i often think about the fact that Armand's soulmate is Daniel. Daniel, the freak. Daniel, just some guy. Imagine you go through almost 500 years of unimaginable horror (that had catastrophic effects and now you're powerful and stuff) and then you find your other half (through your now-ex) and it's literally just some guy. A shitty little kid from Modesto, even.

imagine the other vampires in the future though. "hmm, i wonder which very strong smart ancient vampire has landed the gremlin?" and "omg the gremlin turned someone?! who." AND IT'S DANIEL. It's this baby who's been on this earth a tiny fraction of Armand. he's the one who can go foot for foot with the vampire that is Armand?? Armand, in all his certifiably insane, clinically unhinged glory?? neat.

it's nice. the most unexpected thing from the most unexpected place. An unforeseen joy, if you will. and yeah, its this ordinary, freaky recovering drug addict out in the world just living his one human life, who can handle him. and be with him. and see right through him. who will do those all those things eventually.

and all the while everyone else is too much of a coward to love him.*

Lestat's perspective on the trial 

So much is different in the show and the motives for everyone involved in the trial are still SO unclear, I need more!

Lestat's version of what went down in Paris with Nicky and the start of the Theatre de Vampire (like I do think he and Armand fucked, but also way more stuff also happened for sure)

It would be really funny to get some Armand interjections in this portion of the tale

Lestat being haunted by Claudia's ghost in the present!! Also the Past!! He can never know peace!

THIS. but also, re:black and white readings of the loumand dynamic. While Armand doesn't have to conform to how some people think healing from csa and grooming works, and has complete autonomy over his actions and his body, and can obvs assume any role that he wants to sexually. but sometimes I'm like, maybe he's not trying to recover? At least not consciously, he's thinks everything that happened after the brothel was for his best. Him and marius were in love and everything was perfect until santino.

Like, yes him being submissive can just be his own preference and not something he's trying to reenact but doing something even though u want to (given that said something is a thing that you have a negative history with) without having dealt with absolutely any of it, (in Armand's case, without maybe even realising that there is something he needs to deal with in the first place?) can subconsciously reinforce certain ideas that you already have in your head. The continuous reinforcement (on top of his years with marius) can really only do more damage and set him in his ways. Just ask pavlov.

Im not an expert on how a character like Armand would go about healing, but I don't think abstaining from anything is the way obvs, but maybe being careful with indulgence is warranted. That being said, at the same time i should like him to whatever he wants to do now that he can.

I love everyone in this room rn RE: the topic of Loumands Dynamic and black&white readings. Also imo, another part of what's going on is a LOT of ppl, in and out of the fandom, are just plain weird about kink and the sexuality of abuse/rape survivors, how a victim "should" behave and what makes a Good VictimTM. So they see Armand and Louis' implied sex life and lose their minds because they refuse to even try & process a survivor doing kink as anything but Reenacting His Own Abuse or wtfever.

One of the reasons why i think Armand is not as popular as Lestat, is because I think Lestat's pain is often chaotically beautiful. It's like, relatable to large audiences, it's charming in a way, it's funny, it's fun to watch and it's hurts quite beautifully. It's explosive. (yes I did just see the season 3 teaser again.)

Whereas I don't know that Armand's pain translates the same way. When Armand is in pain, he's a child in a corner fiddling with bones and it's just sad. It's literally just sad. and it's a little pathetic and you just feel really sorry for the guy. It's not theatrical, it's actually kind of mundane and boring if you think about it. Just a vamp being crushed under the weight of his life. (a horrific life, at that)

Well, that's not very entertaining, is it? not that Lestat's pain is just entertaining, obviously not. Of course you feel for him. You feel for both of them. but maybe, just maybe when the pain comes with hahas or oh-my-gods, it hits different. (I'm only talking about the majority of the general audiences here. for those of here, with character focused bogs, every single scene hits! may god help us.)

Small mild-anxiety inducing part: In future seasons, if and when we see Armand's backstory and him being done justice, it will certainly garner a lot of sympathy, empathy and understanding. People will have a greater comprehension of him and his motivations, thoughts etc. But again, I don't know that, that is the same thing as being liked. (only talking about the show here, not the book-show fans. book fans are generally fond of him?) However, its a little upsetting to know that I give a fuck about the general audiences liking Armand as much as I do, but here we are.

Additionally, when Armand is in deep depressive episodes during his life, which I'm guessing would happen when there's no one there for him to control and/or love, he is just stripped of everything. Stripped of feeling and identity. (since its usually his counterparts' desires that give him identity.)

What I'm failing to convey here, is that Lestat's pain is additive while Armand's is additive inverse. (yes, i am talking about the seething day-to-day pain you have when dealing with difficult things. Not to say that, both of them don't have full blown breakdowns sometimes, of course they do). I feel like Lestat's pain might sometimes result in funny stories in the future. We had three deaths on the banger sisters. Like how our old embarrassing stories is current - good dinner times.

