A concept i wish digimon would explore more is showing a digimon’s psychology and morals through evolution. Like have a utilitarian digimon who does horrible things but doesnt dark digivolve bc they genuinely believe they are morally correct (i would love it if one of the angel digimon did this just to hone this concept in). Like they’ll do brutal unethical experimentations but handwaves it off as “its for the greater good”.
Or do the opposite where a digimon dark digivolves bc they genuinely believe they are the worst when in reality they are probably one of the more morally righteous characters (i think fusion explored this a bit with beelzemon).
Like i think it would be pretty funny if the digimon with bright vibrant colors and angelic wings was killing baby digimon but the digimon with dark colors and a scary design was like volunteering at a food shelter

A Dragon in Shining Armour's anniversary
I completely forgot this year, but now that I've been reminded, happy 13th anniversary to ADiSA! I can't believe it's been that long...
I usually like to take this chance to give a little update on the story.
As I've mentioned in the last post, I'm about halfway through the next chapter. I'm picking away at it a little almost every day.
There's about ten chapters left. By this time next year, I'm really hoping that I'll, at the very least, be 90% done. If not completed, then at least a chapter or two away. I'm gonna try to hold myself to that.
I really want to thank you all for your continued support and also your patience. I realize that Holy War is very long, and I'm not churning a chapter out every three weeks like I used to several years ago. I'm really grateful to everyone who's still reading for sticking with me. Whether it's reviews, comments, questions, likes, follows, fanart, or any other creative endeavours, I really appreciate all of your support.
A big thanks from me, Griff. Knowing there are people out there who enjoy what I'm writing is a big motivator. We're in the homestretch now, and I'm excited to see Holy War through to its end. I hope you all enjoy the ride.
Sincerely,
Griff

