You were the youngest of your siblings and it made Danny cling to you. She made sure to protect you, never leaving your side until she was sure you were safe. It had left you a little sheltered to say the least, not that she’d ever let anyone tell you that.

Recently she’d started bringing you to council meetings and when she met with ambassadors. The latest person to request her presence was none other than Yara Greyjoy. Her eyes were focused on the queen, a slight smirk edging onto the outskirts of her lips as she spoke.

You tried to listen to the words, but you couldn’t help but be distracted be her. you had been taught beauty was in dresses, silks, and jewels by your brother, but Yara was beautiful like a dragon. Her leather trousers framed her legs perfectly, her shoulders broad and strong, and her eyes looked like they held the knowledge of the world.

“And I imagine your offer is free of any marriage demands?” your sisters voice brought you back into reality.

Yara’s lips quirked into a smirk, “I never demand,” she started, her eyes lazily falling to you, “but I’m for anything really,” she said, drawing her eyes back to your sister but there was already a hot blush scolding your cheeks.

You were stood beside Danny, but you didn’t need to see her face to know she wore her own smirk. You tried to be calm, keep unnoticed for the rest of the discussion but after asking for independence you couldn’t help but retort after Tyrion spoke, “What if everyone starts demanding their independence?”

“She’s not demanding. She’s asking,” you said, your voice soft but the fact you spoke at all caught them both off guard. Danny turned to you, raising a single eyebrow. You glanced back towards the Ironborn siblings and back to your own, giving a single nod back. it was all you had to do for Danny to know your position and Tyrion to be reminded of his.

Later that evening you were heading towards the hall for dinner when you felt someone’s hand grab your arm. Your head wiped around, eyes wide, only to be met with a smirk. “I’m sorry princess. I did not mean to startle you,” Yara said, her smirk smalling into a soft smile as she looked down at your dress, “I like the fabric. I was never one for frills,”

“I wasn’t either. Till recently at least,”

She chuckled a little, “I’ve only heard snippets about you, but I can imagine your story must be quite interesting,” her eyes were so captivating that the world around you seemed to stop.

“Hardly,” you laughed softly, “Yours though I imagine must be fascinating. I admire a woman who can take charge,” you said but your eyebrows furrowed when she laughed suddenly before realising, “I did not mean- “you tried to object when you realised the double meaning of your phrase.

Yara just chuckled, leaning in to whisper in your ear, “Don’t worry princess. I know exactly what you mean,” she said before pulling away, smiling at the hot flush on your face, “Now I was wondering if I may have the honour of escorting you to dinner? After all I’d hate for you to get hurt on the way to the festivities,” she said, holding out her arm to you.

You smiled and took it, trying your best to avoid her eye and the playful glint in it, “For the record I’d be able to make the journey alone,” you said, not wanting to sound weak to your newfound crush.

A smile peaked onto her lips, “I don’t doubt that princess. Though its good to know you enjoy my company,” she teased.

You felt your skin burn but you managed to smile back at her this time, “Maybe so,”

modern theon is living out of his car (robb’s first that he crashed into mailbox and gave to theon for free) in the parking lot of asha’s apartment complex. sometimes she sends qarl down with a plate of food and a joint because she feels a little bad but not bad enough to let him enter her home. he’s effectively homeless because balon kicked him out for wearing eyeliner and the last time the starks went on family vacation theon lost bran and rickon in the disney world gift shop so they’re not feeling super charitable but sometimes jon will let him climb in through his window because he’s hoping theon’ll show him how to do tricks on his skateboard (theon lied about doing a kickflip once) and theon’s not about to tell him he’s a fraud so he’s taking advantage of the whole thing because it’s january and his car is missing a door (cardboard duct-taped over the hole) and benjen gets jon the best weed in town so usually theon’s able to mooch if he’s annoying and/or persistent enough.

