Tokyo Ghoul Headcanons

These are my own opinions drawn from interactions in the show and manga! Please be kind!

Hi hi!! For sillies I wanted to share my TG headcanons! I am a genderfluid aroace lesbian so I'm kind of biased towards the women bc I'm in love w them all tbh but I'll probably make more if I feel like it. For now have some main ones :)

Hide (he/him cis) - Bisexual! He's heavily bi coded in the manga and in the anime too! The way he interacts with Kaneki especially is very...

Saiko (she/they trans) - She's a character I project onto a lot. She doesn't seem to care much for romance or really socializing in general which is so real tbh. Her lack of caring I don't think translates to her platonic relationships later in the series (as we see) but I think her romantic interest is slim to none.

Urie (he/him cis (?) I can see him as trans tbh) - He is a bitter gay man. Prove me wrong. He's the black cat to Ginshi's golden retriever.

Ginshi - Bisexual! To me he seems unconcerned w labeling himself but still views everyone as attractive and isn't sure why.

Tooru (he/him trans) - MY FAVOURITE CANON TRANS MAN ILY 🙏🙏 He's gay imo but I am open to other interpretations as well.

Juuzou (he/they agender) - Demisexual but even then hasn't ever been romantically involved w anyone bc of his trauma.

Rize (she/her demigirl) - I have no clue why but she gives off a lesbian demigirl vibe idk?? I'm in love w her and want her to be a lesbian but besides that. I have nothing.

Ayato (he/him trans) - I think he's a trans man and aroace. I don't imagine him falling in love like. At all.

Touka (they/she nonbinary I just forgot the flag) - LESBIANISM ‼️‼️ Touka belongs on the island w me and the other lesbians. I view her and Kaneki's relationship as more platonic in the first series. In :re it's a Lot harder to ignore but I choose to ignore canon a lot anyways in favour of my happiness so idk. Plus she's in love w her human best friend so idk what to tell y'all besides the Touka is a lesbian truth.

Kaneki / Haise Sasaki (he/they demiboy) - I normally view these two as different people BUT I can honestly see Kaneki impacting Sasaki's identity and vice versa. Kaneki just whispering in his ear "you WILL be gay. You have no choice."

Tbh a big reason I love Touka is that they make her strong but she's still allowed to be feminine and it's never really a shameful thing for her to be unless it's a villain she's fighting saying that. Idk I just really love Touka and she's just a great character

Like I basically did the same thing beat for beat, I can not emphasize enough how much they did it first and how you should absoloutley look at their comic bc its really very good. I read it last night and just loved it so much that I wanted to take a shot at the same premise myself.

Hashirama is such a character and I love seeing darker takes for him bc that man is morally grey at best, let's be real

Also the first few pannels, including the "don't you dare touch a hair on his head" bit is literally word for word from the manga. Which is insane actually. Like, yeah ok no wonder Tobirama had to actually ask if he'd kill him bc Madara asked. Girl I would too.

Anyways then Touka got the line of some random misc Senju bc I love Touka and she deserves to see her favorite little cousin killed in cold blood and be the only one brave enough to hug his body while Hashirama is busy helping a shell-shocked and honestly horrified Madara to stand

Kyokos swimsuit is fine it just doesnt fit her personality, she's giving one piece. Homura's is an abomination.

I noticed the favorites I picked all had bows and frills! My least favorites were the least frilly ones too and thus boring in comparison, haha!

I actually ended up liking most of the swimsuits! Maaaybe Kyouko and Iroha's were my least favorite, but not enough to minus points.

Kyoko’s doesn’t fit her personality at all. Also, why are they all two pieces?! Most of them are in middle school!

Choosing number 5 was tough because really those first 4 were the only ones i didn't take issue with teenagers wearing. Mami's is almost ok, but the right section of the bottom piece… yeesh.

Kyoko's is the worst one to me thanks to the side ribbons. Unlike everyone else's, Kyoko's don't seem to be purely ornamental, but rather be the strings that are holding the piece up tied together, which worsens the fact that she's wearing a bottom piece with strings in the first place. This girl needs swimwear that doesn't threaten a wardrobe malfunction upon actually being used for swimming!