While Armand curls inwards, Lestat expands outwards. While Armand's pain takes and takes from him, Lestat's pain gives and gives Lestat.

History:

Daniel was born on February 15th, 1953 to Diana and Kenneth Molloy. His mother was a secretary at a school, and his father worked in construction. Both were highly religious, and what Daniel remembers most about his childhood is long boring church services. Church was about the only place they got along. His father was always distant, he almost never spoke, and his mother was perpetually unhappy. It was not a wholly unpleasant childhood, in fact it felt pretty normal in the late fifties and into the sixties.

When he was fifteen, he was caught kissing another boy from his school under the bleachers during a football game. His parents kicked him out. So did the school. He hitch hiked his way across the country to California to move in with his estranged aunt, who the family had disowned for a similar reason. She got him enrolled in a local school and Dan got his high school diploma, but he never quite fit in. He’d thought California would be different from rural Ohio, but somehow he never fit anywhere. Friends never quite stuck. He’d find out he’d been the butt of a joke far too late to stop it. He was withdrawn. Quiet like his father, and that terrified him.

He moved out at eighteen to pursue a career in journalism. He rented a shitty apartment in LA and did odd jobs to support himself until he got hired on by a paper.

When he was twenty-three he met a man named Louis de Pointe du Lac who claimed to be a vampire. He hadn’t thought about the supernatural since he was ten, but he needed a good story. And what a tale it was. One that shifted the axis of his entire world in a matter of hours. One that changed the entire course of his life. This wasn’t the supernatural of the painted god his mother had prayed to, it was real and tangible, and he was obsessed. He travels to New Orleans with what little money he has left in a desperate attempt to find Lestat. 

He finds Armand instead. Or rather, Armand finds him.

It’s terrifying. It’s thrilling. It’s intoxicating. It’s everything he’s ever wanted and it’s the monster under his bed all rolled into one. He runs for four long years of his life, tirelessly pursued by a monster with an angel’s face. Then one day the chase is done. Fear and frustration take on other shapes: love and addiction. He’d always been a heavy drinker, just like his mother, but this was something entirely different and wholly out of his control. But beyond it there is genuine love... and a deep exhaustion. 

The cohabitation is never easy. Not when they are slumming in the apartments of Armand’s victims or in the lavish halls of the night Island. He craves the attention, he longs for the blood, and yet he often feels crushed by it. He had never been especially close to anyone. His life had been spent lingering on the outskirts, and Armand couldn’t seem to get close enough to sate himself. It was strange, flattering, off-putting, intoxicating, and it was all heightened by each new wrinkle on his face and the looming threat of his own mortality.

When he can’t stand it anymore, he starts to run. No amount of drinking or smoking or sex or drugs can fill the gaping hole made by his leaving. Only Armand was big enough for that. 

He was on death’s door when Armand turned him, and the Queen of the Damned rose up and was defeated. He doesn’t know which one of them did the pulling away. Maybe Armand hated what he had become and shut him out of his heart. Maybe Daniel himself closed himself off. It happened too fast. One day he left, and he simply never went back, even when his breaking heart begged him to.

Left to his own devices he struggles with his own vampirism. He has no taste for killing. The world had already been too bright, too loud, too much for him to take most of the time as a mortal, but as a vampire it was so much worse. What should have been beauty was an endless torment. Until one day it was too much. He couldn’t stomach the real world. He became infatuated with creating his own worlds. Quiet, miniaturized cities that he loomed over and tended to like a loving god. Ideal places where things were as they should be---where he didn’t crave the life blood of everything he passed and where thoughts were close to him. As much as he could he lived in those worlds.

He’d been living under Marius’ roof for three months before he even properly realized it. His tolerance for the ancient vampire waned quickly, but he likely would have wasted away to nothingness or walked into the sunlight without him. They existed, for the most part, in silence. Marius would remind him to eat, Daniel would occasionally, in a fit of excitement and glee, usher Marius into the room to show him a new addition to his tiny towns, and then they’d return to pretending one another didn’t exist. Or, at least, that’s what Daniel did.

He stayed for two years, gradually coming to terms with his new life and learning to cope with its challenges. He mastered his more desperate, violent impulses and in doing so relieved himself of the guilt of killing. 

Now Daniel is a wanderer. He’s very interested in the other beings out there---things that aren’t vampires. He reads and researches and travels at his leisure. 

For the most part, for the first time in his life, he is content, and yet he is deeply lonely.

Canon Divergencies: Daniel never has a romantic relationship with Marius, Daniel has an actual backstory, Daniel is autistic, blood sharing is not the vampire version of sex (see this post for more information on how I feel about that and why), I generally play him after the events of the books and I’m not extremely familiar with any of the novels past TVA. I have a vague idea of what happens, however, and I’m willing to discuss plot points within them or engage with later characters.