The Digimon Fandom's Obsession with Crests
Tumblr media
Let me vent a bit about one thing that kinda annoys me within the Digimon fandom. The obsession with crests. Digimon OCs - no matter whether they are for the Adventure-verse, any other canonical verse, or something original - will often come equipped with a crest. And even characters from any of the other seasons will often have fan-made crests for a variety of fanfics. Crests for Takato, Jianliang and Ruki. Crests for Takuya and Co.. Crests for all the Goggle Boys.
And I am honest: I kinda hate it.
Now, I make no secret out of the fact that I hate the crests both as a concept, as well as the way it was implemented in the show. A couple years back I had a talk with Nishizono about this (the head writer for Adventure) and he somewhat got my criticisms and spoke about how much of an issue it was to actually do this within the show.
I like the other concept they focused on in Adventure: Make the main characters children with "real world problems" (like divorce, adoption, problems communicating with parents and such). That was a nice concept for this. But the crests? Well, I do not think they work very well.
The issue with the concept
Tumblr media
My issue with the concept is most easily explained with the same issue that a lot of folks pointed out about the House System in Harry Potter. (Look, I hate HP by now, but the issue is very well explained with this.) They put a kid into a house for 7 years based on who they are at age 11. Kids change. A kid who is "brave" and stubborn at age 11, can become studious later. Yeah, yeah, I know, Rowling does not do character development, but realistically it is like that.
Same goes for the crests.
See, the crest are supposed to be the strongest positive trait of the children. There is another problem with this in regards to implementation - but I will come to this in a moment. For now the issue is the concept itself.
The first issue to me is, that I find it very reductive to reduce someone's positive to one trait. I am sorry, but I do not like it to reduce complex characters into that one trait. And I also think that in some ways it has hindered the writing in Adventure a lot that they always had to focus the character arcs around this one thing, which definitely hindered them.
But then there is the other thing: The kids were chosen in 1995 during the Hikarigaoka incident. When they were between 3 and 8 years old. And kids develop super fast. A kid who is seven or right is very different from whom they were at ages three of four. A kid in fifth grade is also very different from a kid in first or second grade.
Now, the latter part is used as an actual point of conflict in the novels to some degree. ("Yeah, actually we struggle with the crests, because we are no longer the persons who we were four years ago.") But the show does not really work this out, and as such it just seems... so forced to push the kids into those traits.
The problem with the implementation
Tumblr media
The other issue is the implementation. This starts with the fact, that a) not all the supposed "traits" are not really character traits, and b) that they struggle with cultural context.
Let me explain.
Courage or Bravery can be considered a character trait. Friendship and Love though? Those are emotions but not character traits. Knowledge is also not really a trait. This should actually be curiosity or something. After all it is always curiosity that triggers Koshiro's crest. Purity/Sincerity are a trait. But the main issue is that the way this is depicted is very much rooted in Buddhist mythology - which obviously just did not translate into international dubs. Reliability is a trait, that is fine. Hope is not quite one, though I guess "hopefulness" does count. And then there is... Light. Which is not a trait or even a character trait.
Now, Hikari having the crest of light is apparently rooted in Hikari being there being based on executive meddling. (Long story short: Originally there were just six planned characters, then Mimi was added to have another girl in the group, which ironically worked out well, because she accidentally got written really well. But then it was very last minute decided that Hikari would be the "sixth ranger" stereotype. And Nishizono at least did not want this, because the show to him was too crowded. He could not change it, but in protest he kinda did as little with her as a character as he could get away with. And thus her crest is just "hikari", her name.)
I personally do not like a lot of the stuff that Kakudou decided for Adventure/02 I might note - I will not go into the why here, but it is something I want to say. However, even though this was probably a result of hindsight, the novel he and Misaki wrote on Adventure definitely did improve the implementation of the crests through the aforementioned thing: Very clearly implying that the kids had trouble activating them due to not being who they were when they were younger.
The other part is, that at times I feel that really the crests and their traits stand in the way of good character arcs. I would argue, that at large the crests work well for Taichi, Joe, and Mimi. Now, I will be one more person who notes that it makes very little sense that Mimi needs for so long to activate her crests, because she is very sincere and pure in everything she does. In the novel she already gets the activation at the Gekomon castle - and yes, there I very much agree with the novels: This is what should have happened. While I love her crest activation episode in the show, I think for her it is too late.
Meanwhile Koshiro again has the issue that his trait is actually curiosity, not knowledge. And indeed, it is always his curiosity that activates the crest. But if we just say "yes it is curiosity", then why does it activate so late?
Yamato and Sora meanwhile have very little traits in Adventure that bind them to the idea of the crest. Yamato is the worst friend out of the Adventure-crew. I am sorry, but there it is. Now, if we had used that as a conflict of him hence struggling to regularly activate his crest, this would have been interesting. But... that is not what happens.
With Sora meanwhile Love is a very vague idea. Sure, it is about a platonic love like in family, but it is very vague and just is not worked with a whole lot. I honestly think of all character arcs in Adventure hers is the one that works least - mostly due to her conflict being set up so very late and then gets connected to the trait with the ironbar method.
Takeru is complicated. Because I think the main issue with him is that he is very young still - and as such for half the show gets reduced to the little brother role, due to which he has so little development of his own.
Well, and Hikari in Adventure very much is a non-character, who only gets to be a full-fledged character in 02.
Generally speaking, I do think that generally the concept of the crests did hinder the writing of Adventure in a lot of ways and made the character arcs a lot more complicated to write, than they wouldh have been before. Which is why I really hate to see that so many folks writing about Digimon in any way, try to force in some kind of Crest mechanic.
Sure, the crest designs are nice and something fun to work with, but... like, we can come up with better ideas, right?
I dunno. I am really annoyed with this. I am honest.

