Gabriel Lightwood, alone in a house with his father going mad, heartbroken at his brother leaving him, trapped by the Consul's blackmail, unable to let anyone know. Cecily Herondale, losing both her siblings in a matter of days, growing up alone and having to learn to repair the cracks left behind by her brother leaving, being angry at him for not thinking their family was worth it, unable to let anyone know. Sophie Collins, only a servant, her only wish to be a Shadowhunter being one which can never come true because she has a debt to repay, in love with a man with whom it can never work out, unable to let anyone know. Charlotte Branwell, her only desire to influence and help and protect being mocked and crushed by men, in love with a man that looks at her as a friend, unable to let anyone know. Henry Branwell, knowing things work different than what he's been taught, knowing he is right but cannot possibly explain and will always be laughed at as insane, in love with a woman that married him for convenience, unable to let anyone know.

The Infernal Devices understood loneliness like no other book I've read, the bone deep sense of being utterly alone even when surrounded by people.

There is literally no Ship Type I like more than the Healing Ship. When both characters have experienced trauma and/or grief. And they're a little jagged around the edges, but they don't love each other despite that. They love each other's jagged edges, because they love every part of each other. And that doesn't fix the trauma, but it means having unconditional support and comfort

Cassandra Clare LOVES the grew-up-too-soon x babied-all-their-life trope

Clary was sheltered up until the events of TCOB meanwhile Jace was getting raised by Valentine

Kit was forced to grow up quickly while Ty was babied by Julian and his family

Sophie was cast out onto the streets while Gideon had a fairly nice upbringing (besides his dad turning into a worm but let's face it he deserved it)

Lucie was raised as the daughter of one of the wealthiest Shadowhunter families while Jesse literally died as a kid

And do I even need to explain Thomas and Alastair...

literally just woke up one day and thought "i will spend the next few days drawing the entire cast of the infernal devices". and then i did! much time was spent looking at grainy pictures of late 1870s fashion plates.

ive been wanting to draw everyone together for a long time now so im glad i finally got to it <3 still an absolute favourite series of mine ⚙️🪽

Just remembered how Grace had men in her life wanting her for her beauty and never bothering to know about her other qualities and Christopher Lightwood being the first man who admired her for her intelligence and her brain and Sophie after her scar said that now she will know who loves her truly and how Gideon Lightwood told her that he admired for her character, bravery and her beauty. Oh Lightwood men you will always be loved by men.

just got to the sophideon proposal scene in clockwork princess and wow. gideon's declaration beforehand, henry asking which one of benedict's friends gideon was going to marry, gabrily eavesdropping, gideon's apology and sophie correcting him that he hadn't proposed, gabriel's happiness when sophie corrects him, gideon's proposal, sophie asking him if he had practiced it and gideon using the word extemporaneous, their kiss being broken up by bridget singing about a couple who got married and died two days later, sophie saying she's going to murder her and correcting herself to call him gideon instead of mr lightwood. nobody did it like them.

Something about Sophie and Alastair both being survivors of sexual abuse (Teddy & Charles) and finding solace in the awkward-but-kind nonthreatening comfort of Gideon and Thomas. Something about how Sophie raised Thomas to be exactly the man she could have felt safe around, and something about how Alastair did in fact feel that safety

Oh wait. I just realized Thomas Lightwood was named after Thomas Tanner (the institute's servant who died in clockwork angel ) AND they have the same build.
