♥️Reveling in Richonne - TOWL

#47: The Lovebirds & The Snake (1.05)

Up to this point we'd been having such a nice time with our little lovebirds...and then there comes a snake in their midst. 😪

But one of the things on my internal TOWL wishlist was Michonne having the chance to finally confront Jadis and tear her up...and well, TOWL yet again said 'wish granted.' 😌🧞‍♀️...

Outside of Richonne’s cozy cabin of love, we’re given our first indicator of how the world will soon be back to screaming at them when we see none other than trifling Jadis ominously making her way to the cabin. 😒

But before Jadis confronts Richonne, there’s a flashback to three years ago when Jadis first met up with Father Gabriel for the start of their annual tea times. 🙃

Now, I tend to want to fast-forward most of these Jadis/Father Gabriel scenes during a rewatch since they’re a little dragged out to me. But there is one particular thing that I very much loved hearing during their meetups. We'll talk about it later.👌🏽

Also, let me just say that this revelation that Jadis had been visiting Father Gabriel annually had me side-eying both of them hard. 😒

You mean to tell me, for years Jadis got to look forward to her little meetups with Gabe while knowing she’s the reason Rick doesn’t even get to know if his wife and daughter are okay or get to see them ever again??? Jadis isn't just trifling, she's evil. 😤

And as for that man Father Gabriel…😑. Seeing his involvement in these secret meetups had me like...

I was truly looking at Father Gabriel like SIR, if you would have let Michonne know that Jadis - who disappeared around the same time as Rick - meets up with you and she has a whole helicopter, I just know Michonne would have put two and two together very quickly.

Like Daryl is an elite tracker and he was never able to trace down Rick almost as if Rick, idk, just disappeared into the sky or something. If Michonne and Daryl knew about Jadis and her helicopter I just know they’d tell Father Gabriel to expect some company during his next annual meeting with that snake. Because they’d want to come along and ambush Jadis to try and get some potential answers about Rick's whereabouts. 

And I would've been in full support of Michonne and Daryl's tea-time ambush, like...

When chatting with Father Gabriel, Jadis acts like she doesn’t know anything when he says Rick died on that bridge and again - Jadis, you beast.

I feel like these flashbacks were intended to humanize Jadis but a lot of it just made me think about how heartless and selfish she is by seeking her own moments of personal connection with Gabriel while keeping Rick from his family. Had me looking at Jadis like...

So then they cut to Rick and Michonne looking precious and serene while they sleep in that tiny bed. ☺️

Seeing them like this made me so happy because, after years of going to bed alone, they finally get to fall asleep in each other's arms again, where they’re most meant to be. You just know this is some of the best sleep they’ve got in years. 👌🏽😌

And, it's only seen for a split second, but I love how Rick is holding Michonne with his bandaged arm and she has her arm over his. Like I'm just so glad that Rick gets to go from experiencing the wild, lonely, and traumatizing day he chopped off his hand to now having that very arm held by the love of his life while they peacefully sleep. 🥹

And clearly, whatever they were up to the night before had Richonne knocked out, because Jadis is fully in the room with guns aimed at them and they don't even wake up until she actually speaks.

I admit I did like hearing Richonne be called 'lovebirds' as Jadis greets them saying, “Morning, lovebirds.” 🤭 But at the same time, Jadis has always taken an odd and intrusive interest in Richonne's relationship so it was annoying hearing this come from her as well 😑

And this moment is very much giving similar vibes to Richonne’s canon ep in season 6 when they’re fast asleep and Jesus pulls up on them and startles them awake.

(Side note: I was thinking about how Jesus walked in on them in 6.10 and he really was too bold for that. 🙈 Like not only does Paul enter their house in the wee hours, he enters their bedroom. 🙃 And then even seeing that Rick is asleep and naked in bed with someone, he's still like psst we need to talk. And with what he had to talk about...it was important but it wasn't 'roll up on you and your woman in bed' urgent, so he could have waited a minute. 😅 But Paul's bold self barging in made for an iconic moment so I'll take it, even tho he definitely tried it lol.)

Both in the season 6 moment and this episode 5 moment Richonne immediately hops out of bed and grabs weapons and I love how in TOWL there’s sort of a weapon reversal with Michonne grabbing the ax and Rick grabbing a sword.

Two things about Richonne: they sleep very well after a night together & they're also instantly ready to be in fight mode if need be.

And, I love the little detail of having Michonne in Rick’s boxers. 😊 Also the body = ☕️, of course. 💅🏽

Jadis tells Michonne to tie Rick to the bed and sit down. They know they’re kinda cornered so Rick drops his weapon. And you just know Rick is extra pissed because he had every intention of starting their morning more like this...

And then I like how Michonne lingers a little bit and just stares Jadis down before dropping her weapon. Baddest 👏🏽 Chick 👏🏽 In 👏🏽 The 👏🏽 Game 👏🏽.

Once again, if looks could kill Michonne’s stare would have Jadis dropping dead right then and there. I had been very eager for Michonne to have a chance to tear Jadis up after everything she’s done and Michonne looks like she wants to do exactly that now that they’re finally face to face. 💯

So Michonne ties Rick to the bed and then they prove that a couple that death stares together stays together the way they both look at Jadis like it’s about to be her last day on earth.

Michonne calmly asks Rick, “You think she’s alone?” And never one to miss an opportunity to call Jadis out, Rick answers, “She’s alone. And I bet nobody knows she’s here.” He knows Jadis acts in self-interest so she’s probably trying to handle this solo to keep the truth about Rick and Michonne from linking back to her.

Jadis says, “That’s just rude,” and then y’all, we get more um shall we say 'insight?' into Richonne as a couple when Rick pretty effortlessly tightens Michonne’s zip ties with his teeth. As many have noted, this felt a little too natural to be a first-time thing for them lol. 🤭

I love how they so easily operate like a well-oiled machine doing this, and again they seem more inconvenienced than threatened by this snake in front of them. 

One of the many things Michonne and Rick have in common is they aren't afraid to be a little petty with an opp every now and then, so once again Michonne is just talking to Rick like Jadis isn’t even in the room when she asks, “How do you think she found us?”

Michonne's letting Jadis know girl, you don't even deserve to be addressed directly.

Jadis realizes this petty couple is probably gonna keep ignoring her unless she interjects, so she says she’s just gonna jump in. And then she explains how she found them. She was suspicious of the circumstances surrounding their disappearance and when she went to the wreck she noticed a missing yellow truck.

As Jadis goes on and on about following their breadcrumbs on the route to Virginia, Rick again doesn’t address Jadis as he tells Michonne, “Nobody knows she’s here.” He’s over this serpent.

And Michonne confidently responds, “She missed her chance. She should’ve killed us while we were sleeping.” Richonne's energy here was really giving 'anyway...back to the conversation.'