Digimon Headcanons
Haven't really ever written these down but here are some of my random headcanons...
1. The partner digimon grow up alongside their partners, instead of staying the same size while the humans get bigger. The older / more mature a digimon gets, the larger they are- a newly evolved agumon is going to be a bit smaller than an older agumon.
2. (Refer to 1) Gabumon is the largest of all the partner digimon, and full grown, comes up to Yamato's shoulder (excluding their horn). They're not extremely tall, but their body is large / dinosaur-like. Agumon is the same way, but a little shorter. I'd imagine they're both 200 to 250 lbs? Idk.
3. Digimon keep scars from battle. For example, if Piyomon gets an injury as Garudamon, she'll only have the scar when she's Garudamon, not when she devolves to Piyomon.
4. Digimon actually reproduce, although it's not super common. After all, if a digimon gets permanently deleted and doesn't return, then eventually there'll be none left.
5. When a digimon dies, they leave a body behind, and it's only their soul / data that gets reincarnated. But for special cases, like Angemon against Devimon, they disintegrate completely (Angemon used all their data for their final attack against Devimon, and it included destroying the data of their own body). This means that Digimon can eat other digimon.
6. (Relates to 5) During the Chosen's original adventures, their partners would occasionally hunt other digimon in order to get supplies, whether it be furs to keep the kids warm / make clothes or last-resort food if there was nothing to scavenge
7. Mimi gets pretty good at cutting hair. Taichi still won't let her touch his hair, and instead ties it half-up in a ponytail when it gets too long. She and Taichi did braid Yamato's hair in his sleep once (only with Gabumon's permission of course)
8. The Chosen's adventure lasts 5 years- 3 years from the start of their adventure to Vamdemon / where they return to the real world, then once they return to the digital world, they spend 2 years fighting the dark masters. Their bodies grow up during this time to young adulthood, but revert to their 9-13 year old bodies during the Vamdemon arc. When they return to the digital world they are once again young adults. At the end of their adventure, they choose to stay with their digimon and make their lives in the Digital World, much to Gennai's dismay.
9. Yamato has little holes and cuts on his gloves- more so than the other's (wear and tear, etc), and small scars on his fingers from using knives and cooking food for the group. He's a decent cook at the beginning of their adventures, but still needs a bit of practice. He's only 12 at the beginning of their adventure, and over the next 5 years he grows to be a much better cook.
10. Jyou is (naturally) the group's doctor. When the Chosen return to the real world, Jyou makes sure to pack up on medical supplies, and steals his brother's medical college textbooks, anything he might find useful. If there's a book on burns, breaks and injuries, he'll take it. He may or may not have shop lifted a CVS or two. Heck, all these kids pilfer stores in the real world, they get good at sneaking around. Yamato (steals) brings small spice packs in a carry on bag that he can use when cooking fish, any meat the digimon bring back from hunting.
11. Everyone gets their fair share of injuries- Taichi loses a finger or two, Yamato gets slashed across the face (he's lucky he didn't lose an eye, according to Jyou), Sora gets a pretty nasty gash in her leg at one point, Koushirou dislocates his arm, Takeru gets a pretty bad concussion, Hikari gets ill on more than one occasion, Jyou's foot gets impaled (giant thorn? Idk. He has to treat it himself and that's not fun. He walks Sora through doing stitches), and Mimi breaks a couple ribs. Other than these, the occasional scratch or twisted ankle happens every so often.
12. The Chosen have a designated bath and wash day, and all of them spend a day bathing / washing their clothes / fur blankets, etc. Jyou uses this day as a 'checkup' day to make sure no one has any injuries they're hiding (implemented after Koushirou tried to hide a nasty bruise on his ankle. He didn't want to bother anyone about it). When everyone and their partners are bathing, Gabumon sits to the side and watches over everyone / stands guard. May or may not be jealous of the others bathing with their partners, but would rather stay dry. Plus, Yamato is the only person they'll allow to see them without their fur.
Okay that's all I can think of for now, but maybe I'll do another Headcanons post! This was fun and at least I have some written down now.
:)

Happy Halloween, Koushiro!
I uploaded a drabble I wrote ages ago to AO3, but crucially, with a drawing of Koushiro's Halloween costume. LOOK AT THE HANDSOME LAD. It's under 700 words and features Koushiro, Mimi, and Taichi.
I try to write something really heartfelt for Koushiro week, but I just had so much going on this year. If you're looking for something like that, please check out Ladybug House or Sans San!
Happy Koushiro week, and happy Halloween! Love you!

Digivice D-Node (デジヴァイス デノド)
The D-Node digivice is a special device that connects the human potential of its bearer with the digimon it is linked to. The connection between both individuals can be bidirectional: The digimon can channel the tamer's energy, while the human can be affected by the digimon's potential.
Beyond its analog design, it is a device resistant to extreme situations such as high temperatures, sudden falls or water. It does not need to recharge its battery, the power source comes from the digimon it is associated with, making it a useless device if it is not linked to someone or the digimon dies.
The use of the device is exclusive, being for a single bearer. Among its practical functions, beyond channeling energy, it can be used for various purposes such as radar, communication or encyclopedia among others.
Tumblr media
The digivice belongs to an original story that I am preparing and I hope to share soon, I hope you like it!

Takuya from Spark Fire Inferno, a digimon fanfiction, is canonically plural. He is sharing his body with Vritramon and Agnimon. They each take turn piloting the body and act in very different ways when they front. archiveofourown. org/works/15669015

For the requests thing, may I ask for "Tracing the other's lips with their finger" for Taiora?
+ Cold feet warming each other up under the blanket requested by @sohemotional
SURPRISE! Just me sliding in with this fic 2 months later like everything's normal hehehe~
This was one of those fics, which after I wrote it I thought it didn't make sense at all, but I just needed to let some time pass and revisit it to see what worked and what didn't. It doesn't have smut in it, but it is implied. I just can't write the more explicit scenes so I gloss over it with metaphors lol.
Hope you enjoy reading it!