Honorary mention to Iroha, who only didn't get into the bottom three by virtue of Homura's outfit being bad in most of the same ways, but also looking stupidly impractical for bathing. What do you need the huge ribbon for, maneuvering the water currents? It seems to be long enough to reach at least her ankles, she's definitely going to trip on it at some point. My suspension of disbelief for magical girl outfits doesn't extend to swimwear, clearly.

Tsuruno wins by virtue of it being a cute design, and it being appropriate for a character her age to wear. I don't really get why Ui's couldn't have been a one-piece, but other than that it's alright. Madoka was originally going to win, but then i remembered the competition was actually about which design we like more, so despite being a bit less exposed than Tsuruno, she takes second place.

I Wonder What The Next Round is Or Maybe This one is the Last but I hope We have an Idol or Magia round or Image song round or something.

I hate Kyouko's swimsuit so much thank Madokami they gave her a better one eventually

The ribbons seem like they’d get in the way of swimming, especially Homura’s.

Interesting choice giving Sayaka a swimsuit that's not in her color palette. It was also certainly a choice to leave her super short shorts unbuttoned. ಠ_ಠ

Pleeeease magireco stop giving them bikinis, we get it you like midriff but they all wouldn't wear bikinis! You're supposed to make me believe that Sana would wear a bikini!? Miss wished to be invisible!!!? I picked Ui as my favourite because she's the one with the least amount of bikiniage, but even still its annoying a two piece, also someone who isn't here, why the hell does Touka also have a bikini, I hate it here

Juuzou x Ghoul reader

I don’t like madly in love tropes where the couple will throw away their beliefs for each other. However, Juuzou is unhinged, and I think someone who is like matches. Let me know if I should go a different route or enjoy this. Also, sorry for the long Y/n back story; I got carried away :)

Ok, I never intended to fall in love with Juuzou Suzuya. I’m ghoul well half, and he’s a 

CCG agent. Let me give you a quick back story. My name is Y/n Arima… well, it was. I’m a sibling of Kishou Armia, a product of the Sunlight garden. My whole purpose is to be a weapon; however, my brother had one condition in the garden wanted to use his DNA, and that was to give me a normal life well as much as they could give me; my parents are a doctor from the garden, and a school teacher who couldn’t conceive a child and I was their next best option. Kishou couldn't live with me since mother didn’t want to be reminded of what I was.

I swear she loves me, but it pains her to know my fate when I turn 18. My life was great. I went to school, had friends, my parents loved me, and I could see my big brother every weekend. Yeah, I had everything, an almost perfect life, until big madam caught a whiff of me that I looked like a doll and behaved like one. I was kidnapped right before my 6th birthday Kishou from what I remember, planned a party. He was always happy with me. My life as a scrapper was hell. I was tortured to the point I couldn’t feel pain, and parts of my hair turned white. It’s the same as Juuzou. He can’t feel pain, but his hair is white as snow thats because he would protect me by jumping on top to take in the hits from Big madam. She couldn’t manipulate me like she did Juuzou, or should I say Rei, thats what he was called at the time. I also went by another name, but it’s dead to me.

To make a long story short, there was a CCG bust in the scrapper ring Juuzou, and I tried to escape. We held each other's hands tight, but with all the commotion, we got separated. A DOVE did recognize me and wanted to take me by force, but Juuzou took it as a threat, and he became restrained. His last words to me that night were, “Run! Escape for the bolth of us. Don’t you dare come back from me! I’ll find you, I swear!” So I ran to Big Madam, thinking she would help me save him; however, she scoffed and grabbed me, but I fought back with only pure and utter rage Juuzou worshipped her, and yet she was willing to leave him. I unleashed my kagune for the first time and sliced her arm.

I was horrified and ended up on the run having DOVES and Ghouls on the hunt for me until I bumped into Yomo; I was starving and scared. From then on, I’ve called Anreiku home on the run from my brother, in a relationship with a DOVE, and trying to find a place as a half-breed, as Touka calls it. Kaneki stood up excited with a ton of questions. Yoshimura told me to be open with Kaneki since we were the only two who could understand one another. “Wait, wait, your brother is the White reaper? Why are you on the run? You can be leading a safe life.” He said with much confusion. I took a deep breath and spoke, “He is, but years have passed, and I have one more year before I turn 18. I will be killing my friends and my family. I would rather be in danger than hurt my family. He will one day find me and take me back. Until then, I’m free.” He tilted his head, thinking of any other questions. “Free? Wait! You're with a DOVE? How is that allowed?” I dreaded this question coming up.