Also, Rick and Michonne truly are cut from the same cloth because Michonne saying what Jadis should have done to them in this scene reminded me of Rick in the season 6 premiere when he finds that shady Alexandrian, Carter, going behind his back and he tells Carter how he would have done things if he was in his shoes lol.

Also, I love how within a span of 24 hours, Richonne has had guns pointed at them twice and both times they act like the one with the gun is the one in danger. And they’re correct. 👌🏽

It was fun seeing Richonne operate in the spirit of petty and unbothered together lol. They’re fed up with Jadis and y'all...

Jadis says she didn’t kill them because she previously left things unsaid between a confidante and didn’t want to do that before killing both of them.

Rick accurately tells Jadis about herself when he accuses her of just playing games and not really caring about the army or the city. She really does just play games in this franchise - putting the Anne in shenanigans for years and years. 😪

And Rick calling her Anne seems to get under Jadis' skin as she insists that she does care about the CRM and their mission and she’s not that woman she used to be in TWD. Also - the way Richonne is looking at her while she talks, it’s giving lethal lovebirds. 😌

Despite Jadis’ yapping about who she is now and why she’s doing this, Rick still is adamant that she’s doing this for her. Jadis says if she let Rick and Michonne go home then her important work would end if another officer found them.

And then the snake tries to pull her reoccurring line to Rick by looking at him and saying, “I saved your life.”

Jadis has spent years trying to force that 'life-saving' narrative on Rick but see, this time it goes a little different because now Michonne is here to set the record all the way straight.

I appreciate that the second Michonne hears Jadis say she saved Rick's life, she immediately shuts that down and addresses Jadis directly for the first time to remind her, “You took it. You took it from him. You took it from me. You took it from our children.” 👏🏽💯

Exactly.

I love how Michonne is so fiercely defending her family and how she phrases it in a way that makes it clear that Jadis taking Rick took life from him and it took life from each of the members of his immediate family. Their family is their life and in keeping them from each other Jadis really did take so much from them. 😔

And now that Michonne knows Rick had been living while dead with the CRM, she really does mean it when she says Jadis took his life. (Also again, hearing Michonne or Rick say “our children” never gets old.)

Michonne continues, passionately saying, “All those years they grew up without their father. All those years I didn’t know if he was alive or dead.” I’m so glad Michonne got a chance to go off about this because truly these things she's talking about are a big part of why what Jadis did is so appalling.

Judas really forced kids to be without their father for years, and she knew it too. She might not have known about RJ (even tho who knows what Father Gabriel might've told her during one of their meetups) but she knew Rick had a young daughter. She knew he had a wife. And yet she still used Rick as leverage to 'upgrade' her life. So to Jadis I forever say...

And Rick is ready to match the energy and cosign everything Michonne is saying when he declares, “You stole our family, Anne.”

Richonne letting this snake finally know the truth of the matter, truly had me like...

But of course, Jadis acts like she doesn’t care and is unmoved by the damage she caused to the Grimes family. 😒

She explains why she didn’t kill Rick and Michonne in their sleep, saying she needed to thank them.

Jadis states, “By dying here today, Alexandria will remain safe and your children will have a better world.” What kind of screwed-up logic has her thinking Judith and RJ will have a better world without their parents in it??? The CRM has people losing their everloving minds. 😑

Once again the subject of 'choices' comes up when Jadis says, “You could have made other choices, but you didn’t lose here. You won a different way. It’s the end of your story. Let that be your peace.”

I don’t exactly know everything that Jadis’ work entailed with the CRM since I think it was explored more in spin-offs which I didn’t watch, but I can tell that she clearly is used to these assassinations going her way. However, baby, this is Richonne so of course they are not about to go out like this.

The second Judas shoots at them, Rick and Michonne quickly get out of dodge. Rick tosses the bed on her and then Michonne is able to get in a much-deserved swipe at Jadis with RJ's ax which feels poetic somehow. 👏🏽 Like after Bowlcut played a big role in RJ not having his dad in his life for the first 7 years, now her time is getting cut short by the very weapon his parents got for him. Idk I just like to think of it as Michonne & RJ getting their lick back. 😋

Jadis scurries away and Michonne is ready to end her asap when she tries to shoot at her but Rick stops her. And the way Michonne says Rick's name, the woman is seeing red when it comes to killing Jadis. And same here, cuz I was yelling at Jadis like...

Rick says they need to go cuz they have to stop her. So Michonne breaks her zip ties as they then head off for a little car chase action where Michonne will remind Rick of exactly why Jadis has gots to go today. 👌🏽😌

do I like Gabriel and Gideon? YES I LOVE THEM (this will be long so BEWARE) (quick edit, I DONT KNOW IF I DID THIS RIGHT NO ONE HAS EVER ASKED FOR MY OPINION BEFORE LMAO)

I feel they get severely mistreated. Gabriel is talked about in TID as this bad person. but is he really a bad person? his little sister gets humiliated so he takes matters in his hands (even if he fails) and then gets branded as the person who’s the problem. when it’s actually Will. Will is the one with the fake curse who treats everyone like shit and gets zero repercussions for it. what is so terrible that Gabriel did? I mean, he does say some stuff about Jem (not his proudest moment) but he ends up stepping away from his father, his fathers actions, and ends up trying to become a better person.

the fact that Will tries to make it seem that gabriel is only interested in Cecily to “get back” at Will is insane. SOME PEOPLE HAVE OTHER CONCERNS ADMIRATIONS HOPES DREAMS THAT DONT INVOLVE YOU WILL. Gabriel isn’t the one treating a woman as his whore but that’s for another day 😌 in my mind, gabriel is passionate, he has a soft side, and he will fight for what is his. I truly think he’s a wonderful father but it’s a shame we didn’t see him actually be a parent. the writing doesn’t allow us to see Gabriel’s growth. Anna can be seen as problematic and Christopher going to Grace after what she did to James is a little out of character but that’s mainly the writing. CC doesn’t understand how to execute her characters and show growth unless she accidentally does it for someone she doesn’t care about

Gabriel is one of my favorite lightwoods. he’s got one of those soft hearts and uses this defense with his sarcasm and jokes so people can’t hurt him. he has to kill his father and the whole thing ends up being a joke which I think is insanely messed up. I think the whole Gabriel and Will thing doesn’t get talked about. yeah Will has trauma but he uses it as an excuse to be awful to everyone. Gabriel has trauma but he tries to grow from it. Gabriel isn’t out here saying “oh I killed my father and had a bad childhood so I can treat you how I see fit.” I don’t ever recall Will ever apologizing or showing growth for his actions. but I do see Gabriel saying how he wishes to change and actually changing.