Honestly I was pretty torn on his season 7-8 arc. I don’t think he owed loyalty to the Starks, so the emphasis on him “redeeming” himself irked me a bit, but I do love Theon interacting with Sansa and their relationship in general. His return to Winterfell was good in that it allowed him to interact with her and touch on his arc there, but I don’t think he needed to die, and certainly not as recompense for his past. His interactions with Jon annoyed me; Jon says the only reason he won’t kill Theon is because of what he did for Sansa, which makes no sense to me, as Jon already knows Bran and Rickon didn’t die at Theon’s hand. I loved Theon and Yara’s interactions, and even though I thought the rescue plot was a bit contrived, I enjoyed the reversal of their roles.

i got reminded how funny the greyjoys are again its so awesome how throughout acok youre like god theon you are insane and a weirdo and like sure asha is there and also insane and weird but she's kind of serving with it and yeah aeron is there for two minutes but he seems like he's been through it so its ok he's kinda odd. so you let it pass and then you hit affc and you finally get more greyjoy povs and you realize Oh. They're all like batshit insane. Theon is on the normal side here. Conceptually Imagine being jon and haaating theon growing up because you think he's an asshole and he is yeah and then you meet literally anyone else in his family and theyre like that but worse and also command ships of hundreds of men. SUCH a tragedy we never got any of the starks to meet literally any other greyjoy to have a point of comparison here on what theon couldve been like

Do you think that, if Balon never rebelled, Ned would have married Theon to Sansa or Arya?

Absolutely not, outside of Theon’s egotistical ACOK imagination. As I mentioned in a previous answer about whether Robb would have ever considered giving Theon the seat of Hornwood, Theon was no more and no less than a hostage, seized in the aftermath of the Greyjoy Rebellion both to symbolize the North’s (and more generally the Iron Throne’s) victory over the Greyjoys as well as guarantee that Balon would not try to rise in rebellion again. While Ned may not have relished the idea of potentially killing Theon, and may have thought he was best positioned both to give Theon as normal a life as possible for a hostage and to advocate for Theon’s life to the extent he could, Theon himself certainly sensed that “[t]he whole castle, from Lady Stark to the lowliest kitchen scullion, knew he was hostage to his father's good behavior, and treated him accordingly”. Ned did not, and seemingly did not want to, exclude Theon completely or throw him in a dungeon for the roughly decade Theon spent at Winterfell, but Theon was nevertheless an outsider, not comfortably included in the the Stark family given his delicate and uncertain political position.

We see, at least to a limited extent, what Ned and Catelyn wanted for the marital future of their daughters: Ned’s (initial) acceptance of the Joffrey-Sansa marriage that would give Sansa the highest position possible, and his insistence that Arya “[learn] the ways of a southron court”, since “[i]n a few years she [would] be of an age to marry too”. Neither of those scenarios, I think, would have encompassed wedding Sansa or Arya to a de facto foreign hostage whose father had neither forgiven nor forgotten his, Balon’s, failure during the Greyjoy Rebellion - a marriage, in either case, that would have done nothing to improve the aristocratic standing of Sansa or Arya (much less the Starks generally) and would have sacrificed the girls as useful nuptial pawns for an alliance with a defeated rebel’s son.

And again, it’s always worth remembering that Balon was always going to invade no matter what happened with Theon. What we see in ACOK is that as Theon is arriving home, Balon has already gathered his captains and planned his invasion strategy (to the extent we can call his laughably incompetent plan a “strategy”, anyway). More to the point, Balon had essentially cut Theon for dead once Theon was taken as a hostage, investing his hopes in Asha instead. Theon marrying a “greenlands” girl, daughter of one of the men who had so spectacularly defeated Balon in the latter’s rebellion, wouldn’t have improved Balon’s view of Theon - it would only have hardened Balon’s attitude that Theon was a lost cause and he, Balon, needed revenge on the North.