I get enough crap from Touka. “I gave him an address three wards away. He found me one day walking to school, and Yoshimura knew no matter what, it was a lose-lose situation. I love him, and I’ll do anything for him. Call it Stockholm syndrome, but I’ll leave Anteiku if he calls for it. But if I leave Anteiku right now, then they're screwed.” I sighed, and Kaneki spoke, “How so? Your just a kid like Touka and I.” I smiled, and before I could talk, Touka spoke up. “She went crazy from the age of 6, and she was taught how to kill. She's a grade or two higher than me. Scrappers know how to kill humans and Ghouls. Before shit hits the fan, she is set in,” Touka said with her arms crossed. Touka and I are close, but it wasn’t always like that. The main thing we still fight about is my leaving one day and being with Juuzou. “Oh, is that why she and Yomo leave a lot together?” Kaneki asked. “Yup, I’ve been helping with disrupting territories. It’s boring when there was no action last time and no one argued. They took one look at me and yielded.” His jaw was on the ground before today. He thought I was a more excellent version of Touka, but he’s slowly seeing my scrapper side. “So, who here for me?” I asked Touka, “No one; I just popped in to listen to God.” She walked off, and I had to explain. “Now, where we differ, Kaneki, is I can eat human food and ghoul food. That is depending on what I do. If I use my kagune, I need to eat flesh, but if I don’t, then I’m normal, but during the whole month, I use my kagune. Before, when I was in denial, all I had was human food. Not once did I dare use my kagune, which made Touka jealous. It wasn’t until last year was when we became close.” He understood, and I could tell he wished that was him being able to have my drawbacks *ding ding* it was my watch. “Well, times up. If you need anything, let me know. I have a date to go to.” 

I waited by the train station for Juuzou. Lucky for me, he respects my wishes of not wanting to see my brother. DOVES are supposed to report me if I’m seen, and Shinohara hasn’t made the connection yet, but it’s coming. I wonder how Juuzou would react if I told him I’m a ghoul. He might kill me. It’s his job, and he’s more violent than me. Even if I’m ordered to kill him, I won’t. I would expect my fate and let him kill me. I could smell him. He’s close. His scent is so good that many ghouls would want to eat him. I felt his hands cover my eyes, and he spoke sweetly, "Guess who?” He laughed and laughed back as I turned around to embrace him. Even though I’m stronger, I feel utterly safe with him. “How was school?” He asked me as he patted my head.

“It was good. I’m stressed about exams, but I’ll pull through. How's work?” This is often double-edged. I’m genuinely curious about his day at work; however, to get Touka and Yomo off my case, I provided information that I’m told. That has been a lot of help. “Same old same old. Sometimes you lived with me and not in the 17th ward. It’s going into the red.” He sighed. “Just say the word, and I’ll run away with you.” I smiled up at him he smiled back. “Soon, I promise. I just want to get rid of all these guys that watch over me. Now, to the Zoo!” 

-Some headcanons-

-He knows that she's a ghoul. He’s not dumb. She passes off as human, but he knows.

-He found comfort in the Zoo, so he took Y/n to the zoo so she could feel safe.

-He's very clingy and wants to run away already; however, he knows the consequences, and he doesn’t want to risk being separated again. 

-I didn't know what dating was until Shinohara explained it to him, and he thought you two had been dating the whole time you were scrappers.

-His love language is physical touch. You must be touching via a hug, hand-holding, or even holding pinkies when you are together. 

-Does PDA unless you tell him to stop.

-He’s very overprotective 

-Hopes that one day Ghouls and humans can be together 

-Like to kiss your hand. He thinks it’s more intimate that way.

-He acts like a child, and you love it. It reminds you to let loose a little.

-Your more cold and hes childish but it’s a perfect balance.

AHH, Touka... Ok

I love Touka. In TG she clearly played the role of "slightly hostile, but has a heart" girly. But she did it well. It was free of cliché because she was only (undeservedly) hostile towards Kaneki. I love how she didn't hide how caring she was towards Hinami, Yoriko, and others, how she had aspirations for the future. Touka really was doing her best.