imagine if Gabriel humiliated Cecily or used Will’s fathers issues as a joke and song. then everyone would be like “omg Gabriel can you stop being a dickish bastard for one second please?” but Will jests on Gabriel’s trauma so all is well I guess. I don’t think Gabriel gets enough love. I just think almost everyone making Gabriel’s trauma into a song and joke is vastly disgusting and messed up and I hate no one ever talks about it

I adore Gabriel and Cecily together. I think they fit really well together. they’re both fierce, strong, and passionate. it’s a shame we didn’t get to see them grieve Christopher or any of their development. Gabriel not saying anything when Alexander gets kidnapped is sloppy and lazy writing. these two really get shoved in the back after TID

one of my fav Gabriel moments is when he tosses that demon into the river and his one liners are BEAUTIFUL

GIDEON!!!!!! what a sweet, beautiful, and thoughtful man. it’s funny how before he’s introduced, they’re like “you think Gabriel’s awful? wait for his brother” and he’s the most kindest man. is the evil in the room with us????? it’s adorable how he cusses in Spanish because he’s happy 🥲 Gideon tripping over his words and making a fool of himself for Sophie is high tier entertainment. Gideon seems to be a very calm soul. where Gabriel is a more reckless storm, Gideon is the calmness we need. he’s strict with Gabriel but it’s because he wants the best for Gabriel. I’ll always love the moody and quiet brother with the loud and always has something to say brother. we didn’t get enough of them bonding and arguing

now Gideon gets some growth. he goes to Spain and understands his father is wrong and he actively chooses to leave, tries to bring his brother back, and actually helps Charlotte. he’s another of my favorite characters. he’s very quiet but when he has something to say, it’s loud and clear. Thomas really embodies gideon and Sophie. I also really love Sophie and Gideon! Sophie takes a backseat after TID which is another shame

Sophie takes no prisoners and I love her calling out anyone who disrespects her family and herself. (Tessa acting like Gideon is a bad person and trying to warn Sophie off, girl the man you like treats you as some whore shut up already) it’s sad we don’t get more of Sophie. it would’ve been nice to see her as a shadowhunter and the family dynamic. Sophie and Gideon are just really good people full of love. it shows in their parenting because of what we see of Thomas, Eugenia, and some of Barbara. I think Gabriel and Gideon used their traumatic upbringing and decided to be better than what they had. they broke the cycle in a way. and this is only pertaining to their kids, I have no clue what happened to make Robert who he was 😬

one of my fav highlights of Gideon: when he tries to purpose to Sophie and his dry humor and MAN HES JUST SO FUCKING PRECIOUS AND MUST BE PROTECTED and I love Gideon defending Thomas 🥹

I don’t think their treatment gets talked about enough. they are almost perceived as the villains when they have the most growth in TID and are far from being villains. I think they’re both very funny and Gideon seems to have a dry humor that isn’t appreciated enough. in my head, they’re super supportive of one another and constantly are hosting family nights together. I don’t believe the whole the merry thieves first meeting at the academy when their families are close. I really see Gideon and Alastair bonding and hitting it off right away. I also see Gabriel and Cecily being like “we’ve had our childhood taken from us so we are here for you” and just making Alastair feel at home. (IN A GOOD WAY)

I really hate how Gabriel and Cecily get left behind. they don’t get to grieve Christopher. Anna desperately needs some guidance and little Alexander’s kidnapping doesn’t get mentioned or is the focus. we do get to see gideon and Sophie kind of grieve Barbara, but I would have wanted to see more of them with Thomas and Eugenia gets left out. when Thomas gets accused of murder, we don’t see Sophie anywhere near Thomas or see Thomas have a conversation with Gideon about it.

Gideon and Gabriel are severely underrated and underutilized. they’re the best part of TID (besides Jem) and the only reason I read that ghastly series. they don’t get talked about enough that I see. they get this villain treatment from CC when they’re anything but that. we don’t get to see Gabriel and Gideon much in TLH (which I get it’s not about them but it wouldn’t hurt to feature them) so that’s also sad

but all in all, I love these two so much and I wish we could have had more of them. they’re beautiful, passionate, fun, and humorous together 🥹 (you made me realize more how much I miss them so thank you) I could take more of Gabriel and Gideon tripping over their words and literally themselves to impress the women they’re in love with. it’s a real treat

I finished the second one and this is NOT legolas! What is wrong with them!!!! Did they hate him??? Legolas would never leave anyone almost dying! And also the fight scenes were so bad! What was that with the punching? And why is he so angry!! Like I'm supposed to believe he is the same person who used to talk about the leaves and their exact shades and the stories of forests all the time in the book? Legolas is supposed to be soft and gentle and not an angry jealous guy. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM!

And you know what I hate tauriel's character. I wish movie makers would understand that we don't need to ruin other characters to have a girl boss :( . They did not need to ruin Legolas and Thranduil to make her great. I would have liked her so much more if she had even one flaw, if she felt scared let's say in a moment or if she was nervous to break Thranduil's order. But no she is Ms. Perfectly Fine and she is always right! Legolas joined the fellowship to save the world when he didn't need to, he could have just left like many other elves but he didn't. He does not need someone to tell him to save the world. He also stayed to help Aragorn with Gondor's restoration. He is kind he would help anyone he can without any thoughts about himself!

Also that Athelas scene made me ??? And how did Kili get attacked by a morgul arrow? And now they are telling me she can heal like Aragorn and Elrond? I know they did not show Kili recovering yet but he obviously will cause he would die while protecting Thorin (unless they change it in the movie). And even Elrond couldn't really heal Frodo completely. You know Gandalf was wrong. He should have given the ring to Tauriel and she would have defeated Sauron, save Rohan and Gondor and destroy the ring in like 3 days 😭

And they did not even have the dragon get killed in this movie! What an ending that is? He just went flying away? This movie should have been an hour long (actually all of them) and it would have been so much better. And why did they have Bard get arrested?

I did like Bilbo a little more in the second half so that's the only nice thing I can say about this movie 😭

(Bestie I am astonished by this rant 😭 I think I have some really strong feelings about this movie)

CGI in those movies is truly bad, you can tell they didn't polish it to look smooth, I don't know what's going on in technical terms but I dislike it.

Taichi would be lying to himself if he said that he had remembered Sora’s birthday correctly.

In fact, in the week leading up to it, he kept thinking he was forgetting something important but couldn’t put a finger on it. Until he arrived at school that morning and passed by Sora’s classroom, almost doing a double take noticing the crowd that had gathered inside. He’d always known that she was the kind of girl who made friends with people easily, but it was when he saw seniors and juniors alike handing her little packages and wishing her enthusiastically did Taichi realise, that maybe he didn’t know Sora all that well after all. He’d quickly made his way back to his own classroom, a little grateful that they weren’t in the same class this year and he could take this time to think about how he was going to make it up to her.

