can breathe fire.

9. Zuko would like to not be married to anyone. It seems that literally everyone wants otherwise. This vexes Zuko.

10. Zuko is not aware of exactly how groundbreaking Firebending is for the people of Westeros. Zuko is also not aware of how terrifying his descriptions of a vast warlike empire with steam-powered metal ships and legions of Firebenders are. Zuko honestly isn't trying to scare anyone. He isn't!

11. Everyone who gets a chance to talk to Zuko is terrified by the end. (Varys makes a special trip to the North and has a brief but illuminating - or at least he thinks it's illuminating - conversation with Zuko while in disguise. He comes out of it deeply disturbed.)

11.5 Hopefully no priests of R'hllor see Zuko. oh, shit, too late.

12. Ned thinks that maybe his ancestors who built the Wall were Waterbenders who retreated across the polar ice caps and ended up making a kingdom in the deep, deep North. He wouldn't be opposed to visiting an ice palace.

13. Firebending can kill White Walkers.

14. For maximum Soft, the Gaang is dropped in shortly before the end. Katara and Sokka are questioned about whether they know any Starks, by Ned. Ned takes Sokka's description of wolfshead helmets as proof that they are at least distant kin. Zuko is perplexed and a little offended.

15. I am drawing a huge blank on the Stark kids. I feel like Jon and Zuko would HATE each other, though. Robb would be respectful, but distant. Bran, I feel, would be cool with him, maybe the most out of everyone. Arya would be endlessly intrigued by him, but not necessarily like Zuko as a person that much. Sansa might hate him too, which would provide interesting common ground for her and Jon. Rickon... no clue. I don't have a good grasp on Rickon.

AU where the Fire Nation fucked up the spiritual balance so badly that it made Korra look tame. The Gaang have to go to the four lion turtles and ask them to help rebalance the elements.

The "Chosen" are the benders of each element. They're kind of like their children. It's easy to see why Donnie, being the Air Spirit, is pretty salty towards humans and Aang in general. The genocide was devastating.

Mikey probably has it worse since his element is associated with so much death and destruction when it should be energy and life which is what he's all about.

Leo is game to help and would love to have done more but knows he's not allowed.

Raph just feels terrible that Aang is so young.

I didn't plan on continuing this it honestly was another excuse to draw colossal turtles.

Though I do have a funny bit I might do a little comic for.

Gosh I am so tempted to write a lil spinoff crossover between my cryptid batfam story and ATLA. Like you cannot tell me Bruce wouldn't adopt the banished fire prince if he got even the smallest of chances.

Angry traumatized vigilante child? Who gets mistaken for a spirit and creature which is this world's versions of gods and cryptids? He would snatch him up in an instant.

I love imagining swapping the protagonists of totally incompatable shows.

Aang from Avatar the last airbender and Danny Phantom.

Aang sets up a therapy program for ghosts so they can talk out their problems without the need for excess violence. He and Sam get along very well, as they have many ideals in common. He and Tucker also get along well, because Tucker reminds him of Sokka. Aang is essentially on vacation from being the avatar for a bit.

Danny feels obligated to do Aang's job, since he's the reason Aang isn't here. But unfortunately, ghost powers and bending aren't very similar. He can mostly do the bridge-to-the-spirit-world job since he's a half-ghost anyway, and he has a ton of fun fighting Zuko. But an entire army is a little out of his ability. Mostly he's fine until they get to book 3 stuff.

Aphmau from Minecraft diaries and Izuku Midoriya from My hero academia.

Izuku shows up in Phoenix Drop with no idea what's going on, but he gets the scoop pretty quickly. Suddenly their Zane problems go from 'insurmountable' to 'yeah, Midoriya can take care of that in a couple of weeks'.

Meanwhile, Aphmau gets to spend some time in an enviorment where there are people already used to dealing with young people who have no idea how to control their powers, and she gets some time to actually practice with competant teachers.

The seemingly obvious choice for Luo Binghe (or Bingge) would be for him to be a firebender, but. Consider the alternative, Luo Binghe as a waterbender!

It's the fact that waterbending has both healing and bloodbending as sub-bending disciplines, and Luo Binghe's blood parasites also both heal and torture.

I'm drawing SJ next, if you can guess what bending I'm going to give him, you get a cookie 🍪
