Okay so I've shared this page before, saying how Kaneki comes off really Asexual when he says this, since he's prioritizing other features of her besides physical. But I'm realizing now, just how passive he says this too. Like not only is her beauty not the only reason, but its far from the top reason, maybe even irrelevant to his interest in her.

And then, this read I'm realizing that he also comes off as really Aromantic.

Like, his idea of a date... It sounds more like he just wants a book club buddy to hang out with.

Like, "give each other novel recommendations"? That's extremely basic. Not even "discuss the deep reasons why we connect to these particular books to learn more about each other"?

Poor guy just wants some book nerd friends.

Even the image in his head looks like he's out book shopping with Rize, no hint of anything specifically romantic in sight.

And yet he's so genuinely emotional over this. Even using phrasing that you would think he's talking about a more stereotypically romantic date.

And this is exactly what they do on the real date, too! Give each other book reccomendations and chat about Takatsuki's various works!

Make Up Date

Hide takes Kaneki on a date, to make him feel loved after his disastrous first date with Rize.

“Come on, let me take you on a date! Please!”

Hide had been begging this every day since his release from the hospital. Thinking it was a joke he wasn’t getting, Kaneki kept denying. But Hide kept asking, and Kaneki was beginning to think he was completely serious.

“Why does this matter to you?” Kaneki asked.

Hide didn’t like him, right? If he did, this was a real strange way to confess.

Hide’s smile turned gentle. “Because your first date ended up so awful. You don’t deserve that. And I can’t see you wanting to ask anyone else out anytime soon, so let me take you out!”

“You don’t have to do that. I’m fine.”

“Of course I don’t have to, but I want to. It’ll be fun for me too!”

“Okay, fine. But no dinner dates.”

Hide grimaced, likely remembering what happened at Big Girl. “Yeah, sure. No problem. We can do something else. How about a bookstore date, and then we see a movie together? If you’re up for it we could eat a bunch of junk food, but if you’re not, then the movie will be just as good with no snacks.”

“Okay. I’m in.”

Hide already had a plan in mind. In fact, in the week Kaneki kept denying, Hide had just built onto his original plan.

He’d dressed nicely. He brought flowers. He brought a cute little package of chocolates. He met Kaneki after his classes, complimenting his appearance even though Kaneki hadn’t dressed up, and walked him to the bookstore. He held his hand the whole time and stood close, affectionately leaning on him. He kissed his hand a few times, even going for a peck on the cheek once or twice. He planned and did everything romantic he could think of. Even the “stretch and not-so-discreetly put your arm around your partner” move during the movie, as cliché as it probably was.

It was the perfect plan for making Kaneki feel special and loved.

But Kaneki was really awkward the whole time. At first, Hide just thought it was nerves. He gave it some time for Kaneki to adjust to their date. But he never did, and he just seemed to be growing more and more uncomfortable as the night went on. He gradually toned down the romance, trying to hit a sweet spot in Kaneki’s comfort zone, but Kaneki kept giving off vibes of being uncomfortable. Hide knew Kaneki wouldn’t speak up for himself, so Hide stopped the date as soon as he realized it. And he felt terrible for not realizing it and stopping it sooner. His intentions were to cheer Kaneki up, not drag him out on an uncomfortable evening that he might not have even wanted in the first place.

“You don’t like me, do you?” Hide asked gently. It was one of the few things he could never accurately tell about Kaneki. Some days he thought Kaneki was harboring a secret crush on him. Other days he thought Kaneki only thought of him like a friend. He didn’t care either way. But he wanted to know right now, to make things simple and be able to best help Kaneki in whichever way he wanted and needed.

“...” Kaneki didn’t answer him.

“It’s fine. I know I’m not exactly a beautiful girl, like you usually like.” Hide said.

“I don’t know…” Kaneki said.

“You’re not gonna insult me or anything by saying no.”

“No, I… I really don’t know.” Kaneki said. He put his head in his hands, frustrated. “You’re right. You’re not a beautiful girl. I don’t see you the same way as I did with… with Rize-san. I don’t see you as beautiful, but…”

“But?”

“But you’re… handsome. You’re really nice and kind, and you goof around a lot, but you can be really smooth and charming when you want to be. And I do like that.”

Hide started blushing. Was he really like that?

“And… isn’t that romantic?” Kaneki mused. “Isn’t that what girls like in guys?”

“So you do like me.” Hide said, trying to make sense of it.

“I don’t know.” Kaneki repeated. “This date didn’t feel like it should. It didn’t feel good, to be treated as your date.”