At the first crack of dawn, her eyes fluttered open, the soft, pinkish sunlight danced across the room, tainting it with its bright hues which made her eyes crinkle under the strain. This shouldn’t be happening, Sora thought, as neither she nor Taichi were known to wake up this early. As she felt more awake, she could make out the weight of Taichi’s arm draped across her waist, his head resting close to her collarbone as he slept peacefully, unbothered by the sunlight now a sharp orange flooding their room.
Sora turned her head and the reason behind the sun’s invasion greeted her without any defence.
Taichi had forgotten to close the blinds again last night.
She sighed, bringing one hand to her face to massage her temples.
Moving in together was proving to have a few more challenges than she had anticipated.
Only a month had passed since they’d made the shift and while Sora did enjoy the novelty of turning a house into a home together with someone she loved, there were still quite a few things that the two of them could not seem to find common ground on. She didn’t want to see their differences in a negative light, rather think of them as something that helped them understand each other even better.
But there were still moments when her patience was tested.
Taichi always slept like a baby, bright lights or loud noises rarely served as a disruption to him. Sora, however, was different, she needed the room to be fully dark to fall asleep, the only sounds allowed were that of her own breath, and now Taichi’s. Since Taichi usually came home after her, he’d often turn on a lamp or open the curtain blinds to look at the city view before he headed to bed. She didn’t mind if he left the lamp on, since even if she was asleep, she’d still pick up on the light and wake up to turn it off before settling back. But with the blinds it wasn’t the same, and her sleep would always get interrupted the minute sunlight started to pour in.
Today happened to be the third time this had happened in two weeks.
She tried to be discreet in her attempt to slip out from under Taichi so she could get up and close the blinds. But her efforts were wasted as the minute she started to wiggle, his grip around her waist tightened and he shifted to press himself closer to her.
“Don’t wake up yet, Sor. It’s a Sunday.” He muttered drowsily in her ear as he raised his head from her neck and rested his forehead against hers.
She rolled her eyes, biting her tongue to keep herself from replying haughtily. She put her hands on his chest with the hope of pushing him away by force and just for a moment she believed it was working, but that was a mistake. Taichi was just waiting for her to let her guard down so he could ambush her by grabbing their blanket and covering them both with it snugly from head to toe. It was hard not to relish in the warmth he brought with him as he moved closer, rubbing her feet with his own to chase away the cold along with any motivation she’d had up until then to leave the bed.
“You left the blinds open again, Taichi,” Sora said, though her voice was all muffled with the blanket covering them and Taichi’s big head hovering above her face. She wanted to sound upset, but with the heat enveloping them it was impossible to not sound dizzy, “I can’t go back to sleep until I close them, so please get off me.”
“Oops.” Taichi replied, with not the slightest hint of guilt in his voice. He lowered the blanket to glance towards the window, once he confirmed that she was right, he sent her a sheepish grin, “Sorry about that.”
He didn’t bury them under the blanket again, but in a flash he shifted to lie right on top of her, locking her down on the bed by pressing his weight onto her.
“But I’m sure you can go back to sleep if you try.” He was teasing her now, which meant that he was fully awake too so at least it wasn’t just Sora who was forced to sacrifice her sleep at this hour.
“No, I can’t.” Sora squeaked under the sudden pressure of his weight. They’d had this conversation almost every time Taichi made this mistake, so Sora was compelled to act more stubborn than usual. “So if you just-” she heaved, still trying to push him away with all the strength she could put in her palms, “get off me, I can go close the blinds and we can both go back to sleep peacefully.”
“Are you sure about that, though?” Taichi asked again, easily lowering himself onto her so she would know that she didn’t have the chance to win in a battle of strength. Resting his forehead against hers once again, he looked directly into her eyes and smirked as if he’d won, “Have you ever tried?”
“Y-yes.” Sora managed to speak even as she felt her whole body tremble at the warmth he infected her with. It was difficult to maintain eye contact with Taichi without blushing, so she decided to lower her gaze and it fell at his lips, another wrong move on her end since now she was incapable of stringing together a proper sentence, “I-i’ve trrr-ied ma-ny times.”
“I see.” Taichi replied in a low voice that made her toes curl. He looked pleased at the sight of colour rushing to her cheeks, he brought a hand to her face and caressed it softly before winking at her. "But you didn’t have me to help you with it then.”
“How could you possibly-”