A distant memory of a failed gift from his childhood appeared in Taichi’s mind, how when he’d assumed what was better for Sora without asking her how she felt, it left her feeling upset with him during a crucial Digimon attack. He reminded himself to not make a mistake like that again, lest a wormhole opened up above their school and dropped more evil Digimon which Sora might refuse to fight against together with him.

All jokes aside, Taichi knew that he had to act and act fast. He texted Koushiro casually, asking him if he’d gotten anything for Sora at school, trying to make it seem like that he just wanted to check whether it was better to hand over the gift later, outside of school. His friend replied almost instantly, stating that he’d handed his gift to the birthday girl right at the school entrance this morning. Taichi tried his best not to curse under his breath, he’d seen a glimpse of Mimi’s pastel hair in Sora’s classroom, so he knew there was no point in asking the chirpy brunette. So as a last resort, he turned in his seat and came face to face with his best friend.

“You forgot Sora’s birthday,” Yamato muttered dryly, not looking up from the book he was reading, as if this conversation didn’t deserve that honour.

“Yeah.” Taichi accepted his fault, knowing that there was no point in trying to hide the truth from someone as observant as Yamato.

“And?” Yamato turned the page of the book he was reading and still did not seem as invested enough in this problem as Taichi would like him to be.

“Did you get her anything?”

“I’m dating her best friend, Taichi, so of course we got her a gift. As a matter of fact, we handed it over to her yesterday itself.” Yamato stated this as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, and it was Taichi’s fault that he hadn’t figured it out yet.

“And you didn’t think of reminding me?” Taichi asked, exasperated by his best friend’s cold behaviour.

“What am I? Your assistant?”

“No, I’d like to think you’re my best friend, but apparently not.” Taichi gritted his teeth and turned away from Yamato, letting his head drop on his desk with a loud thud that scared some of his classmates seated around him.

“Just go to the convenience store during lunch and buy her some chocolates.” Yamato offered in a much softer tone than before, maybe the best friend comment seemed to get to him.

“It’s Sora! I can’t just buy her cheap chocolates for her birthday.”

As much as he wanted to hide his guilt and frustration with himself, it was hard to keep the emotions in when he felt so helpless. With his current track record of gifting stupid stuff to Sora, he wanted to make sure that this time around he’d get her something she would truly like. Of course, to do that he should’ve strived to remember her birthday correctly in the first place. However, Taichi still felt that if he had time on his side, he could make up for this blunder and walk up to Sora with the perfect gift in his hand. Maybe Yamato had figured his intentions out too, because he heard his friend sigh loudly behind him.

“I’ll help you in avoiding her today,” Yamato said.“Just make sure you go buy a gift after school and hand it over to her in the evening.”

“You’d do that for me?” Taichi raised his head and looked at Yamato with shining eyes.

“Yes. I am your best friend right?” Yamato smirked as he turned his attention back to his book.

It seemed that Yamato and Mimi were addicted to texting each other in between classes, which is how his best friend was able to figure out Sora’s schedule for the day, and that made hiding from her a very simple task for Taichi. He managed to keep his profile low the entire day, only stepping out from the comfort of his classroom when it was time for his afternoon soccer practice. But he wasn’t worried about getting caught then since most of the school would’ve emptied by the time his practice was over and Yamato had mentioned something about Sora making plans with Mimi for the evening.

And that’s why, as practice went on and Taichi completely immersed himself in the sport, he let his guard down, ruining all the effort he’d put into staying under the radar during school hours.

He stood gulping down water from his sipper at the edge of the soccer field. Their Coach had wrapped up practice with a few words of advice and while most of his teammates were heading back to the locker room, he considered if he should stay back for about thirty minutes to work on his weak points. He’d already figured out what he would buy for Sora, so he knew he wouldn’t take too much time in getting the gift to her, which should free up some extra time for soccer right now. The sun had only just begun to set and Taichi viewed the orange hue that had started to spread across the skyline with a hint of confusion.

Before he could reach a decision, however, he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist.

Taichi felt his whole body tremble as a familiar and sweet, flowery scent reached him along with the warmth that spread across his back as someone pressed themselves against it. He was frozen to the spot and colour rushed into his cheeks when he looked down and noticed the slender arms that now rested comfortably around his waist. The dimmed rays of sunlight made the beige coloured skin shine like bronze, making his fingers twitch with an ache to trace his name slowly across her arm.

“Gotcha!” A soft giggle reached his ears as he felt a chin rest upon his shoulder.

Taichi tried his best to not jump as an electric sensation ran across his body through his ears, the part where Sora’s breath had tickled against his skin still buzzing. His heart began to beat fast when the fact that Sora’s chest was now touching his back registered in his panic stricken mind.

Deep down he didn’t mind the proximity, especially when Sora had been the one to initiate it.

He was used to letting his hand brush past hers or bumping his shoulder with hers when they walked side by side. He didn’t try to hold himself back when he sat next to her, letting his knee rest by hers, letting his head fall onto her shoulder for a quick nap. He never hesitated to take her hand into his own when they walked through crowded streets or ran to get to school on time. However, Sora had never done anything like this before, sure she played along with him when he tried it, but in those few moments when he expected this of her, she’d shy away by averting her gaze or moving further apart.

Something about today must really be different for Sora to suddenly hug him from behind like this.

With all the willpower he could muster, Taichi pried her hands away from his body carefully and took a few step forwards, so he could turn around and face her with a nervous smile.

“Happy Birthday.”

“Thank you.” She returned his smile in full, cherry eyes filled with excitement as she looked at him.

“You’re quite the popular girl today, huh?” Taichi joked, an attempt to hide the anxiousness of being caught before he had the time to get her a gift.

“Is that why you didn’t come to see me all day today?” Sora folded her arms across her chest, tilting her head as she passed him a confused look.

“Yeah.” He lied, swallowing the nervous gulp in his throat with great difficulty, “Almost couldn’t find you, what with your ladies in waiting forming a wall around you.”

Sora narrowed her eyes at him, he could see the gears in her mind turning as she dissected his words and behaviour. He squirmed under her gaze, finding it difficult to hold his ground, he looked up at the sky instead and started to whistle in a low tune. If Sora hadn’t figured out he was trying to hide something from her till now, he knew that this would’ve definitely given him away. As expected, in the next moment she shook her head and sighed tiredly.

“You forgot it was my birthday today, didn’t you?”

“No, I did not! I totally remembered, you just looked so busy-”

“Oh, Taichi please don’t lie to me today.” She interrupted him with a raised hand and he hated how disappointed she sounded. This was the exact opposite of how he’d expected their conversation to go once he finally decided to face her today.

