Differentiating between “bad” picky eaters and people with ARFID is just… incredibly dumb. Mind your own business, your “but it’s okay if you have a disability/sensory issues!!1!” means jack shit when you’re acting like food issues are a moral failing. Stop hating on “picky eaters” or stop pretending to care about disabled people.

Tumblr media
schlatt & reader. fluff.
Tumblr media
“this is stupid,” schlatt grumbled, staring down at the plate between you both.
you let out a shaky laugh, your fingers fidgeting against your sleeve. “yeah.”
the two of you sat at the dining table, a single dish in front of you—something neither of you had ever tried before. trying new food was hard, but it was supposed to be easier with someone else, right?
except now you were both just staring at it, neither of you making a move.
schlatt sighed, leaning back in his chair. “look, we can just forget it. we don’t have to try new shit.”
you chewed the inside of your cheek. “i know.”
he looked at you for a second, scanning your face. you could tell he meant it—he never pressured you. never told you to just eat it or made you feel bad about how anxious you got. he got it. maybe not to the same extent, but he understood.
still, you hated how this made you feel. the tightness in your chest, the nausea curling in your stomach before you’d even taken a bite. it was just food. it shouldn’t be this hard.
you swallowed. “i… i think i wanna try it.”
his brows lifted slightly, but he nodded. “okay.”
you hesitated before cutting a tiny piece, your hands trembling. it felt like your body was rejecting it before it even touched your tongue. your breathing was unsteady, your heartbeat loud in your ears.
you felt schlatt’s hand rest over yours—warm, solid. “hey. you good?”
you nodded quickly. “yeah. yeah, just… gimme a second.”
he didn’t rush you. just gave your hand a small squeeze, his own fork still untouched beside him.
you took a breath, closed your eyes, and finally, finally took a bite.
…nope.
your whole body tensed as the taste hit you, and you barely swallowed before pushing the plate away, shaking your head. nausea swelled in your stomach, and you covered your mouth, trying not to gag.
schlatt grabbed a napkin, setting it in front of you in case you needed it. “bad?”
you nodded frantically, squeezing your eyes shut. “i—i can’t.”
“alright.” he didn’t sound annoyed, didn’t make any snide comments. he just took the plate and pulled it away from you, like it wasn’t a big deal. “forget it. we’ll get something else.”
you exhaled shakily, leaning against him as the nausea slowly faded. “sorry.”
he scoffed, wrapping an arm around you. “shut the fuck up.”
you let out a weak chuckle, and after a second, he reached for his fork.
“guess i’ll give it a shot,” he muttered, taking a bite—and immediately grimacing.
you watched as he chewed slowly, looking downright miserable.
“well?” you asked, voice still small.
he swallowed hard and made a face. “fucking disgusting.”
you blinked—then let out a laugh, leaning into him as the weight on your chest finally lifted.
he pressed a kiss to your temple, grumbling against your skin. “we’re getting burgers. shit was gross.”

Bro I HATE having sensory issues related to food that make no sense. Like what do you MEAN I can’t eat fried eggs unless they’re in a sandwich?? What do you MEAN I can only eat a few bites of pudding before my mouth suddenly decides it hates the texture of pudding??? What do you MEAN the texture of meat makes me gag, but if I try to eat a vegetarian meat replacement like Beyond Meat it has the exact same effect on me??? UNREAL

Calling all autistics and ARFIDs of tumblr!!
I've seen multiple memes and even made jokes myself about how potatoes are the always reliable safe food for autistics, especially those with ARFID or other eating troubles.
This post is inclusive of self-diagnosed autistics and ARFID

When food is the central love language that binds people together, what place is there for those of us who don’t want to be fed? If “eating is[…]the exclusive privilege of the living,” does that make me simply the walking dead? You can’t be a picky eater in the dungeon. Okay, but – hear me out – what if you are?
WOULD YOU, COULD YOU, EAT A DRAGON? an essay about picky eating, ARFID, and Dungeon Meshi is now up on neverseemenaked.com, and I’d love it if people took a look, even if it’s to yell at me about completely missing the point.
(You can also find my cartoons about asexuality, anxiety, and other a-words!)