“Did you feel like I was treating you too much like a girl?”

“No, no.” Kaneki shook his head. “Maybe it was just too much attention.”

“Too much too soon?”

“Just too much attention in general.”

“Then what kind of attention do you want? What did you and that girl do?”

“I already told you.”

“There’s gotta be more than that! Give me the juicy details! Did she have some real nerdy pickup lines? Did you do that thing where you cuddle and read the same book together? Or lean over her shoulder as she reads as an excuse to get closer to her?”

Kaneki gave him a confused look. Why would he want to get closer to her?

“No, none of that. We talked about our favorite books, ate dinner, and we talked as we walked home.”

“...That’s it?”

“Well, then there was the accident…”

Hide flinched. “Oh, I didn’t mean to—!”

“It’s okay.” Kaneki said. “I’m okay.”

“That’s really all you did on your date?”

“Is there something wrong with that?”

“No. As long as… that’s what you wanted to happen on your date?”

“Yeah. Yeah, it was… really nice… I was… really happy. Before…” Kaneki trailed off again.

“Just talking about books?”

“Yeah. Turns out we had a lot in common. I liked that.”

Hide went silent. He wasn’t sure how to say what he was thinking in a way that wouldn’t come across as offensive. Because he really didn’t mean it that way. But something didn’t seem to be adding up.

“You liked… that you had common taste in books?” Hide repeated.

“Yeah.”

“And… that’s it?” Hide asked again.

“Yes, that’s it.” Kaneki snapped, getting tired of answering the same question. And then he seemed to realize what Hide was getting at. “Oh.

There was a beat of silence. Then Kaneki asked “Well, then what do most people like about their dates?”

“I-I don’t know. I’ve never been on a date either, remember?”

“But if you were to guess?”

“Well, some people like to hookup on a first date. Or makeout. Otherwise, I think they try to learn all they can about each other and see if they might be compatible.”

“Okay? And wasn’t that what I was doing?”

“Was it?” Hide asked. “Did you ask about her family? Her schooling? Her hobbies besides reading?”

“No…” Kaneki said. “She asked about mine a little, but…”

“It’s not bad that you didn’t.” Hide said. “You had fun. That’s all that matters.”

After a moment, Kaneki said. “...I didn’t want to hook up with her.”

“That’s fine, plenty of people don’t want to move that fast, especially on a first date.”

“I didn’t want to kiss her, either.”

“And that’s fine too. First base is overrated. Not like I’ve ever kissed anyone, either.”

“She leaned in to kiss me. At least, I thought she was going to.”

“Oh?” Hide’s eyes lit up, suddenly interested. So they did have more physical stuff going on on that date. He knew they had to!

“But when she did… I felt… afraid.”

“It’s fine to be nervous.”

“Not nervous.” Kaneki said firmly. “Afraid.”

“Afraid of being a bad kisser?”

“Afraid of being kissed.” Kaneki admitted. “She was holding me, and coming in to kiss me, and I just felt afraid. I didn’t want her to kiss me. My heart was pounding in my ears and I couldn’t move and all I could think was, I don’t actually want this.”

“Did she back off?” Hide asked, holding his breath.

“Well… She didn’t kiss me…” Kaneki muttered.

“So you didn’t like her.” Hide said.

“I did like her.” Kaneki said. “She was pretty and I had a fun time with her.”

“So you liked her as a friend.”

“...As a friend?”

“Right? Sounds that way to me.”

Kaneki ducked his head and sighed.

“It’s fine. There’s other fish in the sea.”

“How can you tell?”

“Do you know how many girls there are in Tokyo alone, nevermind the whole wide—?”

“No. How can you tell if you like someone as a friend or as a girlfriend?”

“You, you know, feel different about them.” Hide said. But between Kaneki’s blank stare, and what he had just admitted, he realized that Kaneki did not in fact know.

“Uh, let’s see. You get anxious around them. But a good kind of anxious, not like anxiety but like excitement. You really want to spend more time around them. And they make you really happy. So much that sometimes you can overdo it while not realizing it. You know how in movies someone will laugh way too long at the bad joke their crush said? Like that.”

“But what’s the difference?” Kaneki asked. “You feel that way about friends too. Right?”

“Er, sorta? Sometimes?” Hide grit his teeth, starting to get confused himself. He knew the difference, but it wasn’t something he could put into words.

“But you can tell?” Kaneki asked.

“Yeah. I mean, I think so.”