The rest of her question died in her throat when Taichi lifted a finger and pressed it to her lips. He waited for a moment, making sure that Sora had fully given up on retaliating, before he traced the finger across her lips, which parted without hesitation at his touch like a lock clicking open for the right key.
“Close your eyes.”
She did as she was told when she felt Taichi’s lips press against hers.
The sunlight flooding their room, the open window blinds, all of that became irrelevant in her mind as Taichi’s hands travelled from her cheeks to her neck, then across her chest and down to her waist. It felt as if her skin was melting in the spots that he touched and yet she couldn’t get enough of it, wanting for him to keep going until she was nothing but a puddle of bliss. She was grateful that she didn’t need to speak this out loud and he knew exactly what she wanted. When she felt him smirk against her lips, for a moment Sora did want to pull herself together for the sake of her pride, but then his fingers looped around the hem of her underwear before sliding in without hesitation. Her mind went blank and the only thing she was aware of was Taichi, and the satisfying happiness he granted her with just a flick of his finger.
Sora quite naturally lost track of time as she accepted her defeat and gave in to the pleasure of Taichi’s touch. Before long, she felt her body relax deeper into the mattress and with the end of her blissful release came the exhaustion, from now and from the day before, pushing her towards a slumber so deep, something she hadn’t thought was possible until she let herself fall victim to it.
When Sora finally woke up several hours later around noon, she couldn’t believe that not only was their room was flooded with light, Taichi was out blasting music throughout the house while running the vacuum cleaner at full throttle. She slowly pulled herself up, eyes now fully open and her mouth slightly hanging ajar as she asked herself, had she really slept through all of that?
“Good morning, Sora!” Taichi appeared in the doorway, as if sensing that she was awake. He hadn’t bothered to lower the music though, so he practically had to shout his greeting as he grinned at her, “How’d you sleep?”
Sora pursed her lips together as she felt her cheeks turn red under his cheeky gaze, of course he knew that she’d slept well, all thanks to him but admitting that out loud would just give him the support he needed to get his way all through the week or even month.
“I slept fine,” she said, carefully picking her words.
“The light didn’t bother you? Or what about the music, I know you hate this band so much-”
Taichi wouldn’t be Taichi if he didn’t push all her buttons until the very end.
Sora brought her hands to her face covering them as she groaned in defeat, “Fine, fine! I slept like a baby and you were right. I have you to help me now.”
“Why, thank you for the compliment. Glad to be of service, love you too.”
With a final smug look thrown in her direction, Taichi sauntered away into their living room, after a few minutes both the loud music and vacuum cleaner were turned off. Sora shook her head as she dressed herself under the covers, so he really had turned those on to prove a point, did Taichi even get any cleaning done after all? As she stepped into the living room and rolled her eyes at the sight that greeted her, Sora thought that wanting to understand each other better came with the realisation that some things about her and Taichi would never change, but that did not mean that either of them had to give up trying.
So if Taichi could get her to fall asleep against all odds, surely a day would come when Sora would be able to get him to use their vacuum cleaner correctly.
After all both were just a matter of putting his fingers to good use.

Tw: mental illness
Ok so my headcanon is that takeru will outlive the other chosen children but will get alzheimer's in his mid 60s early 70s. Patamon will take care of him but his heart will break every time takeru doesnt recognize him and forgets all of the adventures they had. When the other chosen children were alive, they would help as much as they could, but eventually they all passed away. Patamon will read takeru his published books but takeru wont remember them, thinking the nice caretaker is just reading him a fun story. Something that gives patamon comfort is when old takeru tells him every single time that his favorite digimon from the story is patamon, but finds it funny how takeru’s favorite human character isnt himself (he will often change who his favorite character is depending on where in the story patamon reads). Whenever yamato is mentioned in the books (whom he has little memory of) it always seems like it sparks something within him, but he can never recall. Patamon might take him to primary village once in a while, and every time takeru will get so gleefully happy and excited, like the first time he went there as a kid.

Today is the day. Today is the day I finally realize why I have a whole box filled with Tokyo street maps collected over 25 years.
Turns out especially a city like Tokyo shifts a lot over 25 years. And I have a reference for the streets in 2010 now.
Me, overdoing fanfic research? I would never!