My ARFID gives me a very hard time eating, but even if my brain is being very particular there's usually something I can eat. Whether anything that's actually available is that something is a different matter entirely, but very rarely does my brain go "NO! NO FOOD IN MOUTH! NOTHING IN MOUTH! ALL FOOD BAD!"
But when it does happen. It is. Very. Frustrating! To say the least.
Like right now.

I was watching a video yesterday, and in it was a clip where a guy was like, "The other day, I made a video making fun of picky eaters, and I got a bunch of comments going "But I'm Autistic". Well, obviously you're exempt, I wasn't talking about you."
Okay, so, who were you talking about? Who isn't exempt? What is your criteria for an acceptable and an unacceptable picky eater, and why? How do you know that the person you are making fun of isn't Autistic? Or doesn't have some other medical condition that causes food restrictions?
The short answer is that you don't. You don't know. You have absolutely no way of knowing. That person you deemed acceptable to make fun of for being a picky eater because they refuse to eat vegetables is very likely Autistic.
"Well, if they’re being entitled-" So it's actually entitled people you don't like, and not picky eaters? Also, I have seen so many picky eaters get called entitled despite not acting as such, simply for being picky in the first place, so I don't even really trust this assessment.
Literally, the amount of times I've seen people accusing picky eaters of being entitled for bring their own food to like a dinner or something is too many to count. Like, they literally accommodated themselves! What more do you want?!
Most people that are extreme picky eaters, are not picky by choice. And I'd say that most of those people are picky due to medical conditions like ARFID or other sensory issues. There is no "acceptable" picky eater to make fun of. Ever.
Unless you are the one directly caring for, and feeding said picky eater, it literally does not affect you. Leave picky eaters alone.

If we can have shows about the lives of adults with dwarfism, autism, compulsive hoarding, etc.
Then why can't we have shows about people with debilitating mental health disorders?
Don't get me wrong - those three are absolutely a start. But it's not nearly enough.
I, for one, would pay to be on a show about people with AVPD, social anxiety, dyspraxia, misophonia, or what have you, if it meant that people would become more understanding towards the daily struggles of...us.
Eating disorders are another thing that should get their own shows, particularly ARFID.
Ableism in general has become so normalized that there's simply no wait for us to get help. I would go so far as to say that ableism is the most severe and destructive form of discrimination there is. Nothing is worse than being firmly against people who could very well be unable to live a normal life without accommodations. Awareness of this shit needs to be spread, or maybe even shoved down people's throats.
It's time for us to rise up and tell people that we are FED UP of how the world as a whole treats us as though we're sub-human.

ARFID is actually so terrible bc it’s like I know my body is so hungry I’m just not I don’t want to put anything in my mouth. The idea, the action of eating is so unbearable. But I’m so hungry. Like I need to eat. Every day. Every day it’s like what we gonna eat. Every day u have to eat. I don’t even like, have any insecurities ab myself or anything. I just hate eating. I would rather not be eating so I DONT . but i’m so hungry. and when I try to eat anything it’s like this isn’t even edible. I can’t have the food that i literally spent money on to have delivered to my house. no. I need this ultra specific other thing that wouldn’t even fucking give me any nutrients like popcorn. and if anyone tries to feed me anything it’s like oh sorry I can’t eat that. Sorry I can’t eat sauce, or tomatoes or pickles or strawberries or ANY BERRY or things that are too mushy 🤩🤩🤩. No you don’t understand 🧍i would literally rather starve to death ( 😉 almost have a few times ) or be shot in the chest. like no i’d literally rather eat your shirt off your back than eat the standard burger. cheese and lettuce for me thanks. nothing else no thanks. no spicy food no fruits aha ✨😍 just plain food for me ☺️ and yes I do like it that way when I can actually eat food 😚
my boyfriend bought me a beautiful delicious platter of food home from my FAVOURITE 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😜🤪🤪🤪 restaurant last night and 👀👀👀 it looks soooo good :)) but every time I try to eat it ! 🚨 uh oh!!!!! I’m soooo full and uncomfortable to the point where i might throw up 🤣 i’m going a little insane 🥳