“Then either… I like everyone… or I like no one...”

Hide laughed, patting him on the back. “Well good news, bud. There’s words for both of those.”

Tokyo Ghoul Headcanons

These are my own opinions drawn from interactions in the show and manga! Please be kind!

Hi hi!! For sillies I wanted to share my TG headcanons! I am a genderfluid aroace lesbian so I'm kind of biased towards the women bc I'm in love w them all tbh but I'll probably make more if I feel like it. For now have some main ones :)

Hide (he/him cis) - Bisexual! He's heavily bi coded in the manga and in the anime too! The way he interacts with Kaneki especially is very...

Saiko (she/they trans) - She's a character I project onto a lot. She doesn't seem to care much for romance or really socializing in general which is so real tbh. Her lack of caring I don't think translates to her platonic relationships later in the series (as we see) but I think her romantic interest is slim to none.

Urie (he/him cis (?) I can see him as trans tbh) - He is a bitter gay man. Prove me wrong. He's the black cat to Ginshi's golden retriever.

Ginshi - Bisexual! To me he seems unconcerned w labeling himself but still views everyone as attractive and isn't sure why.

Tooru (he/him trans) - MY FAVOURITE CANON TRANS MAN ILY 🙏🙏 He's gay imo but I am open to other interpretations as well.

Juuzou (he/they agender) - Demisexual but even then hasn't ever been romantically involved w anyone bc of his trauma.

Rize (she/her demigirl) - I have no clue why but she gives off a lesbian demigirl vibe idk?? I'm in love w her and want her to be a lesbian but besides that. I have nothing.

Ayato (he/him trans) - I think he's a trans man and aroace. I don't imagine him falling in love like. At all.

Touka (they/she nonbinary I just forgot the flag) - LESBIANISM ‼️‼️ Touka belongs on the island w me and the other lesbians. I view her and Kaneki's relationship as more platonic in the first series. In :re it's a Lot harder to ignore but I choose to ignore canon a lot anyways in favour of my happiness so idk. Plus she's in love w her human best friend so idk what to tell y'all besides the Touka is a lesbian truth.

Kaneki / Haise Sasaki (he/they demiboy) - I normally view these two as different people BUT I can honestly see Kaneki impacting Sasaki's identity and vice versa. Kaneki just whispering in his ear "you WILL be gay. You have no choice."

juniors. the duo basically everyone is weirded out by, but ultimately writes off as harmless. people usually go to them for fashion advice. (they’re both gnc/genderfluid, so they’ve got advice for everyone)

juniors, and the best neighbors ever. koma (my aroace king) is a ride or die for basically everyone, and renji is just along for the ride. he and uta have a silly little “not-quite-dating-but-more-than-friends” thing going that their friend group absolutely EATS UP

juniors. actively dating; their neighbors hate them. kaya works w/ renji and koma at the campus café

freshmen, and childhood friends that opted to go to school together. they never actively mean to get in trouble, but it almost always finds them anyway. kaneki is a literature major—same as renji

freshmen, also childhood friends. standard “punk-who-looks-for-fights” and “is-constantly-apologizing-for-her” dynamic

sophomores. the school’s top med student and top criminal justice major. constantly having beef w/ uta and renji for seemingly no reason

Also, I need to note a few things that are very important.

Arima Kishou along with Fushiguro Toji are not open to ships, Arima in himself is very difficult but also been wedded to @achroanimus for nearly three years. He falls into homosexual, aroace, when it comes to his sexuality. Although, I am more than happy to write ships that are platonic, familial, or enemies - oh, he has a lot of enemies. Denji and Kaneki are both trans, with Denji please use she/her pronouns along with Kaneki having masc, so, he / him. A full carrd will be a work in process in order to be imply about how each muse is written, it just takes a little time since the roster is pretty large at the moment.

touka's too aro for me to ship her romantically, but i like queerplatonic touriko and her being nishikimi's +1 or something (early :re touka, and of course still in a qplatonic sense)

as for our dear protag, it depends on the version lmao: kuroneki: shuuneki, qp kanerize (rize's too aro), tsukikanerize (listen.), matsuneki (yeah, shush.) - shironeki: shuuneki (in a huh. very specific way), qp amoneki (amon's too aroace) - haise: qp/soft-romo amonhaise - black reaper: furuneki (r-anarchy), etokane (? is that their name?) (also r-anarchy) and the three of them bc why the hell not (still r-anarchy) - king: please consider fuka

tldr my main kaneki ship is shuuneki (og exclusive - potentially up to haise)

This is a serious issue we need to talk about more. Aroace characters like Senku and Saiki K are constantly misrepresented. Like yeah Saiki says something similar to “she has a nice face shape that makes her look attractive” but he wasn’t saying he was attracted to her. Literally the whole series is him trying to get away from her also just because he wants to be like that one basic dude don’t mean he wants to be with the basic dude.