“Just admit that you forgot, I won’t be mad at you,” Sora said, letting her hands drop to her side so she could fidget with the hem of her uniform skirt.

“I didn’t forget.” Taichi reasserted, though he had no idea from where he was getting the guts to lie so confidently. “I...I even- I even prepared an amazing gift for you.”

Since he’d already dug a hole for himself with the first lie, Taichi decided that he might as well dig a little deeper. Looking at the sudden spark of interest that spread across Sora’s face, he felt more motivated to keep going with the plan he’d just come up with a few seconds ago, despite how utterly crazy and reckless it was.

“Really?” She asked him, eyes wide with hope as she stared at him.

“Yeah. I spent a lot of time thinking about what I should get you this year.” Taichi cleared his throat and took a step forward, reducing the distance between them slightly, “But nothing I saw seemed like the perfect gift that I know you deserve, so I came up with something else. Something...something I couldn’t have given you in front of everyone else.”

The sun had pretty much disappeared against the tall skyscrapers of Tokyo, which left the sky drenched in deep shades of purples and oranges. The violet hues danced off of Sora’s auburn hair, surrounding her with a reddish glow that made it hard for Taichi to look away from. Her bright eyes were fixed on him, anticipation bubbling through them as a pink tint spread across her cheeks. What he was about to do next scared him slightly, but looking at her right now, when she was surrounded by a mesmerising radiance that beckoned Taichi to come closer, he knew that he was taking the right step.

This might not be the gift he’d originally thought of, but it was still a perfect gift nonetheless.

With that thought, Taichi took another step forward to close the distance between them.

He cupped Sora’s chin in his hand and tilted her face upwards, pressing his lips to hers gently. He smiled against her lips when he felt both her hands clutch onto his t-shirt as he leaned deeper into the kiss. A soft moan reached his ears when he used his tongue to caress her lips, tasting her orange-flavoured lip balm. He raised his other hand and traced his fingers across her cheek, feeling her soft skin at his fingertips just so he could remind himself that this wasn’t a dream, but he really was standing on the school soccer field and kissing Sora.

The thought jolted awake his rational side and Taichi pulled away from the kiss abruptly, darting his head around to check if they were being watched. He sighed with relief when he noticed that the lights were out in the school building and the field was completely deserted as well. When he turned his attention back to Sora, he saw that she was still clinging to his chest as pouted up at him.

“So..uh..yeah, happy birthday,” Taichi murmured as he avoided looking at her eyes, feeling the repercussion of his bold move flood to his cheeks in the form of a hot flush.

“Hm. I wouldn’t consider it a happy birthday yet,” Sora said as her lips curved upwards and she let her gaze drop to his lips.

“Uh, I don’t understand-”

“Come on, Taichi,” Sora smirked at him as she stood on her toes so she could lean closer towards him. A mischievous glint danced across her dark, rosy eyes as her smile and low tone suggested more than what her innocent words let on, “You can still give me a better gift than that, right?”

Taichi held his breath for a moment, waiting to see if Sora would laugh and push him away, claiming that she was just joking. But when her eyes stayed fixed on his face and her hands continued to hold onto his chest tightly, he allowed himself to grin as he snaked one arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him.

“The birthday girl’s wish is my command.”

i'm actually gonna go ahead and say april. i know we don't see a lot of her and everything we see of her is in relation to chueam, but she is great at all that. she is just an amazing and supportive girlfriend through and through.

sand and boston are currently fighting over that title. sand is likely winning, but by a very small margin. and like, props to boston, because while i knew that i'd love sand almost the second he showed up, boston went from "you're annoying, but in a compelling and entertaining way, so i'll give you that" to "i stand with my cancelled wife" and that's impressive as hell.

episode 10, actually! it completely knocked it out of the fucking park. i think it could be that my feelings are also heightened by the fact that episodes 10 in the past have given me the "we're coming up to a trainwreck" feeling so many times, while the ofts episode 10 made me even more in love with the series and extremely confident in the last two episodes. but it was also just incredibly good. it fully turned my feelings about boston and bostonnick around, it brought up the final issues with raysand and put them on the path to resolving absolutely everything that needs to be resolved to be happy together, it gave me the cunty bitch that is boeing, it made mew completely unhinged, it made top squirm. everything i could have possibly fucking wished for and even more.

this one is hard actually, so i'm going to divide the answer into three. 1) force. obviously. he's been one of my favourite actors since enchante and that has not changed one bit. he is doing an amazing job at playing someone i deeply dislike, truly showing off his range here. 2) first. i've always appreciated his acting, but i've never been able to enjoy it to the full unhinged level, because there was something about each of his previous characters that i did not like. now that he is playing someone i am ready to kill and maim for, i am enjoying his performance tenfold. 3) neo. i've seen him in things before and i have liked his acting, but he truly took it to a new level with boston. he is so unbelievably fucking good at what he does that i recently told one of my friends i think he is the best actor from the 2000s gang and i do absolutely stand by that.

boston and nick, in different ways. as i said before, boston used to kind of annoy me but in a way that was entertaining. but then he just moved on from his own mess with such ease that it made megiggle and episode 10 finally solidified both how lonely he actually is (seeing as his whole friend group doesn't actually care about him) and also how he can, in fact, change and realise things about himself and open up in a really meaningful and beautiful way, all of which made him jump to being a fave. as for nick, i've always liked that messy messy bitch, but the things that he took away from the situation with boston, the fact that he realised and acknowledged where he fucked up, the fact that he just genuinely loves boston and sees the best in him but also finally respected boundaries to the full and was planning to leave him alone? the beautiful growth there just made me adore him.

So Cassandra Clare posted that Fairstairs art yesterday or sth where Cordelia was obviously whitewashed. We all know what art was that🤷🏼‍♀️

So people started being mad about which is obviously fair cause it was our first official chot art and that's what we got. What happened next:

People posted these CJ's arts talking about whitewashing. ⚠️As a person who spent LOTS of years being a part of tsc fandom, I remember that these ones were created around 6 years ago, before the first book came out, cause Cordelia was supposed to be a white girl⚠️And that's what i said. Did i support new fairstairs art? No, but if you don't believe me, you can always read what i said.

⚠️Next thing: i defended CJ saying that it's CC who controls how these characters should be depicted.⚠️Why i did it: cause that person spent years and years creating beautiful arts for this fandom, adding those works to whitewashing post seemed weird.

My fault: i focused my words more on protecting CJ. That's absolutely true, i said that new Fairstairs art is a fckn joke, but for some people who also have emotions, my answer looked like I don't care about the whole point of the post. That's not true at all and for that I really wanna apologize.