in modern asoiaf wex is theon’s 12 year old algebra tutor (child genius and teenage dirtbag buddy comedy duo situation) who theon enlists to do the accounting for his business (selling vapes filled with water to kids in the park for 50 bucks each) until lysa finds out he sold robin an ‘e-cigarette’ and calls the police. wex lies to the cops for theon (who’s now temporarily blinded after lysa maced him) so theon is forever in this seventh grader’s debt but the only thing wex asks for is a date with asha because he knows it’ll piss theon off sooooo bad. asha thinks it’s the funniest thing in the world also she hates theon so she and qarl take wex out for ice cream while theon vents in his journal (robb said his therapist recommends it to blow off steam) until he gets bored and punches a hole through the wall next to a neat row of other punched holes covered by posters of half naked men covered by pictures of half naked women. their business is failing btw bran keeps stealing the pre-janked vapes from theon’s bag so he can give them to jojen (neither of them vape they just like to have them) and theon is convinced that the police are watching him and taking his vapes before he can sell them so that the government can force him to get a job because ramsay (lab partner in biology who always smells like pepperoni and b/o) told him about area 51 and now theon’s really scared of the fbi monitoring him and busting up his fake vape business and putting him away for life in one of those freaky facilities ramsay won’t shut up about where they torture you and probe you probably (he tries not to think about the probing because it makes his stomach feel weird). ok good night i loveyou

Doodles of the Greyjoy siblings with a very healthy spattering of headcanon in the designs for Rodrik and Maron since we don't really have descriptions for them lol. I imagine Rodrik as like a spitting image of a young Balon and Maron as taking more after the Harlaw traits appearance wise asides from hair color so he's more of a stocky, strong featured guy instead of lanky and lean like most Greyjoys lol. Rodrik and Asha share a nose (Balon's (or I assume it's a Balon side trait at least since Aeron has the same nose lol)), Maron and Theon have their moms nose.

I have complicated feelings about how close I imagine the siblings were bc we really don't have many moments where Theon or Asha remember them, and from what they do remember, it's mostly negative. However, when Rodrik and Maron died they were likely around the ages that Asha and Theon are now. So early twenties/late teens ironborn men and their like 12 y/o and 9 y/o baby siblings like yeah I'm not surprised Asha and Theon remember them being assholes, I'm sure they were! But you know who else is? Asha and Theon when THEY become early twenties/late teens ironborn 🤣

Def not excusing Rodrik or Maron but by virtue of Asha and Theon only having memories of them from childhood and also from Alannys clearly being devastated at having lost her two eldest boys as well as Theon, I imagine that they were not wholly awful, you know? Just like...normal Greyjoy levels of awful 😭

Imagine if the following happened.

Rhaella lived through childbirth and got to take care of Dany and Viserys

Elia, Aegon and Rhaenys were able to escape to Dorne before the sacking of King's Landing

Arthur Dayne took a pregnant Lyanna to Starfall to find proper care to deliver Jon. But let's say in this au Rhaegar told Arthur the Prince that was promised must be named Daeron III

Jon Connington is called and returns to serve his lord's children

At some point they all link up and begin to plot to restore House Targaryen and take what is rightfully theirs. With Fire & Blood

With Rhaella, Ser Willem, Elia and Arthur around. Viserys never descends into madness and becomes more well adjusted.

Lyanna survived childbirth. Lyanna could not return home. She's too ashamed after her actions led to the deaths of Rickard and Brandon and she knows if she returns with her son, Robert would kill them. Arthur and Lyanna raised Daeron together. One thing led to another and they fell in love.

With outside forces preventing the crown from finding them(Doran, Varys and Illyrio) the Targaryens are never found.

Dany has a happy childhood and while they move every often, she has happy memories with her mother, brother and cousins.

With Rhaella, Doran, Oberyn Arthur and Jon Connington around, Aegon, Rhaenys, Viserys and Daenerys all grow up well versed into politics. Arthur and Oberyn properly turns Aegon, Daeron, Rhaenys, Dany and Viserys into warriors.

Because of Arthur's presence, he would not allow or tolerate Jorah Mormont.