Then RE happened. I feel like I'm going to just parrot everyone else here, but she was ruined in RE. What happened to her?? I know some people mellow out as they grow older, but there's no way she lost her ENTIRE. PERSONALITY In two years or so ... She's the one 20something year old with the personality of a 90 year old barn owl. There's nothing to her at all.

Not that I endorse slapping people or anything, but I was honestly excited when she smacked Kaneki in RE. "Omg has Touka become Touka again 😯🤞?" But no...

I also think that as predictable as her and Kaneki hooking up was, there was ZERO chemistry between them. It was dislike - tolerance - like - marriage. Where and how did they actually fall in love?? Where was the flirting (or even just interest on Kaneki's part beyond "she's cute" or whatever he said). I think Touka had better chemistry with Nishiki.

Toukas' only purpose in Re was to provide Kaneki with his white picket fence ending. Out of all the characters across the entire series, she was screwed over the worst.

Even Naki, a SIDE CHARACTER, got a better outcome than her.

Seriously when I think of Touka, I only think of her in the first 14 books. It's like my brain is trying to erase her from re in order to protect me.

self-explanatory; try checking out Owl of You on ao3 if you want something that already exists

that said, this is not owl of you. this is a root a divergence fic. very different.

set during the 6 month timeskip of the original, after kaneki joins aogiri to kill the oek from the inside.

aogiri cleaning out the ghoul restaurants and securing power in each ward after the fact. digging into how they police the feeding habits of their members via a dove-only diet (or suicide victims; meat is meat, after all)

tatara being suspicious of kaneki's intentions within aogiri (he is definitely not jealous of the New Guy) (but also he's kinda right)

eto homeschooling hinami (it's cute ok)

kaneki reclaims his empathy, and eto learns from his kindness. a mutual healing process ("ipsen this is the second time you've talked about a canon divergence etoken mutual healing process fic" and i'll fucking doing a third time now shut up)

in which kaneki's dragon kagune completely disappears once he's cut out of it (so no dragon orphans), but at the cost of most of his loved ones (anteiku squad, touka, etc.)

also furuta gets eaten by him bc he should have done that and idk why he wasn't eaten at that point. need to really hammer in the sort of indiscriminate slaughterhouse monster the dragon kakuja was; a real "everyone loses" kind of moment

the V and clown stuff from canon take place while he’s being excavated. this is mainly so that eto gets free.

the fic takes place some time after the fighting settles down, and people are trying to piece their lives back together.

kaneki is a huge source of controversy, and to placate the public so they can all focus on rebuilding, he's placed in cochlea again, where he meets eto again, who has lost her memories.

boyfrens anon - oh no, i know. but you see, im from the jinkei server (ok this MIGHT give me away. whatever) and there has been a discussion already in there soooo you know. didn't mention it.

but yeah, not canon but very, very gay. extrememely gay. sickly gay. dabi making hawks uncomfortable is something i love to see and when done in fics i want to squeeze something - possibily the both of them.

if they become ""friends"" in canon, assuming they both live, i want touka to keep making keigo uncomfortable but in a non-threatening way and keigo getting that right back on him. they could be extremely hilarious if they want to.

yeah i basically would love to see the dynamic they have in the game or something close to it, alright

and it's funny to think before the dabihawks fanon dynamic was "hawks is annoying and dabi is done with him" when in canon dabi is the one going out of his way to use touch as a threat, keep calling hawks, and piss keigo off. and it's hawks avoiding dabi at the first opportunity and reaching out only when necessary.

Yeah, I really like...wish small things like this were put in fics. It's why I find so much wealth in canon, you know? Or even semi-canonical stuff, stuff I like using in fics. Dabi has always liked toying with Hawks so much, I really love seeing it in fics. Not that Keigo is, like, passive - he's got a petty side, obviously. I just think (love) that Touya is good at throwing him off his groove.

Genuinely want this for them in the epilogue. I'm sure Horikoshi's happy ending has some resolution of Hawks and the Todos and if Keigo learns to stop being....weird about them enough that Hori makes them interact, this is absolutely the dynamic I want.

7: I cannot possibly relate to her. She's too fucking badass.

9: So honestly I'm going to be disregarding the cinnamon roll/ problematic fave for some characters because... these are all adults from a period in history and in a gettin in general where performing morally dubious acts is the norm.