⚠️Next thing: people who really know me and cared about me showed me some of CJs arts where Cordelia has a really really dark skin and some of her weird answers about "why cordelia always has different skin colour on different arts" (she didn't take it seriously). vecna tries to get steve and you try to save him | 4.3k, fem!reader, thank you to my dear @mrsrobinbuckley for this request and help with making it happen. this is the angstiest thing i've ever written, and it's a lot of steve and the love of his friends, but it's got steve x reader too! cw for mentions of neglect, a small mention of abuse, and plenty of negative thoughts from vecna. but steve gets saved by the power of love (and the eagles bc i love them), don't worry!

Steve has thought about what he'd see if Vecna wormed into his brain. It's been hard not to -- in the moments he's not worrying about Max or Eddie or you or the rest of his friends he's wondered.

Wondered if he's fucked up enough to be on the hit list. Maybe he'd be back at the party with Nancy and it would be a worse version of his already miserable memories. Or maybe it would be his parents coming home and wishing he wasn't there at all. His dad telling him he's a disappointment, finally caving and slapping him like Steve's always thought he wanted to.

It's stupid then, in hindsight, that he didn't even consider that Vecna would use you. You, his best friend, his heart, you who loves him so much and so well that Steve doesn't figure it out right away when it finally happens. Nancy, Robin, Eddie, and Dustin have gone through the portal and Steve kneels to boost you up to the rope. He takes his eyes off you for a second as you look up at the rope and back at him before stepping on this thigh.

But then something shifts and the trailer smells like someone spilled gasoline, the sharp, acrid scent making Steve wrinkle his nose and blink a few times. The lights flicker and he shakes it off because of course weird shit is happening. He's about to go into an evil hell dimension to destroy a zombified telekinetic serial killer.

"C'mon," he says, patting his thigh. "Up you go." But instead of putting your boot on his leg you plant it to his chest and shove him to the ground. He sprawls on his back, the breath knocked out of him.

"Hey, what the hell--" he sputters, but you interrupt.

"Stevie," you croon, but it's a sickly sweet tone he's never heard from you before. He tries to blink away the shock as his skin starts to crawl. "You can just stay here. We don't need you." His brain tries to catch up to what's happening because he knows this isn't right but the words cut all the same.

"I don't need you. I've never needed you," you continue. He tries to scoot back down the hallway of Eddie's trailer as you step over him, a cruel smile on your face. "None of us have ever needed you, Steve. Why don't you just go home?"

He knows something is wrong. He's trying to remember what's wrong, he knows what it is, but he feels so small on the ground and you're saying these awful things he's only ever thought to himself before.

"Go home to your empty house. Go home and rot, Steve Harrington."

You're trying really hard not to scream into Steve's slack face as you fist your hands in his jacket and shake him.

"Steve, Steve, please hear me," you gasp. "Steve, please." Panic claws at your throat and tears are hot at the corners of your eyes. His own are milky white and his whole body is still in front of you. It was one thing to see it on Max and Nancy, but another entirely for it to be Steve. Steve, who you never thought Venca would go after. Steve, who is the center, the protector, the heart.

You'd only looked away for a second before turning back to crack a joke about getting him on his knees and he was just frozen. Your blood ran cold and you yelled up through the gate that Vecna was here and he had Steve. Eddie dove through the portal with Nancy, Robin, and Dustin on his heels.

The metalhead looks like he's going to tear his own hair out. "There weren't fucking symptoms! You didn't have any symptoms, Harrington!"

"What do we do?" Dustin yells, voice cracking. "What do we do? Do we keep with the plan? How can we when he's---" Robin pulls him to her and they cling to each other. You know you're crying now, the tears hot on your face.

"No," Nancy says. "We need to save him first. We will save him first." Her voice wobbles but she sounds determined, the same tone she used before diving into the lake, the same way you've always known her to sound. Nancy Wheeler will not lose.

"Tapes!" Robin cries, reaching for your shoulder. "Tapes. Just like with Max." You look away from Steve for just a second, barely seeing your friend as you look at her. She's chewing on her lip but her hand is gentle, soothing. She believes you can save him, too.

"What's his favorite song?" Eddie asks. He isn't running, he isn't panicking anymore, though he's pale and frantic. Somehow, Nancy's conviction has spread through the room and all of them are ready to save Steve. "Do you know it?"

"Yeah." You look back at Steve's unmoving face and frame it with your hands. "Eagles. 'Peaceful Easy Feeling.'"

"Fuck, that's sure as shit not in my collection." But then Eddie snaps his fingers as the solution comes to him. "Wayne."

"What?" Dustin asks. He moves to Eddie's side and looks up at his friend with desperate eyes, a hand clutching at Eddie's jacket.

"My uncle has that one, I'm sure of it. Henderson --" he looks down at Dustin and claps him on the head -- "go with Wheeler into my room and find my walkman, okay? It'll be on my desk...somewhere."

"Where are Wayne's tapes?" Robin asks. "I'll help you find it." She and Eddie start to tear open covers and empty drawers around you but you barely notice them. Steve's face is dirty in your hands, small cuts dotting his mole-marked skin. The gash around his neck is crusty and weeping a little and you know his entire torso is a mess. You start to cry in earnest, unable to muster the bravery that your friends are showing.

"C'mon baby," you say. "Come back to us. My sweet boy, Steve, come back to me."

Steve is really fucking fed up with all this Upside Down shit happening to him. You go to apologize to the school loner once and all of a sudden an entire hell dimension is ruining your life. What a fucking world.

But right now Steve is more scared than he's ever been, the ugly words from not-you echoing in his mind as he finds himself in his own living room. It's dark in a way that warps real life and it's too quiet. Where are you? Where is everyone? He makes his way to the front door only to find a blank wall. Something about the entryway bugs him, and he realizes that the walls are covered with pictures of his parents. Family photos he's seen before in the boxes in the basement, but in these he's nowhere to be found. And they look happy.

"See how little you matter?" The voice echoes throughout the house, so loud Steve feels like it's going to burst his skull open. "They're not even here. No one is here for you."

"You've got to be fucking kidding me," Steve mutters. His hands are shaking but he knows there is a way out of this. He just has to hold on. Near-blind panic sends him running for the patio door which mercifully opens. But it opens into his backyard covered with vines and black dust, the pool pulsing a dull red. He creeps towards it despite himself, peering over the edge only to see the decaying remains of Barb at the bottom, something he's only ever seen in his nightmares.

Steve screams and backs up, tripping on a root and landing on his back on the stone. The breath rushes out of him and he can't seem to get it back as he gasps.

"You did that," Vecna says. "And for what? A girl who never loved you?" Steve knows it to be true but it shouldn't matter. He carries that around every day and he's learned to live with it. Because now he has you --

"No matter how hard you try, Steve Harrington, no one will love you."