With the vast wealth of Illyrio and Varys influence, an army of sell swords are at their disposal. They have the Golden Company, Windblown, Second Sons, Unsullied, and Storm Crows

With an alliance with Dorne, Aegon is betrothed to Arianne, House Tyrell are known Targaryen loyalists. Daeron is betrothed to Margaery and Daenerys is betrothed to Willas, The Targaryens could reach out to the Greyjoys and promise revenge and plunder. Viserys is betrothed to Asha.

I don't know if the dragons would factor into this au. Maybe there is a ritual, magic via the red priests/priestesses or something they found that could hatch the dragon eggs. If so the dragons are given to Rhaegar's children because prophecy. Aegon's Dragon will be named Visenya(Drogon) Rhaenys' dragon will be named Meria(Rhaegal) and Daeron's will be named Ghost(Viserion)

The War of the Five Kings turns into the War of Kings & Dragons.

Renly runs back to Stannis after he finds out the Tyrell's true allegiances. The brothers put behind their grievances and stand together.

When Cat goes to treat with Renly, she is surprised that Stannis and Renly stand together. They offer Robb a choice, join us. The Lannisters must be dealt with and then deal with the invading Targaryens.

Battle of the Blackwater ends with the Stark-Baratheon alliance victorious. Robb rescues Sansa and Joffrey is executed. Cersei is executed and Tommen is fostered at Casterly Rock by Tyrion. Tywin falls in battle.

Littlefinger is executed and Varys escapes in time to meet with the Targaryens.

The Targaryens arrive. They are met with Dorne, the Ironborn and the Reach.

All out war.

The Targaryens obviously win. But they are smart. They give their enemies the chance to bend the knee.

Then the Targaryens, Starks, and Baratheons unite their forces and marches North. to face their true enemy.

Meanwhile I can see Euron return and hire a Faceless man to kill Willas Tyrell. Euron tries weasels his way into Dany's good graces. There are two ways we can play this. Dany sicks the Kingsguard to kill him or he slowly begins to corrupt her. Blame Viserys and cause Targaryen infighting. And after Viserys is out of the picture. Euron helps Dany take the throne and cement the Targaryens and the Greyjoys alliance through marriage, let the Long Night kill her cousins and they can rule the Iron Throne together and he has the means to bind the dragons to her will.

In the scenario where Dany stays loyal to her family. Euron is captured and is awaiting his execution. With no dragons to burn him. Dany has him executed by Wildfire. "Dracarys"

Ending 1:Rhaegar's prophecy is true and his children save the realm from the Long Night

Ending 2:Aegon, Rhaenys and Daeron sacrifice themselves to end The Others, while Dany brings peace to the realm

Ending 3:The unholy union of Euron and Dany plunges the world into darkness.

like the opportunity to have theon's coat taken by ned when he's made his ward is right there and it is perfect and beautiful and tragic.

and you could build on that depending on the version of the selkie myth/story you're going off of (I personally love the song of the sea version of selkies for story writing). maybe he can't talk without it, maybe he gets sick, maybe his voice has magical properties of sorts.

I have this one concept in my head that I don't have the time to write, but it goes something along the lines of theon getting sick after years away from his coat and the stark kids have to find his coat and drag his slowly dying ass to the bay of seals (cause y'know bay of seals and theon's a selkie so he'll turn into a seal... I thought it was creative).

also, in a lot of versions of selkies, when they get sick, their hair turns white, which is on brand for theon. they're also pretty, their stories are typically soaked to the bone in tragedy, they're normally held captive/tortured, amongst other things, which are also very on brand for theon.

and maybe you get some selkie to selkie telepathy of sorts, so when theon finally enter the water a seal again, asha books it to come find him, cause its been years since she's been able to feel him (I'm soft for them, I will create the most improbable and ridiculous scenario's to bring them together and for them to have soft sibling moments).

all and all, theon being a selkie is something I need more content of, please and thank you.