With Senku he has no romantic partner. Yeah it was hinted in the anime as a joke, multiple times but that’s the point. It was referenced as a JOKE for a reason.

Also both anime’s are comedy anime’s so the main character is more likely to not get a love interest or to not be in love so the series can keep going. In most anime’s once the main character falls in love and settles down then the anime ends. Like if Luffy got a wife after he finds the one piece, or when Kaneki got married, when Tanjiro and kanao settle down.

In comedy’s they typically like to leave it on a cliff hanger. They want the audience to feel incomplete so they will gain more off the series. Yeah Senku and Kohaku kissed but it was only a misdirection and they both were genuinely grossed out by it and they looked like they were about to throw up.

Dr Stone wouldn’t end with Senku settling down with someone. That’s just not how he is. Even after he saves the whole world he’s gonna keep doing things. Making new inventions and maybe leave all his work for a successor to do the same thing he did. It’s Senku, he’s not gonna do the deed when instead he could be helping the world get back on track.

And if we’re being fr rn there is NO WAY either of them would do that. Like I’ve pictured it and all I can picture is Senku about the throw up and Saiki passing out. Maybe it’s just self projection but I’m just being fr rn.

Now, I also have no knowledge of irl poly relationships, and also I'm aroace so I hardly understand romance and sex, period.

But for me when it comes to TG polyships, is that... we don't really get romantic jealousy as an emotion in the series?

Maybe it's my own dislike of heavy romantic jealousy, but I can't really point to any of the characters and say "Yes this person would be very possessive and jealous of anyone around their partner".

I think the only jealousy to crop up would be the insecure "I don't deserve them" type, which is very ripe for angst and said character being showered in love by the other two.

Additionally, because the series has so many trios and explores those dynamics... These characters already know and trust each other so strongly on a platonic level. The way most of my polyshipping comes about for these trios is that it just happens naturally as a part of that three-way friendship.

To me, there's 2 poly ships that are most likely in canon as-in:

1) Amon / Akira / Seidou.

We have Akira declaring she "loved both of them" to Gori after the Anteiku Raid. Amon coming to save Seidou from himself and save Akira in Rue. In the Clown Raid, Seidou saving Amon for Akira's sake.

They are always in alternating pairs, and all 3 know what they mean to each other.

Seidou: "Mado. Smile. Amon's coming home." - To me, that quote says it all. That's what I want them to be.

2) Touka / Kaneki / Hide

These three are my tg OTP so I'm biased, but I'm so interested in how, potentially, the third could fix the relationship issues with the other two.

Kaneki already has an unhealthy relationship with both Hide and Touka in canon — miscommunication and abandonment in slightly different ways.

I think Touka's bluntness would cause her to force Kaneki and Hide to talk things out. I think Hide would notice Kaneki avoiding Touka and nudge him to talk to her and ease him of any worries.

Or maybe they'd just make each other worse! Honestly, I'd love to see that too.

There was this talking about how there's bunch of Tokyo Ghoul trios, so it's easy to tie them up as ships.

I don't reeeeeeally do shipping, so I have no headcanons, sorry. What I can say though, is your ask got me thinking about polyamory ships in TG. I've never been interested in polyamorous relationships in real life so my knowledge on them is basically non-existent. I have read from people in them that they only really work if ALL partners have good mental wellbeing, self-esteem, and communication abilities, otherwise stuff like jealously and insecurity crop-up...( Which I guess is true of all relationships 🤷‍♀️) idk.

If this IS true, I wonder how successful polyamorous relationships would be for some of the trios in Tokyo ghoul?? There's a couple of popular ones I can think of, where straight off the bat I can think of dissension being very realistic, especially if the timeline is quite early-on.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question. If anyone has any experience or comments on this, I'd be really interested. Poly relationships seem popular in fandom, and I've always wondered how well they'd REALLY work.

One of my characters I'm considering making Caed-AroAce, but I couldn't find any caed- edits, and with the unique flag it was a little difficult to think of ideas

But eventually I got the idea to use the contrasting stripes to make a dual stack of books, since my character is an avid reader