"Not true," Steve pants. "Not fucking true!" He's crying now because he's just so fucking scared and he doesn't want to die, he really doesn't, he wants to get out of here and back to you, back to his friends, he has to so you can finish the plan and save everyone if only he could breathe.

"Why don't you just give up?" Vecna says. His voice is so loud in Steve's head that he thinks his ears are bleeding. "Do you know why there's no one to torment you but me, boy? No warped versions of your parents, your friends, that girl who you left behind? Because no one cares enough. You are alone."

"I get it, I get it!" Steve shouts, annoyance drowning out his fear for just a second. But a second is all it takes because then he sees it -- the mist. Max told him about the mist. He jumps to his feet and starts to run towards it faster than he's ever run in his life. He imagines that he's running home, running towards you, and even when his legs start to ache and his lungs are burning and he's still so damn scared he runs. He knows you're trying to save him. He just needs to keep running.

And then the grass of his yard turns to puddles of red and the sky changes from black to red and everything is red and Steve wants to throw up. It's just so much blood. And in the center of it all is Vecna.

"Holy shit, you're ugly," Steve pants. Fear and adrenaline pulse through his veins and he figures that if he's going to stall, he might as well lean in. "I didn't get any of the warm welcome gifts. Kind of rude, dude. Nosebleeds are cool." Maybe he can annoy Vecna enough that he'll give up.

"I'm in all of your heads, Steve Harrington." Vecna flexes a hand that ends in fingernails so long and sharp Steve swallows at the sight. "The games I play are useful sometimes, but other times it's best to get to the point, don't you think? I can snuff any of you out at any moment. And I will. But you've left your pound of flesh in my world already, so we'll start with you."

Your hands shake as you slide Eddie's headphones onto Steve and hit play on the cassette. If any song was going to work it was going to be this one. It's the song Steve puts on when you're driving together, the song you listen to after you have a nightmare and stay up talking until the morning about the future, the song that was playing when you told him you loved him for the first time. A part of you that is pure fear wonders if it'll be enough, if you're about to watch the world end here in Eddie's trailer, if you're about to watch Steve die.

Your heartbeat is loud in your ears but you can hear the tinny sound of the Eagles and Dustin's heaving breaths and the occasional sob coming from one of you, you don't know who. And then Steve starts to lift into the air ever-so slowly and a scream is ripped from you. You hurl out of Robin's embrace where you were clutching each other and wrap yourself around Steve's waist.

If he's going to go, he's going to do it in your arms. You won't let his last moments be anywhere else.

But Dustin is quick behind you, grabbing Steve's legs and then Robin and Nancy and Eddie follow, keeping him from crashing into the trailer ceiling. Everyone is crying, holding on with all of their strength, and you know that this might be it.

"I love you, Steve!" you shout. "I love you! Come back! Fight him!" Who knows if he can hear you, but you have to try. You have to try.

"I love you, man," Dustin sobs. "I love you!"

"You're my best friend, Steve!" Robin screams through her tears. "I love you. Get back here!"

"Come on Steve," Nancy cries. "Come back!"

"You gotta come back, Harrington," Eddie says. "Get the fuck back here! We love you!"

Steve is pretty sure this might be the end, actually. He sure as hell tried but damn, those vines are fast. He's pinned to a pole that is slimy and really irritating the shit out of his already fucked neck and he's trying not to look at the three other bodies around him. Max doesn't seem to be there, which is a small comfort. How did she get out of here? If he somehow manages to worm his way back to life he's going to tell her that she's the bravest person she knows.

"Let go, Steve Harrington. You're not needed there." Vecna takes his time as he stalks forward, long nails dragging through the red. "They're fine without you. They're better without you."

Steve blinks and suddenly the deconstructed house from hell is gone and he sees something else entirely. Something that punches the breath out of him and makes him sag into the vines. It's the kids messing around in a park. They're all there, even Eleven and Will, and they're happy. And, well shit, there's you and Robin. Everyone is safe. Everyone is laughing and he doesn't know how he knows but he knows that in this world where no one is harmed, where there aren't any monsters, where he doesn't exist. Because what purpose would he serve if there was nothing to protect you from?

"No purpose. You're finally getting it," Vecna hisses and the vision fades. The smell if iron and decay fills Steve's nostrils once more. "So why don't we make that a reality? Get some rest, Steve Harrington."

For a second, just one second, Steve considers it. He's so tired. Everything hurts and he wants to close his eyes for just a second. He tried to protect everyone, he tried to protect you, but he failed. So what's the point?

You. He lets himself imagine your face, your eyes and your cheekbones. Your smile when you see him, your laugh when he cracks a stupid joke. The warmth of your hands on his face. Come on, Steve, he can almost hear you say. Come back. He wiggles his fingers. It feels like the vine is a little looser than he thought. He repaints the scene Vecna showed him, placing himself next to you. He thinks about Robin, her hand on his back when she hugs him and how she calls him when she can't sleep. He thinks about Dustin and their handshake and the polaroid you took of them that he keeps on his dresser. He thinks about Lucas and Erica and how they both like the exact same kind of pizza but Lucas gives her the last piece every time. He thinks about Mike and Nancy and how they forgave him, how they keep forgiving him. He thinks about Max. About the letter in his glove compartment. How he never, ever intends to have to read it, but how he needs to be the one to tell her so. And Steve thinks about you.

I love you, Steve, you say. I love you so much.

Wait a second. He actually hears you. You're screaming his name and is that...the Eagles?

"Steve!" Your voice thunders through the Upside Down and it's that more than the music that shocks Vecna. The vines slack just enough for Steve to drop to the ground, his knees smacking painfully into the stone and coating him in red. He scrambles to his feet and doesn't think twice before he starts running. He doesn't know where he's going, but your voice is loud in his ears, the music alongside it.

And I want to sleep with you in the desert night

With a billion stars all around

"And she dumped the entire drink on his head!" Steve chuckles from his spot in your lap and you yawn. It's almost morning and the radio is soft in the background. Sleep eluded him tonight, and you stayed up and talked until his mind was no longer darkness and death.

"You must be exhausted, I'm sorry," he starts but you press your fingers over his lips.

"Nope," you say. "Can't hear you. No apology zone. Plus, they always play the best stuff at night for the truckers." Steve reaches over to turn the volume up and it's that Eagles song he's caught you humming a few times. You do the same now and run your fingers through his hair and his eyelids start to close. He's safe and you're here. He's okay.

Cause I get a peaceful easy feeling'

And I know you won't let me down

"Again?" you say as Steve turns the dial on the radio. "This song is always playing when I get in the car."

"Cause I call in and ask for it." He pulls out of your driveway and heads towards Dustin's house. "I know you like it."

"Really?" He knows you were just joking but he wasn't. Well, the first time was coincidence, but after he saw how you lit up he's called a few times to make it happen again.

"Maybe." He smirks. "You'll never know. Maybe my car is just magic." You reach over and pull his hand from the steering wheel to smack a kiss on his palm. He feels his cheeks heat and the way you're looking at him might just make him crash the car. "What?"

"You're magic, Steve Harrington."

'Cause I'm already standin'

On the ground

"Did you hear what I said?" The diner is nearly empty but you speak quietly anyway. Steve holds the fry he was about to eat a few inches from his face, his hand frozen in mid-air. It's just a regular Friday night and you look beautiful in this awful lighting, makeup a little smeared from the party you've left, eyes wide as you wait for him to answer.

"Shit. Yeah, I heard you." You've only just rocked his entire world and made his heart beat so fast he's a little concerned it might burst out of his chest . He drops the fry and grabs your hand from the sticky table. "Can you say it again, just to make sure?" He knows he's grinning like an idiot and it must spur you on.

"I love you, Steve." He promises himself that whatever happens in his life, he's going to remember this moment. Because it's a perfect one.

"Yeah, that's what I thought you said." He winks at you and then he realizes what's playing on the diner radio. "Do you hear what song is playing?" You frown at him and he laughs, bringing your hand to his lips so he can kiss it. "It's the Eagles, baby. Our song. I didn't even call it in this time!"

"Steve--"

"Oh, sorry," he says. "I love you, too." Your smile is like the sun.

The memories sweep over him unbidden but they keep him going until he sees the impossible right in front of him: himself in the air and you, Robin, Nancy, Eddie, and Dustin clinging to him and shouting how much you love him, how much you need him. His eyes leak hot tears because he wants this to be over so badly and it looks like he might make it. He's loved and he's needed and he's going to fucking make it.

"C'mon, Harrington," he begs himself, one foot in front of the other as he hurtles towards the vision and --

Steve crashes to the floor and takes you all with him in a pile of limbs and tears and gasping. He opens his eyes and sees you first, your nose inches from his own before you collapse into him. Warm hands press onto his arms, his chest, his legs, and everyone talks at once.

"Steve, thank Christ--"

"--God bless the Eagles, man --"

"--Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god--"

"--We love you so much, Steve, never do that again--"

"--I'm gonna murder Vecna so hard--"

And you, loudly sobbing into his chest, planting kisses on every part of him you can reach. "I love you," you whimper. "I love you so much."

"You guys," he croaks, and everyone falls silent apart from the sniffling. He looks around at your relieved faces and he can't believe Vecna made him think for even a second that he didn't belong here. "How did you--" He can't finish the thought. Robin clutches his hand like a lifeline and sags into Nancy's side. Dustin smiles so big Steve can see every one of his teeth.

Eddie's hand claps him on the shoulder. "The power of love, man. Well, and the Eagles."

Steve thuds his head on the ground, closing his eyes and breathing in deep, tasting the stale air of the trailer. "Fuck," he says. He feels for the most part like none of it happened -- his legs don't burn, his clothes are clean. A few tears escape but otherwise he'd have thought it was all a bad dream, but he's never been that lucky. Your weight on his chest is grounding, though it brings back the dull throbbing of his various wounds.

"Can we get off the floor?" he asks. Everyone scrambles off of him immediately and you and Robin haul him to his feet. She slides in to give him a embrace and kiss on the cheek, eyes watery as he smiles at her. He sways a bit as she jostles him but manages to stay upright, your hand tight around his wrist. No one says anything but he feels all of your eyes on him. "Christ, guys." He goes for a joke and misses by a mile. "Stop looking at me like I died."

"Too soon, man," Dustin mutters. "Shit." Steve shrugs and reaches out to pat the boy on the head.

"Sorry," he says, sheepish. He looks at you, your hand still attached to him like you're afraid he's going to float away. Which, well, he can't exactly blame you for. You keep yourself as close to him as you can, eyes red and wide as you search his face for something. You're desperate to ask him how he is but don't know if he even knows.

"Let's all take a breather, okay?" Nancy suggests, eyeing the two of you. "Steve, sit down or something. Dustin, let's radio everyone and tell them to standby. We need to regroup and fast." She pulls Dustin with her to Eddie's room with the radio, a hand on Steve's arm as she passes him. The look between them speaks volumes, conveys everything they can't articulate. It's a look you know and understand and it gives you confidence that things will be fine. And, fuck, Steve is glad she was here to help. She'll know what to do next.

"Let's get everyone some water," Eddie mutters and crowds Robin into the kitchenette to give you and Steve some semblance of privacy as you pull him to sit on the ground by the front door.

You realize you're gripping him so hard he's going to bruise and you loosen your hold, sliding down to weave your fingers together. Did all of that really just happen?

"Steve, I --" you start but he interrupts you.

"Are you okay?" he says softly. "Your hands are still shaking." Your lips part in disbelief.

"How the fuck are you asking me that?" You reach out with your free hand and gently wipe away the tear tracks from his face. "I'm not the one who was just cursed!"

"Yeah, well," he croaks. "It didn't take. I've got nine lives or something." Your hand on his face seems to crack through the numbness, the shock, and he starts to shake. "We have to keep going. He can get to any of us, he said, at any time, what if he comes back for someone else--"

He reaches for you and you go willingly, climbing into his lap right there in the trailer, Eddie and Robin muttering feet away. You don't care. You have to touch him, to hold him. "Steve. Hey, we're gonna get him. We're going to figure it out." He buries his face in your neck, hands coming around you a little too tight but you don't care. You almost lost him, he almost died.

"I can't believe I got out," he whispers. "It was so...it was the freakiest shit I've ever seen. Thank you for--"

"Don't thank me for saving your life Steve," you say as you press kisses to his temple. "You got yourself out and we helped. You're Steve Harrington. You're brave and you're good and you made it. And I love you." There will be time later to talk about what he saw, to work on healing the old wounds Vecna opened. But first you're going to rip him limb from limb.

"Yeah," he says. "I know." And he does know. Your voice is stronger than the lingering echoes of Vecna in his mind. God, he loves you.

He loosens his hold on you and takes a deep breath before pushing it all down for later. "Okay, we have to figure out what's next." The crackle of the radio is loud enough that you can all hear it, hear Dustin furiously telling the Creel unit to regroup as you figure out your next steps. You move out of his lap but not far from him, hands still intertwined as everyone returns to the main room.

"Hey Nance," Steve says, a small smirk on this face, eyes hard as steel. "Think I can get a turn with the shotgun when we find this fucker?" Without warning Eddie bursts into laughter that spreads to the rest of you. It's a little unhinged, a little hysterical, but it fits.

"God damn, Harrington," he says. "Thank Christ we have you."
